the state oh what an effort Lo one manown goodbye from sboy Stadium it's college football as unlb opens at home for the first time since 2012 as they play hosted Jackson State it's the rebels and tigers on the Mountain West Network on campus insiders hello everyone so good to have you with us alongside Rebels great quarterback Caleb Herring I am Ray Crawford and really Caleb the storyline coming into this season for you NLB obviously to improve off a three and N last year but who is going to throw the football and be the quarterback two good ones in Johnny Stanton and Kurt paland as they open up the season and that's right both of these young quarterbacks have shown that they're capable of starting this year they've been battling since Spring ball all through off season season both have had solid fall camps we'll see how good they become as they open up against Jackson State tonight and it is Johnny Stanton who will get the first offensive snaps for unlb no matter who's throwing the football for the rebels you got the best arguably receiver in the Mountain West and Devonte Boyd a guy that they're talking about has NFL potential absolutely Devonte Boyd has been a model of consistency at unov in each of his 25 games played at unov he's had at least one reception and that's no easy task on the other side you've got Jackson State from the swag Tony Hughes his first ever head coaching game in this one after more than 30 years as a career-long assistant inherits a program that struggled a year ago one solid player they have defensively keep an eye on number 29 javancy Jones and that's right Javan Jones is a player that coaches are talking about has Sunday potential he's projected this year to finish in the swag conference among the top in the defensive player of the year uh run all right so paland deck and Stan are going to have to keep an eye on javancy Jones we welcome in the third member of our team sheay peer with more on the rebels quarterback decision Shay yeah guys as you mentioned it's Johnny Stanton that will get the start he's the former Nebraska corn husker and I'm told that this is a decision they made only earlier this week and they wanted to make it much earlier on in the off season however neither one of these guys really separated themselves until later on so the differences between the two you look at Stanton he can handle short yard situations Red Zone situations he got great arm strength he's got great velocity and despite spending two years at Nebraska and one year at Jo he does doesn't know this system very well and that's where paland has the strength he knows this offense in and out now I talked to Tony Sanchez and he said yes Stanton will start and if he gets this offense going he's not going to disrupt his flow but we're very likely to see a quarterback change at some point tonight guys that should be interesting a lot of stars and fast that's the way Tony Sanchez describes his offense UNLV looking for their first season opening win since 2009 Jackson state has never beaten an FBS team one of those two things are going to change kickoff from Las Vegas and S Bo stadium is coming up e e for 2 first be point SE 45 e [Music] oh minut support e [Music] there you get a look at some of the players lining up at those skill positions Darren Woods Jr very high on him a young wide receiver who's worked his way into the rotation as a young player second down here and it's Stanton on the play action throws it to The Far Side he's got Boyd who Wiggles free he's clear Devonte Boyd is going to go in for his second touchdown and it's unbelievable already two scores here in just a few minutes gone by a 32 yd strike from Stant the boy and what a receiver a weapon have on the edge for any quarterback but let alone a Young quarterback coming in you see he's just waiting out there to make a play and Stan's getting out of the edge showing his ability to run a little bit and he's coming off of the edge and you see Devonte Boyd as the misdirection gets us the Devonte sitting out waiting for the pass he just dumps it off to him and Devonte boy does the rest weaving in and out of Defenders finding his way to the end zone so ston now perfect three for three for 90 yards so I guess those Jitters that were there any kind of jitters in getting his first uh FBS start are kind of long gone absolutely the confidence is probably at an all-time high right now he's he's realizing I can do this I got Playmakers around me that can help me do this and it's just about doing your job and that's all he's doing right now so pantels on for the extra point and the rebels crowd entertained so far by two strikes from Stan to Devonte Boyd and it's good for pantels to make it 14 nothing UNLV as they turn a turnover into six points on the Stanton 32 yd strike to Devonte Boyd and a little play mix misdirection there Stanton goes and Boyd finds his way to the end zone 14- nothing here in Vegas e e e solid start here for Tony Sanchez and his UNLV Rebels and it's got to feel nice too coming off that 3 and9 season it had to be a long off season to come out here with a good solid start absolutely all offseason you've been dealing with the the the aftermath of a terrible season by in win and loss standings you've been preaching to these guys hey stay with it we got something good here to have success this early is definitely a positive thing so pantels has it teed up and he'll kick it away xaven Bingham the Deep man will take it about eight yards into the back of the end zone and for the Touchback and so Jackson State now will come back out and try this again so you know you don't want to get too high you don't want to get too low if you're the Tigers I mean it is quick here just barely seven minutes gone by in the first quarter and you're already down 14 to nothing you've thrown an interception in your first pass what do you think the objectives are offensively for Jackson State on this drive well I think the objectives are to find your comfort zone find a rhythm to get something going I think Tony Hughes talked about it earlier it's not about what they do it's about what we do it's about how we respond to adversity this is a great chance early for his offense to see how they respond to adversity see if they can get something going there you see some of the backs and receivers here for this Tigers team Daniel Williams number 81 going to keep a close eye on him there you get a look at Carl Ali one of the young players that coach uses high on but Williams number 81 they're talking about him as a potential Sunday guy as well in the NFL Jackson State such a long line of some great historic players to come out as Ivy decides to keep it himself he goes down and the helmet comes off and that's tele somebody that you're going to be hearing a lot from this season from the rebels meets the quarterback up in the hole and finishes the play t to Lele an impressive player and has been a really a stall on that defense look at the Jackson State Tigers offensive L combined one starts from those guys up front part of 17 returning players returning starters here for Jackson State Ivy over the middle has his man and it is oi complete across the 40 and that's good positive movement there in a first down for the Tigers absolutely you see early that the tigers are trying to spread this team out I think they they realize that up front is probably not their advantage they're trying to spread this team out that's three straight pass attempts one ended up in a quarterback run but they're trying to spread it up and you see here picking up the temple as well they got a couple of good backs Robert Johnson one of them the top returner 409 yards in a couple of touchdowns but Ivy electing at least right now to go to the air this one goes into the ground sometimes the the best pass is at a guy's feet right there's nothing wrong with that there's nothing wrong with the defender the defender can beat you sometimes and it's okay to let the defender beat you as long as you live to fight another day you saw there Tor mctire right off the line of scrimmage just mauling the receiver Jeremiah balanga another positive defensive player as you look at the defensive line here here for UNLV and Tony Sanchez hey look he said we want to play hard-nosed on defense and can't bear the defensive coordinator it really wasn't sure what he was going to expect if he had to pin something as a strength probably the depth at linebacker the pass is that caught as he stay in bounds though incomplete as that uh pass Falls intended for Benji Parish would have been an impressive back shoulder catch there fitting into a a tight window there is lonz he fit that into a tight window he saw the receiver did his best to make an attempt to catch it but he was ruled out of bounds on the catch just not enough space to work with there on the outside Paris just three grabs last year for 19 yards Tory mctire the rebel on the coverage now Timeout on the field looks like they're going to review if it was an incomplete pass indeed well they'll take another look at it because right now it be third down and 10 and Jackson State just wants to keep this momentum going right now and try to've been able to put together string together a couple of positive plays here Bo just get to Midfield right now for a first down would be a victory right now absolutely and like we said earlier you just want to try to find a rhythm and that first first down definitely gets you Rhythm you see here if he makes a catch I'm not sure if the ball's wiggling or anything but it looks like he made a a great effort to get the catch just a matter if he got down inbounds with control I tell you bance that is an impressive effort I'm I I don't know how the replay offici are going to decide but it looks to me like he got it there's a grab there a little bit of a bobble then he hauls it in that's just whether that knee hit and he's able to stay in bounds as uh they you get a look at the officials standing on one of the star dust and a look at our crew for this one tonight opening up in Las Vegas so much optimism for UNLV it's funny we had our conversation with Tony Sanchez you meet with him and you walk out of the room you feel like they're going to win the national title absolutely so optimistic he has an effect on you I guess you walk into his office and he's always upbeat he's always positive talking about the future as we take another look at this but Tony Sanchez always talking about the future just seems to be so excited about where this program is going you can't help but feel that excitement as well we're going to find out if the officials in the replay crew are in mid-season form here looks like they've come to a decision and uh let's go down here for the official call let's see if this is going to hold stand or be reversed all right so indeed not enough evidence there to overturn that so they're going to continue and stay with the call on the field incomplete absolutely and one of the key things to look at there is the language that the official use he said that that the call stands that's not necessarily saying it's confirmed it's just saying there wasn't enough to overturn it so looking at the video there was no conclusive evidence to say oh it was a catch we're just going to keep with the call in the field that's got to drive you a little crazy as a former quarterback yourself I mean that close inches away from having a first down instead now you're facing third 10 right and you're you're put into one of the worst situations as the defense has an open play with right now they can do whatever they want to you they know what you have to do you have to get 10 yards so what we'll see what the rebels doing what Jackson State comes to counter with it this is one area UNLV wants to improve getting off the field on third down pass near side and that's going to be caught it looks like a complete pass there as Carl oi comes up with the grab an impressive catch as they get the first down and that is a big play for their offense getting these chains moving on another big play see here the replay the coverage is good it's solid quarterback has nowhere to go but then he finds a man in tight coverage the defender unable to locate the ball but the offensive player comes down with it thereus Mutan on coverage there for unlb so a fresh set of downs here for Ivy and hands it off that's Joshua Bates with nothing and nowhere to go up the middle for his first Carry of the night and that was the first design run that we've seen Jackson State do I know coach Tony Hughes has talked about before the game being balanced and not knowing not giving the defense tips on what you're going to do next they've come out and thrown a lot of pass plays you see here they're trying to get something going on the run baites a local product from right there in Jackson Mississippi 47 carries 192 yards no trips though to the end zone a year AG go hoping he can change that in this game here tonight ivy with time to throw and he's got baits he spins free on second down finally brought down out by Ryan melen as he drives him out of bound and that's a good pick up there on second down make it a third and manageable you see again for for saying that they're under siiz this Jackson State offensive line with their experience is doing a good job of keeping the pocket clean for lonz in the pocket I mean he's had time it's just a matter of finding an over receiver and if he's going to get down the field far enough that was one of the concerns Tony Hughes mentioned to us earlier this week when you turn on the tape you instantly see the size differential between UNLV and the guys he has up front Ivy going Far Side that's incomplete 10 and jerus M and again there yov brought the pressure up the middle offensive line did a good job in the initial in the initial wave but just not able to find the receiver and connect for the first down yardage but it looks like they're thinking about going here for Jack and stateus on fourth down big test here for both UNLV one of the best teams in the country on fourth down Kent bar this is going to be a good test for his team early see if they can get off the field here Oly the man that was in motion Ivy's pass is caught Benji Parish has it a first down and a fourth down conversion inside the 15 and again this is a good sign for Jackson State they're finding ways to move the ball it's not the cleanest way it's not the most efficient way but they're making plays when the numbers are called that's two great catches on the edges there in tight coverage quarterback's fitting it in there receivers are making plays and picking up the yard as necessary now all of a sudden when it things look like the wheels might fall off here early for the Tigers they've been able to settle down and Ivy has been a steady Presence at quarterback here for now a a third fourth consecutive here we'll see how he can do once things tighten down here in the Red Zone things get a lot quicker things moving a lot faster Ivy to his left throwing toward the end zone and it falls incomplete as Darius muton on the coverage now although they were not able to connect there they went play action hav't established run but the play action did its job and I'm I'm sure coach Kent bear is going to look at this in film and be kicking the defense because there was a man running free in the end zone I think that Ivy just missed him I think Kent bear is going to have fits about this in the field room but there was a man loose and luckily for the rebels Ivy wasn't able to hit him now plenty of film for the coaches I'm sure to be looking at as the pass thrown behind and perhaps maybe a little bit of miscommunication tein Garrett wasn't quite turned around expecting that pass from Ivy right again they wouldn't play action tried to dump it off to the tight end sneaking out of the back field he just wasn't ready his eyes went around didn't see it that the quarterback had to get rid of it quickly because of the pressure but he just wasn't able to get his head R quick enough to see the pass coming so Jackson State one of two on third down conversions and they're going to get their third opportunity here it's third and 10 from the rebels 15 again they're spreading out the field getting that defense stretched out five players lined up at receiver Ivy is going to keep it himself as a hole up the middle breaks one tackle spins will they get to the end zone and they're going to call him down it looks like just shy of the goal line montiz Ivy showing some moves and boy he is a load to bring down Troy Hawthorne finally dragged the big fella down 215 pounder an ivy and that's something that uh that coach talked about Coach h talked about in the pregame saying that Lam mantiz looking at him he has the size and potential to do a lot of damage on the ground he's not being that effective but you see there he shows some of his skills powering it down breaking tackles getting down as close to the end zone as he could I think he's bigger than 215 don't you I absolutely think so I I mean there's no way that's just 2115 I mean a Johnny St 245 Ivy can't be 215 no and these refs are are getting you're in their hands full again another review already here in the first quarter two reviews going up to the booth already I'm going to take a look at uh at this one perhaps this one will go in Jackson State's favor the last one the pass an incredible catch but the call the field stood as incomplete and now they're going to take a look to see if Ivy maybe somehow made it into the end zone for a touchdown and I'll tell you it was close there's a lot of bodies falling around you know you can't really tell on the live feed where his knees hit hit and when where the ball is when they do hit see here he's making an effort but I I think he's going to be short it look like that elbow comes down for sure before the line they're going to be inside the one yd line but it looks like he comes down short of the goal line boy he was it was all Hawthorne could do to kind of drag him down just kind of hitch his Wagon on it absolutely absolutely hold on for the ride hold on to the calvary comes and that's exactly what he did there well it appears by our vantage point on the replay that he is indeed just shy of the goal line as they continue to take a look at it Jackson State we mentioned out of the swack coming up from Jackson Mississippi and head coach Tony Hughes a lifelong assistant going back to the mid 80s spent time at Southern Mist as we get another look at it that is great effort there by Ivy you know it's interesting too because we talked to Cotton Barney or Barney Cotton rather for and let's see here what uh the official review is going to conclude so indeed the ruling on the field will stand as just shy of the goal line is Ivy so here you are Caleb what do you do I mean you've got a big quarterback and Ivy that can certainly push the pile a little bit what do you think might be the best option here for Jackson State absolutely I think coach Tony H has mentioned early that he doesn't think that the matchup in the interior in in their favor so I don't think turning around and handing off