I like most of the world was hurt and confused about what was taking place around people I felt as if my life had fallen asleep on the bus and I'd miss the correct stop so just like Shakespeare when faced with a little change in a virus I turned to art finishing some sketches I had scheduled a zoom call with my professors it was the season I had a pretty little concept with pretty little photos and pretty little dresses though the collection was unnamed at this point I had thought of the perfect line to end it I want beautiful little women to walk down the runway covered in a dusting of the last spring snow needless to say my mentors were not impressed commenting Rachel this is all nice and well but it looks nothing like you it's a design it would look more of a Rachel Davis design the strong women ready and armed to Take On The World in front of them women who have responded to their trauma and are ready to move forward Victorious out of their scars and they were right thus my collection Virago was born ago is defined as a strong Brave warrior-like woman a woman who demonstrates exemplary and heroic qualities thus this collection is frago women inspired by the book Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and the designs of Alexander McQueen this collection is about the woman who did everything they could to survive in a post-2020 world these little women were once innocent creatures of the patriarchy now they are awake and arm themselves with more than just their lipstick these little women scream for their sisters who fight for what they know to be right now because this is the closest I'll ever get to a Grammy speech I'd like to take a moment to thank a few people first I want to say it's an honor to be nominated let alone win I want to thank my producers my mom and my dad who has helped me through life so much and I cannot thank you enough you guys are my favorite parents definitely a top two I want to thank my mentors Dr Hudgins Dr Mack Dr Venezuela Dr reality it has a deeper meaning this collection is inspired by a painting called migrants by songbong Shea trees and women have one important thing in common we are indispensable to be indispensable means to be absolutely necessary rising up from the ground Standing Tall and flourishing into the great beautiful women we are bring oxygen into our lungs just as women do our presence of this world is necessary for human life I want it to be kind of like a women empowerment collection where women can wear these clothes to work to dinner anywhere where she wants to feel empowered and command a being confident myself because like confidence is key and that's my biggest go-to is it's like having confidence and make sure like I feel good about what I'm making and what I'm doing so I want others to feel very comfortable confident and very humble and actually love what they're making and love what they're doing for me life my concept of what I'm doing is based off the Hall of Renaissance very gliss and Glam like just just like how how us as black people invented like jazz and music from from the elephant's Journal Duke Ellington Cab Calloway and all those like fashionable folds back then the the reason I came up with that design because I was watching the movie Harlem Nights with Eddie Murphy Richard Pryor and red fox and how that hunt a lot like the whole concept of it's CMA inspired it gives like an exclusive look on how some of them would dress for uh the award show a lot of my collection is involving a lot of sequins I wanted to go crazy bold with the CMAs they're more extravagant clothes so I wanted to push myself a little farther with different fabric that I'm not used to using so I wanted to push myself with the sequins chiffon satin anything like that just basically I wanted to go out this semester with a bang I wanted to be able to finish strong [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you collection name is modern replay some of the Inspirations were a lot of fit and flare a little bit of a course set fit to it as well there's a lot of garments in the back of the outfits and also being able to mix and match it between the outfits was something that I kind of wanted to have so you can grab a little bit of one clothing and then pair it with the other I like a lot of neutral colors so that's something that I draw a lot to I also like to be a little bit more of the streetwear kind of aspect but also make it a lot girlier you can still see a little bit of me but I did step out of my comfort zone by creating other stuff that maybe I wouldn't necessarily wear for this collection so I think that that would be something that I would like them to take from foreign [Music] [Music] inspired by the 90s and early 2000s just because that's my own like personal aesthetic I want this collection to be about me um so I took a lot of like the baggy like Silhouettes and like the cutouts and all of like the Staples like the mini skirt um from that time period And I put my own little spin on it so I want others to draw on just the idea of imperfection it's like still learning as a designer and I'm still grown and I'm still like working on my craft so like it's okay to not be um where you feel like you should be at but as long as like you believe in yourself and you know there's always room for improvement nobody's perfect so thank you to all of my like family and friends who have been there to like support me through the process because it has been a hard one just mentally collection I really wanted people to understand that I just want to create art that is wearable and relatable and moves you in some kind of way and I hope that that is shown in this collection and once in the future my collection is based off of the modern day woman I really wanted to incorporate how Fierce and bold women are nowadays I did that by honing in on women's Silhouettes and lines and shapes what I want people to feel in my collection is how much I love being a Creator and an artist I love empowering women and that you can be powerful and sexy in more than one way and I try to show designer and so I really thought about contrast like Darkness to light it goes from being very apocalyptic into new life being very messy distressed grungy into this idea that there is New Life found in it by the time that the end of the collection I wanted to make it you know fit within the context of my life so for me it is Jesus Christ that's my identity is placed in and he's brought me out of
