NBC Bay Area's Christie Smith is joining us live with how Mayor London Breed and other city leaders are responding. Christie Well, the scene is clear today. People are out and about. But this is where it happened. I had a chance to speak with some people who were in the area shortly after the shooting yesterday. They tell me it wasn't until later that they learned who it was, and the extent of what happened. Meantime, city leaders are speaking out, vowing to increase police presence even further. We saw about probably ten cop cars come and kind of close off this area. The scene was clear today. One day after a robbery attempt and shooting Alexandra, Alessio was visiting the city for the weekend and saw the aftermath. We were making our way up to Union Square when we saw a tall gentleman kind of come out, and I thought he had been hurt, maybe in his arm, but it sounds like he was clutching his chest, and people around us said that someone was shot, and at that time we didn't know it was a 49ers player. 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot and hospitalized after an attempted robbery. Police say there was a struggle and the suspect, a 17 year old from Tracy, was shot. He was arrested quickly. In a statement today, the team said Pearsall was released from the hospital this afternoon, adding the team and the Pearsall family are thankful for SFPD and the first responders at SF general. I know everybody has been praying for his speedy recovery and we are wishing him and his family well and we appreciate the thoughts and prayers that have come in today. San Francisco Mayor London Breed was out in the city's high end shopping area where the shooting happened, and spoke with reporters. Since 2021, we've had an increased presence of police officers in the Union Square area, which is why when this event occurred, the police responded within a minute. They were within the area. So we typically especially on weekends, we have an increased police presence. But in light of the events yesterda, we've increased it even more. So to address some of the concerns that people might have. Other city leaders, including Aaron Peskin, whose district the shooting happened in, are also speaking out. My thoughts and prayers are with Ricky and his family, and thank God that he's going to make a full recovery. We want him out of the hospital and back on the field. And I also want to commend the San Francisco Police Department that was there within literally seconds. They heard the gunshots and apprehended the suspect. As the suspect was fleeing. It was it was unnerving, especially because, you know, you hear of riff raff and kind of things going on. But the fact that it was in broad daylight and kind of so close to Union Square. And some people we spoke with today were just visiting the area and just learning about what happened here today and said it was certainly very upsetting to hear and wished Pierce all well in his continued recovery, but also said they would continue to come back to the area.