is going to be the best situation now you do you just saw your quarterback bull his way down to the goal line a quarterback sneak is not out of the question here you can see him do a quarterback sneak four times in a row if you need to because they they've got six inches to go here Ivy out of the shotgun and he is going to keep it himself a nice stiff farm and he's going to be stacked up the UNLV defense the ball's on the ground but does go out of bounds the Jackson State will hang on to it and I think UNLV did a great job snuffing that out Ryan melen and leading the way for the red shirt absolutely I think everybody in the stadium knew based on the last play that we saw that the quarterback was gonna have the ball in his hands I think nobody thought that he was gonna go to the edges I think the pressure was up the middle and you know he did a good job stopping up the middle forcing it to bounce outside and then they rally to the ball forcing it out and knocking it out and getting some a more negative play out of it you see the linebackers t l to lelay one of the captains along with Molen on that defense so now ivy has a little time over the middle has a man and he's going to spin free and reach for the end zone and it looks like he's in touchdown Jackson State as Tevin Garrett gets the Tigers on the board to cut the lead in half after the P if they're able to convert and then again you see that the offensive line holds up long enough for Ivy to find an open man and then just effort at the end of the play you catch the ball short of the end zone what are you going to do with it are you going to say that's good enough no he's going to spin fight and cl his way and try to make the goal line there well a lot of size here for Jackson State Matt Lee was the man trying to stop him from getting into the end zone but Garrett able to make the grab and then kudos to Ivy he's really show showing the Poise that you would expect from one of the Marquee players of the swag absolutely he has a lot of experience coming in out of the last season he put up some pretty big numbers so he's played before he's been here before it's just a matter of staying comfortable staying calm in a situation where you're down not pressing too much and here it looks like uh Jackson State's going to line up with a little bit of trickeration here for the the conversion yeah let's see what the plan [Music] is as they get on the board with the touchdown and now Tony Sanchez it looks like he's standing over here with special teams coordinator trying to figure out exactly what kind of look they're getting and we talked to them about that yesterday a whole new staff for Jackson State it's really kind of a mystery especially here in their first quarter you're not exactly sure what they're going to do absolutely you're not really sure how they're going to line up on a normal play and then given they're going to come out with some trick play on two-play conversion you have no way of knowing what this play is going to do and how to line up to it but unlb did a good job of of lining up to it and getting things matched up all right so Christian Jackman was lined up at the near side far as a receiver so he is the kicker he'll move into position now to try the extra point attempt the left footer kick on its way and it's through and Jackson State able to cut the lead in half for 1-7 so montiz Ivy and the Tigers overcome an interception and being down 14 to nothing and Ivy hits Tevin Garrett to cut the lead in half e e tril UNLV 14 to nothing the rebels got on the board made it look easy and you started to think it made it look so easy that uh they might start to run away with it but Jackson State kind of settled into a Groove and was able to score and that's what coach Tony Hughes told us he was looking for and there's going to be adversity early how are you going to respond they did a good job there their second offensive series coming down and responding putting seven points on the board all right so Christian Jackman has it teed up for Jackson State and it's Darren Woods Jr the young talented receiver who is deep for the rebels and he's going to take it at about the 11 with some steam behind him across the 30 yd line of the 40 Cuts back up field near Midfield Darren Woods Jr making his Rebels debut in this one and he should be pretty happy about that I would think he's making an impact special team players have to be special and there he is getting the rebels in plus territory already you see here finding a team up the middle and what's impressive about him is here at the end of the run as a young player he's not looking for the sideline he's cutting back up and finding contact finishing the Run giving the rebels excellent field position on their third series here so outstanding field position here as Johnny Stanton brings the offense out one more time a lot of time remaining here in this first quarter we've had some reviews official reviews have gone up to the booth so perhaps a little slower first quarter than normal but it's Thomas Lexington Thomas with a nice carry up the middle you see there that size that Tony Sanchez talked about in his pregame the size up front the big difference that it can make you see they're opening holes against this team that's something that you didn't see very much again uh uh with unov last season their running game was primarily Edge run uh getting things misdirection and going to the edges but that was straight down the pipeline up the middle moving the line of scrimmage and Barney Cotton told us yesterday that it will help the passing game too eventually right absolutely so first down and give it to him again Thomas with a nice spin move inside the 20 and he's brought down and stopped but not without getting another first down here for UNLV javancy Jones hearing his first name called with the Stop and there you see like the first series they open up with two straight runs big chunks of yardage coming straight down the pipeline again looks just like the last play right down the line of scrimmage Lexington is not a big back but he likes running between the T tackles as as coach cotton told us so first down here for UNLV from the 17 Thomas again up the middle does he have enough to get to The End Zone Lexington Thomas is in for his first score of 2016 and it's 20 to7 UNLV and it looks like unlb said that drive we're going to run it down your throat and we're going to see if you can stop it I think that was a a a true Testament of size up front making a difference you see here the reverse out handoff right down the pipeline just again and then Thomas bble to make the last man miss and basically Walks Into The End Zone almost untouched Thomas congratulated on the sideline and that's something again Barney Cod told us yesterday the offensive coordinator the the weight that they've added they they're much bigger up front on the offensive line allowing them to move people around and that's what they want to try to do more of this season pantel is on for his third extra point of the night already in this one 217 UNLV so Jackson State state scores but Lexington Thomas an outstanding series The Rebels Back on Top by 14 e bright lights to the loss of Vegas strip lighting up the sky here in the desert as UNLV attacks seven more onto the board Lexington Thomas with his first touchdown of the season the High Roller had a chance to go up in that the other day 550 ft looking straight down I interesting had the whole car to myself it was it was fun jerus mole one of the deep guys here to receive for UNLV as Evan pantels is has it teed up for yet another kickoff attempt here for the rebels and Kicking It Away here to the Tigers they've yet to get a return on a kick this evening this may be the first no it's going to bounce on the b in the end zone and bounce out of the back of the end zone so still no kick returns yet so special teams Department should be pretty happy Mak the Special Teams folks happy absolutely they're getting some work here early at least for the the kicking unit for UNLV the return unit for Jackson State hasn't had a chance to get after it but they they've got a lot of work here early as far as lining up and seeing if they're going to get a chance to return it what's interesting is Evan pantel is a sophomore transfer a winning the job over the incumbent last year Nikolai borin Nikolai borin is a kicker who's had some experience here in unob he's he's a physical guy he likes to get down there in the mix after he kicks it yep former linebacker absolutely yep and uh pantels though winning in a tight battle over the returning starter in boron from a year ago so Jackson State's offense back on the field with Ivy in command once again on First and 10 this time he's going to keep it himself and dive ahead for a pick up of about four on the play bring up second down and six 29 see they're going to a little bit of a Zone read trying to find a way to get that run game going they've got some Success Through the air but coach Tony Hughes he harped on wanting to be balanced and you have to be balanced in in this game in order to keep defenses guessing and there they got a nice Chunk on first down let's see if that's going to work for them here a little bit then the handoff coming up the middle and cutting back to the near side for Jackson State in the pickup nice pickup and another first down as Jordan Johnson gets his first Carry of 2016 and there you saw for the first time I think even though they've had some success the Jack and State Line made a hole they were able to control the line of scrimmage on that play part of it due to the Zone read concept A little bit of misdirection keeping the the linebackers guessing but they were able to make some space for the running back to wiggle through and pick up a big chunk on second down moving the chains Johnson really not listed on the depth chart but you know again Tony Hughes trying to get an eye and learn a lot of these players still as johnon gets another carry this time he's dropped stacked up a big there from T to Lele and I tell you although he got a lot of yards there he sure paid for it he got wrapped up low and T came over the top to finish him off he's going to be feeling that hit either later in the game or tomorrow low to LEL we mentioned one of the captains for this team a former walkon what a story of overcoming situations here as a rebel a walk- on he struggled through some injuries last season still started an all Mountain West performer is talele Ivy feeling pressure throws near side has his man and it's caught a nice catch by Deshawn McKenzie let's go down now to Shay with Ivy yeah guys in talking to Coach Hughes he said LZ Ivy talent and the size and the capability to be an all conference caliber player but he's had a lot of different systems and terminology in that brain of his this is his fourth offensive coordinator in four years and coach said when naming him the starter they wanted to instill that confidence in him early because this is a passionate fan base when he struggled last season he was booed so they want to make sure he feels comfortable and he can gain that confidence and when he F threw that first interception of the game guys I heard some booze in the stands so they want to keep that confidence up for Ivy well that's a great sign thanks sh a great sign of maturity that Ivy's able to overcome that I mean as Johnson is is wrapped up and a nice stop coming up for you and LV on the play so we'll bring up second down now and third down rather and seven and going back to Ivy for just a second there's no more scrutinized position in this game than the quarterback and and most of the game is mental if your mental game is off at all it's going to show on the field so fighting through diversity getting booed by your own fans at home struggling back and finding a way to get it done again a shaky start here your first attempt to interception but you shake it off that shows some mental toughness on his part shaking that off and coming back down leading a drive and and throwing some nice throws along the way for a touchdown pass Jackson State wants to go ahead and uh talk things over here on a crucial third down and seven here for the Tigers they want to make sure they get this right well the Seth Davis show is back for a brand new season this week's guest Clemson quarterback Deshawn Watson find out if the Heisman front runner really almost committed to Auburn over Clemson watch the entire exclusive interview after the game only on campus insiders.com Watson and those Tigers one of the many favorites to get back to the college football playoff here this season it's going to be a close one to watch there deshun was is definitely an exciting player to play to watch play he's uh he's going to have some some decisions to make about his future but we'll see what he does this year uh trying to lead Clemson back to the playoffs at the end of the postseason as a former quarterback who like to run the football a little bit yourself you like watching him play absolutely definitely the the the Dual threat that you're looking for out of the quarterback these days in college he's he's he's physical enough but smart enough at the same time already to know when to get down and not take that extra hit Ivy kind of reminds me a little of Dante c pepper a little bit kind of a big guy that can really push the pile as he drops back and throws over the middle pass there is caught and completed as it's romelo Shumake who gets his first catch Ryan Molina with the tackle and the stop shy of the first down and there you see Ivy showing composure staying in the pocket knowing I'm sure they talked about in the timeout but knowing that they're probably going to go for it on fourth down not having to shoot for it all and Miss but making it a fourth and management making this fourth down conversion a little bit more manageable taking the underneath play unob defense did a good job not giving up the Deep play keeping everything in front of him and securing The Tackle once the catch is made well the Tigers Caleb have been here before almost the exact same spot and same situation fourth down as ivy looks has time feels the pressure and throws and it's going to go out of bounds safe throw there and some great coverage by the rebels defense as they able to Circle and bring him down and apparently no intentional grounding on that so the unov rebels will come back on the field up 21 to7 here at s boy Stadium e e e well perhaps after year one the win total wasn't there like Tony Sanchez but wow the culture changed here at UNLV with football I mean everything from what you see behind the scenes with the team what you see on the TV screen on your on your tablet or on your mobile device or on your computer watching this game the the feel change with the Stardust look they really embrace the city of Las Vegas they're introducing two new helmets one of them here played tonight with a red helmet they're also going to have a blackout against Fresno State with a a black helmet as well so Tony Sanchez has done more than worry about x's and o's in the football field absolutely and the community is definitely getting behind him uh he's an enthusiastic person we talked about it earlier you go into his office and he's done but positive talking about the future the direction this program is going he's getting the kids to believe and and now this is this is what the product is all right Shay what do you have for us yeah guys I'm just going to comment on those helmets like you talked about this is the second year that they're wearing these red helmets but before that it was 30 plus years straight silver gray helmets that's it no color involved and as you mentioned Ray black helmets staying bue this year so they're really up in their uniform game here at UNLV they are and we had a chance to watch a a video yesterday in and Coach Sanchez's office fantastic they're going to build a brand new football facility next to the practice fields at and a lot of things going in a positive direction here at UNLV for football on first down Stanton's going to show his running ability gets across Midfield close to that first down marker you see there ston showing off his capability to run as you said again coming right down the pipeline there's a huge hole there made by Theo made by the old lineman and the misdirection Stanton not afraid to get in there and mix it up with those Defenders listen to these numbers 747 yards rushing for Stanton last year in Junior college football I mean he's no stranger to the ground game that's for sure you could see it in the eyeball test he's a big guy I think that's more as Lexi this is now Xavier Campbell with his second carry as he goes to the far sideline it looks like he's going to be a little bit short of the first down I think the 747 yards is more than the two returners for Jackson State combined last year that is that's saying something I mean this guy is not as strange he he threw the ball a lot as there's no doubt about that but he's definitely able to put it down Tuck it tuck it in and put his nose down and get some yards on the ground had a chance to watch the coaches show produce here locally in Las Vegas and they miked up Tony Sanchez they did tell him though in one practice you can hear Sanchez say this isn't Saddleback anymore they're going to hit you on that as uh tripped up there but I think still good enough maybe for the first down we'll have to check the spot is Campbell yeah we'll see the spot there and that that's that's the second of two running backs that that unov will feature uh Lexington Thomas as you saw earlier his capability and now Xavier they both have different running styles you see here trying to get going he's a bit more of a Bruiser just trips up over his own feet maybe still able to dive forward and get the yardage necessary but it just depends on where his arm came down the Lex and Tech show that's kind of what the Lex and X right yeah yeah that's that's what they've been called here it's a little bit of back in UC USC's Heyday with Reggie Bush and Lindell white they had the thunder and lightning you saw Lex he's got a little bit more wiggle to his Run game X is one of those running backs that gets North and South quick and he gets going Campbell gets going enough even despite being tripped up for the first down Campbell a 511 220 lb sophomore from belir Texas and Texas has been a nice steady stream of pipeline of talent over the last couple of years here to UNLV absolutely you had Tim cornette one of their their their great alltime running backs at UNLV who finished up in 2013 he was one of their featured backs out of Houston um a Devonte Davis a receiver out of Houston so Texas has been a feat for unlb so first down and a handoff up the mdle middle as Lexington Thomas back in the game Charles Williams in the game now actually number eight that freshman who was deep on one of the kick returns early in the game now he gets some of his first action as Tony Sanchez wants to check the depth and the rotation here at running back absolutely you might not need it this game but you want to