Penn State needs more 'explosive plays' in 2024 | Big Ten Talk | NBC Sports

we know that Michigan's top 10 but Penn State's in the top 10 as well preseason poll and they should still be a threat in the Big 10 again they should be you know there's there's question marks there and it'll be interesting to see because they brought in a new coordinator on both sides of the ball right so Andy coton Nikki did a great job at Kansas outstanding job uh can he do the same kind of thing with Drew Aller and the Penn State offense uh they've got the running backs I think their offensive line is pretty good the big question mark for them continues to be the wide receiver position I don't know what they have uh or what might emerge uh as big-time playmakers that can stretch the field the problem for Penn State last year offensively uh they were efficient they just weren't explosive you know so Drew Aller threw 25 touchdowns and only two interceptions but he only averaged six something yards per you know per pass they didn't have the ability to make explosive plays down the field now whether that was play calling whether it was a quarterback a little hesitant whether it was a lack of speed or threats on the wide receivers I think it was a combination of all those things but you can't beat good teams you can't beat a Michigan and Ohio State an Old Miss uh a Wisconsin you can't beat those teams if you don't have explosive plays in your pass game so that's that is job number one for Penn State offense is to create more explosive plays in the pass game you know they're going to be good on defense Tom Allen takes over was a head coach Indiana has a really good track record as a defensive coach comes in and takes the place of Manny Diaz uh they've got talent they've got some of the best players in the league you know Abdul Carter will be as good as anybody in the Big 10 now that he's going to be rushing the passer almost exclusively from The Edge um but the biggest question is explosive plays on offense and then in those games that really matter where it's a toss up where the talent is even you know how do they play in those games they have not been able to get over the in those games and that will determine you know how far they go now you know maybe they don't have to win all their games maybe they can lose one maybe they could even lose two and still find their way into the expanded 12 team playoff uh but they still have to at some point find a way to win those kind of games that are that are toss-ups we shall see it is a big question mark over there for James Franklin and company and they will have their hands full but with another loaded roster as expected we'll see if derler can take that step forward and take more of those downfield shots
