covering uh Marquez Valdez scantling your boy and I'm going like why why can we please just cover the one guy so I hope Andy Reid shows up tonight and just and does the same thing to them because they on heaters I mentioned the Giants For Heaven's Sake I mean Eli Manning's entire Hall of Fame career is based on two seasons of doing exactly that but I I I do like to apply lessons to every start of the football football season and I'm not going to make the mistake that I made with Tom Brady and the Patriots or Tom Brady in particular where I was just trying to be ahead of the game and tell you this is it this is when the Dynasty is over or this is it this is when Tom Brady's gonna drop off and we're doing it again with Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs as if people think they're being brilliant like I once did by going I'm tell you what this is the year where everybody catches up to Patrick Mahomes it won't be Patrick Mahomes will still be the best quarterback in the league the Chiefs will still be the team to beat everybody who's tried to position themselves uh in their division has fallen flat on their face and trying to do so and I think the Chiefs will get back to the Super Bowl this is no knock on the trendy teams that are out there because the two trendiest teams going into the start of the season are the Lions and the Texans but the problem is with those two teams versus the Chiefs who understand what the expectations are they understand the scrutiny they understand a Reload and get back out there and not sweat it if they go through some ups and downs in the course of the regular season like the Chiefs said last year before winning the Super Bowl can the Lions and the Texans deal with expectations CJ strad last year was very much like oh my goodness can you believe this guy's doing it but now there's like some serious Stakes for the for the Texans and I've seen some people picking them to get to the Super Bowl this upcoming season which is a pretty trendy thing along with the Lions although now that Dan Campbell's and riblets at Applebee's I don't know if that's really going to keep going for me boneless wings always go for the riblets Patriots about how great he's going to look in practice and don't get your hopes up based on practice I love all of that uh give me like a Vibe check though of where Tennessee is because I you know they had the henen hooker year in 22 where he gets hurt and they kind of Fall Apart part at the end there the season the South Carolina loss was just stupid um and then they come into last year I thought they would really I thought they really had a chance to be in the playoff last year they end up being a disappointing four and four in the league nine and4 overall where are they now though because I IIA malava was a five-star can't miss all these things and you look at that frame you look at that arm and he looks every bit of the part not only from the Chattanooga game but that Iowa game which I think maybe rekindled some things for the for the orange and white yeah I think and I like Joe um but I don't know that Joe I think Joe was built for the quarterback part of the job physically I don't know that Joe was built for the CEO part of the job you if that makes any sense I'm I'm not saying he's not smart he's he's plenty smart um what I'm saying is uh I'm saying that he just there's more to it's like being a head football coach you know the story that MC Brown tells about going to Texas and he's walking to practice and the helicopter lands to Tak him to the governor's wife's birthday party you know some guys are built for that some guys aren't and I don't know that Joe Milton was built for all of that Nico is I mean the everything I've what the conversations I've had with him the convers had with the coaches all that this is not none of that phases him now I say that after one week I say that two games but but I really believe that and so that's a difference the vi the vibe check is it's good last year didn't feel that way I was at the I was at the season opener Virginia Nashville they played Virginia yeah it's Virginia but but it was was like that when I was in school there really really long time ago it's just how they are and so um yes now they think they're going to win the national championship I I I have been surprised and maybe it's just because people got burned last year I've been surprised that in all the preseason polls and the big stack of magazines we all have Tennessee's hovered around 16 and I believe like State I believed they should have received a lot more credit or a lot more do about they could crash the party because the reality is Georgia is gonna lose at least one game I think they might lose two their schedule's awful awful look at that schedule and and you can do that and still win the N Championship but that schedule and it's not even it's not even about it's not even about I think I think you broke up yeah it's not even about the teams that are ranked it's about when they play the team going to Kentucky you think you really think they're going to lose two football games I'm saying they could I think they're definitely going to lose one look at their schedule I can see one I can see one gotta go to Kentucky got Auburn week the first week of