I started playing sport when I was very young, actually about seven years old. I began with wheelchair basketball, which was a sport I really enjoyed a lot. But then in 2005, I saw a documentary about wheelchair rugby and I was like, I want to try that sport. And so I started playing it and fell in love instantly. My name is Chuck Aoki and I play wheelchair rugby for team USA. Essentially, I have no sensation in most of my arms and most of my legs. That does cause life challenges and it meant I couldn't play the sports I initially wanted to play, but it allowed me to play wheelchair rugby, and that's been the greatest gift in my life. Para sport has changed my life in more ways than I can count, honestly. Before I found Para sport, I was pretty shy, I was nervous, I wasn't confident in who I was, but I found Para sport and it's transformed who I am as a person. It has made me confident. I have met some of my best friends through Para sport. I met my wife. I made memories that you can't buy, you know, the experience of entering into a crowd that's so loud, you can't hear yourself thinking, I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world. Para sport can give you a pathway to find people like you, to share your challenges with who can commiserate with you, but also celebrate the joy and success in your life, and help you bring some some light into it. I would encourage anyone to find a Para sport. It can be any sport. Find that sport that is for you, and find that way to be active and it can take you places you never dreamt you could go.
