2024 US Open Tennis: Sinner and Medvedev Impress

[Music] welcome to the Primo musings [Music] podcast good morning this is Shri here with the quick update on the third rounds that happened yesterday in the US Open uh tennis at uh in New York so um the question today was whether uh we will get the third upset in a row at the US Open with alarz and jok witch losing uh there was a lot of other players on tap yesterday with CER and meddev uh who played later in the night in Arthur Ash so the question was can the young upstarts uh create another upat in the US Open it so happened they could not uh both meddev and siner had very impressive wi Med would have played at the Arash Stadium against u kabo a young uh 22-year-old rising star from Italy well he played really well I mean the score is not indicative of how good he played there were some excellent shots it came down to one or two shots and he lost in straight sets but sometimes the score does not reflect the play on the court uh he was really he energized the crowd uh he had a lop shot in the third set which was just incredible after like a 15 shot rally Drew medb in pretty much both the players were playing on the Baseline but um there was one time he with a nice drop shot he brought medv in and hit like this backand lob over meddev unfortunately he lost the next three points to lose but the lose the game but it just showed like how good he was playing yesterday similarly on the earlier in the day uh you had CER who just really impressive o over o Connell and he just breathes through 61 64 62 slowly and surely you could see the way the crowd is uh reacting to him with all the controversy surrounding him but uh he definitely has a crowd support and he was pretty impressive in the way he was very clinical in his approach with his serving with his shot making abilities um so sinner goes through right now he should be considered the favorite along with medv uh because both of them have won Grand Slams before with medv actually winning it three years ago the alcaras killer uh vany Zan schul from Netherlands ran into Jake Draper I think it was U the high on couple of days back but then Draper who's I mean who's ranked 25 and again Draper is someone who's known he's actually beaten alros um in the previous tournaments and uh Draper was just too good he ran to a 30-0 lead never gave uh his opponent any chance to come back and then uh went through 63 64 62 um so that's where we are with and then from an American standpoint uh you had Tommy Paul that was a great game and I think he played against Dio from Canada should have been an easy victory for him I mean early in the first set he was up 5-4 serving for the set then 65 sing for the set both times he got broken but he just looked a little off I me his shots were uh I think he was going too much for it sometimes and he just uh went long each and every time and I mean Dio played well give him credit but this was the game Tommy Paul should have won pretty easily in straight sets but it went to the fourth set and then Tommy still had to work his work hard uh in the um final tiebreaker I mean was close uh initially but then Tommy was just um too good I mean once he went to a 61 lead um then gave up two points but he was he managed to wrap up that match pretty easily uh and then today who do we have today is probably one of the best you're going to see uh right from 12:00 p.m. start all the way to like uh later in the night where you have the Marquee matchup of T TFO who took out Bel Shelton and poin who took out Joe but then you have rublev dimra match up at 12 pretty happy at the way rublev slowly but surely I mean here is his chance I mean he's always been someone who gets to the quarterfinals but just doesn't go get over the hump maybe this is this year we'll see but Dimitra is playing as good as he can and he's already ranked under 10 and uh he's had some big wins this year especially in Miami against al CRZ uh then you have very good story for rude I me rude won a very tough match um and then again Shang and he gets to play Taylor Fritz so that would be a very good match up eight Wass a 12 matchup um Roode has been there before I mean he's gone to the final of the US Open he's playing with a lot of confidence and um happy to see the way he's playing but I think Fritz is playing really good and I wouldn't be surprised if Fritz actually wins and then we get to Nakashima who's going to be playing against Zera because Nakashima took out as we know another Italian M and he's playing against Zev and this is zev's again this is wide open for him as well and uh and he could be playing uh he's playing at a very good high ability right now and you know especially after losing the French Open to ALR um every match I saw this time he's been playing excellent he's he's probably one of the dark horses to to who could win it I mean of course we are talking about Sin medev but don't count z um and then as I mentioned TFO playing against poin at 7 o'clock the interesting thing here that you're going to see is the fact that uh you could have three Americans moving on to the quarterfinals how great that would be if Nakashima Fritz and tifo uh pull those victories um really excited about that part um and then on the women's side of things um shatek was just incredible uh beating uh I think 2021 French Open finalist prob chova 64 62 uh she just breeed through it um there was no issues for her she was on point ran to a very quick 30-0 lead and she never looked back then what a great story again vaki um she continues a run against poet and uh she won pretty easily 63 and 62 I'm so excited to see how she's going she's probably one of the ambassadors of the sport excellent player excellent off the court uh I'm really rooting for uh vaki to move forward and other winners include pigula from an American standpoint um I did watch some of it I mean she was uh it was close in the first set but uh pigula was just much better and then paulini uh also won against uh Putin SAA and 6364 and Pini along with Coco go is the only player on the women's side to have made uh the fourth round in all four grand slams this year that's an incredible stat considering you had like Sabal Lenas and shatex and reina's there and then um so only two players and that's actually incredible so who do we have today on the women's side um really look forward to see Bosa wfy at 11:00 a.m. happy for Bosa I mean she's been someone who's not made that Mark and I am happy to see her play but the big matchup is going to be with Coco golf against Navaro uh really looking forward to that that's at 2:30 p.m today depending on the other matches in arth rash Stadium I think there's a men's match before that um and then you have on the Louis Armstrong Stadium you have sabalenka playing Mertens uh I think I do favor sabalenka I mean she played literally yesterday and then she's playing again today she started almost past midnight after the joke witch match and then another great story from China Quinn win then playing against Donna wi so uh really good in fact one of the stats I saw is that the three men's um I would say in the Paris Olympics the medalists in the Paris Olympics all are out uh you had jit alcaras and musi so and in the women's side they're all here uh so that's pretty impressive as it is so let's see uh if um if three Americans in the uh men's can move forward to the quarterfinals and similarly with if coko go can make it to the next round as well um so awesome matches on tap today and looking forward to