October as opposed to the end of the year got Tennessee sitting there in the middle of November I'm I'm and and and those aren't those aren't the games everyone's talking about yeah look at it I'm telling you the schedule is awful okay hey uh don't know if you know this uh Georgia 46-0 against teams not named Alabama since the start of 2021 yeah I I appreciate that but they've never had a schedule like this the other guys is working with you now the the only guy who's beating him he's your colleague now's your guy he's your guy your they they've never had a schedule like the one they have this year and it's not just about the teams that are ranked it's about the Auburn and the Kies and where they're tucked into that schedule at really really not easy times and I'm not saying they lose those games but I'm saying you end up with a hell of a battle they should have lost Auburn a year ago you end up with a hell of a battle with Kentucky or a hell of a battle with auburn and then your reward is you got Texas next or you got Georgia or you got uh you know um Alabama next I'm just telling you if if they run if they run this schedule undefeated then they should get a buy into the round of four they should get two buys because it's because this was awful West Coast Conference style basketball yeah Gonzaga no no you just go to final forward so chileo and I were talking about this yesterday I think Tennessee is a fascin the Tennessee NC State game is a fascinating look into how we talk about these things you talk about week one overreactions I thought one of the bigger overreactions was that the ACC might be a one bid college football playoff conference I think your colleague Heather Den had written that blurb on espn.com I get it it's week one over reactions it's what we do the acc's been battling this perception issue but jilo kind of stumbled into a Galaxy brain take yesterday in real time it was great where it's like if NC State beats Tennessee and Tennessee doesn't necessarily have the year that everybody expects him to have it'll be held against Cy State very similar to how Florida State and LSU played out over the course of a season last year right suddenly beating LSU wasn't as a big a deal as people made it out to be on the flip side though A Team like Tennessee a team like Kentucky that plays Louisville who should be good this year those will be viewed as good wins for those SEC programs as they to bolster their claim to be an at large team in the college football playoff do you kind of see it that way too do you see that perception issue or are we just making a big deal out of this you know because because it's early no I mean the story I always tell I think I told at thee Davis this week on the college game day podcast the story I always tell is and you guys probably both there ACC kickoff at Pinehurst right and when John sword was at the height of his powers which by the way I'm tired of him getting banged on all the time the deal he signed was the greatest deal any went ever signed when he signed it it was yeah but but when Swafford uh called to right off the top rope first question you know Big East is gonna eat the ACC and and Swafford just kind of laugh like he did and he like he does and he said if we take care of our business in the cross conference games week one and rivalry weekend and we win our bowl games all of this goes away and you know and within six months ACC had rated the Big East Florida state was play in Rose Bowl for a national championship and he's right he was right immediately and and and so yeah that's just it I mean just but but there's no question that the ACC does not receive the passes that other conferences do SEC had an awful week one just they just did it was a bad week one um I was at to Florida uh Miami game that was that was a that was a that was that was that was a statement game for for two teams one one really good one really bad and so so yeah the ACC doesn't get the benefit of the doubt that everyone El the other three do and it's just that's not fair it's how it is I still have I've been I've been you the look you guys just gave me about Georgia is the look that I have been getting everywhere else in the world when I'm on these things and they say give us a sleeper playoff pick and I go NC State and because no one thinks about him I said listen it is what it is doran's been there as long as he is Mcall is who he is you know the SCH is what it is if they take and even if they if they just have a good showing in Charlotte against the team that I believe will be ranked all year in Tennessee then that's not gonna be held against them when they get to the end of the year and so that's a really long way of saying um Heather's my sister she is I text with her all the time we text first day of school and her kids go to school my daughter goes to school but the reality is I still think it's two- Team league like I think I think they get two teams in um but Florida state has completely blown everything apart um I think Miami has the chance to be really good I don't have a lot of Mario chryst ball confidence I have a lot of Cam Ward confidence I don't have any Mario crystal ball confidence and so it's still Miami man I mean it's still they're Texas right and they haven't done anything in a long