see who you can trust with the ball who you can trust with in-game reps and that's what they're doing here with the young guy Stanton over the middle pass is caught Darren Woods Jr inside the 20 inside the 10 before he is finally dropped at the seven yd line by Brandon Maiden who's able to finally with the touchdown saving tackle here you see another little bit of play action and for a quarterback this is one of the easiest throws you got the play action sucking the linebackers a receiver dragging in behind and he's wide open that's a nice easy throw for a quarterback good game good run after catch nice on time and on target and good job fighting for extra yards there at the end Johnny Stan still perfect on the game five for five 130 yards in the two touchdown passes to Boyd and nearly had one there to Woods Jr who emerged last spring as one of the number one receivers in the wide receiving core here at UNLV so first down Stanton hands off up the middle that's Lexington Thomas back in now at tailback as he stopped at the three and those holes are starting to shrink a little bit and I think that's coming from Tony Hugh he talked to us earlier in the week about not wanting to give up the Run that's one of his mantras on defense is stopping the run you see there he's he's loading up the box he's going to he's not going to have any of those gaping holes that they were having earlier on in the game he's going to put a focus in on stopping the Run Cornelius Henderson B number 93 for Jackson State in on the tackle Tim Holt The Man in Motion behind Stant hand off to the second man through that's Thomas and he's in for his second score of the night Lexington Thomas a three yd touchdown and put six more on the board for the rebels there you saw the pressure the the Run was designed to hit up the middle but Jackson State's making an effort to clog it up in the middle Lexi to Thompson he's agile enough to stop on a dime bounce to the outside makes somebody Miss hurdle over his own guy and walk into the end zone this guy is showing some impressive Talent here early for unlb it's interesting Lexington Thomas they would say diminutive at 5'9 170 lb absolutely he's finding a way to get it done I think we C we talked earlier in the week to coach cotton about his running style he said he's not the biggest guy but he likes to mix it up in there in between the tackles you see he's more than capable at with his size and stature he's more than capable strong enough agile enough to make it happen in the inside and look at the scoring Drive nine plays 64 yds Thomas with his second score of the night and a 27-7 lead as we get one more look here and uh three touchdowns total for Lexington Thomas last year he's already got two tonight and that that is saying him that's a way to start off the year that shows that your offseason work that you've been doing with your strength coach that when the coaches aren't even around working hard on your craft getting better at this game educating yourself on the game and overall Improvement you see the fruits of that right now Lexington Thomas able to come up all right Shay what do you have for us hey guys remember Coach Hughes talked to us and he told us his biggest concern in this matchup was the big and physical offensive line that UNLV possesses he says it's a little bit of that SS versus f BS but he said that old line can become a dominant force in this one if his guys cannot move them off the line of scrimmage and I think as you guys mentioned you're starting to see some more holes for UNLV and it's that o line that's giving him those gaps they have certainly uh done that indeed Shay thanks very much xaven Bingham and jarus mole are deep for Jackson State as pantels kicks it away Jackson State has yet to have one come out of the end zone and this time it is going to be Bingham who's going to give it a shot across the 15 spun down there at the 16 yd line so the first kickoff return for the Tigers after having several touchbacks for Evan pantels George Carmona on the special team stop for the rebels and I think there you see a kickoff returner who's anxious to make his mark on the game he hesitated a little bit the ball was in the end zone he'd been Downing him touchbacks before but he wanted to make his impact on the game a little eager to get out little hesitation maybe they take a little bit of a hit for the field position but you got to like that as a coach somebody's eager to get out there and make a play well it's been a long first quarter here in Las Vegas and UNLV has put up 28 points on the board Jackson state with the seven as Ivy and what will most likely be the final play of the quarter rolls to his left and throws pass and the on the ground let's see it is going to be caught and complete as it's going to be grabbed by Daniel Williams and that indeed is going to be the final play of of the first quarter as Williams comes up with the grab UNLV in control of this one 27-7 Tony Sanchez putting the giving the keys of the offense to Johnny Stan and he's done nothing but impress 28-7 after one quarter in Vegas e e e back here in the lovely Las Vegas strip all lit up here in the September Sky SE September 1 as the season gets underway on a Thursday night here on the Mountain West Network on campus Insider as the pass from Ivy is caught and then finally driven back and I'll tell you the UNLV defense bringing that intensity hard knows that's what Tony Sanchez and Kent bear want and when you have Ivy in that Jackson State offense kind of in the shadow of their own End Zone you want to bring that pressure and heat absolutely you see there they're they're looking to get after it and I think Jackson State tried to take advantage of that by setting up a little slip screen but the running back was not able to make the catch a little bit of confusion there all Lan saw the ball on the ground he's thinking it's live ball I'm going to score a touchdown he Scoops it up but they ruled it an incomplete pass so it'll bring up third down and 12 another key third down opportunity here to convert for Jackson State and Ivy now in a throwing situation feels the pressure this one is going to go incomplete so now fourth down as it was Ali who was the intended receiver Carl Oly The Freshman from right there in Jackson as Ivy's pass goes incomplete and they'll have to punt it away as Tony Hughes gets his punting unit together special teams they'll come back out I think a positive for Coach Hughes so far in this game they haven't had a lot of functionality errors that things like lining up delay of games off sides that's one of the things that he mentioned he wanted to see out of his team get the fun of the game down not making any mental mistakes early Christian Jackman will punt it away and Brandon Presley steps away from it lets it take a balance and it takes the UNLV bounce inside the 40 near the 35 and that's where the rebels offense will come back out when we return with UNLV on top of Tony Hughes and Jackson State 28 to7 e e e well the equipment guys don't get a lot of credit publicly right but this is kind of how time is spent to start the season what they got to do about a 100 stickers on 100 different football helmets oh man and you know they got to be lined up perfect they got to be functional they got to look right and they've got three different helmets that they're going to be showing off this year so they just tripled their workload but the players are going to appreciate it they look real good on game day they look sharp and they got the and again talk about Tony Sanchez really embracing Las Vegas they got the Stardust sign on the back of the helmets that sticker as well is going downfield is Stanton and that ball Falls incomplete Tim Holt and Darren Woods Jr out there as well as Brandon Presley and with the first quarter in the books some of the numbers obviously in unlv's favor 215 total yards on quite a pace here and Johnny Stanton five for six just one incompletion for Stanton and I guess so much for shaking off any kind of rust or nerves in his first FBS start for UNLV absolutely your first incomplete pass coming in the second quarter you're well in control of this game right now I think that incomplete pass though was into some pretty tight coverage and I think coach cotton the offensive coordinator for the rebels talked about in our meetings that he wants to see some ball security not putting the ball in danger that's going to be one a Learning lesson while there's been a lot of highs in this game that's going to be something that he's going to be able to learn from not putting the ball in danger throwing it into coverage like that alexavier Campbell with the third carry of the night for him Stant now on Third and long will throw it to the right side it's got Devonte Boyd Wiggles free as he splits those Jackson State Defenders on the right side the nice grab and a first down and you watch there Devonte Boyd just has a great way of filling the openings you see there finding a quick Target being open when he's supposed to be open the quarterback's looking expect you to be there he's there Stanton doesn't have to hesitate at all you see Boyd there able to catch it wiggle through a couple Defenders trying to fight for extra yards he's just been a playmaker all around ever since he stepped on the field that's Rebel he was a Mountain West Freshman of the Year back in 2014 94 receiving yards seven scores a year ago already has two on the night tonight Campbell tries to cut back up the middle and and he is tripped up and stopped there by Jackson State Preston Hughes I think got a shoelace and dragged it down you see there the difference between the Lex and X show where Lexington Thomas is able to wiggle and make a way where there's no way find a hole Xavier Campbell is one of those type of Runners that needs to get that steam going behind him he's a bigger back he likes to get downhill North and South not so much wiggle in his game you see there if he gets tripped up before he gets going he's not as effective second down to nine Stanton will keep it himself quarterback run inside the five and the big guy finally stopped at the 2yd line but boy Stanton had a real head of steam and he almost made it to pay and I talked about Xavier Campbell being a big guy Johnny Stanton he's no small quarterback he's a big guy too get going north and south see there putting his foot in the ground cutting up field trying to finish the run off physically and that's one of those hits that you're as a offensive coordinat quarterback coach you're going to be saying hey you don't need to take too many hits like that all season I mean yeah get the yards but but not at at what cost you know he already had a big chunk but that's an impressive run there for Sten yeah Justin Json might be feeling that one tomorrow as Stant really lowered the shoulder instead of sliding he really tried to go through him here a whistle the line of scrimmage and uh Tony Hughes wants to to go over things here and and UNLV now in a position here to to add to the lead total as they're close to the goal line once again to build on this 28 to7 lead you know it's never too early for playoff projections who's in who's out who's ready to shake up the rankings joint campus insiders every Tuesday at 3:00 Eastern 2 p.m. central for our live broadcast inside the college football rankings powered by exence Bo the college football playoff this year everybody really looking forward to that again this season a lot of teams I know RP fek likes LSU a lot and why not if Leonard forette is healthy and can maintain 100% health I think a lot of people like the Tigers in Alabama a number of teams absolutely there's a number of teams at the top that have a chance and will have a bid at the end of the season if things go well for them Len Fett as you said he was in the Heisman front running for most of the season last year and uh we'll see if he's able to come back and repeat that type of success we talked about DeShaun Watson earlier him and him and the rest of that clemon offense is not going to go down quietly they're looking to repeat uh the national championship game and Alabama as always is always going to be in the conversation a lot of people like Oklahoma to do well Baker Mayfield is an exciting quarterback so Stanton lined up Mark phillipy behind him and then Campbell is The Tail Back Campbell gets the hand off puts his head down toward the end zone and he is just shy of the touchdown was a couple inches shy of that goal line is Xavier Campbell Deshawn Tilman coming in cut him short there you see chopping him down low getting the legs from under him football squirts out there at the end but I think they're going to rule it down now we haven't seen a whistle yet on a review so UNLV will step back up to the line Second down and goal driving up the middle as into the game now is David green and let's see the players for unlb Think Green is in but official's kind of breaking things up and it looks like he's going to be yeah I guess they are going to rule it a touchdown wow perhaps one of the longest touchdown calls absolutely David Green it took him a while he got he got stood up initially the officials let him keep fighting now you see here is for Progress pretty much stonewalled in the back field Ling there in the shuffle but officials let the play Roll On and he's able to roll his way into the end zone if they do send this to review good luck figuring out where he comes down so David Green who didn't get into the end zone last year has his first touchdown of the season one of the team captains here was voted by his teammates for UNLV and one of the many talented backs in the rotation here for the rebels as pantels extra point is is on its way and through UNLV continues to add to their lead up 35-7 as David Green Gets In For The First Time in 2016 rebels in control in the second e e Stadium where the rebels are up 35 to7 guys I have an injury update for you Evan austri number 17 he came out with a sux shoulder they reduced it AKA meaning they pushed it back into place uh he's got full motion and strength he'll play the rest of this half and then they're going to re-evaluate him at halftime this is something that he's done before so they want to double check and be sure that shoulder's okay back to you all right sh no sense to push it up 35 to7 run the risk tantel kicks it away Jackson State finally had their first kickoff return in the last attempt but goad downed here in the end zone is jerus mole actually it will be xaven Bingham who takes a knee in the end zone so lonz Ivy will bring the offense back out here one more time for Jackson State as this one beginning to slip away a little bit Yeah the last for the Tigers last few possessions on offense been kind of stonewalled haven't been able to move the ball like they were early and a little bit of that UNL be figuring them out figuring out what style of offense they are but if you're Jackson State you want to try to get back to some of those things you were doing those early down success plays that you were getting off the short yardage runs short yardage passes get back to that get your confidence back see what Ivy calls here as he rolls to his right on first down looking to throw takes a hit while it delivers the football it is caught so Ivy Under Pressure able to complete the pass to Daniel Williams we haven't called his name a lot tonight but you have to figure they've got to bebe Shadow him a little bit as the top playmaker here for Jackson State absolutely absolutely his name's going to be circled in the in the pregame at at all times for Jackson State you see they're trying to get him the ball in his face he had one man to make Miss wasn't able to do it that time but you see they're trying to get the playmaker the ball now pick up a three so second down and seven hand off here up the middle and good for a first down and a nice pickup here for Jackson State Jackson state is able to continue to move the football and pick up another first down as again the things that were working for him Terry Sullivan on the run and there they're going back to a little bit of that zone read concept get the little misdirection element in their offense try to get the Run game going Ivy looking up top deep and it's beyond the reach of Williams as Tory mctire trailing number 81 white and that's good coverage by Tory mcre I think Williams had a step on him Ivy put that a little bit too far out but the safe throw putting it out in front making sure that only his guy would be able to get it but I think Williams did have a step there if Ivy was able to put it on him so second down and 10 for the Tigers Jackson [Applause] State as we mentioned a lot of experience on that offensive line giv Ivy time as he's going to come near side this time man it is incomplete there as muton on the coverage of Javon Floyd and I think there's another opportunity for Jackson State to put the ball down the field the receivers are getting behind their man you see here Ivy has time in the pocket Stands Tall finds his man just shoots him a little bit too far up field receiver unable to make a play on it got a fingertip on it not able to he haul it in well it is kind of getting to that point where they do need to make some take some risks down field absolutely you don't want this game to get too far away from you you don't want the your your offense to stop believing that they can make plays downfield Ivy's pass Far Side intended for Williams MRE again on the coverage a nice job no flag there as there was some contact but mctire there not too early so he breaks it up and so now it will be Jackson State who will now have to punt it away yet again and I tell you Tory mctire is stepping up to the chall he knows he's guarding one of their Playmakers out there on the edges and they're not giving him much help he's by himself out there on the island manto man coverage really tight coverage every time he's been thrown to there's been a couple times where he let the guy get away from him but he's always there and there you see him being physical at the point of attack able to jar that bo ball loose Christian Jackman set to kick it away Brandon Presley deep foran LV standing at about his 21 yd line and a bad punt goes straight up and it's going to hit at about the 35 take another UNLV bounce it's going to be down and touched by the tigers at the 42 yd line and I tell you I don't know if there was a designed block call there but unav was dangerously close to blocking that one which would have been another big play for them special teams making an impact maybe had an effect on how that ball came out but all in all is a a great job for special teams kind of keeping the field position in un's favor they've not had bad field position to start a drive yet this game so here's another chance to start off with some good field position Charles Williams now in at tail back for UNLV Stanton still in at quarterback you have to see Kurt paland who finished second in that quarterback race ston throw to the left side Falls incomplete they're going to call that a backwards pass which which mean that's a negative