they would know pretty good they're from Pittsburgh also yes that that is true yeah yeah they do good all right so we heard from Kev and Noble let's go to our legendary campus icon I heard a rumor Mike the mailman that you were going to metaphor L now potentially rain on our parade which is out of character for you talking about that West Virginia game last week don't get me wrong pen State played really well offensively defensively they sure did they played really well but I just I'm just concerned about the quality of West Virginia I mean I I had them winning at most seven games this year so I so I don't know who who knows but I I don't I don't think I think we're getting more excited than we should about this about this team right now I don't even know who you are anymore okay all right all right going so lastek been gone for six months and I don't know man last week he has a 16 and0 easily winning the national championship this week a cautionary note from Mike to mailman saying pump the breaks a little bit okay talking about raining on a parade if you took Mike the mailman's betting picks last week you don't have a roof over your head when it rains because you're you're on a cardboard box in the side of the highway cuz he went 0 and four to start the year but but but it's a long season it's long Seas EAS to say that's a man who has a fat federal pension check coming in every two weeks easy for him to say not for the rest of us put a hard earned money on Michael man's Trends to Treasures which we're going to have more of coming up in a little bit and and and just will'll remind everybody if you bet the trends the whole season every season since he started yeah you you finished in the black every single time so you just got to look at the games and select carefully that's right and at your own risk all right Noble since you are practically an expat at this point you've been over coaching in Germany for so long it's great to have you back on Set uh spoiler alert everybody we're not going to talk a lot of Bowling Green Falcons football tonight it was really important for Penn State to come out and make a statement in this game because now we have a series of you know Joker Mac opponents and a byee in between there and they looked really really strong so give me your Topline takeaways from Penn State West Virginia well I think you know the defense played the way I think we all anticipated the defense to play and kind of to what Mike was saying right West Virginia don't know how good they really are are but they did have a veteran offensive line they did have a quarterback that could create some issues they were I believe one of the top running defenses in the entire I mean running offenses in the entire NCAA last year right so defensively they played really well right Tom Allen had those guys ready to go um the big thing to me was the other side of the ball right it was it was the way that that offense played they were aggressive that was a terrible poor I don't know even know what you're doing anymore like that was really bad that's distracting almost it's so bad so what I was talking that was an aggressive P just like cotal Nikki and all and those that was that was Mike y I was going for an explosive play I I called a trip triple reverse pass on Third and two yeah so I think when you when you when you look at the way that they played offensively they've got a lot of weapons it was really about what does Drew Aller look like this year right he was a true freshman last year again definitely I think a little bit handcuffed by a bad offensive coordinator um and you can tell that that he and cotal Nikki definitely jelled um you can tell that they have confidence in each other which is huge and the game was called that way and and you know to to you know like kind of like James said right they they pushed the ball down the field a little bit right they were throwing the ball down the field and and he looked really good doing it and of course then the the the the way that I'm not allowed to say physicality right but the way that he played right the physicalness of his but if my wife sees it she'll be mad she doesn't like it when I that's one of those words I'm not allowed to say a real word it's one of those stupid football words but uh and those are always in the lawsuit exactly it's like grit too that's exactly right so I I think that you could tell that it's his team the guys are playing for him and with him um and I think that cotal Nikki did a great job of using everything on the field to take advantage of of a bad West Virginia Defense I want to talk about the defense a little bit what what did you think so longtime listeners will remember that Brandon Noble was ranked by the center Deli times as the ninth best I paid a lot of people for those TRS but what did you make him number 11 Abdu Carter moving to the end we knew there'd be some Growing Pains potentially off sides first of all we'll start with that what would have happened if you jumped off sides twice what would what would Jo have stood next to this guy where is he right here and he would have yelled at me for a couple minutes and then P me back in the game but despite that he didn't look bad right no he looked great I mean I think that it was a good move right you know talk a little bit about the defense and Tony Roos had a great day right I think you know having him at middle linebacker you have the ability to take a guy like Abdul Carter very similar type of creature to um Micah Parsons right long Twitchy disruptive and put him at the