time and until they do it I'm not gonna believe and so you and and Florida's awful so I don't know that what they did on Saturday was a playoff statement as much as it was them just announcing all right here I am but Florida State changes everything because you know they're not not going to playoff it's done it's over and so um so now who watch them win the league yeah weird it's gonna be weird what's weird about Florida State Ryan is because the way their schedule plays out they're going to be in last place of the ACC for a couple of weeks yeah it's gonna take him a while to climb out of that which is funny but it might still be there for him but wouldn't it would it so it's the four highest ranked Conference champions M oh God the four highest ranked Conference champions get to buy mhm there's no and there's no it's not highest it's not the power four Champions it's not the whatever it's the highest four ranked conference Champion so if if Florida State now pulls it out of their hat and they win the ACC and they're ranked 24th and you know give me one and then 14th they're in yeah and so so so it's it's it's it would be the most hash goac thing ever if Florida State now with two conference losses somehow manages to to it would be it'd be amazing and and then they'll win their lawsuit and they'll no play Colorado in the Big 12 they a they ain't winning the lawsuit I mean come on now they sign that they signed that deal twice come on now any judge is gonna look at that going so now suddenly it's not good after you signed it twice after you said the greatest deal effort you think about you think about when everybody was here in Charlotte last thank you guys for having me on so uh I got to imagine Mr defense was happy with the way the defense played against Elon uh Duke's Manny Diaz to open up the season it was um it was exciting to see I will tell you from all the times in my career when I've gone to a new school and and and you know Taken part of of installing the scheme uh it normally takes you know five to six weeks for the guys to really trust it and let it go and to see the the tfls and the sacks like my my first game in Penn State I'm not sure we had a Tacker for loss um and I I was in in a very sad State um to watch to watch us play that first game kind of showed what makes these kids so special they they they really are coachable and they really want to do it the way you coach them and uh to their credit they didn't do everything right but what they did do is they went and um they didn't sit around they attacked and um and and I and now I think they see the results and not that you'll get those numbers every week but they understand how you know how the defense is designed yeah giving up 140 yards that's that's kind of hard to do in 19 you know 74 let alone 2024 so well done there when you look at go back and look at it uh obviously Vincent Anthony had a pair of sacks for you but was there someone else or was it Vincent himself who who you thought had a really good game are are you one of those guys he tried to find like the esoteric one like no actually the guy who set all the screens that's the guy basketball coaches love to do that you know or were you like no dude Vincent had two sacks man he was really good no actually it was important for Vincent to have two sacks because um we felt like watching him develop all offseason that he could be a guy that could really have a big year Force and and Wes Williams you know I think also had a sack um and we love Wes you know but really watching VJ develop in the scheme uh over the last eight months I wasn't surprised to see what happened um you never know you can always play great and not get rewarded with the numbers on defense but probably the basketball coach answer that you were joking about is that what I'm just happy about is that our tfls and our were spread out over so many people um that has actually been a characteristic of this defense over the years it's not just one guy um it sort of Everybody Eats and when you have that it's it's good for morale it's good for um Everybody understand that if everyone just does their job we what we kind of say is the ball finds you you know if you're just where you're supposed to be stationed um in the scheme and the ball finds you tackle it you know and if you do it'll probably behind the line scrimmage and that's normally a good thing for us a little bit bit more on the Elon game before we get into this week's opponent Northwestern Friday night you guys go up to Northwestern I'm sure you've already seen the pictures of the stadium so I'm sure you're looking forward to that but uh I thought Malik Murphy obviously a lot of attention on him coming from Texas obviously that's a high profile get for you guys but he played well you know I don't I don't know if people wanted like you know fireworks and and lollipops and everything else but 291 yards there was the one interception but I thought for the most part you probably did what you wanted him to do yeah it worked if we're no big no big dealing 290 yards passing or what whatever you said it was I mean that that means we've got a pretty good standard um sure no I I thought the best part was Malik was in control the whole night um even on the sideline um when we weren't