Jim Harbaugh On 2024 Captains & Heinicke Trade | LA Chargers

hello everybody I got an announcement if I could um we've uh elected captains for the 20 2024 Los Angeles Chargers football team and uh we have three on offense three on defense um Justin Herbert Bradley Boseman rashan Slater uh on defense we have Derwin James Jr khil Mack and Denzel Perryman what do you like about that group um I love that group um I love the uh the the voting by the by the players was uh was I there's so many there were so many good ones to to choose from uh there's a lot of leadership on this team um you know every position group every side of the ball um special teams offense defense uh but uh yeah very ecstatic ecstatic about the the group um if we ever do need an alternate the alternate on defense would be LOE Gilman and um offensive alternate there was a tie between um Trey pipkins and JK dobins so super as you can see there was just there was a uh lot of really a lot of great leadership on our football team no one was voted in on special teams uh they were included in the yeah the and think that's the most most specialist votes I've ever uh in the history of doing this this voting with uh with the team that um the Specialists got as as many votes as they did all three all three got Cameron Dicker uh JK Scott and Josh Harris uh got uh got a very good number of vote they're well they're they're tremendously well respected on the on the football team and then um they'll be they'll be one special team's Captain per week uh that'll be based off the previous games performance and they'll rotate in as uh as part of the six for each game is uh didn't see ran during the open period is he working through something yeah okay we through something what do you like about getting Taylor hin um I just like him I uh I like uh the the production he's had the um thing that jumps out is uh the fact that he's he's able to as many games as he played and and started in um many times as he had he's had to be the one that you know that that uh that won a a quarterback competition that uh and like the way he competes on the field um I I I like the way he plays he plays his game as a quarterback I think that's really important and um that uh really really happy to have him on our team as we said before competitors welcome from many state any country any team competitors are welcome at the Los Angeles Chargers what's it been like just seeing Joe mold the bottom of the roster and it churn the last couple weeks cuz I think it it's been like eight or nine moves since I started Camp couple trades couple waiver claims a little bit of everything I love it I love I love uh the way um I got a new nickname for Joe uh actually my dad Jack Harbaugh uh thought it up chef hortiz and just the way he's the way he's uh adding the ingredients to the football team and football players are and that there's no higher compliment you give them football you're a football player he's a football player and that being added uh to the to the those ingredients that he is uh that he is mixing into this this football team is uh just outstanding and that's that's what I see when you know when uh when when this player is added or that player's ated or look at this you know check out this player on on tape what do you think you know it's like I see football player um competitors and they're welcome so I can't I can't take credit for that one that was uh because my dad came up with that one what did the M offer in the secondary it seems like he got some position flexibility yeah uh been a starter in this league um the ability to play in the the Deep middle of the field deep half but he can also he can also be a nickel he can also be a dime backer uh which will allow you know uh us to be able to use derwin's ability to play in the middle play in the half play as a uh close to the line of scrimmage and uh play as a as a a dime backer I mean Duran can do all that stuff so uh you know that's to be now we have now we have just better more flexibility to to uh you know in our in our entire secondary and you know specifically derwin's talents but uh yeah he's just competitor you know football player super happy about it you can just of welcoming all competitors what was Easton's uh reaction to adding Taylor and after his preseason yeah um competitors is welcome I mean you you you want it you uh and you seek it out and that uh that um that will that'll the competition will will be going on from an experience level how much does it help the room atting him especially the fact that he started that entire 2021 nearly that entire 2021 season in Washington and uh as a playoff birth under his resume yeah I mean his his his body at work I mean um the uh the team's are the team when he quarterbacks team I mean it's competitive team's competitive that that that playoff game I remember watching it on TV uh but you know then the next year he pretty much started most all the games and and the year after that and um you know even even this preseason I mean I watched him against uh Jacksonville you got Jacksonville start defense out there and and um Atlanta's you know playing with the the the second string on offense and yeah I I was I'm sure he was proud of of that P performance um you they were was battling and and uh throws with really good accuracy and um just plays his game he's just got you know play his game the um the backup