Greg I guess let's just begin with when you heard the news at first I'm sure it was uh stunning to you stunning and yeah it it was not confirmed when I first heard this morning uh so you're hoping that something changes but uh as the morning went on it became evident that the tragedy was true the rumor was true and you know you immediately just your thoughts go right to their family they're such a close family um uh and I can't imagine how they're feeling now I mean we all feel a huge loss they were specials kids and we're so fortunate to have had them in our lives at all but now for for their family it's just Unthinkable when did you first meet them was it on a recruiting visit it was uh you know we they were they were committed to it Northeastern before we uh had ever seen them you know they were young and you heard Whispers coming out that you know this kid is special and his brother's very good as well and then when you actually get eyes on him you're like wow they they are truly special so then um when my coach York DED when coach Cronin left Northeastern uh we had them immediately and it was it was clear the tightness uh between them the bond between them because they were going to school together there was no not even a thought about uh splitting up so um we were fortunate to have room and and fortunate to to persuade them to come uh you know our our team at that time was some kids that they knew and and made a good push to bring them both here and I think it happened in probably August Johnny shows up freshman year pushes us over the edge to win that National Championship 2012 and he gets the the game clinching goal in spectacular fashion to boot so um you know at that time we were for so fortunate that how it turned out uh but then when you met them you you really wanted them ability aside you really wanted them on your team just because of the people they were and you knew uh the intangibles that they would bring to the locker room and did I reading stories on them this morning was it that Johnny basically said to Matthew where do you want to go CU he was a little younger that is the rumor yeah uh I'm glad Maddie chose here um but yeah I think uh yeah the only thing that was 100% sure is that they were going to come together or go to school together and whether it was Maddie or Johnny or both of them we were just really lucky and and blessed that they came here and we know Matthew was successful great hockey player Johnny was obviously special what's it like for you explain to the the people out there of seeing somebody 5'8 and 140 lb and seeing somebody 5'8 and 140 lbs in skates out on a hockey rank yeah I guess because we're on the inside you can truly appreciate the genius that they had uh both of them um to be able to not only navigate a game and and not get killed but to put to Excel and make plays all over the place I remember going to Johnny's first game in Boston Garden when he was with Calgary and we were in the front row and there were car crashes everywhere um and you thought if Johnny gets in one of those it's not going to end well but he never did you know he could he could outthink or out uh anticipate what was going to happen and again not only survive but Excel uh it's truly incredible Jimmy Montgomery told a story that Johnny had to go to the hospital because he had too much nality in him I understand he was a sweet tooth guy he was a sweet tooth guy yeah uh yeah you would never say that his diet was model to follow but uh I guess you know that's what it took for him uh to bring out his Brilliance so it was funny I mean the the stories are endless about uh Johnny with food and like whether he's pulling the crust off his bread or or not eating you know what we would consider maybe a a really special meal because it he just liked his what he liked and it was pretty plain stuff but it worked for him lastly and unfortunately I would think this puts him perspective into perspective what you do uh the wins and the losses and in in life lessons for your kids yes it does exactly and you have to remind you know we get reminded painfully sometimes like now that um yeah I as much as we push and try to win that that's really not uh the most important thing in the big picture and it's the relationships you have and the just the camaraderie that you have and where when you're part of a team you know you get that bond between people and um it's a special bond that we all cherish and then when something like this happens you get reminded of how fragile it can be um so you have to appreciate the time you have with those special people and that Bond you have