play treat it like a fumble they're going to spot it where the ball was recovered so now Williams has it you know what to tell you the truth that's a good a heads up play by that young young running back to fall on that ball a lot of times people treat it as an incomplete pass and it ends up being a turnover good job there knowing where he was falling on it make sure they keep the possession good Awareness on the field this is Williams breaks free across Midfield makes up for the drop and the loss on the play with a huge run up the middle Justin emson finally able to catch up and bring the young freshman down there you see that that un offensive line with that new size able to make a hole and you see it wearing on these Defenders uh the defensive line is not going to like that heavyweight laying on them for too much longer as the game goes on you start to see these these runs that were five and sixy runs opening up and getting farther down field Williams again this time to the left side a stiff arm breaking a tackle to the 30 and another first down and you know Barney Cotton we're starting to see just in some early runs here from Williams he said that he believes this is going to be a very very special player when all has said done in his career at unlb absolutely and it's just another tool to add to the shed they've already got the Lex and X show adding him to the mix just gives you another option gives you more depth at running back to kind of keep your legs fresh throughout the season giving guys that you can trust the ball and letting them make plays for it Williams ran for 2100 yards and 28 touchdowns last year as a senior at Bullard High School in Fresno California now he lines up next to Stanton looking to his left side has his man and in for the touchdown his third of the night is Devonte Boyd and there at the line of scrimmage we saw Stanton checked the play that's showing that he's getting some confidence getting more comfortable in the offense a 30yd touchdown strike Johnny Stanton for the third time tonight to the preseason all Mountain West first team and Devonte [Applause] boy and saavan Bingham really didn't have much of a chance no we did we talked in the beginning about Boyd's capability and how constant he's been as a as a presence on un ob's offense he's just showing it here tonight every time he's been throwing the ball he's come down with it three times for a touchdown Stanton now 7even for eight for 180 yards in the third touchdown pass for him on the night as pantels is on for another extra point and we have have a penalty flag have a penalty flag on the field so we'll wa see here what the call is it's going to go against Jackson State so the extra point is going to be good so add to one point on as UNLV continues to build their lead Johnny Stanton looked like a veteran of this unlb offense to Devonte boy a third time e e the best plays from the biggest games every Saturday every week now the football season is here don't forget campus insiders is your One-Stop shop to rewind replay the best action of the day and we've had some good rewind candidates in this game so far a number of great runs not all of them have developed into touchdowns but the passing game of Johnny Stanton has been a highlight reel all and to itself with Devonte boy and if you are a coach at unlb you couldn't be more satisfied with the start that he's had because his confidence is going to be high now uh after the performance he's had this half unov has to be confident with their decision to go with him as a starter and he has to feel more capable than ever and Bingham mishandles the kick able to G gather it up at the 10 and it tries to come back with it really doesn't get very far stopped at the 16 so just the second kickoff return for Jackson State in this game tonight David Green making the tackle at that 16 yd line that's the first time that the ball didn't travel into the end zone for this unlb special teams I mean the field position battle is being won definitely but they've been able to put the ball in the end zone for touchbacks on more than enough of their kickoff attempts here so lont he has Ivy and the Tigers will come back out on the field trailing here in the second quarter 42-7 great Crawford here with Caleb Herring former Rebel great quarterback and Shay peper on the sideline for us as the pass is batted down the line of scrimmage by UNLV Jeremiah valonga Jeremiah has some some long arms up front he's not the biggest guy at defensive end as far as weight but he's got an impressive wingspan able to get his hands up there bat that pass down it's one of the most annoying things as a quarterback when you have a defensive lineman it's able to bat passes down and a whistle here and some movement let's see who they're going to get Jackson State pointing toward y's defensive line it's actually going to go against the Tigers we talked earlier had a ton of penalties in this game no no yeah absolutely Tony Hughes talked about it earlier they want to play clean they want to be one of those teams that comes out and doesn't make a lot of mental mistakes in halfway through the second quarter that's their first really procedural penalty so he's got to be happy with that but this couldn't have come at a worst time there backed up in their own near their own end zone so they want to go forward not backwards here so second down and 15 Ivy hands it off that's Bates as Joshua Bates is met by a number of UNL UNL players defensively mik Hughes among the gang of rebels to bring down baits a little bit of a misdirection draw play there trying to get the get the defense to move and open up holes on their own you and wasn't cool they were uh they were all filling their Gap stayed home kept contained and were able to bottle up and runner for no for minimal gain now third down and 13 I's passes tipped and nearly intercepted nearly picked off in a nice defensive play for UNLV as we have a flag and a penalty on the field see here pressure gets in might have been a little bit of a late hit there on the quarterback but that pass is almost intercepted and so the penalty goes against valo Anga for UNLV and a nice break here for Jackson State absolutely absolutely uh you want to get the ball moving any way he can and here the defense uh Jeremiah a little bit anxious to get after the quarterback he's so close to making a sack sometimes it's hard to pull off at the last minute he goes ahead and hits him and pays for it with a penalty so some new life here for the Tigers on the 15yd penalty the automatic first down ivy with time to throw pump fakes now comes near side and just beyond the reach of Benji Parish J miles on the coverage and I tell you between miles and mctyre there's been some really tight coverage on the perimeter at this cornerback position every time that Lon ivy goes to to throw a pass it's into tight coverage especially on the corners uh they're staying with the receivers if they're getting ball calls they're turning around and trying to find the ball cuz they're in great position making it tough for Ivy to find anything down the field [Applause] second and [Music] 10 Ivy's pitch back to Bates and he has hit and hit hard and a great play Here by UNLV as they're able to make make the stop EV an Austria coming up to make the tackle and Austria was was on the sideline earlier with the shoulder injury it looks like that shoulder's feeling fine there coming up and land the boom on the on the speed option play stopping it for a short game he's running on adrenaline doesn't doesn't feel the pain that work another Third Down The Long situation third and seven here for Jackson State Ivy looking to throw to the right side Bates has it and he's going to be stacked up as he have enough for the first down they're going to depend on the spot it might be close here Caleb he might have enough for the first down looks like they're going to wave the chains forward it looks like he put his nose down and fought for the yard as needed and that's a good job by Ivy there unov has done a good job taking away the downfield throws come down to where they're give you the check down let your running backs go get you the yardage you need there he trust the running back and the running back comes through for him thought Austria coming up to make another tackle able to keep Bates from getting the first down still though so we get a look at Tiger who is headed to the locker room Marcus cook one of the big offensive linemen 310 lb senior from Pritchard Alabama as it's Bates with another nice pick up on a nice run and he comes up just shy of another first down so here we are with Joshua Bates catching getting a nice gain and now he's trying to get a little bit of a flow as he'll run over to the sideline get a quick break and finding some success here on this drive figuring out a way to get the ball moving and this is what Tony H talked about about battling adversity staying with that drive and that will to get things done that's what they're trying to exemplify here tonight and the snap nearly goes over the head of Ivy but is able to Corral it and settle it down and he's able to hand it off and get it to Robert Johnson as Johnson able to move the football across the line and get another first down moving those chains so the tiger trying to find here a little bit of a rhythm as the clock winds down about 5 minutes remaining here in the second quarter Ivy this time will keep it himself goes to the far sideline maybe a pick up of a couple before he goes out of bounds and I tell you these these Snaps are getting a little high there might be a little bit of fatigue coming in with the center losing focus and it looks like Ivy's helmet came off there on the sideline so he's going to have to sit out of play as he he makes his way back to the sideline uh Jackson State's going to have to get their backup in on short notice here get this play off while while ABY has is it the mandatory One play after you helmet comes off here in college football well now we weren't really sure that the depth chart had the word or by the name of four different quarterbacks believe this so is's going to be jiren MOA I believe and there's a penalty flag penalty flag on the play flag [Applause] let's see who this is on actually Jordan Williams was in for that snap at quarterback see that's one of those those procedural penalties that happens in that one you had you know that's a little bit of a different situation had a quarterback jumping in there and a play where he didn't expect to be in re two receivers going in motion at the same time I think hes will have a little bit of understanding why that happened but that's only the second time that they've had a procedural issue um you got to be happy with that as at Tony Hugh but this puts them in a third and long situation they weren't able to get anything on that last down you think about calling time out there well that that's one of the things that's on the table I mean he's wind it down in the second half this could be your last Drive uh before you have to give the ball back to unov before halftime as you see here making a good play at the sideline get some yards out the catch one of the few times that the unbs have let a guy get yard after the catch but uh like you said a timeout is definitely an option when you're coming out when you got a Scramble Play like that here Ivy stepping up finding the the receiver underneath able to get a stiff arm that's Tim Huff that was avoided right there by Williams able to skimper down the left sideline and pick up some positive yards on the first down play So Daniel Williams able to go over the middle this easy target for Ivy and a first down and then some so first and 10 from the 19 Ivy looking to his right pass is incomplete tended for McKenzie here is miles on the coverage for UNLV miles the senior from Palmdale California played junior college football Le Pierce College he had an interception last year playing 11 games for the rebels you see here unov V's defense not afraid to go manto man across the board they're they're clamping down and closing the windows on this quarterback making them have to fit it into some tight spots so now second down iy looking around trying to find someone the pass is caught jarus mole on the grab and again another first down you know it's hard to believe wasn't long ago cleared the other end of the field there facing third down and 15 and here the Tigers have been able to capitalize a unfortunate 15yd penalty absolutely and this is why coaches harp so much on playing smart because that penalty a third and 15 that gets you off the field you're off a fiing you're not worried about this drive but now the drive stays alive and here they are in the Red Zone Ivy looking to the endzone and it's incomplete the incomplete just misses his man a little wide there I tell you the longer that the defensive line for unop stays on the field the easier and the more clean this pocket is getting for Jackson State those D linemen are are getting fatigued and not rushing as hard as they were early in the drive when they were hitting Ivy just as he threw um but that that offensive line is staying Stout keeping it clean for Ivy to find these receivers as they try to make space against that that tough defensive secondary for unov Troy hawthor good coverage time out of the field with 307 remaining UNLV with a commanding 42-7 lead here at San boy Stadium more to come from Los Vegas e e Tony Sanchez looking on boy you wouldn't tell by that look on his face his team was up 42 to7 a coach is always looking for things to improve aren't they never satisfied Never Satisfied Ivy throws near side passes caught by Johnson tripped up and he goes out of bounds Robert Johnson Robert Johnson out at the 12 Y Line bring up third down we leave we there you see Ivy trying to go to the check down in space this time you know's linebackers able to Corral it before he can get get going for a minimal gain brings up another third and long Ivy set to [Applause] go looking throwing the pass is caught it will bring up fourth down there that formation the receivers went stacked they had their their playmaker Williams on a mismatch in the in the inside of the offense and I think that's where Ivy wanted to go may have had a chance to squeeze it in there to him but didn't like what he saw there's no problem with that because you got points here in the Red Zone be safe with the ball don't turn it over you got three points at this point you just want to get something going three points is better than none so I think he weighed the risk and decided to just come down to the check down and make sure they get three points out of this drive [Applause] Jackman's 27 yd field goal attempt is on its way and good so three more on the board make it 42-1 let's go down to Shay yeah guys coming up at halftime we've got Jackson State coming out here and Jackson State comes to unlb as part of a three-year deal between the schools and the Las Vegas Convention and visitors Authority the sonic boom of the South or the Jackson State marching band is better known as they're nationally recognized it's one one of the biggest in the US they're all here along with their cheerleading team and dance squad over 350 people flew in for this they're going to have an extended halftime five extra minutes and not normal but UNLV the home team is going to go first and then Jackson State will follow so big performance tonight they performed last night at the community center here in town it was a soldout crowd thousands of people so looking forward to this halftime show yeah I know they've been they've really made the most of this trip out here I know in the hotel I saw some JSU fans kind of wandering around and uh they really kind of treated this like a bow trip ABS in some ways they the players were allowed to have some time on the Strip absolutely and that that's that's one of the the great things about these type of games you get a Jackson State team a lot of these guys have never been to Las Vegas before they're making their first trip out here able to come out and have a little fun experience the city uh there there is surprisingly a big Jackson State Community here in Las Vegas as well so going to the Pearson Community Center as we talked about earlier seeing that B was a good experience for a lot of the people here in Las Vegas Salazar kicks it away mctyre with a foot in his own End Zone brings it out and stopped at the 29 near the 30 yd line before he is finally brought down so a nice return here by Tory mctire Jamal Hawkins coming up to make the stop for the Tigers they also went to Hoover Dam absolutely one of the The Monuments of the country able to see one of those things so they're making the most of this trip like you said a lot of their family you see they they travel well their their families are here to support uh this this a pretty big deal for Jackson State a great opportunity for those young guys it is a little bit of a contrast from a lot of other coaches who just really try to place their team under lock and key when they're in a place like this Lexington Thomas that might be his first rush for a loss in this game tonight and that is none other than javancy Jones able to make his Mark finally on this game squeaking in there from his defensive end position and getting that play in the back field we talked about him earlier having the potential to be a an allconference player the potential to play on Sundays if he keeps improving there you see why he's able to get in the back field and disrupt that play before it gets going it was the first Rush of the second quarter and you saw the big play numbers put up by Stanton and boy you talk about the guy playing at the next level Devonte Boyd really has cut up the secondary for Jackson State almost at will in this game tonight absolutely and he's he's doing a great job of taking what they give him making the explosive plays when they're there and there you see again coming all the way from his defensive end position Devan Jones getting his nose in there making a play before that play gets going for a big gain brings up a third and kind of long here for yov we'll see how Stanton handles this situation he hasn't had many of them here tonight but we'll see how he can handle this third and long I don't know it it appeared Lexington Thomas might have come up limping just a little bit after that run getting up from the bottom of the pile he remains on the football field standing to the right of Stanton and it's Thomas who gets it stands up to one tackler spinning trying to break free and a group of Jackson State players finally able to Corral him and bring him down among them xaven Bingham and Preston Hughes on there as well as the clock will continue to run and that is going to be the final play here of quarter number two bringing the first half here in Las Vegas to a close and it has been all UNLV in this one as they take a commanding 42 to1 lead into the locker room the rebels looking for their first season opening win since 2009 and they're well on their way absolutely it couldn't be happier if you're Co Sanchez he's