Intro with the release of the new UniFi Cloud Gateway Max you might be looking to replace your old UDR or if you're like myself you finally got one gig fiber internet and the UDR just doesn't cut it anymore what you don't want to do is set up the ucg Max from scratch because that will mean you have to reconfigure whole network firewall rules read all your devices maybe put some custom images there read all your UniFi devices and configure those as well and this can literally take you hours to do so instead I'll show you how you can migrate from the dream router to the cloud Gateway Max with minimal [Music] downtime my name is B spery founder of Apex 1it all my content is free to all I ask is that you subscribe and smash the like button and if you have a small business and you need help setting up a secure network just reach out to us using the links in the video description Overview and we're going to take the system config file so we're going to create a backup of the EDR in all the settings that has and deploy it to our new ucg Max to do this successfully we kind of have to add a couple more devices right so our UDR before was a wireless access point and it has two Poe ports on here so you might have had like a camera like this for example something else you know this is the Smart power strip that's through Wi-Fi computer plugged in things like that and now we're going to replace the UDR with the ucg max which does not have Poe ports so that that's why we're adding a Poe switch here you can also use a Poe injector if you need to if you just have one Poe device and with that we're also adding a wireless access point so that's powered by our Poe switch and so is our UniFi protect camera and this access point will also allow our smart power strip to work and any other obviously wireless devices so you can tell that you know going to ucg Max it does require more devices that's why this UDR was really pretty sweet device they had Speed Test on UDR first let's go to our UniFi console so here ours is called Apex one here UDR and first I guess let's I'm just showing you let's test it without intrusion protection on you can simply go to dashboard then scroll down here to speed test and click run now so this should be the speed not you know I'm connected through Wi-Fi right now but this should be the speed at the UDR itself right so straight from your internet providers modem or on and we'll see what we get so one thing to know here is that I'm testing this when there's a bunch of traffic happening right I'm even recording this and it's actually uploading this video as I'm recording so maybe not the best test but it is a I would say stress test even without intrusion detections on I'm paying for 1 gig but I'm getting what this 30% download right now uh and about 50% of the upload speed and I can tell you I mean i' I've tested this more before and realistically I would get more symmetrical it'll be more than 500 both ways and in fact we can even test this again here's my second test now and I actually paused my video cuz again when I'm recording this it's constantly uploading and a bunch of other traffic going on here you can already see it's a bit better so realistically when I tested before I can get the 700 symmetrical both ways without intrusion detection on so let's go ahead and turn it back on this is on let's go to High which is basically going to be all of them on the UDR which is 11 and networks by the way you can't add more than three on the EDR just FYI Supply the changes let's go back to the dashboard and now with all the detections on so 11 on three networks let's run the test I've ran this test a couple times now and this is pretty consistent so I'm surprised I'm actually getting more than 500 on the upload but you can see it downloads like 30% of my promised you know 1 gig speed so that's exactly why we're doing this change and this should tell you sir ISP speed potential is telling me 106% but that's because you actually want to go here and adjust your ISP settings so this was an old one so now it should be 1,000 right so this is something you'll want to do now after adjusting my ISP speed to 1 gig and I reran the test you can see now it's more accurate it says ISP speed potential 41% so if I'm paying for 1 gig I don't want 41% something like 90 even 80% would been fine but 41% no way so let's go Plan Migration ahead and see there's a couple things we want to change for first before we actually go and start the migration process first thing you should know is that you need to be an actual owner not just an admin on your UniFi console so you can go to the console settings here and just scroll down to transfer ownership if you're not okay then secondly you want to plan out your network before you actually unplug and do any backups things like that so recall that first you know you had the UDR and you're not just replacing it one for one you probably need a PE switch and you definitely need an wireless access point before you unplug the UDR and do any backups or anything you want to unplug any devices plugged into these four L ports on the UDR or at least keep in mind where you're going to plug them in so it might look something like this let's say all of these right I just have two devices plugged in but maybe you had another camera you know maybe a TV routed physically to this you want to add your new devices that you're going to add while the UDR is still there so this is just the front of the UDR obviously if you're adding a Poe switch