we got some massive news coming out here the Las Vegas Raiders have officially released defensive tackle Byron young plus they also added a couple of players to their practice squad and they went out and actually claimed two guys so we're going to talk about those guys we watch a little bit of tape on some of these guys a little bit later on as well let's talk about this man so Byron young the Raiders defensive tackle from just last year he was a third round pick I believe he was a 70th overall pick uh that's a very very highly drafted player and the Raiders ended up releasing him before he can even get into his second season right initially when Byron young was brought to the Raiders we thought this was a bad pick and we did have hope for him and in his first season he was a healthy scratch a lot coming into this second season we had to heard all these reports you know Antonio Pierce talked about Byron young he looks better he looks more comfortable some of the beat reporters were like oh this guy's going to potentially be the starting nose tackle and uh preseason week one came around we watched his tape and he was terrible right he was the same Byron young we had seen last year he had improved a little bit with the hand to hand passor technique but he was still bad just all around right all around byon young really didn't show us much obviously he looked better from last year coming into this year but uh was he worth the third overall pick or say a third round pick absolutely not right we're at the point now where Byron young at this point you can say is a bust now that doesn't mean he can't still have success right plus I think there's a chance Raiders actually bring Byron young back to the roster the fact that the Raiders waited until until the second day to release him tells me that they actually want this guy back and I think strategically Tom cesco did this in a way where he at least was able to kind of think this through you know when you release guys on the very first day every single general manager director player Personnel every person within those departments they're scattering social media right Tom tusco talked about this yesterday they're scattering social media to see what names of guys are being released which guys they could ultimately claim and bring to their squad and keep in mind it's already hard to be a to bring guys in because you have 90 guys on your roster you have to get down to 53 and then to go and say well we want to have two three four five guys from other people well then that means you're not going to get 53 guys on your roster you're picking like 46 47 right because you're trying to claim all these other guys so generally speaking you're not putting claimers in for other guys right generally speaking unless you're a first-time general manager then you might but if you're going into like year two three year four you're not claiming a bunch of guys from other teams doesn't make sense now if if you do claim guys it's usually on the first day right usually you'll make one or two roster spots and you'll claim a couple guys and then the Strategic way to release guys that you actually want on your practice squad is to wait one extra day because at that point most teams don't have that roster space right because they've already put claims in for guys when you put a claim in for a guy you might actually have to pay them depending on if they're drafted depending on uh you know where you you ultimately ended up putting the claim in if they're a udfa might not matter but if they're drafted now you might be stuck with that salary so uh there's rules and stuffff so the fact that the Raiders released Byron Young on day two uh they initially said he was on the 53 man roster yesterday to me tells me they're going to put him on the practice CR so I'd actually be surprised if he isn't back with the Raiders but regardless the fact that the Raiders still take a third round pick they release him in the you know in the hopes to bring him back still tells me that if he is claimed by another team the Raiders don't care all that much because there's just not enough upside with Pon Young which is crazy to think because Nessa Jade Silvera is on the 53 man roster at this point so that tells me the Raiders feel much higher about Silvera than they do about Byron young uh they released Matthew Butler yesterday as well uh but bar Matthew Butler is actually back with the team so we have an update on some of the guys that are back with the Las Vegas Raiders Vince monor put it out there that Christian Wilkerson Jaylen gon Dalton Wagner Matthew Butler Carter Bradley Ben Brown Charles Snowden will putam are among the players that are back to the Raiders practice squad right so the Raiders have practice right now these guys are obviously in the building and they see some of these guys there so to me it looks like the Raiders have brought in a couple of these guys and they've officially signed into the practice squ now we've already talked about some of these guys right we knew Carter Bradley was coming back to the Raiders right that was there was no question about that uh we knew that Dalton Wagner and Matthew Butler are most likely going to come back will Punam has shown some upside right he went and got into a fist fight with Max Crosby which most rookies don't do he's back with the Raiders he's back at the you know essentially at the practice squad as well Christian Wilkerson Jaylen G kind