Lucy is Magic Lucy is alive Lucy is the cutest elephant in the world Lucy belongs to me and she belongs to all of [Music] you my connection with Lucy is pretty much my entire life I was born and raised in Margate so Lucy's always been a part of my life because she's here and I was here my my first recollection of Lucy is five years old started selling candy to save her from the wrecking ball in seventh grade so I would have been 12 and 13 and I'm 67 today so I've been here for more than a half a [Music] century in order to do this job well you have to be passionate about what you do if the trash needs to be taken out I'll take the trash out if there's a a loose board on Lucy I'll get up with the hammer and nail and fix it if a light bulb's burned out I'll go change that and I do it with my staff it's not me alone I have a great staff and collectively we make up the save Lucy [Music] committee I've probably walked in this elephant thousands and thousands of times sometimes when I come up I like to sing because the Acoustics are they sound good Fly Me to the Moon and let me play Among the Stars people ask me why I'm I'm so passionate about Lucy all the time and and the reason is that she's more than a building there is there is an actual Spirit that's alive inside of that building and it's undefinable but it's real and anybody who is here who who works for her who volunteers for her they feel it she she's more than just metal and wood and Nails she there's a spirit to her that is absolutely alive nobody would do this for the money they do it because they truly love Lucy what she means what she stands for her history what she means to kids and you have to be a caregiver there there's so many facets to running this thing when you're when you're 143 years old you're made of wood and metal and you're 100 yards from the ocean takes a lot of care I'm dead serious about my job absolutely um there's a lot of work involved a lot of Blood Sweat and Tears go into running this thing we pretty much raise our own money to maintain her so it's a lot of t-shirts a lot of Tours a lot of coffee mugs to maintain the structure but she's worth saving you know so many things in America are they're quick to tear down Lucy is a testament to man's Ingenuity to man's imagination and and the fact that she's here at 143 and she's not going anywhere there's a love between both of us I know she loves me and I certainly love her I am so blessed to be able to say I have never come to work a single day in my life because what I do I truly love I'd rather be here than any place else Lucy is forever I plan to be here as the Director at least until I'm 72 and then I probably will step down as the Director and assume a non-paid position on the board I'll stay involved with Lucy as long as I breathe