go ahead and add it now add a wireless access point now before you do any migration so that once this is all set up you know and here for example I have a computer still plugged into the UDR because I'm going to eventually then just transfer it and plug it into the ucg Max and that will that should work fine the only thing you want to watch out for is that if you have any port profiles going on anywhere uh make sure things go to the proper vlans if you even have that set up and if you do you'll know how to do that so just make sure that that's set up correctly that everything is going to the correct Network once you swap out the UDR and put the ucg max in and again overall the main point is that whatever devices you're going to add go ahead and add them now well the ones that are required like the poe switch and the UDR because obviously now you will not have anything plugged in to the back of the UDR and once you have that set go ahead and go back to your UDR console UniFi console here and we're ready to make the backups and here in the settings console Entire System Backup settings you'll notice right here system backups so this is what UniFi recommends to do you can do also different backups for the applications but when you're doing a migration or just in general you actually want to back up the entire system so this is our system backup and you will have this on also by default on weekly and this is going to the cloud that's associated with your accounts so once you're all set with all the new devices go ahead and click backup Now to create a backup at this very instance once it's done you'll see that there's another backup now option available and you should have been automatically prompted to download this file that ends in unify at this point you now have a backup in the cloud associated with your accounts and on your own computer right in your own downloads folder again now you can go and for example let's go to UniFi Network you can back up the configuration file so you go to settings go to system backups click click download here then choose what you want to download you know I actually want some history with this so that's what that means last 30 days and I can download that configuration file with the log files as well okay I'll let that do its thing you can do again for any other applications that you have protect I can go in here generate a configuration file backup right so system right there and for migration you can download that file and some other things know here so there's a recovery code you shouldn't need this but you could go ahead reveal the code copy it save it just in case you might need it to transfer your UniFi protect cameras and one last thing to note with UniFi protect which is important is that even though you will successfully Archive UniFi Protect migrate all your cameras what you will not get is all the recordings and all that nice timeline all those detections they will not migrate so what I would recommend you do is go ahead and backup or archive some files or search make sure you don't need anything from the past you know whatever number of days you're recording for go to your dashboard and if you don't have video archiving set up yet go ahead and do that it's just you you can add either a Microsoft One drive or Google Drive you can choose you know which camera here to add choose a time frame maybe the last two days or something last day or certain times choose certain files and go ahead and Export that wherever you want it you can of course I'm not going to go into all the det details we can find maybe certain detections files like that and just export those particular files just download it to your computer Disable Modem Power Cycle and one last thing so in UniFi network if you have a smart power strip or you have the pdu you probably have auto power cycle if the internet goes down right so if we get our smart power strip here let's go to settings and for the modem for example I have it turned on to for the modem to power cycle if it detect an internet outage now just to keep your downtime lower you want to disable this just because once it detects internets out you know your console ucg Max might power down power back on or your gateway and just might be annoying and and slow you down so go ahead and turn it off and for any other outlist that you have turn have that enabled for you also want to disable Restore Backup that now you should be ready to go ahead and plug in your ucg max you should probably go to your topology here first verify you have everything set up as you need need to everything's online right and then you'll grab your ucg max you don't have to unplug your UDR yet you'll come here and you'll plug in your ucg Max from the W port on the back to a any of the landan ports on the UDR so that's indicated here with this red cable and from here you have two options if you do have another ethernet port that you can use on your computer the easiest way is you know you grab let's say this is your computer you plug it into one of the land ports and you'll need that to access like the console interface to set this up or you can actually leave your computer plugged in as it is or not plugged in and grab you know your smartphone iPad whatever and just like with all the other UniFi consoles you can just come close to it with Bluetooth and set this up and you'll be able to retrieve your cloud backup in this example I'm actually going to go ahead and plug in my computer right now to a Lamport on the