so right now there is a ton of debate going on on whether Drake May should start for the Patriots or jacobe brassette and I want to go over a few things that head coach Jared Mayo had to say the past two days then give my thoughts on what I think is the best option for the New England Patriots so earlier today in an article from Mike Ree of ESPN he shared a quote from Jared Mayo about the quarterback competition Jared Mayo says this this is a true competition and I would say at this current Point Drake has outplayed jacobe Mayo said Monday in his weekly appearance on sports radio Weis the Greg Hill show now in saying that we have to take in the full body of work going all the way back to the spring in beginning of training camp and we'll see where we end up but those are the conversations that will happen here over the next couple days so if you are a Patriots fan you are probably pretty excited that the talk around jerk May has definitely shifted from early in Camp cuz when I was following along early in Camp you look at the reports coming out there was a lot of negativity surrounding Drake May certain people saying that Joe Milton is better than Drake May and now it looks like throughout Camp Drake May has progressed to the point that Mayo is willing to say that Drake May has outplayed jacobe brassette but the interesting thing that I think gives us an indication of what the Patriots will likely do is the fact that Mayo brings up he you know he says Drake has outplayed jacobe brassette but then he starts to bring up we have to take into account the full body of work going all the back way back to Spring in training camp instead of saying you know Drake has outplayed him you would think if a guy has outplayed another guy that he would probably be the starter typically but in this situation it sounds like you can't come to that conclusion and then here's another quote that I think gives some more insight here from Mayo he said it starts in practice and also in the game where Drake has played better in saying that everyone wants to know who this starter is going to be there are multiple factors that have to go into this decision one is the total body of work whether we're talking about the spring or the entirety of training camp which is something he brought up in the other quote but then also he says this and I would also say often times we forget about the overall experience that a guy like jacobe has which will also be weighted in the decision we have to make in the near future so in my opinion this is what I think Jared Mayo is doing um on the one hand if if Drake may work to not start and jacobe brasset were to be named the starter I think some people could question Drake May and you know his progress how he's developed and so he sort of covers that by saying Drake has outplayed jacobe so if the Patriots decide to start jacobe brette they are not necessarily saying that Drake isn't as good as jacobe they're saying that for right now we've had to take into account the former experience things like that and as he brought up here you have to take into account the overall experience of a guy like jacobe has and so the fact that he's bringing this up and has brought it up consistently in these comments makes me think that the Patriots are going to name jacobe brassette as a starter if his shoulder injury is okay which it seems to be from different reports that he's going to be fine it sounds like Mayo wants to put it out there first before they name the starter the reasoning for it happening because let's say they named jacobe brassette the starter um and people were questioning what was going on with Drake may he can say well Drake has outplayed him but jacobe has more experience that's why we chose him sort of keeping the negativity away from Drake May which I understand and so I guess the question is you know who who who who do you think should start does it make sense to start Drake May early being a rookie being that he doesn't have a lot of experience or is it better for him in the long hle if you allow him to develop and grow more behind the scenes instead of having to be put out there right away and I think that either way you can see some reasons why it could make sense when you look at the shaky offensive line of the New England Patriots that's a reason in itself to sit Drake May for a while and I think that offensive lines the more they play together typically the better they get I still don't think with the players the Patriots have here they're going to have a a very good line but that's one reason that you may want to say okay we're going to let Drake May sit for a while because we don't want to throw him out there with a really bad offensive line you also look at some of the really good defenses that the uh Patriots are facing in the first you know few weeks of the Season that could be another re reason why you want to sit him and maybe play him in a a better scenario and at the end of the day this organization is going to be judged on how good Drake May is as a quarterback and so I don't think that the Patriots are making a decision come week one for who they think you know has the best chance of allowing this team to win when it comes to week one while most you know well most times you would focus on that as as the head coach I think they're more going to be focusing on how can we ensure that Drake May is set up for a success because honestly if you look at week one playing the Bengals who would you trust more in a a shootout with um with uh Joe burrow jacobe brassette or Drake May based on what I've seen from Drake May and his overall Talent capacity I think that Drake May would probably give the Patriots a better chance in a game against Joe Barrow because I just do not see jacobe brette out dueling Joe burrow I don't think that's going to happen and if you look at jacobe brasset his career as a NFL quarterback an 85.3 career passer rating you put that up against quarterbacks last year um when it comes to passer rating he would have been 22nd overall so jacobe brette I don't think he's going to be the reason that you win games I think that he could maybe be a little bit safer because he's had more experience and he's probably not going to have as many ups and downs as maybe Drake May would have as he's trying to figure things out but personally if it was just based on you know week one who do you think gives the team a better chance to win I would say Drake May personally but there is a risk throwing him out there too early if things go south then the Patriots could have said oh maybe we should have waited a little bit because let's say you wait four weeks six weeks that's a whole month month and a half that you give Drake May more time to you know study the offense learn in practice learn from mistakes that the offense makes during the year the first few weeks you also hope during that time that the offensive line can maybe um get acclimated to each other a little bit more and be more improved and so I just think the the risk of putting Drake May out there early could outweigh the reward of waiting and so that's why I do think and based on those quotes I share with you that Mayo is saying you know Drake May outplayed him but you got to look at the experience you got to look at his his history here which gives me the clear indication that he's probably going to name jacobe the starter I don't know why he would have to say that if he wasn't it's like he's having to give a reason before he States it so that way people don't you know question why he's doing what he's doing when people think Drake May outplayed jacobe brette and so um there's always that debate around you know starting rookie quarterbacks and there's been you know you look at the past some guys have started early really early in their careers found success some guys have waited a little while found success and so I don't think there's a clear right or wrong answer I don't think it would be the end of the world if Drake May started because at some point you know what is four weeks six weeks eight weeks going to really do in the Long Haul I think if Drake May is Elite caliber quarterback back he would end up being that if he started week one versus week eight so at the end of the day I don't think it's the biggest deal but I do think the Patriots are going to sit Drake May to start the season that's sort of what I'm reading into right now from the Patriots um but I do think Drake May in the in the last preseason game he looks really really good you can see his his massive arm that he has there are a lot of balls dropped this preseason if you look back at um like every throw he's had there are some really nice throws he made that were just straight up dropped I think I counted maybe four passes dropped um in his preseason snaps and so I think he he may have a bright future it was against some backups against the commanders but he has the talent he has the ability and so I think that the the future could be bright for may he has a lot of talent and I'm excited to see what he could do but if you would like more NFL content feel free to subscribe turn on the post notifications you can also follow me on Twitter Luke Beller 3 for more NFL content and I'll see you guys next