not going to be satisfied but you couldn't be happier with the start that your team put up they were safe with the ball made the plays when they needed to execute well I other than the one 15 yard penalty on defense it was a clean game all right let's go down to Shay with Tony Sanchez coach you said he wanted to create turnovers you did so in their first offensive series how would you give the defense how would you evaluate their performance so far well you know they came out and got that turnover which resulted in another score which is good but we gave up two real long drives I mean we gave up a long touchdown Drive I believe it was 15 or 16 plays and then at the end of the half we got a three and out we have a stupid penalty in there and they drive all the way down to kick a field goal so I tell you what they've done some good things but those two drives we got to clean that stuff up Johnny Stanton just doing work here in the first half I assume he's going to come out and be the starter in the second half I know you didn't want to disrupt his flow how's that flow going it's going pretty darn good I mean he's been on point he's done a great job he made some great checks that touchdown at the end with a check that he made done a good job of protecting the football so you know he's got a good half he's got to keep it up all right thanks coach thanks guys guys back to you shay thanks very much Tony Sanchez will run into the locker room where he'll talk things over with his team and his coaching staff UNLV coming out after a 3 and9 season a year ago so much optimism here for the rebels as Lexington Thomas Gets in for a couple of touchdowns Johnny Stanton showing some bravery in the nose for the goal line there in a commanding lead 4 210 here at the break e e e [Music] [Music] [Music] hope you enjoyed the first half action between Jackson State and UNLV we take a halftime pause in the action here from the campus Insider Studios to give you a taste of what's brewing on the new season of the Seth Davis show once again he has some prime time guests episode one features the Heisman candidate quarterback for the Clemson Tigers Deshawn Watson take a listen so when we last saw you uh you were playing for the national championship you guys came up a little bit short obviously had an amazing season being a Heisman finalist does it take a long time to get over the season ending in a loss like that or do you come away with sort of more appreciation that you got that far um it's both um you know I still thinking about it till today you know being that close from being a national champion and and being 15-0 um but also just from the experience and you know just really sitting down and thinking about you know there's 100 you know 20 something teams that were you know dreaming about planning that game and you know we were wanted to you know that that special group to be able to qualify and you know play for that Championship so you know we took a um you know tough loss and you know everyone's still thinking about it and have a chip on their shoulder but at the same time you know we took away you know a good experience and and we know what to do to get back there are you one of those guys who wants to watch the video of that game and break it down right away or do you not even want to look at it it and move on uh that's what I did you know the next day we got back watched it yeah and we went through it and painful uh yeah it was actually you know it very painful but at the same time you know it's always good to correct the mistakes and uh you know just you know the smallest plays could have been the biggest plays in that game and you know correct the mistake so that's what we did well we obviously had a terrific season uh being a Heisman finalist you came in third behind Derrick Henry the winner and Christian mcaffrey when you went to New York did you expect to win the trophy what were your expectations how disappointed were you when you didn't win um I want say I was very disappointed because I had an open mind going up there um you know I was just blessed enough and happy to be you know in that special group um you know it's hard to get up there um being the first you know Clemson student athlete to be able to you know attend the Heisman Ceremony um you know family never been in New York I never been in New York you never been there never been so that was the first time so you know I had open mind like hey when to lose I'm going tojoy experience Jo the trip you know create friends and and just meet everyone and um you know of course you know want to win but at the same time you know congrats to you know Derek and what Christian did also and you know I just enjoyed the whole you know weekend that's only a sample size the rest of the interview equally as fascinating check it out in its entirety now on campus insiders.com also just a few sleeps away more football and it's here on campus insiders this Saturday Air Force plays host abene their feet the sonic boom of the South the Jackson State University marching band entertaining the thousands here at s Boyd Stadium halftime continues in a moment e e e e this exciting is perhaps hitting a jackpot on the Las Vegas Strip UNLV has hit the jackpot offensively here at least in the first half 42 to10 is our score welcome back here to San Boyd Stadium Ray Crawford along with former Rebels quarterback Caleb paing Shay peer's been providing the report to the sidelines she spoke with Tony Sanchez in the first half despite that big lead he's still looking for some improvement was completely happy with the effort absolutely as a coach you're never going to be satisfied but he has to be happy with the lead that he has and some of the things that he saw in that first half from his young starting quarterback and from his receivers and Playmakers out there on the edges well there was some question potentially how Johnny Stant would start in this game he hasn't thrown a pass in the FBS level and completed one and he started out pretty well first pass and the first catch to Devonte boy absolutely this is the best way to start a game and your career as a rebel first pass going about 50 yards for a touchdown going to your playmaker early and often is he here again going back to the well why not Devonte Boyd able to take place of the house soon as he gets his hands on the ball he does the rest he's getting into the end zone making his quarterback look good that made it that was a 32 yd touchdown strike the second of the game to make it 14- nothing then Jackson State tried to show some life after throwing an interception able to make a nice drive here as teevin Garrett gets the pass from lonz Ivy that cut the lead in half to 14-7 then Lexington Thomas boy impressive right down the gut and yov up front has done a great job with that at added size this year opening holes up for their talented running backs finishing down in the red zone and getting the yardage when it's dirty David Green he's able to get in as well one of the captains here for the UNLV Rebels this year that made it 35 to7 they tacked on some more a field goal for Jackson State with under 2 minutes to go gives us our score of 4 2 to 10 as you look at these stats here Caleb I mean they're very impressive tilted in the rebels favor but what stands out to you the most I'd say the rushing yards unov talked earlier in the week about last year's rushan game not being able to find any way to move the line at the point of attack and get going downhill this game shows that they've made some improvements in the rushing game the passing games is going to be there the rushing game has definitely come a long way and that's the biggest standout today for the rebels and Quarterback Johnny Stanton seven of eight just one incompletion 180 yards throwing for him and three touchdowns and one of two on the night so far to Devonte Boyd 4210 is our scored halftime e e e look off in the distance Stratosphere on the Las Vegas Strip UNL on top 42-10 and this one looking for their first season opening victory since 2009 it's also their first time they've opened the season at home since 2012 get a look at Johnny Stanton Tony Sanchez in the background Stanton there in the foreground getting his warm-ups gives a thumbs up he's good to go so it would appear that he is going to start here the third quarter absolutely and Coach Sanchez this game is probably in hand they probably can get out of here with a win regardless of who goes in at quarterback but these are quality reps going forward it's good to get game time reps you've been going through fall Camp reps against your own team so this in-game repetition is going to be good for him and the chemistry of the offense going forward in the season yeah I mean it is interesting I mean you've got Kurt paland and you're in a position now where a lot of times if you had an established quarterback you might think about getting in your backup for some reps because there are many many instances throughout the season where there's going to be a need an injury you know Blake Decker's history here in recent years with his injuries and paland deck had it step in last year and play 11 games so you know that most likely the chances are eventually you're going to have to use your backup quarterback but again on the flip side of that you've got a guy that has not played at this level getting his first reps and it's important to get that game experience especially want to bank that experience hoping to contend in the mountain Wester right and the luxury of the Rebel situation is talend's been that guy before the the second guy to fill in the starting role when the first guy goes down so he he they have some confidence in him with with what's going on with that situation so pantels kick goes out of the end zone let's go down to Shay to start this third quarter shay hey guys hey guys I talked to hey guys I talked toach coming out of the locker room and I asked him what he told his team at half and he said just fun with this one guys let's go out there and play like the score is he said this game will not determine the rest of our season I asked him how he thought his quarterback play was in the first half he said he thought the quarterback played extremely well he thought the offense played well what he was disappointed with though was the defense he said we didn't tackle and you can't win football games if you don't tackle guys all right Shay thanks very much Tony Hughes getting a good look on the sideline and hopefully seeing what he can see from a new quarterback now in the game for Jackson State his first pass is completed to The Far Side that's going to be Daniel Williams gets his first grab of this third quarter it's going to be Jordan Williams in that quarterback number 18 we've been talking about UNLV potentially making a switch at quarterback but it looks like Jackson State's going to be the first to pull the trigger get their second Stringer some reps here in the game see what they're going to do here if anything changes with their game plan so Williams now on second down and a handoff up the middle and perhaps a gain of a yard there so it's going to bring up third down and long so Williams is going to be faced with his first third downal situation coming in for Lam martiz Ivy you see ivy on the sideline I I mean I don't think that the way this game was has been going was completely on him I'm sure there's some positive things that he's done things that he'll be able to learn from I think this is more about getting this guy some reps this young guy who may be the future of the program some in-game reps at this level iar might be a little sorry had 30 pass attempts in that first half flag on the play as Williams is chased out of bounds see there everything covered downfield Williams just takes his losses and gets what he can on the ground we'll see what this penalty was heree confer I think they're wanting to get a a number penalty goes against the Tigers and declined by UNLV so fourth down they'll come out and punt it away as Williams will Trot over to the sideline so his first drive at quarterback for Jackson State Falls up comes up short Christian Jackman has been busy tonight in some ways although they've gone forward on fourth down a couple of times tonight Brandon Presley deep in this situation the smart move here to to try to switch the field position and a good punt finally presy takes a chance and feels it he's going to lose more yards in Gams here he's going to be spun down at the 18 what's interesting it looks like he took a step up he kind of misjudged it instead of taking a step backward then he had to kind of run back and recover Daniel Williams able to chase him down and make the C tackle spins him down as at the 18 there there he's just going off a pass experience these punts have been kind of short from Jackson State so he stepped up thinking it's going to be more the same this time jackon say gets a good punt off flips the field position a little here you know he will have about 80 yards to drive if they're looking to score again Johnny Stanton in the game maintains his spot at quarterback for UNLV Lexington Thomas in the back field Stanton's pass incomplete just this the second incompletion intended for Darren Woods Jr a red shirt freshman from Missouri City Texas is Woods there's a ball that I'm sure Stanton's going to be kicking himself about because he had an open man in the middle and instead of throwing the ball in there stepping through the throw finishing it he tried to touch pass it tried to place it there and didn't follow through with his arm we know he has a strong arm there's just a case where he didn't use it to his full potential Yeah Boy asked earlier this week how strong is arm very strong Lexington Thomas spun down and near the line of scrimmage he's dropped kind of an uncharacteristic stop and is that just his jog as gate or it looks like he's a little limping just a little bit cornelus cers it does look like a little hobble to a step I'm not sure if like you said that's his natural stride if he just favors one foot over the other but he does look a little gimpy not able to spin out of that tackle we'll we'll monitor that as the game goes on so now third down along a real test here for Stanton pressure comes from the edge pass he's able to get rid of it and it is caught M Stevenson or maai Stevenson excuse me with his first catch Dario Robinson makes the stop Stevenson a true freshman from Helix High School in Lemongrove California three star recruit out of high school 36 catches 775 yards in his senior year of high school and 10 touchdowns I tell you what coach Sanchez will not be happy at all about coming out of the locker room with a three and out like that if you're un obb there's no way that you can go from being so dominant in the first half to a three and out on your first possession that's just not not acceptable and I'm sure he's going to be talking to his team about that on the sideline pantels punt rolls out of Bounds at the 24 yd line UNLV up 42-10 Jackson State takes the field e e Tony Sanchez with the headset on on the sidelines as uh you take a look at the preseason poll in the west he's very optimistic about his team the voters in the polls though not quite as much having them finish in the division just ahead of Hawaii why is there predicted finish can I tell you the unov team will probably use that as motivation to to get this team fired up to say hey they're not showing us respect let's go out there and earn it they're definitely trying to earn it here in week one we'll see what they do on conference play once that rolls around oh the defense uh doing a good job for UNLV aren't they Shay well not so much guys I heard the coaches over here talking to the defense and just saying you got to finish plays things like that cannot happen again and they don't want to go three and out like they just just did yeah they definitely want to keep the pressure on especially with this commanding lead you don't want to get complacent you just don't want to kind of chalk it up as a w even though the score indicates as such absolutely coach Sanchez talked a little bit about that being the kind of adversity that they can face not necessarily being down all the time but when things are going right do you stay focused do you stay locked into your assignment do you give up on low plays and let things happen where the other team might be able to get some life and you see here uh Ivy's going to check back quarterback back so maybe Jackson State didn't like what they saw out of their backup quarterback they're going to let Ivy finish the game out it looks like so Ivy back out there on third down and long third six to be exact and after some of those defensive members got chewed out after that last Drive they want to make a good third down stop here Tory mctire on the coverage breaks up the pass play and a nice job no Flags there so bring up fourth down so the defense able to get off the field AB absolutely and I tell you unov has done a great job in man-to-man coverage their Corners out on the edges have been challenged they're going to go after him in one-on-one coverages you see here no safety help Tory mtir is by itself he's able to stay glued to the receiver get his hands in between the receiver's hands and break up that pass in complete play brings up fourth down mctyre has been on that assignment covering Daniel Williams quite a bit in this game tonight tough nose big hitter Brandon Presley again deep comes in has to go back again to make the catch the fair grab so I don't know maybe if it's the lights or or what it is but Presley able to able to hold on and get the fair catch so the offense will come back out on the field for UNLV in a moment e e e the lights look glorious here in Las Vegas Caleb Herring you played your collegiate career here set passing records here at UNLV you've made Las Vegas your home right absolutely you know I I settled down in my college town and it's been nothing but nice to me so can't complain about it the Heat's a little bit extreme but other than that Vegas has been a nice home a lot of folks on the Strip as you might imagine busy time of the year as Williams the ball carrier for UNLV young freshman from Fresno with another pickup he's going to be just short of a first down but I'm sure after that last possession the Uno offense had an earful from their coordinators and their head coach about finishing the game now they're going to have to come out and see if they can put something together here on their second Drive of the half you get a look at my partner's numbers over an illustrious career here at UNLV helping lead the rebels to their most recent bold appearance at the Heart of Dallas Bowl that had to be a great experience for you and a nice way to kind of cap cap a career and help the program turn a corner at that point absolutely absolutely you know there was hard times there for unov throughout my career as we have a penalty on unov but there were some hard times some ups and downs definitely thankfully I stuck with it and was able to see some of the good times with this program