as Baltimore City's population shrinks the people who live here and have bought homes here and send their kids to school here and work here and want to stay here are still trying to figure out what their next step will be will it be into another home in Baltimore city um or will it be somewhere in the surrounding areas census data shows close to 18,000 people have left the city in the last 3 years a lot of people who have been fairly long-term residents of Baltimore City are moving out now new census data is giving us a glimpse at who is leaving and who is staying data shows from 2022 to 2023 several thousand black residents left the city but more Hispanic individuals moved in mayor Brandon Scott addressing it on the radio Thursday morning when you dig deeper into those numbers Brian that's who we're losing right the middle black middle class folks like myself in C4 and we have to do a much better job of making sure that they are able to stay here here in Baltimore and all of us play part in Economist Anan Basu says in addition to that one of the other things that we noted is that larger households moved out families people with children often moved out and smaller households often single people for instance or just couples moved in and so while the population of households in Bal City actually expanded the overall population shrink and a lot of families keep moving out of Bal City because they're worried about things like obviously crime and schools and also property taxes issues we've been reporting on with low score and City Schools I would love to just be able to look every parent in the eye and be able to say every single school is a high quality School in Baltimore City and we're not there yet to Quality of Life crimes walking around you seen quality life violations almost every 20 30 40 ft so to speak that is what will drive people out of our city residents are feeling the impact it just seems to be way less safe it's not just in the city Baltimore County's population is also shrinking going from 853 th000 in 2020 to $844,000 in 2023 and I think it speaks to the fact that many people don't view the value proposition in Baltimore City and Baltimore County uh particularly fondly uh and so they're moving with their feet they're voting with their feet and going someplace else he says the cost of living the economy and how safe residents feel play a big role people move to the county in very large numbers they saw higher quality of life there those Dynamics have shifted the leadership in talson which is the county seat needs to figure this out in Baltimore Jessica kab Fox 45 News I'm Mary Bubala thank you for watching here's another video for you to watch also take some time to subscribe to our YouTube channel
