it's hard to imagine the alien Universe without sigor Weaver as Ripley but there were some pretty big names in the running after Ridley Scott decided that the Ripley character would be a woman Veronica cartright auditioned but she was ultimately cast as Lambert the ship's Navigator Helen mirin was considered but she lacked the physique Ridley Scott was looking for Merill Streep was discussed but due to the recent death of her husband John Cazale and the strong audition by sigor Weaver she did not pursue or get the role and it is confirmed that Jane Fonda was considered though she was seen as too established and would have made a dent in the already tight production budget
