Tyreek Hill: Could've handled traffic stop better, still wants officer fired | LiveNOW from FOX

welcome back here to live. Now from Fox. I'm Andrew craft. We are nearing the bottom of the hour here we are. anticipating. uh, not the best shot, just yet. That is a live picture there. Uh, in Tucson Arizona. Uh, we are told uh that the second gentleman Doug mhof will be addressing. Harris walls supporters in the Battleground state of Arizona of course you know former president Donald Trump uh have uh, about a 2-hour long. campaign rally there in 2, as well today. So it's like all eyes on these Battleground States, Arizona. is 1 of them in the meantime here, we want to follow up on a story that we brought you on Monday night. Of course you've seen the video. by now of Miami Dolphins, ride receiver. Tyreek Hill and his run-in with law enforcement. this traffic stopped this alteration. uh that people. have been talking about and describing uh well you know that he is going to be back on the field tonight. facing off against the Buffalo Bills. Uh, yes, the very day that this all transpired. Uh, he played as well. uh, against the Jaguars in Miami, we have a gorgeous. nighttime Skyline View their, uh over at Miami. So we're following up like I said, on this story, Uh and we've heard from Tyreek Hill. He's been speaking now. After he was detained, Sunday morning for speeding just before the team's game against the Jaguars there. in Miami. And remember, police released by cam footage, Showing him getting handcuffed and placed face down on this street. It was released on Monday the day after the altercation. uh Hill has indicated the officers were excessive and has even called for 1 officer to be fired. Now, we know 1 officer involved in this has been placed on paid administrative, leave the NFL star also admitted this week. that he could have handled the traffic stop differently Now we want to get into this. a little bit more joining us to talk more about this. uh is Miami. Herald, cops reporter. Devin sit, he joins reporter, Um, Devon thanks for being with us here, I would imagine that this has been quite a busy week for you because the Miami Police Department. has put out numerous statements trying to get ahead of this. explain. where they're coming from. talk about the invest. steps that they have taken. so far, How are they doing with that effort? so, Miami Police Department. uh, was very forthcoming. Uh, when this incident occurred, uh, almost immediately after the had heard about it and seen uh, kind of the giant public uh, backlash to this. They were on top of this. They put the officer, uh, Danny Torres on administrative Duty fairly quickly. Um, after the video had come out, for them to run their own internal Affairs investigation. uh, to figure out kind of what. happened? What went wrong. Uh, what could have been done better? and that process is, is still going on. um, right now and he's still on administrative duties. Uh, Mr. Torres. has gotten his own attorney. Um, that is trying to do what he can to get him back onto the force Basically, back on the job. And as you had said, uh, Tyreek and his attorneys uh, in the inverse are seeking every legal option they can. uh, in the situation because I know Tyreek spoke to the media yesterday. and even though he said there is some things that he could have done better, he still wants to see this officer gone fired. um because as he had said in a previous press conference that what if it wasn't him what if he wasn't Tyreek Hill, right? You know, how could have this, uh Gone and, in Miami here, it's been uh, very uh, there's been a lot of reactions everywhere from residents to politicians, I know our mayor. uh, had some very Choice words about the officer's conduct. and that they needs to be investigated and done better. and locally. Here we have a sheriff's race coming up for the first time ever, in our history. and both can Also. uh, criticizing the officer saying that things need to be done on both sides. Republican and Democrat. Um, things need to be done here. You know, Devin I wanted to ask as well. Let's go back even further. Uh, and have you seen the police report that was filed? Um, what was he pulled over for? What was the initial infraction? so, the citations he has is for careless driving and a seat belt violation. Okay? Um, it was not for speeding, uh, speeding is mentioned in his citations. It was off of sight. uh, the officer had said, he had, thinks that he was going 60 miles per hour. But that was not. what the violation was for. That's what kind of the beginning. you hear him talking about speeding. And here, I'm talking about seat belt. It's because that was what the actual citation was for. and actually, the officer just when you guys watch the video officer Torres, uh, is the officer that opens his door and kind of pulls him from the car that is Officer Torres. whose body cam are we looking at? Is that officer Torres? Is it his body cam No, that is not his body cam, we are unsure at this moment which officer this is. that is knocking on the window but it is the 1 that pulls him out of the car is Officer Torres. Torres was the Exactly Administrative Duty. Um, you all spoken out, have we heard from him? Through his lawyers, he yes. And his lawyers have said that they are doing everything they can to uh helping this process. be forthcoming. But also to get him back. on duty, uh, to get him back on the streets, doing his job. That's him right there in the video. pulling him into the ground. as well. I wanted to ask too because um other Miami Dolphins players, you know, his teammates were somewhat involved in this entire episode. What is the nature of that? Uh, was anyone else in the car with Tyreek