scoring early um you know never you know never got just out of his flow and out of his game uh watching the film I mean there's a lot of meet on that bone we we were inches away from some really really big plays and and we consider those layups you know Elon gave us some throws down the field and and if you give to us we're going to take him and you know he he put the ball pretty much right there a few times we could have made some tougher catches I think to help us and help him as well but um I thought in the intermediate game I mean he was at guys in the face mask I mean his his accuracy was really really outstanding so for game one uh in this system I was really proud of the way that he played Manny Diaz joining us on the heaster Automotive Group hotline Northwestern is the opponent that's back at the Big 10 just just like that one game and and we're already uh already game planning for a team that you've seen before right easy easy peasy right yeah well it's interesting we played Northwestern the last two years at Penn State and then of course Duke played Northwestern the last two years but one of the things we had to explain to our guys is this is a very different team mentality wise than you know this team limped out of Duke a year ago one and two and losers out of 13 out of 15 and since that day they're eight and3 uh we went and then one of those losses was to us at Penn State two weeks later since that day they're seven- two theyve won seven out of nine they' won five in a row so they have flipped the switch and they have learned how to win games specifically they've learned how to win close games they're six and one in one possession games um in that time frame so um expect it to be exactly that way you know what I mean and so you got to hold your nerve you got to be patient and you have to understand the plays that it's gonna that's going to come down to more than likely in the last four minutes one thing I've always been curious about with Duke and in all the years that Joe and I have been here uh the constant about Duke is offensive and defensive line play um it's just a byproduct of where Duke is academically uh the kids that you recruit small private school versus a large school all those kinds of things and and given your various stops and going up against a big 10 team that understands the what they have to do in that conference where do you see Duke's line at this point and and what either needs work or or the differences of what you working with now at Duke versus what you were working with at Penn State and other stops we'll find out right I mean this will be a great challenge which is why you schedule these games and and and what The Season's about I mean you find out where you're at and then you have a chance to improve it and get better um you know we had to get we lost a lot of old guys Duke lost a lot of older guys off off of both lines of scrimmage a year ago um and luckily through the portal we do have the ability to to we ability to get old again you know certainly on the offensive line uh I think we brought in 152 starts on the offensive line um maybe not all at the ACC level but but um you know but even a guy like brunoo who was at UCLA starting at left tackle for them that now starts for us at left tackle so you didn't replace a senior with a freshman or a true sophomore or something like that same thing bringing a guy like Kendy Charles from Liberty on our defensive line that really helped with some of the departures we had but it'll be a heck of a challenge Northwestern strength of their team for sure is their defensive line and we got to run the ball better than we ran it a week ago now Elon had a lot to say of that they blitzed a lot and put a lot of guys around our Run game which opened up a lot of the Yards down the field but um northwestern's the opposite they're going to keep their their secondary back they're going to force you to grind it down the field um and last going to say is I really feel like having played against Duke a lot in the AC ACC Through The Years you know Cut's best teams had outstanding offensive lines and and defensive lines as well so I do think this school in our first cycle here I do think you can attract uh o linman and D linan um that are drawn to what Duke is on and off the field and and and be the foundation of your football team there's a lot of talk this week about you know what the ACC didn't do out of the league I haven't heard much talk about Carolina beating Minnesota though and now you have a chance to add to that with a win I think the Big 10 only had one loss last week and it was Minnesota's lost to Carolina so do you kind of I know it's new for you and and you know you're worried about Duke primarily but do you look at this as a chance to to kind of chalk one up for the ACC in these type of matchups where you're taking on the Big 10 of yeah of course I mean these games are important I mean I I I think to your point everybody overblows The Narrative of small sample size I mean the NFL starts this weekend if the AFC West you know went 3 and0 against the NFC Central this weekend people wouldn't freak out and and you know and have you know a whole segment on on first take about it but that's what we that's what we do in colge ball um and and what we don't