yeah you know um I think my press conference was April 3rd uh 2014 and um about 3 hours later I just wanted to cry um I actually wanted to call Daryl Mory back and say I've made the biggest mistake of my life uh can I come back and at the time he was trying to petition the uh NBA or get a waiver so I could stay with them through the playoffs uh we were getting ready to play Portland I think uh the first round and they wanted me to uh stay and uh help them through that but um um I think it was the next day or the following day uh the FedEx guy came in and um you know my head was spinning like crazy he said you have a package I said okay just leave it up front thank you he said no it's not that kind of package so he says you need to come out here in the hall so I went out it was 11t box I said thought was it practice he'd have to run a lap but I can smell what he's doing so he's good U but it was uh um I don't remember if I opened it or some I think maybe it was me um but probably wasn't it's probably Kellen or somebody started cutting on that thing and it pulled out it was a u ladder and as soon as I saw the ladder I knew who it was from because uh we had won four big 12 championships um I had won four big 12 championships while I was coach at Oklahoma with Joe as the ad and he was with I was real close with him we he was with me every step of the way and um we used to talk about the symbolism that each step represented on is is is important so um we want to be getting to the line more than our opponents uh uh uh make more than they attempt and that's kind of a general goal but uh uh that kind of reflects how you're playing defensively and offensively quick turn now 24 hours yet folks who don't realize this you prep for this all year long I mean your team is you play Early season tournaments things like this try to get ready for a quick turn oh yeah I mean it's they're they're ready I mean we Eman played a a 35 but uh everybody else our minutes were pretty good and yeah they didn't play last night but um you know some ways it's it's it's a good thing to play and uh um I think this is a good opportunity for us because um you know they're the number one seed we beat them once before yes so we're confident enough that we can beat them but uh um we need this game more than they do and so uh we're going to really go into that game playing take on Houston a team that's 28 and3 they're 15-3 in the Big 12 and you said surprised you a bit with how the success they had in the Big T well we knew they'd be good there was no doubt about it and and they were picked um but I i' to be honest I didn't think anybody would go three I thought be five to six losses for the leader uh give them credit they did it um uh they stay genuine healthy until the end and then uh um but their defense is you know it's it's a um it's it's off the charts it's they win with defense and uh uh if the offense is there it's a it's a real problem but um you know they got the guys committed to defense they're defended they defend they rebound and U you know that's why they're they're one and and uh as I say that's why we're uh in the 20s 30s you know we got to defend better they're not overwhelming height-wise but but they can be physical right they're certainly physical there's no question about it they big guys have amazing uh uh feet physicality um they play with great energy uh and that's all of them that's the thing there there's no weakness when they bring in another guy and I think that's what makes it different you did a pretty good job in the first matchup the win obviously in Fort Worth against Jamal shed the player of the year in the league yeah I think uh uh it was key I mean obviously there Roberts hurt us a lot they went to him uh but shed is uh if you can kind of slow him down a a little bit gives you a chance uh to stop him on the offensive end but um he's still going to bother you on the defensive end and then LJ crry was just one of seven again from from distance against you yeah no I mean you know you you get if they making shots they pretty hard to the defense is the constant and that's what we're trying to instill in our guys is that being the constant uh certainly haven't got to their level yet but um that'll be the goal yeah they they hold opponents under what 40% shooting about 38 yeah yeah no they're number one on defense on fishan it's not even close yeah all right your team team here tonight what is the final message here heading into this well rebounding you know we've made that very clear from the beginning we've got improv it this week and I don't know that we've accomplished that in our first one so we've got a second one to uh uh to show what we're made of all right best of luck okay thank play next let's go get ready for that one you know then that one and that one and um how many have we win in a row now I don't even know nine so that was nine games ago and now we'll play the winner of uh you know what's it going to be like playing the Big 12 tournament I don't care about the Big 12 tournament we played a winner of TCU in Oklahoma simple as that who who do we play when where do we we play them in Kansas City at 2:00 on uh Thursday right okay what 12:00 on Thursday we'll be be ready to play the winter all the pump and Circumstance and all the drama and stuff that people want to make out of it I don't care about any of that stuff and our kids are pretty much the same way if I would have told you the start of the conference schedule a team wins this league by going 15 and three what would you have said uh I thought 13 and5 you'd be lucky to win the league um and um iow was St went 13 and5 right yeah I I would have thought that but uh you know when you you know I sometimes I'll use cliches because they are important but uh you know you know for us I I never thought about what our record would be or what it could be that's for fans the media uh to debate uh you know like talk radio or podcast if you don't