President Biden humorously shared his past disappointment over discovering that his great-grandfather was not associated with a group known for violent actions against oppressive mind Foreman during a rally in support of democratic Presidential nominee vice president kamla Harris in Pittsburgh on Monday Biden recounted a story about his ancestor Edward Francis blitt I remember when my great-grandfather was only the second Catholic elected Statewide to the Pennsylvania Senate Biden said and back in 1906 opponents would claim guess what he's a Molly Maguire he continued explaining the historical context a lot of the English owned the coal mines and they mistreated the mostly Catholic miners there was a group called the Molly Maguire who if they discovered a foreman exploiting a worker would literally kill him they'd bring his body and place it on his family's doorstep Biden acknowledged Harris as he told the story which he had also used during his campaign with former president Barack Obama kind of crude but I've got to admit they accused my great-grandfather of being a Molly Maguire he wasn't but we were so damn disappointed Biden said with a smile before clarifying that was a joke that was a joke according to the library of the Pennsylvania Senate blitt was indeed the second Catholic elected to the State Assembly in 1907 succeeding William mcer who served from 1813 to 1817 Biden's visit to Pittsburgh followed a a week-long lowprofile vacation in reoboth Beach Delaware immediately after a separate Six-Day Retreat a democratic donor Joe kean's California Ranch Biden had cleared his work schedule before these extended holidays following a poorly received debate performance against former president Donald Trump in late June concerns about the 81-year-old president's stamina for another term intensified this led to increasing calls from Top Democratic party allies for Biden to withdraw from the race on July 21st Biden did step down and quickly endorsed Harris recent National polls show Harris with a narrow lead over Trump but the presidential election depends on individual State results and their electoral votes rather than the national popular vote