quarterback here uh uh with the Chargers behind Justin it's it is uh just hit me now I've been watching this for months now but we have got to coach them separately from Justin uh they they can't try to replicate Justin and what he does uh in every way you know the footwork that he takes the reads that he makes the throws that he he attempts uh he's unreplicable uh and anybody that's that's uh you know that's in that same quarterback room with him is I mean you got to get out of your mind what he can and does do and concentrate on doing your game I think it I think Easton uh in particular um has we're not doing him any favors by um coaching him the same way as as as Justin Herbert or for Easton to try to do what what Justin's doing so I'm practically going to separate those uh those meetings and uh uh just coach them to they they've got to play their game um whether it's Easton or Taylor um and uh we got to have a you know a game plan that fits them that they can go into the game and and and play winning football and play you know play up to you know the to their capabilities so uh that's that's something that uh I'm I feel strongly about and going to start coaching that way you know from yesterday on that's when it it really hit me but um you know there's the bottom line is there's no other there's no other Justin Herbert there's nobody that can do what he can do and uh I mean nobody else is 66 240 pounds that could stand in the pocket with people draped on them and you know still still throw a ball you know 40 yards down the field on a you know dime as as the young people call it I mean that's uh that's just him so yeah the other the other the other quarterbacks on the team um that's the plan anyway we'll see if we're see if see if we're right or wrong but uh I uh I think that's just going to be a a more productive way for the team and those those quarterbacks that that uh back up Justin but in that vein if heaven forbid Justin gets hurt during a game do you then have a in case of emergency break glass game plan or how much does the game plan have to contract if there's an injury well it needs to be different it needs to be it needs to be what what Easton does best what what uh what uh what Taylor would do best whatever quarterback you're putting in there it needs to be that I mean uh yes is it going to take more work yeah yeah it's probably it's going to take more work for uh us coaches but if that if that's what's going to give our team a better chance to win then we're we're willing to do it and then just going on past experience did you kind of have that same back in San Francisco with Alex and Colin because they were two different quarterbacks and play play two different games yeah I I had them both you know uh any quarterback I've ever coached I mean the fundamental thing for a quarterback is you got to play your game and uh something I learned from Ted marcha broa uh rest in peace Ted but that's you got to do you and um so yeah that's that's something it's just it's just more clear in my mind that i' never been in this kind of situation where you know there's there's the starting quarterback that you can't replicate what he does you know that's that's the difference uh right now and you you you continue to watch you know Justin's practice reps and game reps and um you know you you you I just put myself in their shoes I put myself in East in six shoes and if I'd have been doing that for you know the last four years I couldn't have done it there's no there's nobody that could you know I can't think of maybe maybe maybe one or two on the planet that could be be like uh be like Justin so that's a new situation because it is you we have a quarterback on our team that you can't you can't emulate you going to you going to have the TV on Saturday night to see chiron's debut and how things go oh yeah absolutely um can't wait uh they've had a they've had a great camp and uh been super productive um players are uh have done a great job chiron's doing a great job and all the coaches all the coaches are and have no doubt that they'll be they'll be ready to rock lock coocked and ready to rock Saturday night in the big house youan speaking of Michigan guys yeah how do you see him fitting into that running back uh competitors welcome the same uh that's just another mean football player you talk about football player now I start think of football players there's Hassan I mean that's like um you know he's uh har balls love the has Haskins he's like a son to me um but uh his his versatility as a player I mean he's a he is a hard running black back you you block the play for a yard he's liable to get three most all most often most of the time block it for two he'll get four um and he's a really good pass protector uh and a game changer tone Setter uh on special teams as well um he's always been one of those guys that just you ever since I met him um jumped six foot seven in the high jump when he was in high school he had 11 sacks as an edge player and um had a lot of runs he was a he was a wildcat quarterback in high school and he kind of mush it up in there and you know block for one he'd get three block for two he'd get four but whenever they put him at running back then he he came he came alive you know with people people blocking for him and uh he's just he's been uh he's always been a yeah real tough out standing competitor and a great player