of surprised with Wilkerson that he's back but it's really not a big deal it's just practice squad at this point so here are some of the guys that are backing we'll probably add a couple more players from the Raiders roster I would assume Byron young going to be one of those guys but he has to go through the waiver process right so Byron young can't actually come and practice today the same way none of these guys practiced yesterday with the Raiders so Byron young won't be able to practice today he'll have to go through the waiver process if no other team claims Baron young which I'm going to make the Assumption no other team will because I think the fact that he was a third round pick the cap implications for the next three years you're essentially tied to him if you claim him um plus just making that extra roster spot I think it's hard to do so I do expect my young back with the Raiders but the Raiders also did claim two other guys so uh the Raiders went and claimed defensive tackle Jonah Lalu from the Indianapolis Colts he was a you uh actually I think he was a seventh round pick of the Indianapolis Colt so uh Jonah leelu is actually now you know essentially having to be with the Raiders right we can cut him it's not a big deal but we will incur a little bit of dead cap if we cut him we'll be responsible for his contract and then you got Thomas Harper who I think is in his second year he was with the charger so that's obviously someone Tom Tesco feels comfortable with uh he's now coming to the Las Vegas Raiders as well so there you guys have it the Raiders have went out and they've claimed two guys from other rosters at the same time none of the Raiders players were actually claimed by other teams which again is not surprising most teams are not claiming players it's just not something you're doing it's already hard enough getting from 90 down to 53 and then to have to go claim other people and now you have to get even further in your Cuts doesn't make sense to me um but the Raiders did bring those two guys in they brought some of their own practice squad guys in Matthew Butler dalon Wagner those are the two guys that I think have the most upside so I'm glad the Raiders brought them back and of course they've released Byron young but I do expect Byron young to also be back with the Las Vegas Raiders um and I do want to just talk a little bit more about byon Young and then we're going to watch tape of the two guys that we claim uh but let's talk about Byron young you know um one of the things with Byron young is when the Raiders first drafted him I was disappointed with the Raiders drafting B Young I had you know I specifically remember putting a tweet out there on social media saying uh Dave Zigler does not know how to draft defensive tackles he does not know what he's looking at the guy is clearly not comfortable with defensive lineman and that's kind of been true if you guys think about it you know the Raiders drafted Neil phell I think in the fourth round we took Matthew Butler in the fifth round we took Nessa Jade Silvera in the seventh round Byron young in the third round Tyreek Wilson in the first round pretty much all of those guys suck right and uh what's interesting is Matthew Butler and Nessa Jade Silvera are still with the Raiders Byron young might be back but you know essentially none of those guys really panned out and I know people are going to say well you know third fourth fifth round pick third fourth fifth one pick is what makes a team a Super Bowl competing team right because when you draft a guy like Max Crosby in the fourth round or when you draft a linebacker um you know like Logan from the Cincinnati Bengals I forget his first name um I think it's Logan Wilson or it might be Wilson Logan when you get a linebacker in the third fourth fifth round that's a top 10 linebacker when you get Fred Warner right I think Fred Warner was a third round pick when you get these guys that actually have success that actually play you know that's how you win Super Bowls you know of course coaching your quarterback that stuff matters but you got to have good depth and you got to draft well the Kansas City Chiefs are continuously replacing their cornerbacks year in year out and uh it comes down to drafting at the end of the day and the Raiders have not had any success drafting defensive tackles or defensive ends and uh I think Dave zegler was obviously one of those guys that just did not know what he was doing with that position specifically and uh we talked about Byron Young when the Raiders brought him in right byon young was he was a bad pick at the end of the day he was not on anyone's radar uh you looked at the top 10 or 15 defensive tackles coming out in that draft last year Byron young was nowhere on anybody's ranking across the board he wasn't on the Mel kypers boards the Jordan Reed boards the Matt Miller boards like Byron young was not anywhere on anybody's board in fact Byron young was really only known as the guy that shares the same name with the defensive end of the Los Angeles Rams the other Byron young right the good Byron young that came out last year I think he was at Tennessee uh our Byron young was only known for having the same name as that guy and to be known only for that is not a a good thing essentially right and uh when the Raiders brought him in we watched his tape and you know I had predicted this guy was a bad pick and it does seem like he was a bad pick