ucg max it might take a couple minutes but once the ucg max is online on that little display it's actually going to give you an IP address most likely 192.168.1.1 so if you are plugged in directly you'll go to that address now since I'm actually routed plugged in to the ucg max I'll go ahead through the web browser hit return and right away actually you know before we name this so this is pretty new right I'm running already version 4 you can click restore from backup now if this won't work for you I'll just tell you from the beginning here here go ahead and click next and just sign in and I guess I'll show you at the end you can still go to console settings and restore from a backup so I'm going to go ahead and click restore from backup and that's why it's asking for my UI account because that backup went to the cloud right then click sign in multiactor do that as well and it's prompting me to restore from backup so here's my Apex one it's show me which time there's all the other ones that did adamx as well so here by default it's going to restore everything which is what we want to do but if we just want to restore one thing we can do that here as well and just select it like this but we want the entire system so let's select that and click next and let's see how long this takes so it's 4:43 p.m. here first here it downloaded the backup that's what this means it's restoring even all the admin users right so this is the benefit of doing this instead of just like Network for example and protect which is what it's going to do next and if you had other applications installed it will show you that as well we're still restoring here uh just to show you what's going to happen here next once it's all done right I'm going to kind of as soon as possible once it's undone just so the UDR doesn't stay connected to any of the devices I'm going to grab the ucg max well unplug the UDR place the ucg max in its place and like the switch plug that in computer whatever else was plugged into to the EDR I'll just switch that over okay so we're 10 minutes in it's 4:53 p.m. it's saying it's restore and protect uh but actually it has a check mark so it's probably done with that it's I guess finalizing some other things and I purposely left one of the cameras offline to see if there would be a problem with that or not and by the way the ucg max the actual display on the unit itself also gives you like a timeline it also shows me a little computer icon meaning that I'm connected via Ethernet and I'm migrating so we'll see what happens here hopefully not too much longer but actually the whole network is still online because we have not disconnected the UDR yet now actually what I realized is this console is already set up and ready to go the display now gives me my original Gateway IP address meaning the one that I had for the UDR so the reason why it's stuck like this is because my screen stuck like this but the ucg max itself says it's already restored so I'm going to go ahead and unplug the UDR because now it's all confused right my gayway IP address is no longer 192.168.1.1 so let's unplug now this points and see what happens now what I've did so far got rid of the UDR the ucg is in its place my computer's connected to it uh the poe switch and everything else has shown I've also manually power cycled the modem so the on andc or whatever you have just to give it the best chance and hopefully we don't need to power cycle the ucg max I've stopped recording just for a second here I tried to go to unify.com it wasn't available yet so I went to the IP address which was you know the one that my UDR had before and just now it kind of finished the little loading thing in like one second it shows me that it's been restored so I should be able to go to dashboard now but I just want to check that I can go to unify.com so let's try that Verify Migration because it was plugged in you just have to unplug the ethernet cable plug it back in or turn your Wi-Fi on and off on whatever device you're on and then you'll be able to go back to unify.com and what you can see in my site manager and you should see your old console that you had the UDR that's offline and your new one now that's online and it shows you which Cloud Gateway you actually have right so this is the max that is online so for this old one you know you could click into it and actually if you want to you can delete it eventually you'll want to do it so so click here to remove it and it shows you that you can't do that until 48 Hours has passed let's go back and let's click into our new ucg Max I'm in the dashboard so far everything's looking good it's pretty wild I mean the downtime here was like 3 minutes or something it was just a modem rebooting all the clients it looks like at least most I think it had like 40 Wi-Fi connections we'll see but I literally didn't have to do anything yet at all right I'm just in the dashboard right now that is pretty sweet and the fact that you could have just done this on your phone on Bluetooth right this is why uh UniFi is UniFi okay let's do a speed test first but we want to check our security settings okay intrusion prevention so now it's on custom let's click here so it has 11 out of the 35 selected so these 11 are just the ones that the UDR had so now with our ucg Max we can actually have all of them and the easiest way will be to click High then if you see customize high selects all 35 Sweet let's apply those changes let's go to our UniFi devices okay so we just had to provision