the voes only Spring Concert my name is Zachary Wars this is voes only and our lovely professor Prof Grooms before we continue i' like to remind you all to turn off all Electronics or noise making devices we are recording this concert it will soon be available on YouTube for all to enjoy under the Lindenwood University music department or music YouTube yeah we are celebrating the culmination of a year of performances both on and off campus it's been a busy year for voices only singing the National Anthem at home football games performing at Lindenwood events and a spring recruiting tour to high schools in the Kansas City area we also had the great privilege to participate in a voices only reunion concert this past March in which we were joined by over 40 alumni of this group celebrating the 17 17-year leadership of our lovely Professor Grooms voices only is known for singing Everything Acappella from the Renaissance to present day and we will not disappoint tonight you just heard AUD your heart and English magical from the Renaissance period magicals were the pop music of the Renaissance they were usually about love I oh there we go our next our next magical is in French so let me give you a short version of the translation with you it goes la la la I shouldn't tell you this gossip there's a man who follows his wife around town because she is beautiful but he is ugly he follows her around town because she flirts with all the men but I really shouldn't tell you the next song is one of our favorite Modern Art songs She Walks in Beauty this is a beautiful love song with text by performed this year both have to do with Heaven sing We to Heaven became one of our favorites it speaks to many major events in life with the sentiment to sing me through these major events in life way over in bu land is a spiritual that evokes the joy of Heaven the lyrics we're going to have a good good time allow the listen to relate to the best time of your life either on Earth or in the the pioneer days flirting has changed a lot in the last 100 years Nelly is followed by Simple Gifts an arrangement of the well known Shaker tune the Melody has been used in orchestral music TV commercials and movie scores this Arrangement is by Derek Johnson the original arranger for Disney World's voices of Liberty it is still a part of their performance repertoire our solists are Grace assistant director Lucy Pritchard where's Lucy are you hiding well I'm G to talk about Lucy Pritchard um she has been our assistant director this year I met her my sophomore year oh hey come here this is Lucy I met her my sophomore year her freshman year and she was this quiet little freshman didn't say a lot put her head down worked really really hard and then we discovered this really fun characteristic about Lucy which is that she loves chickens um uh for those who have been in voice only with her we know her Snapchat username is chicken awesome and she has a crochet chicken purse and very quickly we learned this quiet shy Lucy is not so quiet and shy this year especially she has really stepped up in this leadership position many of the things we did this year couldn't have been possible without her she is an incredible leader in groom's absence and when Grooms is there she is looking for all those little details all the ways that we can improve get better being that extra set of ears and hold us to a very high standard and has always held us to those expectations so for Lucy we have this for you to help you remember some of the special memories from this year like Kansas City yes a chicken a chicken and as well as everyone in voices only wanted to write you a little note to not only congratulate you for the amazing year you've had as assistant director but to thank you because we couldn't have done this without you so thank you liy hey we're gonna switch now okay am I stay somebody all right okay well I'm here to talk about Grace Ericson I don't think that either of us knew that this was happening um okay well Grace is our um choir manager she is always in jshi always here I swear if I'm here she's here any hour of any day but she's not a music Major yeah she has worked so hard to get everything organized for like everything that we do um she planned our entire Kansas City trip which was incredible um but basically somebody see I was going to grab my thing what thing go to the go to the closet oh you've got it no that's it so good no you've got it Luke you've got it in your hands right now so this is for grace and I love I it's not here yet but but there's a jersey on the way for your favorite girl yeah okay [Applause] no I got it I got it I know about the intermission too oh sure okay hey um so this next song is called This Land Is Your Land um it's actually one of the first songs Pro Professor Grooms uh ever heard voices only sing when we first formed with uh Dr Jim Henry and the song has been a staple and voices only only ever vocal quartet the New York Voices this song was written for his wedding day to honor his wife blue skies is a standard song originally written by Irving Berlin our version features soloist Luke jurgensmeyer finally yeah finally crazy written by Willie Nelson and perform formed by paty kleene has been arranged as a jazz ballad it is another one of our favorites and we're featuring Ian Pierce as our soloist is gentle and Al of all others she be [Music] I to hear her sing to see her Dan she will the best [Laughter] advance I to see her fingers that be so small in my con she [Music] pass I I mentors is to provide opportunities for life lessons when I can find a song that can also make them think this is a win for me the next song written and formed and performed by the real group is particularly poignant today in consideration of social media it expresses the many ways we can use our words and hopefully we'll think a little bit more about how we use those words and a on a string will hold forever human SP possession we all as a complicated tool created by Man implicated by words possession of the genius and theol everybody everywhere everywh words find them you can use them Smith The Wizard of Oz this Arrangement is a beautiful Jazz ballot Arrangement one of the groups that popularized Acappella singing in this century is pentatonics run to you was one of their early excited to present to you their Disney Love Medley it features several of our members of soloist and really shows off the vocal range of the group through eight part harmony this is our Disney