Slam Diego Padres and Standings at 30 games (Episode 12)

[Music] hey there this is real talk baseball carlos baseball with me is willpower and we have a lot of things to talk about today we have the standings and we have the padres hitting four grand slams in four days against the rangers what is that about will man can you believe that who would have ever thought that the padres would be making history this year man i mean you could tell that they had a pretty good team with the signings of hosmer machado uh tatis you know coming up out of nowhere when they uh traded in for james shields but man you think about like record-breaking um numbers you think about teams like the yankees you think about teams like the dodgers and in the past 50 years no one expected the padres to do anything worthy and then now they're finally giving us something to be excited about you know and honestly as as a national league west fan i really enjoy this it's it's finally some competition for the better teams in national league west the giants were on the top for for a little bit uh dodgers were you have been on the top for the last seven years uh diamondbacks had you know a pretty good run rockies were you know had a pretty good run and then now we're finally getting the padres like into the mix man it's exciting for baseball and it's crazy because we've been talking about the padres almost in our podcast and that's something that we don't do a lot and that's good though i do like the padres they have a good dynamic right now they have a good team i think you know they are a team to look at in the playoffs because they do as we're looking at the playoff standings and are we looking at the positions they are in second place in the west coast which is a good thing but let me go ahead and mention the names of grand slam so it started out with the 3.0 remember uh tatis he hit it out on august 17th and then will myers hit it out on the august 18th and then manny machado hit it out on august 19th and then eric hosmer and these are all the guys that you just mentioned that they went out and signed and then of course the tease is the only one that was uh brought up from the farm system which is really good but man these guys yeah kind of yeah because they traded for him but still um august 20th every costumer and man these guys like went out and did their thing and now they're getting the rangers break man it's like we've been waiting for machado to finally show up you know and his average is is still something to be desired uh he's still sitting in like the low 200s but um honestly dude like his uh his presence in the clubhouse you know he's been around mlb for so long he really had that reputation in baltimore he didn't really show when he uh got traded to the dodgers in 2018 but now he really seems like he's getting more comfortable on the west coast uh he's getting more comfortable with his team the padres and you know they they signed him to this long deal so i mean if this is really the the beginning of what he's actually going to be able to accomplish next you know a few seasons the padres are definitely a team to look out for and they also have eric hosmer that's starting to get a little bit hot too he was struggling the first couple years that he got signed also but uh i mean i think i think eric hosmer got the eight-year deal you know and um and now tati's coming up and and just hitting home runs left and right he's still the leader in home runs in the league this is definitely like you said like the team to look out for yeah and we're talking about him too much i think which is good you know what it's good because we're usually just talking about guys like mike trout or you know kershaw or you know the these these great players that everyone already knows about but finally we got this this new guy it's kind of like a cunha was last year yeah you know cunha kind of came out of nowhere and just hitting bombs left and right and stealing bases all over the place you know and now now we have we we got that gun on the east coast and now we got one guy on the west coast that's just tearing it up that's just tearing it up and he's still rookie man it's the second year you know 21 years old man he's 29 years old yeah and and it's in the he's in the west coast we're going to be watching him a lot which is a good thing i mean you're in the east coast so you probably won't see him as much as i i will but soto over here nothing against those guys but uh honestly if if i had to choose one of those guys to be on my team i would use tatis yeah it's really hard to find a shortstop that has that type of power you know that skill set man yeah yeah he has a skill set he he is fast he has a glove he has a bat it's just like he made that amazing play the other day i don't know if he saw it he ran from shortstop all the way to out to left field and made a you know a running grab that was an amazing play yeah i think it was dope i think it's dope but hey the parties aren't staring for they're not in first place uh the west coast teams which is the national league west there's four teams out of the five making the playoffs if the season ended today so we got the dodgers in first we got the second place um who do you got second place we got second place uh the cubs uh and we're going off of records right so because we're gonna they're gonna go into brackets and they're gonna play kind of like in basketball so we got the dodgers first we got the cub second we got uh who's third place the braves are third place fourth place you got the padres which is west coast and then in fifth place you have the cardinals and then the sixth place you have where's it at you have the marlins and in the two wild cards you have another two west coast teams you have the rockies and then you have the giants the giants are actually making it like they're under 500 but they're close to being 500 even though um they're in the west where they're still they still have a chance to even make that because i mean those two positions seven and eight are going to be alternating between a lot of teams but right now as the 30 30 game mark hit which is half the season the giants are in and that's pretty crazy man we weren't we were talking about it in our earlier podcast that the giants don't even have anything but look at they're in the playoffs they're