that and now it's back online so now we Speed Test on UCG Max can safely go do uh to the dashboard and we can run a speed test so then this speed test is with all the intrusion prevention turned on to the max nice 940 already 930 sweet that's what I'm talking about all right look at that 91% see this is what we want to see so again this is the speed at the ucg max at the unit itself with everything turned on we're giv it 1 gig about right this is what your IP promises this could be technically lower so that is awesome now so we're getting 91% there let's turn off ISP so intrusion detection is off apply changes just wait for that to turn green it's ready let's go dashboard and a new speed test it'll probably be the same right sweet so as expected we're still 91% because that full intrusion detection has no effect on our speed because we're given it 1 gig and with the ucg max with all detections turned on you can still get 1 gig and that's what we're seeing so that is perfect Verify WiFi let's just do some final checks so we want to check maybe our Wi-Fi right cuz the EDR had a wireless access point so we might want to check those settings and we'll look at protect as well under settings Wi-Fi let's check out this one this is our main one and you see we have broadcasting APS all before I had an option to specify which ones since we only have one access point is given it to that one access point so that's all working right and I already disconnected my computer from ethernet I'm actually connected to Wi-Fi so that is working as expected now if it was wasn't one thing I would check is just go through all your Wi-Fi ssids here and just double check that you're actually broadcasting on that access point that you have or on all the ones that you have then let's Verify UniFi Protect jump to protect and it is now showing our ucg Max as the MVR so this one has the 500 GB nvme storage in there it looks like we have to reset up our Cloud archive with this new one obviously our capacity here is updated and let's see so our unified devices are here great so we do have you know even our camera that was offline and it's it's still not plugged in which is why it's offline so it also got transferred no problem let's see okay so we did not have any detections yet but we can tell right there's no history obviously just like we expected because that's just the limitations when you're migrating no detections yet so I would the only thing here yeah it looks like we do want to set up our Cloud archive if you had this set up before so I would do that and here here I'm just checking that everything got transferred correctly and actually it looks like not quite so the AI events disabled looks like you have to return that on as well I'm looking at one of PTZ one of the cameras here so it does look like it it saved the home view that it has those settings as well but it does look like the AI events glitched out cuz I'm pretty sure I had this on cuz that wouldn't make sense for me to have that off so let's see smart detection zones yes see it even saved my AI detections here yeah but for some reason um it just had but looks like it saved all these settings here and all the ones that I had turned on it just for some reason disabled that so anyways I'll save that but looks like most settings so this is the kind of thing you might want to do double check that everything got transferred I'm not sure if that's because the G5 PTZ is a new camera or what but cool I'll actually go in here Restore Protect Config to protect and import the file that we downloaded from migration okay so I clicked import I just uploaded that file and looks like it's I said it was successful now it's rebooting the protect application it's also starting back up on its own so we'll just give that a minute and I just click back into protect once it booted back up and interestingly enough I actually did not set up the cloud archive but looks like it's already set up so it was helpful to download the protect configuration file and re-upload restore that let's check on that G5 PTZ cuz I actually did not change the settings on it like I did not say what I was showing you earlier settings here so see the create AI events is on and I did not save that last time when I came in here I did not app the changes so it actually picked this up from the configuration file so then I would say it is helpful to go in here before you do the backup restoration come in here and actually download this configuration or migration file and that was helpful so actually restored um every little detail that overall backup missed which probably just a bug it got 99% of everything but just missed that one Final Tips thing I think that went pretty smooth for upgrading from a UDR to a ucg Max and if you were able to do that let me know if you're able to do that straight from your phone just using Bluetooth and setting up the device and backing up or restoring from the cloud let me know how that went if it was actually smooth or if you had any problems or problems with protect I guess I would say still try to download that protect migration file uh just in case and if this video was helpful to you please go ahead and like subscribe share this video with anyone who will be migrating to the ucg max if you need to learn about the ucg max I'll have it linked on the screen in the description check that out if you need help again reach out using the contact links in the video description thanks for watching see you in the next one [Music] he