line of scrimmage and create issues for offenses and they did that he definitely jumped the snap cout a couple times right he was definitely pushing the limit on the neutral zone but those are things from a defensive line perspective that you want from a defensive coaching perspective jumping off sides every once in a while since the end of the world you just don't want to do in those crucial situations or on early Downs when it getes them kind of off it gets them back on St yeah and key phrases every once in a while yes so what you want to do now again we talked about two Mac opponents a bye you want to take this ramp up period into conference play and you want to clean that sort of stuff up we'll talk about that a little bit more in the next segment but I right after your heart those defensive ends are freed up to Rick Havoc because of the strength of the Interior defensive line they run six deep at defensive tackle you mentioned Tony Roos I thought Kobe King looked very solid and and and both the safeties and the corners I mean the the depth on this defense and the impact guys at every level of this defense man you could just see that Tom Allen was given a fully stocked toy box and that's losing two Edge rushers you're losing Curtis Jacobs and three NFL caliber cornerbacks like credit to James Franklin and his staff Mike I I think Penn State on the defensive side especially is Rel voting not rebuilding I think Tom all's in heaven because he have all these good great athletes with him to work with and it's like wow it's mine to do a little different than IND that dude's in Bloomington Indiana the last several years now all a sudden he comes here and he is these guys at his disposal so Kev unlike the three of us you were in Morgan Town last week kind of give us the view from on the ground we were all worried about you and potential PTSD with the rain delay the rain delay did cost some PTSD because they evacuated us to their practice building their their uh indoor practice facility just like they did in uh Michigan State all those years ago so it was a little triggering that is that is true but uh yeah look Morgan's a great college town sort of like Auburn right the higher the acceptance rate yeah the higher the acceptance rate at your school like the worst experience it is for a fan right so like Penn State's around 50% you know you go to Northwestern that's like 10% they don't care but Auburn and and and West Virginia they're basically opening mions yeah it's like an it's like NFL environment anyway neither here nor there but the biggest difference to me I mean this is this was not really one of the James Franklin sort of wet dream preseason games where he just beats up on Delaware or whatever but and they may end up being like Mike says the offense just looked different than it than it had last year when Penn State was beating up on UMass in Delaware and all these quote unquote preseason games it just looked more together it looked more fluid uh we we caught some heat well I caught some heat for like we're beating you mass by 70 and I'm like but that off like there's just something wrong we needed three yards and we can only get two what's what's going on on here dare I say it looked as fluid as it did uh since the Jan Warhead era I understand the point you made earlier Mike last season West Virginia overperforms expectations they win nine to be finished last in the Big 12 this year maybe they regressed to the mean right but it's power four team there there are NFL draft picks on that roster it's a legitimate opponent and when you are playing a team like that that has a pulse okay this is not maction this is this is a legit team that could surprise people and contend for a wide open Big 12 title game birth you want to be able to dictate to that team on both sides of the ball and I I think that's what we saw from Penn State on Saturday yeah and look to to that point I mean that three-hour delay would have been much less Pleasant without that last second touchdown very uncharacteristic of of this team to be aggressive like that which I appreciate it but without that it would standing like this next to 100,000 inbred West Virginia fans would been much less Pleasant while there's lightning coming down on top of you when you're trying to stay dry you know what I've been waiting for a good time to break to go to his Trends to treasure hopefully make youall a little bit more money than he did last week right Mike and I think that's a perfect one so uh we're going to hop to a little break here we're going to hear Mike's Trends to treasure picks for this week when we come back boys for as good as Penn State looked last week again now you play a team like Bowling Green this is a time to clean up the little stuff so there are some things to improve and some other takeaways from the game I want to touch on so uh we'll be back right after Mike's and 1/2 at Northwestern but we still like the Duke Blue Devils plus the 2 and A2 next up we have Liberty versus New Mexico state liberty has covered the game five in the last six years so the play here is the Liberty Flames Minus the 22 and the last Trend this week is we're going to the NFL we have the Las Vegas Raiders versus LA Chargers the Raiders are 0 and four in the last four Road games we're going to keep talking about takeaways from that because I don't care about Penn State versus Bowling Green and neither does anybody watching unless the parents of any Bowling Green players have tuned in God bless them and maybe they don't care I care a little bit so