I think a bowl game a bowl experience is something that every player should should want to experience and should get to experience as a Collegiate player something that that you'll take with you for the rest of your life and those those bonds and those friendships that you made uh they're definitely going to last a long time so I'm I'm I'm better for the for the experience and I'm glad I got to go through it well we know we appreciate your Insight being on this end of it up here in the booth watch the game as Stanton's pass is complete that one is caught and I believe that might be the first grab for Andrew price Andrew price a big Target coming up there price the tight end a contributor a year ago as well shay hey guys I just talked to the trainer Lexington Thomas is fine he said he does kind of have a gimpy walk and he also said he doesn't think these starters are going to stay in very much longer so you're going to start seeing some of these backups and guys in the two deep come out here soon all right Shay thanks very much as uh one of those on the two deep Charles Williams out there at tailback nice run for him to the right side comes a bu shy of the first down you see here the offensive coordinator for the rebels coach cotton getting a chance to kind of open up the Playbook you saw in the first half a lot of downhill runs trying to get established a line of scrimmage coach Cott in this quarter looks like he's trying to open up get some reps with the rest of his Playbook a little bit more outside hitting on the edge runs as opposed to coming right down the middle another chance for Williams burst up the middle first down and more spinning free at the 30 still on his feet as Williams finally knocked out of Bounds at the 18 and I tell you for a guy who just played High School football about 8 nine months ago he looks pretty good out there yeah not too much of an adjustment period you see here getting the ball in the outside Zone stretch play foot putting his foot in the ground cutting up field not wasting time the vision to cut all the way back across the field and this is what I like from a lot of those young players not only the ball security but wanting to finish runs they're not running away from contact you see a lot of young guys in college it takes a while to get acclimated to the big hits that come these guys are fighting through contact and fighting for extra yards and a great example of that ball security Barney Cotton that's been a emphasis as Williams goes again Dives ahead and hangs on to it that's something that cotton said is discouraging the Running Backs from trying to some guys might reach out right in that situation for the first down marker right and and really make the football vulnerable they want these guys to hang on to it not do absolutely they're from the school of thought if you didn't get it on your on your legs don't try to reach it out with your arms keep the ball secure don't create turnover situations all right let's go down to Shay guys talking about that ball security I'm told if a player from FS the ball during practice on UNLV they have to do laps with a ball in their hand this is something the previous coaching staff did as well Caleb I'm sure you can attest to that and it's something that has worked they've only lost four fumbles last year three the previous year an average of only five lost fumbles since 2010 so ball protection a big point of emphasis guys and it's working it has worked I mean that that's that's huge absolutely and all these backs have been doing a good job hanging on to the football tonight David Green you get a look at Tony Sanchez on the right that's Barney Cotton the longtime Nebraska assistant came for the Corn Huskers to join Sanchez's staff a year ago Stanton loses the football a fumble on the snap there's a fight for down I hope we didn't Jinx UNLV here on the fumbles I think we might have oh my goodness Jackson State gets the turnover Preston Hughes gets a hand on and strips it apparently or Dives on and recovers he recovers it looks like some problem with the exchange there I know we talked about carrying the ball but the quarterback Center exchange is another place where the ball is made vulnerable you see there the ball squirts out where it's not even in the middle of the pile it squirts out to the side there nobody else knows where it's at but Jackson State able to come up with it and there you go that's another area where unov says you know the ball security might be an issue they're primarily shotgun offense when they come under Center that quarterback exchange it has to be thoughtless there hasn't there can't be any thought to it and we talked about earlier that's a situation whereas as Shay said that's a situation where they're taking that jog of Shame after you fumble the ball jogging around with the with the ball in hand and making sure that everybody knows hey I fumbled the ball this is unacceptable that's going to be something that they're going to talk about at nauseum uh next week in practice Al so now Jackson State's offense comes back on the field and the first turnover of the night and of the season for UNLV and things have been going gone almost flawlessly to that point absolutely an impressive drive for the second half coming out getting down into the Red Zone just not able to put it in and a turnover cost you points I the hand off and D the back is Bates and even know be defense wants a safety I think they're going to call forward progress boy did they finish that play off I I mean as a defensive coordinator you love seeing all 11 guys flying into the ball yeah you get the initial stop in the back back field but look at the rest of the red shirts trying to get on the action flying in making hits finishing guys off making sure that the the offensive player is falling backwards that time the forward progress saves the safety but unob has got to be happy with that kind of effort on defense Jeremiah valonga among those Rebels on the stop IV's pass near side falls short incomplete intended there for Javon Floyd 636 to go in the third quarter it's really been all UNLV although Jackson State trailing 14 nothing in that first quarter they did come down and score a touchdown after throwing an interception to cut the lead to seven and it's really that's the closest they've been able to get yeah that's right they they had some impressive drives that one being one of them to to to cut that lead in half early in the game they've had some spots where Tony Hughes is going to say hey we we did some good things but it hasn't been consistent enough to keep them in this ball game and you see here they're struggling backed up in their own End Zone got to look at Tony Hayes is or Hughes rather as Ivy rolls to his right and broken up incomplete and it's Dalton Baker who gets a hand in on a great story for the young player from right here who played for Tony Sanchez at Bishop Gorman and that is a special thing Tony Sanchez talked about it there's there's a a small window of players that you'll have a chance to coach at high school and then be able to be a part of their division one collegiate career Dalton is one of those players that coach Sanchez was able to coach at Gorman and now be an impact on his life here at unov coming up big on a third and long with an effort play really breaking up that pass that looked like it might be complete for a first down Jackman punts it away it's going to fall at the feet Presley and and come to a stop and settle at the 36 yd line so the UNLV defense helps out the offense a little bit after the turnover from the rebels offense they'll try it again when we return e e 4210 the score here at s boy stadium and guys we were talking about that Bishop Gorman connection between Tony Sanchez and his players and five players on this roster from Tony Sanchez's former stomping ground the PowerHouse you know that is Bishop Gorman High School one of those is offensive lineman Zach singer he was not recruited to play at UNLV though when and started at Kent State then transferred to UNLV when he heard coach Sanchez got the job and how about fullback mark philippy okay he came over under the previous coaching staff he tore his knee up so he couldn't play last season with his former coach and this game is the first time these two are kind of back together since philippy was in high school so they were both really looking forward to this season to this game and also really a side note on philippy his father is the former strength coach here at UNLV and was named America's strongest man in 1997 strongest man how do you even get that title well you've got to be able to lift a lot of those what those stones and yeah well there's a lot of stuff going on and pull yeah pull vehicles and I don't think you do that with your teeth though that's something else you just pulled your legs and arms Stanton goes on the run after the Charles Williams fumble so they got a away we're able to recover for a loss and now Stanton tries to get some positive yardage there in the run and I tell you has looked a little shaky here in the second half this is not a design quarterback run it ends up being a broken play a Miss block his time you see there Stanton not afraid to take some contact like I said earlier as a quarterback you got to pick and choose your battles he's able to deliver some punishment but sometimes it might just be best to preserve your body go down take the slide live to fight another day because you never know with those kind of hits and you you know just as well defenses kind of w they kind of watered the mouth a little bit once absolutely absolutely once a quarterback passes that line of scrimmage in your free ring exactly when you're in the pocket the D lineman are all licking their chops they're trying to fight and battle and that's why you get so many late hits on quarterbacks they just want to hit the quarterback so bad so you triple that when you cross the line of scrimmage now you got linebackers and DBS all licking their chops trying to get after you so it's a whole different element once you cross that line of scrimmage as quarterback Stanton one of the top 15 dual threat quarterbacks coming out of high school also participated in that exclusive Elite 11 Quarterback Camp in those competitions this is Charles Williams after the fumble has a Blocker in front of him for the end zone as the end touchdown Charles Williams his first as a rebble and there you saw again Johnny Stanton showing his confidence in the offense showing how comfortable he is in the offense comes up to the line and checks out of a play and the results is a touchdown that means that shows that he knows what he's doing you see here switching the play the overload to one side he switches it makes it a weak Side Run that's Mark philippy out there leading the way for his running back to dive over and make the exceptional play to get him for a touchdown and what they hope will be the first of many trips to the end zone here over the next three or four years from Charles Williams these are quality Reps for him I mean they've got a two-headed monster already with the Lex and X show now if they find this third body to rotate in it looks good with the running back situation for unov extra point is good Charles Williams the young rookie getting congratulations on the sidelines Williams out of the back field hangs on to it Philip he helps lead him into the end zone e well sometimes you might have second thoughts about what did I sign up for again doing a push-up for every point on the board 49 of them now oh man got add up and the more you scores the more they'll be doing so by the end of the night those guys will be really ripped up and probably popping out of those t-shirts a little bit 17 yd run for Charles Williams it's been a fantastic night in the running game he did have the fumble a little while ago uh that Johnny Stanton was able to recover but you know credit to Tony Sanz put him back out on the field right I mean you take a you want to not damage a a Young Guy's psyche and confidence it's a balance between making a mistake and you've lost your chance that's exactly right but keeping a guy confident as the kick from pantels goes out of the back of the end zone for yet another Touchback I think what you do there like you said it's a good job to keep the players confidence going he's a young guy he's got to make mistakes you got to let him learn from those mistakes give him a chance to learn from them now if if fumbling becomes a problem and you see it as a haveit in practice he comes out a couple more times in games and he's fumbling the ball again then at that point you got to start limitting minutes but here he's getting his first ingame R he's really just just getting his feet wet as a Collegiate player some of these things are just growing pains they're going to happen and Coach Sanchez doing a good job managing it and making sure that his players learn from these situations that kick was actually from Nikolai borin so Pentel and bour and both with touchbacks as Williams Goes On The Run slides just beyond the 30 yd line say will down him at the 30 so a pick up of five as Jordan Williams back in at quarterback for the Tigers trailing 49 to1 clock ticking under four minutes to go here in quarter number three it's been an offensive showcase here for UNLV and what I know Rebels fans watching wherever you may be are hoping to see more of this season and as the progression of what Tony Sanchez is trying to do with this program taken in positive direction balls on the field scooped up and is it going to be returned all the way for the touchdown it is touchdown UNLV as they're able to force the turnover and the fumble a scoop and score and it's going to be Jeremiah no yes uh it's going to be see Hughes Jr Mike Hughes there in the [Applause] congratulations and what a play defensively for Nick de the dash that's that's just a that's just a fortunate play there it looks like the Zone read quarterback stumbles loses his balance look at the big guy scooping score fighting off some tackles reach out the ball a little bit which which I'm sure he's going to hear about from his coaching staff but he's he rumbles his way down into the end zone puts some points on the board and we got I believe it's Jordan Williams the the Jackson State tiger Who's down right now took maybe a shot in the aftermath of that play you see here he doesn't have his boun from the beginning loses the ball leaves it right on the ground actually gets landed on there s between the ground he's not as heavy as as L montiz Ivy is so he doesn't have the weight to kind of cushion those kind of those kind of blows he saw earlier in the driveing he made a business decision and and slid down on the on the edges there running so he's not really built for that kind of contact just gets landed on and you hate to see somebody go down like that look Williams sitting up which is certainly good sign but carefully to his feet he's clearly clearly injured and in some pain coming off the field that's one of those things where the training staff at Jack and Stage is going to take every precaution where he was landed on that rib area the rib cage it's it's definitely a dangerous thing you get one of those ribs to have Haven forbid puncture a lung or something serious like that that's something you got to take precaution with standing them up and walking them and you see they're walking them gingerly to the sideline you got to take every precaution with with injuries like that here's to dasan and another look Williams loses it on the ground to dasan Scoops and scores and tells on for the extra point on its way and good so put one more on the board for the home team 56-10 now a 46 Point Advantage here for unlb with 329 remaining in quarter number three Stanton defense as well as we get a look at D Das with a 28 yd fumble return for the touchdown well Hereafter in Las Vegas Shay and I will board a flight for Colorado Springs tomorrow Saturday on campus insiders Joan Shay and I as well as Darius Walker for more as we have Air Force football when the Falcons take on Abaline Christian for their season opener kickoff schedule for 2:00 Eastern 1:00 Central a game only to be seen on campus insiders.com it's a challenge for Shay and I getting prepared for 14 teams two games this week Jump Right In feet first Nikolai bour and Dawn for another kickoff attempt he was there last time as well the UNLV offense you talk about balance 429 total yards 212 Rush 217 in the passing game this one's going to go for a Touchback as well as Bon and pantels that I think we're seeing the fruits maybe of of that battle Yeah that competition is Def brought the best out of him it's kind of iron sharpening iron type of thing here they both brought the best out of each other all of these kicks are going into the end zone both guys band put that one out of the back of the end zone but there hasn't been any opportunities for Jackson State special teams to make an impact on this game you know there's three phases offense defense and the kicking game sometimes when things aren't going right a team will look for a big play from the Special Teams unit these kickers for un haven't given them a chance to do that Al Tony Hughes we asked him you know what was it what have you learned different I mean what hasn't he seen in 30 some years of coaching and now you make a change to a head coach he said it's kind of like the scene in Pat and we're driving that jeep through all those landmines not sure which one's going to explode or which one you're going to roll on right he he's walking through the Minefield here this is one of those tests this is one of those Minds playing up into an FBS School seeing how your team's does this can destroy a team's confidence as a head coach you have to monitor and manage all these personalities make sure everybody's respons responding the right way to this adversity and make sure they don't lose the season in this first game there's there's plenty of games to be played after this and you got to keep their spirits up this is one of those Minds for sure now Brent ly now in at quarterback for Jackson State and to give to Joshua Bates charges ahead for a couple brings up second down and eight I tell you one of the things that un know's defense is going to have to sew up here in the coming weeks is that the Zone read concept I think Jackson State's finding some success with a little bit of the misdirection element of this Zone read uh unov assignment defense is going to have to come through when when they're facing teams that like to do this Zone read offense as their main their main yardage game ly backs off into the shotgun second down and eight it's intercepted Tory mctire inside the 10 mcre will take it to the house in the distance for the touchdown Tor mctire on a pick six a 40 yd interception return for a touchdown and boy Tory mcre has been all over the place as far as man-to-man matchups and locking down his receiver but there you see he floats around gets lost in coverage and comes up and undercuts this out route as you see Jackson state has a pretty good