in the mix right now and honestly you never know what the giants are capable of because they won the world series after being the wild card team a few years back yeah so that just goes to show you that anything can happen in uh baseball playoffs you know yeah yeah and and that's a good thing now we go into the american league we have the a's which are in first place and then you have the twins which is kind of the same record but uh you're looking at winning percentage so i think they they have the a's then the twins then third place you have the yankees which is pretty pretty amazing they they're still in the in the mix because they have a lot of injuries and but uh darren judge is coming back right aaron judge is back today yeah okay so yeah so i mean slowly they're going to get their players back and then in fourth place you have the raise which is they have a really good pitching staff out there i don't think they're going to stay in fourth and then you have fifth place you have the indians you have the sixth place you have the astros which that could change but they've been playing they've been playing um they've been playing all right ball they just got swept by the padres though yeah so you know they've already gotten swept like four times this season this season so yeah uh some teams in the west are not that good and we're talking about american league because national league they're all pretty on point the american league teams on the west coast are not that they're not that great you have the mariners you have the the rangers that are not you know they're not showing up as well yeah and then you have uh the seventh place which is a second wild card right um the first wild card sorry it's the white sox and then eighth place you have the blue jays so all those teams there they're above 500 um so yeah we'll have we'll have a good uh playoff run right there in the american league so i mean those are your standings right now as the bracket falls in 30 games because we it is a 60 game season so right now is the midway point so any surprises for you that you think that that oh man there's a lot of there shouldn't be there yeah i'm i mean i i mean i look at look i'm looking at that how are the marlins in second place in the national league east who would have ever thought that that would happen you know yeah i mean jeter must be doing something right you know he has all these young guys there man yeah all these young players that are hungry to play and they're they're just so happy that they have the opportunity to play because you know if they still had the same team that they had a few years ago if they never made all those trades you would still have yelled she would still have osuna you would still have g gordon um yeah you had a squad and giancarlo stanley and stanton yeah so you had all these superstars in that one team and you still didn't do nothing with it you just got rid of everybody and you got a new players and this is what you're getting you're getting the second place and you're going into the playoffs in the 60 60 game season so it could work it could work for him never know um but it is possible it could change we still got 30 games left yeah you still got 30 games left so yeah i could change but as of right now is surprising right and the one that surprises me is the white sox like i think the white sox i mean should be a little bit better than what they're showing i think you got the indians before they before the white sox so i don't know they have looks like they have the same record right now okay okay so they can probably alternate because i know the twins are they got a good they got a good squad yeah they have really good pitching you know with the with the uh kenta miata trade um getting rich hill yeah signing rich hill to a short deal like you know rich hill he has that injury history but when he's healthy he is an amazing pitcher he really is he has the best curve ball in all of baseball in my opinion yeah i agree i like his curveball and i think that's the curveball we saw with daughters like we were just seeing like he actually has two curveballs that a lot of people don't know about he has one where he kind of comes a little bit more over the top and then he has one where he throws kind of like a slider so it's more of a slur so he really kind of do that like uh like 12 to 6 style that kind of kershaw has but then he also has that like um like three to nine style where it just kind of like swoops around like a like a sidearm type thing right yeah exactly and it's almost unhittable man it's it's really hard to to see those type of pitches coming out of that guy's lanky arm yeah it's going to be interesting at the end of the season man we're going to see a lot of a lot of teams fighting and going to the end because we do see a lot of records that are the same and we're not this status might not even stay the same for sure because there's a lot of there's a lot of games left there's 30 games and there's still the trading deadline you know the trading deadline hasn't happened yet it hasn't we've seen some trades but not really big ones and there's there is big ones and we'll talk about them in our next video for sure um so anything else to add will um i mean just looking at the standings i i can i can tell you that there's a lot of teams that i see in the tournament style of playoffs that we're going to have that we can pretty much count out you know there's uh there's some teams that you know are definitely going to make the uh the playoffs for sure and then some teams that are kind of creeping up out of out of um out of nowhere you know there's there's the top 16 teams that are making the playoffs and then the bottom 14 that are out but yeah there's like that threshold right now where the records are so close that you you really don't know who is going to be in the playoffs i i can kind of guarantee there's like four teams for sure that are going to be in the playoffs but everyone else it could really go either way you know especially because of the trade deadline there are certain teams that they're not playing so good right now because of just that that one piece that's missing but if they get that one piece before monday around four o'clock eastern that's really gonna make or break a team right there yeah watch out for those trades and like
