you have probably seen this massive ship here docked at Pier 82 in Philadelphia it's the SS United States once known as the queen of the Seas the vessel's caretakers are sending out an SOS now as it faces the threat of eviction we met Susan Gibbs her grandfather designed the boat in the late' 40s the ssus was intended to quickly move trips in the event of War but it wasn't needed and instead became a cruise liner being called the last West for a majestic ship of a bygone era Erica good morning it's hard to imagine South Columbus Boulevard and Pier 82 without the SS United States part luxury liner faing everyone from presidents and movie stars to businessmen and immigrants at part top secret Cold War weapon the United States was in a class of her own Gibbs gave Eyewitness News a rare tour of the ship recently she envisions a museum restaurant a banquet hall and Conference Center Gibb says the Conservancy is close to securing a Redevelopment deal but unless the United States can pay her bills this month she may never have the chance to revisit her Glory Days you may remember this ship has been in this situation before it has always found a donor in the 11th Hour they're hoping that happens again this time around so they're going to move forward with a fundraising effort at the Union League on October 29th but they really need the funding in place before that the absolute deadline to save the SS United States they say is October 31st we're reporting live in South Philadelphia Jan caribo CBS 3 Eyewitness News ongoing dispute out there between the SS United States conservancy and pin warehousing about unjust docking fees Chief investigative reporter Joe Holden looked in on the work being done to save the historic ocean liner new at 11: the clock is ticking for an old ocean liner that's looking for a new home the SS United States was built in Newport News back in the early 50s and right now is sitting at a port in Philadelphia and his lease is up after a federal judge ruled that it must leave by September 12th well Jones says uh the group has been working with Senator Kane's office and others to find a location in Newport News esamia County officials are discussing a new di of Attraction it's an effort to bring the SS United States a retired ocean liner to our water now there's a chance of an even bigger addition the SS United States in Newport News Virginia America crowns the new queen of its Merchant Marine she's the 51 T SS United States the nation's largest and fastest luxury ship Mrs Tom Connelly wife of the Texas Senator launches the $70 million super ler as a crowd of 40,000 [Music] [Music] oh you PR confident so why aren't you confident it's something to be sing and why are you so constantly I'll be going on the C where we're all tossing off your compliments while sexing on your parament [Music] so we wish continued Good Fortune for the SS United States newer of the atlan Blue River