concept quarterback thinks he has a man open but there's Tor mctire making a great catch you see Defenders not all of them are just ston hands some of them can make a catch toor mcre show some good hands there and some good good knowledge of the space cutting back and getting into the end zone and a great play by mctyre he had one interception a year ago and a great start for him here in 2016 andel's extra point is good so make it 6310 now UNLV with a commanding lead with 214 left here in quarter number three as Tony Sanchez now can really get a look and perhaps starting to think about resting some guys absolutely as the game wears on get some going down the depth chart a little bit right as the game wears on you see again the replay of the interception for the touchdown but as the game goes on it's not it starts to become less about the Reps that you're getting and more about preserving yourself for the future I mean there's there's injuries that are going to happen and God forbid anything happens to one of your starters so you'll start to see him kind of let off the gas a little bit here get a little bit more conservative with the play calling maybe and you'll definitely start to see the starters come off the field uh at one by one maybe if not the whole unit well tremendous sports information staff here at UNLV and according to these notes this is the first time UNLV has scored 63 points since 1976 so 40 years it's been since a Rebels team has put 63 points on the scoreboard and that's huge I mean this is that's one of the things things that Tony Sanchez will definitely use as bulletin board material that they're doing something special here at yov they're they're they're putting up points in bunches and that's something that these fans and these players and this community hasn't seen from their football team I know there there's a there's a lot of things that are going into this but when you see the results like this there there's no question that it motivates your team to keep coming back and and want to get more 63 points scored against Nebraska Omaha back in October 16 1976 that was a home game they had 80 last year against Idaho state so a lot of offense that's for sure well it is Vegas I guess it's it's a Showtime on Turf I guess for the rebels now you got it the offense continues to to be impressive defense impressive as well see here you got some of the starters still on the field for the defense but there's trickling in some of the the reserve players now as they gobble up that play in the back field for No Gain we start to look at some of the numbers here Jackson State started out one of two on third down conversions now they're four of 12 so coach bear is probably going to like the Improv movement steady Improvement on third down one of the best fourth down teams last year Jackson stayed one of two in that department we've seen them go forward on Fourth Downs on two occasions in this game tonight Williams Johnson rather coming near side and a flag on the play after a pickup it's going to be interesting about five yards see what this call is looks like you got a hold of the face mask personal foul going against Robert Jackson there for UNLV also a junior college product from the College of the SE seoa orig from Fort Meyer as a junior transfer played 17 games over the course of his career 71 tackles Jackson State struggling here in the second half with just 24 yards UNLV doesn't seem to make a difference who is in Personnel wise on offense they just continue to pile on the yards and pile on the points as the defense even getting into the scoring act a scoop and score on a fumble and an interception return by Tory mctire for a score as well again the Zone read concept giving unov some problems there wild able to keep it and come near side knocked out of Bounds at about Midfield this is a team Jackson state is that that's trying to find their identity and they got a new staff new offense and new new terminology and everything that's going on that's so new Tony Sanchez told us that he can relate to that situation he was in that same situation last year and uh so Tony Hughes in this offense is kind of trying to find their identity I think so far you can see that one of the things that they're going to probably make a staple this season is that zone re concept as they're going play action off of that same action in the back field and finding some success with it here late in the [Music] game W's pass complete to Tevin Garrett Garrett with the only touchdown catch for Jackson State in this game looks like a flag down on the far side so they'll move this one back for the Tigers and I think that that penalty is the result of a play that has a run pass option we used to do this a lot back when I was here at unlb where the call in the huddle is his own read play so there's guys out there that are thinking it's a run play but one of the receivers often has a a pass option where if the quarterback sees something he likes out there he can go ahead and take the easy short throw sometimes guys just get a little bit too far down field before the pass is out and they get that an eligible man downfield that's one of those things that comes with repetition they'll get better at understanding how far they can go ly scrambling to his left going deep down field has a man out there Kenzie can't haul it in just beyond his reach passes Falls incomplete and that was a good job there keeping the Play Alive didn't have anything there initially he's able to keep the Play Alive with his feet kept his eyes down field had a man downfield just couldn't connect a little bit out of the reach looks like he had a chance but just couldn't bring it in quarter number three is in the books here in Las Vegas Tony Sanchez's team getting some great play on offense Devonte Boyd with a couple of touchdowns Charles Williams gets in as well and they're in command e e e over Trump Tower and the Las Vegas trip on the other side all lit up as we turn the calendar to September it's been north of 100° here in Las Vegas this week Williams going downfield pass incomplete but a flag comes in looks like going to be pass interance there defaming a little early try to break up that play he's in position but just a little early it's like Robert Jackson was on the coverage and indeed that's who it is Jackson hit with the penalty to get another look definitely comes in early there wraps his hands all the way around as an official you're kind of forced there to throw the flag but it's interesting sitting down with Kent bear the defensive coordinator talking about the defense and discussed with us a study that the Mountain West has done you get plus two in the turnovers you win 90% of your games plus three 100% they are not only not only they won the turnover battle so far tonight but to be able to get points out of it too two of the turnovers were direct defensive points where they got into the end zone with the ball so if if this was conference play unov is definitely in that 100% group with the turnover ratio and through three quarters you see the numbers there on the screen turnover battle there 3 to1 that is the 100% ratio that we're talking about in conference play so if they can just continue the the way they're playing with the the ball Security on offense and and going after it strip sacks making plays on the ball in the air on defense that kind of thing will lead to good things in conference play Jackson State moving the football ahead to gain the first down Kent bear lot of experience Stanford Colorado San Jose State and interesting story about Ryan Molen how right melan was a walk- on at San Jose State and ended up finding his way here to unv and and reunited kind of with Coach bear and it's interesting sitting down with some of these coaches that are that are well traveled throughout college football and hearing some of the stories they have with uh with with the previous teams that they've been to and how they relate to the situations they're in now where you sit with you sit with Coach bar and he's just got so many experiences that he can go back to we talked about being with that Stanford team and how weak one is so different and how you can learn a lot about your team in week one I'm sure coach be is going to be impressed with what he looks at on film he's got to be impressed what he sees on the scoreboard never going to be satisfied no coaches are but he's going to be impression and I think he's going to be happy with what he learned about his team here in game one well ly back at quarterback here for Jackson State on second down and five looking to his right feeling some pressure pass intended for Benji Parish knock down incomplete and it's interesting Caleb as you look at the score fans watching from the stands watching at home you see 63 to10 but we all know a player and a and a coach will look at that differently absolutely so as a coaching staff as a team how do you guard against your team feeling a little bit too good about yourself well I think the way that you do it without damaging their confidence there's always going to be mistakes in game that you can harp on and say hey you did this wrong no matter what you did right you're going to do something wrong mistakes are going to be made I think the thing you do is you flip that into positive you you put up 63 points on the team but how many points did you leave out there this this is another touchdown you could have had this is another tackle you could have had this is interception you could have had there's ways to spin that the the correction into a positive way where players aren't feeling down on themselves you know 6 through to 10 there's no reason to feel down on yourself but there's still corrections to be made and as a as a coach I think that's the Fine Line you got to walk between protecting and preserving confidence in players but at the same time still pushing them to get the best out of them all right let's go down to Shay Shay hey guys we're talking about these coaches being well traveled and other programs they've been a part of and I asked both of them both of these coaches Coach Hughes and Coach Sanchez what's a program you want to model your teams after be it offense defense special teams and both of them said Alabama coach who's joke that it was a little close to home being that he came from the SEC but he says it's the way the Crimson Tide approached the game they have perfect balance on offense it's what he hated to coach against when he was with the Bulldogs as their defensive coordinator they're great on special teams they make your team onedimensional in every way and Coach Sanchez said something similar in the fact that Alabama they're just consistent there aren't they are not afraid of being a national championship two years in a row which I guess we'll see if that happens again this year so my guess is both of these coaches will be dialed in Saturday for Alabama USC what do you guys think I would say so I mean to have that Target on your back each and every year oh my goodness the the the mental preparation that goes into that that's another aspect of the game that people take for granted you're you're the number one target people are always gunning for Alabama they got that game circled on their calendar at the beginning of each season and for them to consistently be in the talk for the top team in the nation that just speaks volumes to like like coaches said that the philosophy that they carry and the way they go about playing the game there oh the intended receiver Carl oi slow to get up and make it to the sideline and Tony Sanchez you know there's a lot of talk it's been very rare as we get a look at him in the sideline it's rare for a coach to make that jump from the high school level to to the FBS level we'll talk more about that in a moment uh UNLV an Tony Sanchez in troll up 63 to10 e 63-10 is our score if you are joining us late here with 12 minutes to go in the fourth quarter obviously this game has been all Rebels the closest that Jackson State was to UNLV in this game was back in the four first quarter they trailed 14-7 ly going for the end zone and this one goes out of the back of the end zone and Falls incomplete and it's really been all UNLV it's been an outstanding performance Johnny Stanton getting his very first career start as a as a rebel quarterback his first pass is a completion for a 56 yd touchdown to Devonte Boyd he hit Boyd again later for a 32 yd score Lexington Thomas has got into the end zone a couple of times he's out of the game now there's been a lot of good things from youv early I mean there's a lot of questions coming into the game but those questions I think have been answered I think Johnny Stanton has earned the right to be the guy going forward as a quarterback we knew already that Devonte Boyd was going to be a major playmaker as uh you know he is going to get another penalty here and I I tell you co Sanchez is not going to be happy with this there's there's going to be a rough in the kicker call here as as Jackson State lined up to take the field goal and the pressure coming off the edge just trying to lay out make a make a special play on special teams and block the kick but ran into the kicker in the process well and they're going to get Jon miles on that one and not a mistake you would expect from a Senor no absolutely not and I think that's that's probably what Co Sanchez is going to be talking about you see there maybe sold it a little bit not not so much of a contact play there but just one of those plays that Co Sanchez is going to say hey as a look at the score where 63-10 there's no need to make that kind of a mistake fortunately it doesn't result in a first down for Jackson State it's going to be fourth down looks like Jackson State's probably going to kick a field goal again anyway but those kind of plays in a in a tight game could make a big difference and uh Co Sanchez I'm sure will make that a teaching point for his young players and and and for his seniors going forward in the season so this will be an even 30 yard attempt from Jackman left foot of kicker snap hold down this one on its way and boy that one flirted with the left post as well but it's through for the 30yd field goal yeah e last thing okay um we're going real quick cuz you guys haven't seen it you never get to see it we're going to show you that entry video One More Time break that thing up and then we have a special message on the scoreboard you got that so watch the video and then when it ends pay close attention to the message you got that it's pretty freaking [Applause] cool well how cool is that moment from walk on to scholarship player Dalton Baker oh my goodness can't express the joy that you feel as a teammate for a guy that walks onto a team goes through the hard times of having to scrap together any money he can not able to eat team meals at dinner with the team because you know he's not on scholarship to pay for that type of stuff and to see him get rewarded for his hard work and earn a scholarship I tell you we had a guy when I was playing here at unlb Mike Kam mat Elli play receiver he was a walk-on at the time and he came in and he busted his butt trying to make make his make his mark on the team not looking to you know not begging for a handout or anything like that but just wanting to work hard and be a part of the team able to give him a scholarship much like Dalton was able to earn one there being a HomeTown kid and you can't imagine what that means to him and his family the hardships that are going to be you know avoided because he's now on scholarship and you just got to say congratulations to that guy and really be happy for him Baker one of those five players that Shay mentioned earlier in the game who played for Tony Sanchez at Bishop Gorman so a very special connection and a unique opportunity I don't know how many guys you can say I played in college for the same coach I played for in high school no I think we mentioned earlier in the game that it's rare for a coach to make the jump from high school straight to FBS football in the first place let alone to have a chance to coach some of those guys that are uh that are going to that were from your high school and be you know be a part of your college team so it's very rare for that situation to ever occur and Coach Sanchez I think talked about it too there's a small window where that's going to be opportunity where he coached a guy in high school and now they're College eligible and he's going to be able to coach him here so those five players I'm sure we'll all have always have a special place with Coach Sanchez oh it's very unique situation and has not always worked out successfully but I know there's a lot of optimism here and what Tony's been able to do on the other side of town at Bishop Gorman all those years and he's already making a positive impact here this program now they just want to keep the momentum going and add more wins to the win column than they did last year with that 3 and9 season should also point out in now quarterback for UNLV is Dalton sne so Sneed now takes over for Johnny Stanton here with under 11 minutes to go in the fourth quarter that was another player that you know coach cotton mentioned had a great Camp right and is a very impressive player they're they're definitely confident in his ability to go out there and lead the team I think we talked a lot about Kurt paland deck and Johnny stalton and that battle going on for the number one spot but I think these reps are more about a backup spot we're they're trying to see who can feel that backup role because paland has shown that he's able to be a starter he did it last year he he ran this offense and had success with the offense last year so I think this we were expecting to see paland deck but this is more of a move to kind of preserve the guys who you think are going to be number one just get some younger guys some less experienced guys some reps in the game and see how they fair in the game well sneeds first drive comes up a little bit short and so UNLV will Punk this away sne a 6' one 95lb red shirt freshman and again one of those players recruited by Tony Sanchez it's going to bounce and come to arrest at the 45 finally picked up there by the rebels that's where Jackson State will come out and take over things 9 and A2 minutes to go here in the fourth it's been all UNLV from Las Vegas e e e [Music] FR Crawford back here with Caleb Herring and of course Shay peper on the sideline UNLV in control here and again we talked a bit ago about how much do you how good do you feel after a game like this because now you look at the schedule and what lies ahead next week at UCLA is going to be a much different situation right and that's that's one of those thing where the uh the highs and lows are definitely going to show themselves you want to see how your team's going to bounce back this game I think you're going to see one of the the highs of the Season you know is going to dominate this they're going to they're going to win this game going away and you got to turn back turn back around and refocus yourself because you