Conor bezac I mentioned he's he's their quarterback and Penn State fans will remember him it's very nostalgic for me I made so much money betting against Conor bezac that one year he played for Indiana Indiana oh he was horrible he's a statue and Penn State's we're going to talk about our picks later Penn State's I think right now it's about 34 and a half Point favorites oh Conor beas like has to be like 10% against the spread that's not true but it has to be dang close because that this is like last chance you I think he started in Missouri and now he's been around a little bit he's been around Bowling Green is definitely last chance you it's kind of funny you know the Mac used to be the sixth best conference probably you know among you know you get the power five and of the the group of Fes Mac was the best now they're Pro they're arguably the worst right the people were going down to more of the Conference USA and the American and all that so um but I love that we keep schedu although I'd love to see some schedule diversity some UTSA or some two lanes what would you do I don't know but anyway but I'm I'm actually looking forward the Bowling Green has not been a great um mac program over the last decade or so but Chris you know as I know the only other two times we played them how important those games were yeah is the strangest stat to me we we've played Bowling Green twice prior to this game we're going to have on Saturday win number 200 and win number 300 for Joe 1987 and 1998 I just like a a weirdo ST which by the way this reminds me I didn't hear it personally but it was relateded to me the best West Virginia fan insult the best one and it it's the one that hit here the most after we won we're walking downtown and someone goes I hope that James Franklin coaches you guys for another 30 years you go 10 and two every year and he wins exactly 410 games I'm like that is the best that is the Absolut best insult that could ever happened anyway you know what I you know what I hope that too me too be all right that would be all right that would be all right anyway wow no man what do you got well I would just say no did he the quarterback you're talking about he did he play last year for bowling GRE he did he did y you know they only lost a really good Michigan game team by 25 points at Michigan well M everyone lost to Michigan by 25 points right they got up on you by two touchdowns and they ran out quarters but I know I know what you're saying I know what you're saying I still like Penn State to cover we'll get there I'm I'm glad glad you brought out basc though because again for whatever deficiencies West Virginia had Mike they did have an NFL caliber left tackle they had three returning starters on the offensive line two guys stepp in who had played a lot last year now you have a guy who is not decidedly not a dual threat like gar green was I think no well that's a chance to not just clean up the offsides penalties from last week it's a chance for Deni Dennis Sutton and Abdul Carter and some of the guys behind him to get on the board with some sacks yeah yeah you want the the guys that can't move they're the best ones right you know when when you've got a guy you know is going to be at like eight yards like Steve schner Steve Schnur that's exactly right Steve wasn't very mobile not many mobile quarterbacks when I play right so so when you got a guy though and and we talked about a little bit on the podcast right you know maybe the production wasn't there from a dline perspective like a numbers production kind of deal but they were very disruptive they were they were all over place they were chasing things down this is a week where you have an opportunity for lack of a better term to pad your stats right this is this is a if you can get two or three this week and put them in your pocket and save them for later like that that's a good deal look not that Penn State needs this scheming to this level for this game but Conor beack is half the reason Tom Allen got fired so that man even better man knows how atrocious you know but the other is that that's a that's a very good like he knows that quarterback right so that that's something as as a DC or a a defensive coach right you you have information now on this guy right what is he good at you know those kinds of things so you've been around him and he got you fired you're going from Michael penx to Conor be oh anyway Mike Penn State has for my money the best turf grass program in America MH and I think Conor bzac is going to become intimately acquainted with that fact before the end of Saturday so let's talk about some other things coming out of Saturday's game that folks can look for uh as Penn State takes on Bowling Green uh have you talked about the importance of that score at the end of the half before the long rain delay you know it reminded me a lot of Brenton strange getting the score or go to the locker room touchdown against Purdue to start the 2022 season because that was a momentum shifting score right at the end of the half that in that game you look back actually shifted the result it did here's what I want to see most of all this game and it's it's bound to happen is more than five guys catch balls and more than two wide receivers catch balls right yeah even even last year when Penn State couldn't find anyone to catch a throw they averaged about nine pass catchers per game nine people with they completion per per game five against West Virginia and only two wide receivers Harrison Wallace and Amari Evans and that's it and obviously Harrison