Love Medley while we're getting set for this vtif is a group of grown professional adults that are each one on a microphone and they sing they are eight there are eight of them and they sing eight part harmony in a microphone and they have a director uh for these students to put this together just this spring since spring break has been quite the feat and I'm really proud of them for what they have done so um I'm really looking forward to this I think you will love it I'm a Disney fan any if you're not a Disney fan I'm not even going to apologize but um so this is one of our favorites and they tonight but before we get to that there are a couple of things I'd like to talk to you about number one um and this is I'm totally going off script uh this group is not made of all music Majors so I just want to show you a little bit if you are any kind of music Major raise your hand if you are any kind of theater major please raise your hand if you are not a music or a theater or a musical theater major please raise your hand so this is a group that is from all over the community and there are several students in this group and from the alumni group that said I wouldn't have stayed at lynen wood if it were not for voices only and so I think it's very important for us to to think about that and this is a very diverse group age-wise too seniors Juniors sophomores freshman so it's there's lots of room for growth and we're really excited about that if it were not for music education I would not be here if I wasn't in choir in church and school I wouldn't have wanted to be a choir director and um that that passion came to me very early I had a Junior High music teacher who was kind of crazy um but uh a principal came into the room and he said oh I didn't know you could play the piano and the choir director said to him she could play newspaper if it had notes on it I don't know how that happens but that's what she said um but we're not for Education music education I would not be here and if it were not for music education in our K12 schools these people would not have even auditioned for this choir and uh so in because I want that Legacy to continue there has been formed um a scholarship and it is a name scholarship and once we get enough money donated so yes I am asking for money um when once we reach the goal of $225,000 then we can offer a scholarship to an incoming freshman and it is the Pamela group vocal music education scholarship [Music] so if you want information for that I'm happy to share that with you just shoot me an email or contact me on Facebook or we can get that information to you any way you want but I want vocal music education to continue so that we can keep having these kinds of groups for the legacy of lynen wood so thank you for ging let me letting me do that little commercial I also would like to do a little preview because uh this is my last year at lyndenwood it's the last of 17 years at lyndenwood it's been a wonderful trip it's been a great it's a it's been a great year this year and it's been a great 17 years um although I'm very sad to leave these students I know that now we know that they are officially in wonderful hands to continue this Le Legacy of quality and music making and he's here tonight so I'd like to introduce Professor Connor Scott who will start this fall as the coral director of women so now my thank yous I would like to thank you um I would like to thank the production crew um under the tutelage of my good friend Professor Adam Donahue um and under the leadership of Tim Shackleford they are recording this they will produce this uh for our YouTube channel uh they've made sure they've done the sound checks and they were here for all of our dress rehearsal met all of our needs they're just wonderful so thank you so much I'd also like to thank Austin V Winkle he's the one that made our backdrops look so pretty and wonderful and we really appreciate the extra he goes the extra step just to add to the beauty of the music making here I'd like to thank my colleagues our other full-time faculty Sebastian boots uh Justin dienzo um for their collaborative Spirit we this team of music program people is fabulous and it's we are always collaborating and working together and I just love that community that we've created I also love what how that trickles out into the community of the music program with the students we really try to Foster um a sense of community and family and support for each other and they sure do that very well our Performing Arts department chair Emily Jones uh gets me supports me gets me anything I need as soon as she can and just as always there whether I want to scream or yell or jump for joy or cry a little um she's always there for me and I appreciate that our Deans Dr vosovic Dr M mcmackin and Dr Harris have been tremendous support to the music program and for voices only and a little bird told me that one of our biggest fans at the university is here tonight um thank you president Porter for joining us tonight we appreciate you he has really supported us and made us feel like a vital part of this community and so we really appreciate that lastly I'd like to thank these students I've had the privilege of teaching conducting and mentoring these amazing humans this year I am blessed by their presence their work ethic and their Joy of singing they have truly been a bright spot in my career they have been a bright spot in my weeks in my days they are a family they're a family and they will always be my kids thank you parents for sharing them with me thank you family and friends and parents for contributing to these amazing humans and thank you for attending tonight in support of live music Coral singing and in Sharing in these moments with us we really appreciate you thanks so [Applause] much no it's okay please go I have been given the honor to uh represent the voices of voices only and um thank oh my gosh thank uh Grooms for the group um thank you uh you have been more than just a director but let's see a counselor um Mom mentor all all the things that we need when we when we need it um anytime we need somebody to talk to if she's in the office she's ready and willing to listen um and so we are going to be very sad to see you leave but we are so thankful for the time that you did but it it kind of he kind of turned a corner and did some things really just wanted to explore some different sounds and different cultures and one of the songs that really made the top charts of that