right it does seem like he was you know even to this point you know we watch Byron Young's tape in the preseason it's just not good and again I think there's a chance he's you know ultimately brought back I think there's a chance he can develop but it just doesn't look good right now let's watch some tape of the two guys that we picked up we'll go ahead and start with the defensive tack he's right here number 74 um he's an interesting player definitely I don't know what he's going to really bring to the Raiders to be honest uh here's another play here uh you got him lined up in the two ey technique or the one technique really the two ey technique uh at least there's a little bit of as Rush right there right uh is not crazy as he kind of gets out of his stance he'll have to continue to develop he was a sth round pick he is a rookie but uh this move right here is something Baron young would never do Baron young is never ever ever uh going to slant towards the left right so he locks in this guy Slants towards the left gets the right arm in there and then he spins back to the outside that's a pass first move right there b young has probably never done that in his career we'll look at two more snaps here um keep in mind I've never watched this guy's tape so I'm watching it for the first time with you guys here's another one uh you're going to see him recognize the screen he's going to come back and he's going to trip the running back it's a pretty good snap right there by him uh these are snaps from the preseason of this past season now it's interesting because he was a picked by the Colts I'm sure the Colts wanted him back but it's interesting that Tom Tesco actually was able to recognize this guy right uh it's surprising that Tom Tesco actually was able to see some upside with this kid right um pretty interesting player we'll see how it actually pens out the fact that the Raiders did claim him off the waivers I don't think he has to actually spend time with the Raiders three man roster I think he can be signed to our practice squad uh it's a different process when you steal from someone else's practice squad I remember McLendon Curtis is a guy that got stolen from our practice squad the Seahawks had to sign him to the active roster last year so that's not the case with these two guys and then you got a Harper he's run line up right here in the slot I believe this is some sort of cover three and uh and going I see him make a tackle it's all right not a not a not a great play but not not terrible as well uh there he is right here as well you're going to get a 5 yard run on this one he's going to essentially just make sure it doesn't hit for a touchdown it's an all right play as well uh these are all snaps from um this preseason as well there he is again uh you know nothing crazy you know we'll see what this guy actually brings to the Raiders um you know at this point it will be interesting to see what the Raiders actually do with uh with some of the linebackers you know we kept seven linebackers on the active roster at the moment some people have been speculating Tommy ikenberg might end up on the injured reserved and if that happens it'll be interesting to see which guy they actually promote to the active roster um we'll see what ends up happening you know so uh that's Harper right there for you guys the safety the Raiders brought in from the Los Angeles Chargers another thing that some people are saying is you know there's a chance the Raiders only claim this guy to give us some sort of insight into the Chargers defense that the Chargers have a new defensive coach this here and uh there's a chance that this guy's only brought in to kind of help with that and that might be actually fact right I don't 100% know but uh I also do want to add to this list of guys uh Sam Webb was another guy that was also brought back to the Raiders so uh Sam Webb is also back the Las Vegas Raiders he might not actually be at practice today not 100% sure but he was also claimed uh or he was also brought back to the Raiders as was David agoa that's another guy that was brought back so um that's your practice squad guys right there man and uh we'll see what ends up happening I'm sure we'll add a couple more guys uh let me know what you guys think about Byron young being released do you guys think he'll be back with the Raiders what do you guys think about this group of guys uh Sam WB as well has been added on these guys and what do you guys think about the two young guys why would the Raiders go out and bring those two guys in as some people do think that uh the Raiders released Byron young because of the fact that they were able to scoop up this other defensive tackle I don't actually agree with that I don't think it makes sense that you're going to you know because you're essentially doing a player wrong in that instance right if if you don't you know if you don't want Barron young you would cut him on the first day to let him have an opportunity to get claimed by another team you wouldn't wait an entire day to release him right so any guy you claim goes on the practice squad you're not going to essentially bring those guys um and that to release a guy right the way they would with Byron young so in my opinion they didn't release Byron young because they claimed the defensive tackle so I hope that makes sense but let me know what you guys think thumbs up subscribe and I will see you guys next time with another video