W they didn't really need anyone but Harrison Wallace he looked like the number one wide receiver that we all hoped he would be when he was healthy yes so they didn't need it but you'd love to see Liam Clifford and Julian Fleming get mixed into the passing game more than just blocking uh that that's what I want to look for is more than just Five Guys catching the ball deep offensive line for Penn State I thought the starting group played well credit to Phil troutwine for bringing these guys to campus and then developing when they get here and I think this is a week where you have you know James Franklin talks about n guys who he thinks can play once we get to conference games I think there's probably 10 or 11 guys who if Preston to duty could perform pretty well I want to see all of them take meaningful snaps I'm talking about rotate the offensive line in the first half and once we get into the third quarter let the entire second team play as a unit yeah yeah yeah and and that gives them a lot of confidence to be able know they're going to play yeah and playing together in a game it's one to insert one guy you know you put the left guard right you move the right tack with the starting group that unit has to play as a group of five right and so I think that what you just said is exactly right you know sprinkle those guys in it's weird most o lines don't rotate like that's not a thing that usually happens defensive line rotates line I know but but it's it's something that's unique and so I do think though that the faster they can get that second group in in there to play a lot of football the better and that that's again start fast don't take your foot off the gas right and let those guys get in as a as a group of five and play we got a lot of exciting guys I want to see Cooper cousins blocking guy right like people like that and you get four games now you can play four games not including the bowl game the playoffs or the uh the conference Championship four games ining the regular season to keep your red shirt so this is one they're definitely gonna at least get guys their first snaps yeah theoretically if you lost a conference title game and then played for the national championship you could play nine games and still go into the next year with your red shirt in TCH crazy yeah I mean look that's highly unlikely to happen but it's mathematically possible now when you were at Penn State practically everybody R we didn't even talk about it so when you're a young guy who is going to get the opportunity to get on the field maybe only a handful of times and this is one of those games where you're going to play significant snaps what what do you get out of that as a young player when you're up against an opponent like this where you get the chance to be on the field and and do more than be out there for a kneel down yeah know it's it's big I mean you you have to figure out kind of how to take it seriously right like there's there's definitely a challenge to be a backup at any position at any level right and being ready to play when it's time to play um in a game like this you know you're going to play or you should play right and actually can kind of work the other way sometimes you're a little disappointed with how you play or when you get in the game you know what I mean like those kinds of things but it is it's it's a big deal and and it's your you know for for younger guys especially guys that are freshman that again talking about being able to steal red shirt but be able to go out in the home opener and play a significant amount of snaps is is a big deal and and it's there's nothing nothing like actually playing in the games like practice isn't like Spring ball isn't like it's playing in the game against another team is is how you get better nothing like being before the crowd in Beaver Stadium so inject that into their veins early so when the SEC comes calling with the bag of cash maybe they think that's a good point too yeah that's it's an odd twist that I had not thought of so talking about the SEC calling with a bag of cash I I I just wanted to share a little segment from the blue and white players show which uh Keith goon conin and Nas Hawkins do at the Penn State golf courses every Monday you can watch it on Wednesday nights here on the four the blog YouTube channel they debuted their show for this season after the West Virginia game and they had Nick Dawkins on yeah and that dude is just built differently yeah you can tell when he talks oh yeah that's that's a team captain talking and goon and anas talk to him about the journey he's been on he's a Fife guy y he had to wait his turn between behind two NFL centers and there were opportunities plenty of them for him to leave and play and he talked about why he stayed committed to pen state so good but you know what you didn't run away and go hit the transfer portal I'm I'm leaving I'm leaving I'm going to take my ball I'm going to go home you stayed through here and then it paid off for you it's gonna be a heck of a season for you thank you and on that note I want to ask you doc so you're a guy like he said that that waited his turn um and I'm sure there were highs of that and there were lows of that and there were times where maybe you didn't want to stick around and fight through it but you ultimately did in hindsight what do you think was the the biggest benefit of taking that time learning going through the adversity to where you are today yeah I would say the biggest thing is just understanding why I do the things I do in my my commitment