got a tough opponent you're going to the Rose Ball to play UCLA and we're going to see a lot of the younger players a lot of these these players who haven't been in a situation like that where they're coming off of a win going into a tough opponent we're going to see how they respond see how they prepare next week if they're going to be laxidasical going through the motions of you know the weekly preparation they're going to be locked in and ready to go and be more eager to come out and put another performance like this together it's going to be interesting to see next week they're going to face a team offensively too in UCLA with a quarterback and Josh Rosen that's going to have a lot more offensive weapons as that pass Falls incomplete for Jackson State they're they're going to see a lot more offensive weapons much sharper crisper offensive unit it's going to be a huge challenge for the defense and also on the other side the offense as well absolutely and you're going to see one of the big things I think coach Sanchez and the offensive coordinator coach cotton talked about is they're going to have a big size Advantage here against Jackson State the roles are going to be reversed next week against a Pack 12 team who's got the beef up front to combat un's new pound size so it's going to be a bit of a struggle in the trenches and I think that's going to be one of the main differences that you see you Le offensive line may not be able to open those gaping holes for Lexington Thomas and Xavier camell to run through like they were able to do this week against Jackson State pocket collapsing and looks like we might have our first sack of the season and that is the case Antonio zapa with the sack and an interesting story with zapa who has not had the easiest of uh erods in his lifetime and you know that's that's one of the things that you look to a guy like him for inspiration from your team when you're talking about adversity and fighting back and coming back against the odds I think zapus his life story is is taking him through some ups and downs but he's found a way to to make a positive out of it and he's here helping his team find a way to win the games and being a major part of it a contributing part of it fair catch there and so the offense will come back out one more time here so we'll see who will quarterback the UNLV offense when we return e e welcome back to S Boyd Stadium where the score is 6313 in favor of the rebels and guys receiver Devonte Boyd originally from New Orleans he and his mother both were in Hurricane Katrina they're both survivors and were in the Superdome after the tragedy and following Katrina Boyd's mother sent him out here to Las Vegas to live with his uncle so he could attend high school and play football out here and his uncle recently passed away however his mother is here at the game today a very special guest to watch her son put up 135 yards and three touchdowns so far today so a great game for her to be at but a real Feelgood story from Devonte Boyd certainly is Shay thanks very much players overcoming adversity green takes the hand off and a nice run from him first down and more as D sne again back in for this offensive drive at quarterback as well and player down on the field for Jackson [Music] State what you don't like to see uh either way a team that's coming in here trying to you know just just figure out who they are trying to rebuild and they've had a few guys down on the turf with some injuries you hope that those injuries don't hurt them going forward as you take a look at Devonte Boyd here 14 TDS and 26 career games that is impressive he's he's been consistent we talked about the the catch per game he's had at least one catch in each of his games played as a rebel and uh he he's going to be a special player and we talk a lot about uh adversity people overcoming adversity being a a survivor of Katrina and and being able to make it make something of his life out here and earn a scholarship to unov that's got to be a blessing to his family it's one of those special moments to have his mother here able to attend and watch how special he's become as a player on the field and the things that I mean we talk about playing on Sundays and what this kid's life could become this kid may be playing on Sunday someday we may be calling his name for one of those pro teams so that turn around for his family is is going to be a huge thing well Boyd is looking to have a great success he he really misses one of his running mates in that receiver core you get a look there at at Kendall keys out for the season with a knee injury obviously on crutches he he did have surgery uh coach Tony Sanchez saying hey look he's going to have two years of Eligibility when he comes back but boy he was really counted on to be a big part of this offense was a big contributor a year ago expected to be so again this season and it's unfortunate to see him on es but you see kind of a laugh and smile on his face too trying to stay positive it's good to see him in good spirits I mean a season a season ending injury like that so we got a holding penalty here on the offense going to back that that big game by Green up but Kendall key is one of those players who who's going to play opposite of Devonte boy so the attention that boy is going to get as the featured receiver Kendall Keys is going to pick up all those leftovers if he stays Health but he's he's not going to be able to be back this season he does have the elgibility left so there's that to look forward to um but Kendall Keys was was looking to have a great season here that's going to be something that they feel later on in the season but these young receivers are going to step up they're going to lean more on the running game obviously as as we see them dominating the running game here tonight but missing K Keys is definitely going to take an element from that offense ke's had five touchdown pass or receptions rather than the final three games so you talk about tremendous momentum and a reason to be excited for this season going into spring fall camp unfortunate the injury but I mentioned he will be back Xavier Campbell the tail back in the game now for UNLV the second of the The Lex and X show here getting some reps late in the game didn't see much of him throughout the game he came in a few times but now getting some reps making some things happen getting his legs going here Jackson States down through the years has had their share of players go on to the NFL Walter pton sweetness Jackie Slater LM Barney a good group of players historically in the NFL and well even the swack itself you look at the entire conference Jerry Rice and uh Coach Hughes is is one who's who's very knowledgeable about the history and the the his Tradition at Jackson State and in the swag conference as unob breaks a long run here Campell able to get to the edge and turn it up field for a huge gain across Midfield Xavier Campbell with an outstanding run there and that's something again when you go look at the tape that's what you're going to want to see absolutely and that's something too that the coaches mentioned they lost were in a lot of close games last year right certainly this is not the case in point this game we understand that absolutely you get down I believe the stat was all but three games were just went into the fourth quarter there was just a touchdown difference whether they were leading or trailing by a touchdown right you know Barney Cotton mentioned yesterday maybe our conditioning absolutely wasn't quite what it could have been to help us pull a lot of those close games out I was here for that loss to San Jose State right in overtime and that was one of those close games that they came out on the wrong end of and you hope that they're in better condition maybe this year and you see it's good to see a nice long run absolutely and and that was one of their their main focuses going into the off seon not only building size and getting the strength up front but just working on that conditioning to finish I mean there's games that you're going to have to play all four quarters this like you said this isn't one of those games where the fourth quarter is going to decide it but you want to be able to know that hey I got something left in the tank if it comes down to the last three minutes I can break that long run or I can finish that block that I need to finish in order to get the team to lead to win those close games well Tony Sanchez telling us this program has been set up like never before and you can attest that Addie said there's a nutritionist on staff now players are eating better than they ever have they're paying a lot of attention to those small details eating right hydrating taking care of yourself a lot of guys have put on weight you talk about this offensive line and you go down through the starters Kyle saxet gained 20 pounds now up to 290 Michael chalier uh he missed some practice he's a 300 pounder they want to be bigger more physical like we had talked about right Geron Caldwell a true freshman he's 315 lb uh you got Jason Paulo had a great Camp 64 315 so again they're they're putting weight on these guys and we've seen the results in this now it's what does it look like the rest of the season against the UCLA against the power teams in the Mountain West absolutely and I think this year is going to be a good measuring stick because last year they had some tough opponents as well they've had UCLA here at home they went to the big house and played Michigan and those are some teams that are historically going to have the size up front and in the trenches so now year one obviously a little lighter as a team you know was now this year they have some weight behind them let's see how they Faire against those kind of teams this year and you see like the things that you said that they that Tony Sanchez has been able to put in place at UNLV the nutritionist on staff the the monitoring of the meal plans and just the the strength and conditioning program that's that's had a great job done a great job of adding size and stamina to these guys that's that's huge and it it's going to pay dividends here as the season progress oh Dalton sne pass is complete so he's getting in some good reps that's Al Allen koi I believe on the catch yeah Koy with the reception a story about him he's he's going to be another one of those Walk-Ons who who may eventually earn his way to a scholarship Alan koie came this spring believe it or not he came to Spring and he just tried out for the team wasn't a preferred walk on or anything like that just Tred it out just wanted to see if he can make it made the team ended up staying around through through offseason camp got invited to fall camp and and made it through fall camp and uh throughout the throughout this the fall Camp earned a spot on on the rotation he's he's in the travel team he's traveling to the hotel of the team so this is a guy who who earlier this year had no expectation to be playing division one college football working his way onto the roster and and and being an impact you watch him in practice he's a nuisance out there to the Defenders he's small he's quick he's got good hands and I could see him being another player that that gets that that opportunity to earn a scholarship here for UNLV it's UNLV gives it up on Downs as the defense will now come back out onto the field after UNLV turning it over there on Downs Jackson State back on the field and their offense some of the backups there you get another look at Z and we touched on it but it is really it is really fascinating story this is a young man whose father was convicted of murder when he was 3 months old he was sleeping on park benches it's it's an unbelievable story just in the Las Vegas paper here a week or so ago sleeping on park benches at the age of eight his mother sadly was was addicted to drugs lost that addiction battle she passed away his father died in prison he spent time in group homes and here he is using football as a Salvation for him and to read the quotes of what he's been able to do so many people could have gone on the other way and he himself he had some he himself had a run in with the law he admitted he was young and and and made him mistake right paid you know paid what he needed to do and and took care of the matters he need to take care of and here he is uh playing college football in in a big part of of unov not a guy at least tonight on the two deep out there here in the fourth quarter and uh it's a great story right it is and I I fortunately my time at unov I was able to to get the the beginning of his career as a rebel and I on on my tail end and I was able to meet him and and talk with him about some of that adversity and the way he handles it you know he you wouldn't know if you didn't talk to him about it specifically that that that's what he''s been through when he when he starts unraveling his story you just can't believe that somebody could go through something like that and still have a smile on his face and still be energetic and excited about life and that's that's the kind of guy he is yeah he has his troubles but who doesn't and and this is just an epic story of how football can kind of protect and shield people and give them life lessons that they wouldn't learn or opportunities that they wouldn't have otherwise and zapa is making the most of it here with the rebels and and you got to be happy for a guy like that and happy that the program has given him a chance and he's taking taking the opportunity and and he's running with it right now and I think as much as the football he talked about in that story about the defense being a real family to him having lost his parents and having had that diff difficult upbringing that he really has truly embraced a lot lot of times people say it's my family and they just kind of say it but I you really feel like a young man like that I think he certainly means that that it is he does feel like a family to him oh it definitely has a different meaning to him and and this is this is one of the things that coaches sign up for when they when they come to to be coaches not just to be coaching X and O's but they're life skills coaches they they they're around these guys more than anybody they're around them more than their parents are they're they're entrusted with their with people's with people's lives essentially and uh for for zapa like you said that family has has been nothing but the players around him the coaches that he's had on staff and he's been able to grow with them and to learn with him and to go through some pains with him and and bond on a level that he's not been able to with anybody else and it's kind of protected him and it's it's fostered a a beautiful relationship that that you got to just appreciate you got to stand back and just say wow that's a good story regardless of where he ends up in life it's it's a good story for him here and now to to be where he is so AA gets some meaningful snaps now Tony oh is he cracking a smile a little bit yeah it is I think he might have heard us from up here as DT sne takes a knee these final 53 seconds tick off and it's going to be the first season opening win for UNLV since 2009 and a good feeling to be able to be one and0 and I don't know how long this one lasts oh no I I think tomorrow morning is is about as far as this Victory goes I think for Coach Sanchez and that staff they'll be in the meeting room tomorrow I mean you might have a little extra time since it's a Thursday game but I'm sure they're they're probably already on to UCLA and starting a game plan and figure that game out so they can have good showing again next week Sneed comes out and after a three- win season a year ago Tony Sanchez and UNLV begins with a 63-13 win to start 2016 over Jackson State from the swack and an impressive performance for the rebels and their new starting quarterback and Johnny Stanton who had a tremendous game all the running backs played exceptionally well Devonte Boyd being Devonte Boyd right uh as the junior a big night for him and a lot of players in the red jerseys got a chance to get on the field and get some playing time and and halftime very rarely in a post game that we talk about halftime how was a sonic boom of the South a sonic boom of the South was it's a mustsee if you haven't seen it I I'm I'm going to advise you make a trip somewhere and find out where they're where they're performing because they're special I mean the things you hear about about you know the bands in the South and how how they get down but that was that performance at halftime was captivating it was all those things we extended halftime a little bit just to give them enough time to entertain us and it was worth it I say it was worth it and how many TV networks or online games do you get a chance to watch the fans at halftime I'll tell you about zero the campus insiders here in the Mountain West network uh we're proud to bring you that at halftime that tremendous performance and a great job by everybody uh in the truck to provide all kinds of different shots and faces and and seeing the Masterpiece that was the Jackson State University marching band performance although I will say they did leave they are not here anymore uh they did they did take off maybe they had a Showdown on the Mirage or something maybe they're opening up for Britney Spears down there tonight or something took about five buses to get the whole band but yeah they they they were they were parked out a long time ago all right let's go down to Shay with a Victorious Tony Sanchez yes coach Devonte boy three touchdowns part of a dominant offense that put up 63 points today your thoughts on their performance you know Devonte is a great player and he has been for a long time so he's doing the things you expect him to come out do and be a Difference Maker uh overall I thought it was a good performance thought we came out a little slow Lish after half offensively you know and sometimes it happens in games like that but the defense regroup and did a good job of getting a bunch of three and outs speaking of the defense I know at halftime you weren't necessarily happy with them thought they gave up some big plays some long drives how do you think they adjusted they did a great job coach Bears is one of the best he went in there and talked those guys settled them down talked about made a couple little adjustments and uh and two anytime you get two scores on defense that's a big night week one in the books with the w but now you've got to play UCLA how do you carry that momentum over we're we're excited about that it's a great opportunity you know I mean it's been some 2009 since we've gone one and0 so it's a big deal for this program and you know where we're going and UCLA you know this it's another game on the schedule you we're going to prepare like we always do and uh it's going to be a good game Bring it on I love it coach thanks for the time appreciate you guys take care thank you thanks guys all right great work down there Shay tonight already looking forward to next week in UCLA go to like that got to put Tony Sanchez on
