you can begin to fight poverty and pollution at the same time you can fight poverty and pollution at the same time what does the agenda for jobs and Justice and opportunity in our communities have to do with them polar bears they keep talking about I mean what what is what is the relationship you know I mean I love the polar bears you know I'm sure you I'm not going to H one you know I'm not going try to cutle up to one but you know they they're beautiful animals but they keep talking about these polar bears and a lot of us just look at that and say well you know I feel sorry for the little guys they drowning or whatever but I'm going to funerals every other weekend right I mean I'm from Oakland um uh I've been I've been out here for about 2 weeks taking a class before I came out here for the two weeks no I went home to I was home for about seven8 days I went to three funerals I went to three funerals with young people in the caskets and grayhair people in the Pew now that's like that happened in Boston y'all have any of this kind of violence we got kids going the school in classrooms 36 KS I bet y'all can't compare to this 36 kids in a classroom six books no chalk and no toilet paper okay and then they wonder why the kids get upset sh we would be upset we might be pushing and arguing and fussing and fighting here if we had to come every day and sit in a classroom with 36 people and only one teacher and no books okay but then those kids wind up they don't go to the principal's office anymore they go to the precinct in handcuffs it's called The Strip Okay so we have real problems so when I come to the neighborhood and I start saying guess what we got to do something he was like what what is it what we got to do we got to do something to help the polar bears you know they not feeling it we want survive in our environment did you hear that right here this is what they're trying to tell us you want you want come up here what Mary mlan just said is the most fundamental thing that I have to say to anybody in two ways you couldn't hear in the back what she said was if the polar bears go we're next if the if the polar bears don't survive we won't survive okay now when you think about about that that means two things that means whatever we do that fixes it for the polar bears is the same thing they'll fix it for Pooky right anybody got know anybody named Pooky poy have a job no no okay so I'm I'm just being real here it's late may as well be real Pooky do Pooky have a job no Pooky doesn't have a job so Pooky struggling and the polar bear struggling how do we fix it for Pooky and how do we fix it for the polar bear and the brainstorm is the Insight is that you beat me to the punch on stealing my punchline is that Green Collar jobs are a solution for both Green Collar jobs green jobs are a solution for both let me tell you why if we're going to beat global warming the reason the polar bears are suffering and struggling it's not that that they're up there lighting fires you know I mean they're not they're not up there causing anything to get warm we're doing that when we driv in our cars carbon comes out the back of our cars and goes up in the atmosphere and does come down for thousands of years well carbon makes it warmer keep keeps traps the heat on the earth when we cut on our light switch you say I'm not I'm not a polluter I'm not running any big nasty Corporation or factory I'm just cutting my light on but when you cut that light on that energy is coming from a probably a coal powered uh Power Plant that's putting out all kind of carbon so every day we're going about our refrigerators are running we're R going around doing what we supposed to do but we don't see this this this invisible enemy of carbon is going up there and trapping all this heat so the polar bears need us to do something different now what can we do different well one thing my brother just said we could do we could put up solar panels solar panels just take the energy from the Sun turnning electricity doesn't burn anything so it doesn't put any carbon up in the air so that would be a good solution another thing we could do we could start to weather rise and then you do enough of that you can start closing some of these power plants other thing we could do the this building here is a crime against humanity I don't mean to offend nobody cuz I'm sure it's a lot of good stuff happen in this building but if you could see it from an energy point of view it's it's just it just leaking all over the place all right and many of our homes are leaking energy aren't our fuel bills too high energy bills too high heat okay so when you think about it from that point of view if we as my brother was saying efficiency conservation what that mean that means weatherizing our homes okay that means somebody going in doing an energy audit trying to show us where we could use some some cck and and and put in different kind of Windows take out our old appls put in some new stuff make our energy our homes more energy efficient then we're not using so much energy and our heat bill goes down now wait a minute you think about that people talking about the president people talking about the mayor right great people good people sometimes in high office I said sometimes but I want to offend nobody talking about the White House thing even if you had the best president in the history of the world right and the president signed your bill on global warming and global climate change the next morning the president is not going to put up one solar panel am I right the president is not going to weatherize one home am I right and even our great mayor here as hard as he's fighting you're not going to see him on Tuesday morning with a hard hat and lunch bucket trying to put up the toil pant right but somebody is going to have to do all of that work somebody is going to have to put up millions of solar panels all over this country sign me up I me right somebody is going to have to weatherize millions and millions of homes somebody is going to have to put up not just one uh what call wind one wind turbine they're talking about having whole wind turbine Farms they say we have a Saudi Arabia of wind energy in the midwest right now somebody's got to go out there and build every one of those wind turbines all a sudden all a sudden the agenda to save the polar bear is the agenda to save Pooky right get Pooky that job give Pooky that job give Snoopy that job give chenene and hway you know you know who need that job why do I say it like that I say it like that because we have a moral obligation in this country amen am I right we have a moral obligation in this country we're the world leader in the pollution now that's a shame all the technology we have and the genius that we have we've had solar panels for a long time I heard about solar panels when I was that little baby's age it was what in but we hav't put them up okay so we need to go from being the world leader in the pollution to being the world leader in the solution am I right so and so it's time for this movement now to stand up and say you know what it's a new day it's a new day we insist at the people who most need the jobs who most need the jobs who most need the jobs get a chance to do the jobs that most need to be done and when we do that we will be able to build a coalition that has the best of Labor the best of the environmentalist the best of the old civil rights racial Justice Community the best of the environmentalists the best of our elected officials we'll have the Coalition we've always wanted and more importantly than that we'll have the country we always wanted because we're not just going to save money we will save the soul of this country with this movement thank you very much [Applause]