I think the the biggest biggest piece of it like you said there's highs and lows to it um but I gave my mom and I gave coach Franklin my word that I would be here for 45 years that I would earn a degree from me I earn a master's degree from pan State um I think when you're around this facility when you're around this area around this city around these people around these fans and you see how much they delve into it how much passion there is for this program how much passion there is for this University um you can't walk away from something like that especially when I myself have invested so much time um I'll say even before the season um I sat down at my dad's grave and told him that I would play here I would be a guy here I would help uh uh just invest so much into this program as it's done for me and I've changed so much as a man just being around uh my teammates being around these people and uh it would be it would be a dang shame for me to walk away from something that so much time has been put into when it's right there um we there's a quote I see it's so they muddy the water so you think it's deeper but it's it's so it's always right there and I told myself I would play here I knew I was going to play here and I put so much action and intentionality and spoke into existence I knew it was going to happen so why would I walk away from something I knew it was going to happen do you get me you think Kevin they're going to cover the the 32 to what is it 34 point spread it's sits at 34 right now as we're live so it peaked at 34 and a half is that right did peek at 34 and a half if you got that number I don't know but so look first of all Nick Dawkins a guy right like you can tell unbelievable that first offensive play when they clapped the snap count and Nick screwed up and snapped the ball and Drew just gets in everyone's face I mean that had to be partially because he want to stand up for his guy that just got Jed by the opposing team right so in that vein I'm gonna say Penn State scored 53 points for Nick Dawkins and his first home start I don't know to seven some some third string nonsense little Li Delaware broken play Zion Tracy will be on in the fourth quarter so it's it's 53 to7 I don't know something like that I often think about that kid who just hit the outside and and was one broken tackle and he goes to the house in Beaver Stadium for the Delaware Blue Ends he is going to be 90 years old and telling his great-grandchildren you know I scored a 60 yard rushing touchdown at Beaver Stadium against Penn State I I don't even know who you are anymore honestly if you're tuning in live and you missed the start of the show Mike the mman kind of pulled his punches on that one I thought was very invigorating exciting I as you know I was kind of off the bandwagon back performance Virginia yeah and now you're just you're just dropping bombs you're like oh they're Mountaineers they're trash they're overrated don't get too excited all right but what what do you got Bowling Green Falcons versus the NY Lions I one of the Falcons I remember when Penn State used to play Air Force and they actually bring their Falcon in and they swing let him go and they can fly right back to the trainer this is why we have you on this show it's a long time long time a long time so much but I think I think the number's High I think the number is a little high I think U it is a little hot I feel Vindicated but but I also still think Hammer the 34 everybody but I still think Penn State will win by 39 so we're going to cover well now I feel that's good I know we've talked about this before we've been doing this show for nine years which is as yeah astonishing to me astonishing thanks again to for the bloggy and and and and coners Medical Associates and and and Edie score prediction I I I am with Kev actually I I I think Penn State Rings up a big number and I don't even think Bowling Green finds the end zone in be Stadium I've got uh I was going to say 52 but you're right in honor of the great Nick Dawkins not to mention goon and chocolate thunder I'm going with 53-6 for Penn State over Bowling Green and I'm going to close the show by asking you guys for one thing you are looking for on Saturday it can be on the field it can be off the field it can be in the tailgating Lots Mike the mailman go I have a I go to many tailgates uh we know you do he's so popular he's is BR just I'm I'm sorry it is Brutal by the way getting him to come to your tailgate because it is just nonstop hangers on you you got to make sure you bring a Sharpie so you can you know sign autographs you know take a lot of pictures it's terrible don't invite Mike the mail the hardest part he has to get permission from his Federal parole officer to go outside of his house so you got to set it up in advance all right go ahead yeah go ahead I like I actually like the food in tailgates I'm not a that much of a drinker as you know but I just like the the good stuff good food that's you like the good stuff and and the blue band I like the blue band too that's what I'm looking forward to uh Ethan grunk me in the third quarter is what I'm looking forward to leave it at that continue doing what they did last week right which is go out start fast be aggressive right and then and then keep the foot on the gas all the way through the game whether it's the first string the definitely in the first half because they go quickly because they're so good and it's better than those chicken baskets which they uh change the chicken on last year to Great controversy can I end the