Hill? or did people come in afterward? as they saw? What was transpiring? uh no 1 was in the car with him. uh, to our knowledge 2 of his teammates uh had come in after this kind of occurred after the arrest. Uh, both trying to see what was going on. Was Tyreek. Okay? Um, and both of them were basically ordered by police. to leave. uh, 1 of them by Officer Torres. Uh, and another officer basically being yelled at to leave the scene. uh, because they were, you know, in in their words, they were impeding on the investigation. that was taking place. and Torres. Also had put, um, 1 of those 1 of those players in, in handcuffs as well. It wasn't just Tyreek that day. That was in handcuffs. Okay, wow. Um, and we have gotten and a lengthy statement. This came out on Monday from the Miami Dolphins, organization. uh, the first paragraph of that statement goes on at length, about what you were just describing. Uh, it wasn't just Tyreek Hill, that was caught up into this, They say we're saddened by the overly aggressive and violent conduct directed towards Tyreek Hill. Kelly, Campbell and Janu Smith by police officers before yesterday's game it is both maddening and heartbreaking to watch the very people, we trust to protect our community. use, such unnecessary force, and hostility, towards these players they say it is also a reminder that not every situation, like this ends in peace. as we are grateful, this 1 did, What if I wasn't Tyreek Hill? is a question that will carry with resounding impact their the first paragraph of that statement the Dolphins. up against the bills tonight there in Miami. Um, and you're down on the ground In Miami Is this still in the atmosphere? are dolphins, fans talking about this. Still our community. Activist leaders, just everyday residents, Still talking about this. I can tell you that activist leaders are definitely having conversations about this still, uh, as is the case. and a lot of these police interactions. Um, I think it's important to remember that uh, Tyreek Hill isn't the only 1. that has to deal with these kind of 10, uh, like tenuous police. officer interactions we've had 1 recently um, this week with a police involved shooting and City of Miami. Um, these things are happening all the time. uh, and activists are constantly trying to to be on the front ground and make change. And the good thing is here, is that Miami day. Police Department is the department. that is very open to listening to the community making changes very quickly. and trying to find uh how to fix it. And at the end of the day, Devon is there an element is there an element of this story is this also in the atmosphere in Miami that are people essentially saying Tyreek Hill should have just complied? I think. uh, you could definitely have people in these situations that make that argument. Uh, it doesn't matter what the video shows or what the end of the report is, you will always have people. on both sides saying that sure 1 individual should have done something and another individual should have done something I think in this case. you can go on any social media. video that involves Tyreek and you'll have many people saying that. Tyreek should have been calmer But at the same time, you'll have people saying that the officer shouldn't have acted that way. I think these things just ignite a lot of opinions on on both sides on what should be done anti. did say yesterday that he should have done things differently, but at the end of the day, he should not have. been treated that way by an officer sure. Um, what else is? going on in this story for you, as you track down the leads, what more do you need to know what questions? Do you still have? um, we are actively trying to find out more about officer Torres and other officers at the scene. Kind of their history, okay? Officer for us is a 27-year veteran at the Miami Dade Police Department. That is a very long time to be on the force. So we're trying to see what has he done? What has he done on the Force officer? Has he been? Has there been other situations has there not been? That's really what we're trying to get at the grain of because a lot of the times in my career at the Harold dealing with situations like this it's kind of a where there's smoke. There's fire. So we just want to make sure that there isn't fire in this case. And if there is we'll find it. Yeah, I mean 1 of mine which is somewhat impossible to answer uh because these situations and altercations are so fast moving but these 2 officers, they pull over Tyreek Hill. uh more Dolphins players. Come to assist or or see what's going on here. You know, in the back of these officers Minds, did they pause, did they? acknowledged it all? Did they have the wherewithal? to maybe say, Are these Dolphins players or at least is this Tyreek Hill? I'm not saying they would know that. in the moment here, but you have to imagine if you're a huge sports fan in Miami, and you've been in Miami for so long that you would know who these figures these very important sports figures are, that went through my mind. I think that would be impossible to answer. I don't know if it went through yours. um, 1 of the officers actually on the body. cam video did mention that Tyreek is a star of the Miami Dolphins. during the arrest He had said that. So at least 1 of the officers was aware uh, of who Tyreek Hill was. Um, but I think at the end of the day many citizens can agree that. it shouldn't matter. if he's Reco it shouldn't matter if he's a Dolphins player, it should be. That's a citizen that we have to, you know, treat with respect. Um, uh and deal with uh use Force if necessary. But only, if necessary honestly. So, sure. All right. Devin too with the Miami Herald.
