[Music] Jennifer Gray was most well known for her starring role in the iconic 1987 movie Dirty Dancing Jennifer played Baby a young woman who took dance lessons from Johnny who was played by Patrick suy the two fall in love during a stay at a summer camp in Upstate New York the movie is solidified in pop culture Jennifer had also starred in another hit Ferris Beer's day off in 1986 while Jennifer had a bright future ahead of her she didn't have sustaining success as an actress like some of her peers we're going to get into that in a moment so you'd never know by watching Dirty Dancing that incredible scene where Patrick Suzy lifts Jennifer Gray up you would never know that the two actually did not get along with each other at all Patrick and Jennifer had started in Red Dawn together in 1984 and apparently Patrick szy was a jokester he was a prankster on set and Jennifer hated it she was really not into the jokes and the pranks so years later when she found out that she was going to be co-starring with Patrick swezy in Dirty Dancing she was really against it and she almost did not take on that role but she said Patrick pulled her side apologized profusely he even had tears in his eyes according to Jennifer what's also interesting is that a lot of accounts say that Patrick was actually a very serious actor Jennifer on the other hand was newer she wasn't a trained dancer and as we know filming for that movie was very strenuous very hard on the on the actors and it was very difficult if you didn't have any dancing background and so Jennifer didn't have a dancing background she was not a trained dancer and they had to do so many takes over and over and over of the same scene and Jennifer was giggling most of the time so a lot of the times they had to stop the scene because Jennifer was giggling some of those scenes in Dirty Dancing where she's laughing that is actually not scripted she just could not stop laughing and eventually they had to keep it in the movie and it is rumored that Jennifer giggling the way that she couldn't keep a straight face really annoyed Patrick the two definitely did not get along they were like oil and water so let's talk about Jennifer's family Jennifer Gray came from an entertainment family her father Joel gray was an oscar-winning actor and her mother Joe was also an actress now Joel gray very famously came out as gay in 2015 to People magazine in his 80s Jennifer actually found out in an extremely traumatizing way at the time Jennifer was dating Matthew brck who was her co-star in Ferris Beer's day off Matthew's mother Patricia brck randomly just blurted out the fact that Jennifer's father was gay and she even used a slur while saying it Jennifer said that it felt extremely aggressive it was like a sniper attack and it was undoubted L traumatic for her often you'll hear people ask what happened to Jennifer Gray's career and honestly a large part of it was probably her nose job she had so much momentum coming off of dirty dancing people loved her look unfortunately what people see actually means nothing if you don't see it within you and sadly many of Jennifer's insecurities were likely passed on by her parents in her Memoir Jennifer mentioned that as a child she was very anti- rhinoplasty however both of her parents had had nose jobs now Jennifer says the reason she got rhinoplasty was for her career she said quote there didn't seem to be a surplus of parts for actresses who looked like me my so-called problem wasn't really a problem for me but since it seemed to be a problem for other people and it didn't appear to be going away anytime soon by default it became my problem it was as plain as the nose on my face but the thing is Jennifer had gotten amazing roles with that nose so obviously Hollywood was accepting of her to an extent but who knows what she was experiencing behind the scenes with the castings now Jennifer was adamant that she didn't feel the need to get a nose job but said that her mother suggested it and that is when she decided to look into the procedure so both Jennifer's parents were in show business and it looks like their own insecurities finally rubbed off on their daughter Jennifer had said that her mother essentially was very matter of fact about it and said it's too hard to cast you so just make it easier on them she said she didn't fault her parents for their beliefs she said it was the 1950s her parents were just doing their best to assimilate and they didn't want to look too Jewish those were her words so the first surgery that she had the first rhinoplasty was meant to just fine-tune her nose but it wound up being a botched surgery so she decided to have a second corrective surgery and that's when the drastic changes occurred in her Memoir she shares major regrets and she says that she essentially lost her identity and her face overnight and it is true I mean that nose drop is drastic she goes on to say that people that she knew in the industry couldn't recognize her she went on a plane and the flight attendant said this isn't you and that must have been so jarring for her as it was jarring for the general public another reason why her career might not have gone the way that she initially thought it would have is because she had a lot of anxiety after her nose job Jennifer was actually cast as a guest star on the hit sitcom Friends she was only on one episode in 1995 and that was titled the one with the evil orthodontist she was cast as Mindy Rachel's former best friend and Made of Honor Jennifer said that she couldn't continue the role because of anxiety the sitcom world is very different from movies movies have a set cast they have a set script you learn the script you bang it out in the sitcom World especially the live audience sitcom world you write a joke and you act it out and you wait to see if the audience responds the way that you think if the audience doesn't laugh if the joke doesn't land then right on this spot the writers are going to rewrite that joke have the actors memorize it again and act it out again so imagine being there you have a live audience you have to learn lines on the spot and recite them and it just is not for everyone and it was not for Jennifer Gray she said quote they were trying to figure out what the character was what the scene was and it was changing and changing and changing it all made me so anxious that I could barely do it and it's the same reason why she never did Saturday Night Live even though she had the opportunity to she didn't realize it at the time but she had performance anxiety and when the time came to reprise that role as Mindy on friends she had to tell the casting agents that she couldn't do it and she had decline even though she was initially very excited about the opportunity so she had a really interesting life I still can't believe that she got rid of her career by changing her nose and it was her mother that influenced her so even though she was confident she felt really comfortable with who she was the influence of her mother was stronger than that and it just goes to show how much of an influence your parents can have on you if you cannot and will not stand true to what you believe in Jennifer was totally confident but her mother got in her head about her marketability meanwhile her parents had their own insecurities going on they got their nose jobs her father was in the closet for most of his life and essentially living a lie and so it really is a lesson in just staying true to yourself let me know your thoughts and I'll see you in the next [Music] video
