so I think something all us Packers fans have been really curious about is what is this shift from Joe Barry's defense to Jeff Halley's defense really going to look like and we've already seen a lot from the off season looking at some of Halley's history seeing what he's done in training camp we've gotten somewhat of an idea we won't really know until the season starts but I want to take a look at a really interesting article from Packers reporter Tom Silverstein of packersnews.com he did a really article broke down the joint practice but sort of focused on the scheme of the Packers defense and some different things that he noted I'm going to leave a link down below I'm only going to share like a couple parts from it so if you want to read the whole thing get some more information feel free to go click on that link he has lots of great articles on the Packers so go check that out but first off here he starts off by recapping his biggest takeaways from the Packers Ravens joint practice for the defense he noted a great pass rush which is something we've seen consistently throughout all of training camp I think that the talent you have here um on the defensive line it's probably some of the best in the NFL with rwn Gary leading the charge he did mention that some of the Henry Derrick Henry runs took advantage of the defensive Line's aggressiveness and he also said that only a few passes were not contested and he said there one area where the Packers defense where the Ravens got the best of the Packers defense was in the Run game which is something something that we've witnessed for a long time if you've been a Packers fan is the consistency of the defense's inability to stop the run that has been a consistent Factor here in Green Bay for which feels like forever um but last year if you look at the Packers under Joe Barry they were the 28th 28th when it came to rush yards allow per game which is clearly not good only what three or four teams better than you but here's a quote from the article it says an area where the Ravens got the best of the Packers was the Run game newcomer Henry adds significant punch to their offense and it was evident on some of the runs he had Thursday he hit holes fast and had a couple of runs where he reached the second level in a hurry whether those were the result of the lineman getting up the field quickly and leaving holes for the back to run through is something to watch when the regular season rolls around so when you have any kind of defensive scheme there's always going to be some kind of weakness and I'm curious to see as the season progresses you know what are the weaknesses of this Packers defense could it still be the running defense which it seemed to be out of all aspects of it of it yesterday according to Tom Silverstein here um and I think that you know when you look at the difference the way that Matt LeFleur has talked about it that it's it's less of a read and react defense and more of an attacking style defense where in the past the defensive line was you know having to keep track of two gaps and now they're just sort of having to attack one Gap and be explosive in that way it sounds like from the different players and their perspective that there's going to be a lot more disruption in the back field which you would assume is is typically a good thing as well as a lot of tackles for losses things like that and so it really does sound like when you look at the talent of these these Packers Defenders and their skill sets that at least so far in Camp and the way they've talked that it sounds like they all feel very very comfortable in the way that this defense is being run and the ability where they don't really have to think as much they just get to attack and I I am curious though like what are the weaknesses going to be uh could it be that you know when they're getting so so quickly back there in the back field if they miss a tackle or if they just run by a back is that going to cause problems when it comes to the ability to stop the run I guess it comes down to you know your linebackers and and how they're coming in and sort of cleaning up behind those defensive linemen but there's lots of things here to watch in this defense this year and I think that it can be definitely easy to to only look at the the optimistic parts and and the positive Parts like this is going to be a very disruptive aggressive defense I'm still curious you know where are the weaknesses going to be could it be in the Run game just something to to keep an eye on and watch as we move forward I would assume though that you know when it comes let's say you're in first and 10 the team decides to run the ball these Packers defensive lineen are breaking through getting tackles for loss if you can get teams into you know second and 12 second and 13 it's very very tough to you know come from you know where where you're sort of behind the chains to start second down third down it makes offenses very one-dimensional where the pass rush can just sort of you know pin their ears back and and Rush without having to worry about the um running game so personally the way that this defense is being talked about it's much more exciting to me than than pass defenses with Joe Barry just because of the more passive approach we'll see if there's any weaknesses but honestly I don't know about you guys but I'd rather get beat you know being aggressive than just sort of sitting back and being passive that's just sort of my my take on on on defenses we'll see if that changes maybe if you consistently get beat deep and you're like okay maybe I'll maybe I'll change my mind on that take um but right now it's like I want to see some sorry some aggressiveness and really see what this Packers Divens can do and then here we'll end it off with this final note from the article and he notes that because the Packers defensive line is so aggressive that qbi will throw lots of checkdowns to avoid sacks and so here a quote that he had from Kenny Clark and he said this you're going to see that a lot against you're going to see that a lot against our defense guys are going to try to check it down Clark said that's our job up front to come up and just make those tackles and that's where the big hits come in we're taught to just go if teams are going to check it down so I guess when you look at this defensive line the fact that they're just firing attacking not really reading things as much just fullon blowing through the you know their gaps um offenses are as they're saying going to check the ball down a lot more often and it sounds to me like Clark is saying that it's also the job of these defensive linemen to make sure they're keeping an eye on the back or at least when the ball gets checked down to fly down and you know make those tackles and you know I think that Quay Walker he's such a quick Speedy guy he's probably going to have to keep an eye on lots of those um you know running back check Downs I think it comes down to the talent of those you know running backs and their ability to make guys miss uh but so far in in Packers in preseason it seems like they've done a a pretty good job of wrapping up making tackles I also think the safeties the Packers have added here Xavier mckenny Javon Boward Evan Williams are really physical really tough they just fly down really really quickly in this defense and so um I think that if there are low of check Downs it seems like the Packers have the the talent and the guys to be able to limit the offense's ability to you know to get big runs and big breakaways when it comes to those those kind of checkdowns and so it's going to be fun to see you know what this Packers defense can bring here it's going to be so much different than last year which I think most of us Packers fans are going to be pretty excited about I do think when you look at the Packers defense and the the skill here I think it'd be pretty tough to have a for this defense to be bad if you know what I'm saying when you have guys like Ron Gary one of the better pass rushers in the NFL Jer Alexander one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL Xavier McKenna one of the best safeties in the NFL this Packers defense BAS based just on player Personnel should be a very very good defense when you have you know great players at All In All Phases and those are just the the best guys I also throwing Kenny Clark on the defensive line and there's so many other guys here that we could bring up um that has been one of the frustrations I think here in Green Bay over the years with you know Joe Barry during his tenure was when you have so many former first round picks you know why is the success not coming and it's not all to throw on the coach obviously players don't always live up to their draft position you know where they were drafted but I think the Packers are in a perfect position to be one of the better defenses in the NFL if all things go according to plan um but that's all I wanted to share on this video if you want more Packers content feel free to subscribe down below and I'll see you guys next time