know is we just don't know you know it's like we said who knows how good Jordan Tech is right who knows how good Boston College is they look pretty damn good you know and um I I I go back to sitting on my couch and State College or um in College Station sorry State College a year ago watching Duke B Clemson and was that because Clemson wasn't any good or was that because Duke had a hell of a team you know Duke looked like a really good team to me uh that night and they guess what they were a really good team so you know it's always how we want to write the headline and how we want to write the stories um but this is why we play the games right it's unpredictable and guess what in this era of of transfer portal and nil and all stuff it's going to become more unpredictable and we act surprised we completely like shaken you know kick the antill and then we're stunned at the ants running all over the place you know you know I'll be Dan you know like look at all what happening that's that's that's the beauty of college football we do love to engage in some uh some overreactions and and those kinds of things although I am curious I love picking your brain on this stuff because speaking of the overreactions we saw this happen at Florida State and we've seen it happen at Clemson on the Florida state side it's well this is what happens when all you do is rely on transfers and then over on the Clemson side it's like well they don't take any transfers well which one is it and I get that it's all a balance and you you referenced it in what you're trying to do with Duke and kind of pick your spots um and I now that you're the head coach of this how do you view that is it is it development is it uh finding who your guys are having them come through your system and then finding places to augment what you already have through the transfer portal like just I feel like everybody's kind of overreacting one way or the other in how the transfer portal works for any individual team funny you point that I actually had a laugh at that earlier today you can almost put two headlines side by side that one team you know is getting it wrong because they're doing one and and then the the exact opposite right we the very we have a very distinct way we we have to do it here at Duke we we we have to be a developmental program but that we but our superpower is who this school attracts right um and in the era of of you know basically unfettered free agency the young men and their families who who are capable of getting into Duke and want to come to Duke usually want to graduate from duke so we have the ability where we can say hey if they come here we're going to have these guys you know there's a really good chance we're have for four years and can really develop them um in the meantime we can supplement that in the portal uh we are a very attractive destination for people who want to graduate from many of our prestigious grad programs certainly our business school is is a big sell so you know we're able to add guys from from Ivy Leagues who have a fifth year you know schools like holy cross Lafayette you know again when you add a guard who's 22 23 years old and has 34 career starts that's going to mean something more so than adding you know again replacing a senior with a r freshman who's and has never been you know step foot in a college football game so we have we have the ability to do it both ways but we will always you know the foundation of our program will always be through our high school recruiting yeah it's a little different than your counterparts over in the basketball office where you can get a 17year old and build around him you know everything is in basketball in basketball 17y old can really change the game in football it's not really the case though is it no that's always been the difference between the two sports yeah one of the guys you got out of the portal I I apologize coach I would have asked asked you about this at uh the kickoff I you there's no way for you to know this New Mexico state's one of my favorite teams when I saw Diego Pavia at Vanderbilt beating Virginia Tech I'm like now where do I know that NE the Mexico state was really good last year you have the running back in Star Thomas tell us a little bit about him because I I I know he got some carries in the last game but that feels like a pretty good little piece there obviously everyone wants to talk about Malik but Stars got a chance to really help you this year doesn't he yeah same example you know we lost age right we had a running back transfer and so you're going to replace that with with very very inexperienced players um we we we we just happen to be um thin in that room anyway and that you know every every play in that room ends with a collision right pass blocking or getting tackled to be able to get a guy of stars um caliber was a big get for us um watched him you know running playing with New Mexico State um some really really big runs against Auburn last year in that matchup so we felt like he was a guy that uh could really add something to us and and and he's done it and and and again when you talk about age at running back it's not just when they have the ball in their hands it's how they play without the ball pass protection understanding Blitz pickup