talk about that stuff what are you going to talk about right so but I'm I'm not involved in that world my my world my world is the world you talk about so how how I handle uh how I handle um anything really is how I handle um everything when it comes to that um every game we play I expect us to win uh we haven't won a game this year that I thought we weren't going to win um um probably the game that pissed me off the most was TCU for a lot of different reasons uh you know and I don't like people to walk up to me and say um uh you should have won that one well you you don't know what you're talking about you know what you just know what you saw but you don't know anything behind the scenes nor should you but that that game bothered me um and then from there we went on a little stretch um but the uh the Kansas game didn't bother me you know they were way better than us that day you know uh the other game bothered me you know we we we did do the things that we needed to do our teams always win that game that threat game bothered me um losing Iowa State who we play next I I don't dwell on that uh Kansas I didn't dwell on that one I dwelled on I I dwelt on TCU and though a little longer than I normally do um then I started to get mad um but I got mad at myself first cuz I don't I'm not a finger pointer and I don't blame others I always I always evaluate me before I do anything else um so I met with the staff and I said look we got to get better at this this and this and we did and we got that that helped us busy show tonight Cougars haven't beat this season cougars are trying to change that today Houston Cougars and the TCU horn frogs in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Conference tournament TCU 21- 11 on the year 9-9 in Big 12 play the Houston Cougars 28-3 on the season 15-3 in Big 12 Play let's catch up with some of the scores from around the Big 12 tournament you have to go back all the way until Tuesday of course 14 teams double bu in the Big 12 tournament for the top four seeds cougars are one of those top four seeds so you go back a few days first couple of games uh first couple of games of the tournament came on Tuesday it was UCF defeating Oklahoma State 7762 to advance Oklahoma state has since fired their head coach Mike Bon see what they do with their position and then it was Cincinnati defeating West Virginia 90 to 85 West Virginia LED that game big but blew a big lead Cincinnati coming from behind to get the win West Virginia expected to seek a new head coach as well so four games are on tap yesterday in the Big 12 tournament the first one was BYU defeating UCF by 14 87-73 TCU who we're about to see they were able to get past Oklahoma 77 to 70 and then in the evening session Kansas State Over Texas in a close one 7874 and then in the finale Cincinnati who was down big against West Virginia the day before they beat Kansas 72 to 52 Kansas did sit their best two players Kevin mcculler and Hunter Dickinson did did not play in that game Bill self wants to save them and rest them for the NCAA tournament so it sets up four games today in the Big 12 tournament one game is already final where we saw earlier today BYU falling to Texas Tech Texas Tech picking up the victory in that game over BYU advancing to the semi-finals tomorrow that'll be a 6:00 game Texas Tech versus the winner of our game TCU in Houston Texas Tech beat BYU 8167 in that one the other two games on tap in the Big 12 tournament after us it's the two- seed Iowa State should see a big crowd Cyclones travel well to this tournament as they host or they take on number 10 seed Kansas State and in the final game of the night we'll see three seed Baylor facing off against the 11th seed Cincinnati games in the top 25 number six Arizona leads us or actually they're tied four to four now just getting started though 16 minutes left to go in the first half Mountain West Conference uh quarterfinal it's number 18 Utah State leading Fresno State 7 to6 at the First Media timeout games in the top 25 later today number 15 South Carolina facing off against Arkansas kraton the number eight team in the country facing off against Providence number 11 Duke faces NC State in the quarterfinals of the ACC number 24 Dayton versus Dain in the A10 quarterfinal number 22 Washington State in Stanford Pack 12 quarter number 23 Nevada in Colorado state in the Mountain West Conference uh quarterfinal 10th ranked Marquette facing off against Villanova Marquette a little short-handed and then a pair of finals from earlier today where it was number two Yukon blowing out Xavier 87- 60 and number four North Carolina with a 9267 win against Florida State big before we meet the starters for today's game what are the keys today what do the Houston Cougars have to do well to advance tomorrow's semi-final against Texas T well they're going to have to really use their athleticism to really begin to take these guys off the board and they're going to have to really run that basketball and they're going to have to really play their game they you I think the coup's going to have to really shoot the ball extremely well and and other than that I think that rebounding both offensively and defensively and also you know taking this ball to them taking it to the hoop and and I think if they would do that I think they have a good shot of winning this basketball game the Cougars did not shoot well in the first matchup between these two teams we mentioned it earlier in the pregame show uh last time that these two teams played was January 13th only meeting this season TCU won that game it was the second of back-to-back losses for the Houston Cougars they fell a 1-2 in Big 12 play well the kougars will win 14 of their next 15 Big 12 games and the winners of their last nine as as they win the Big 12 Championship but you look back to that January 13th game inside of SCH me arena in Fort Worth and they didn't shoot it well like they didn't to do today like you said Big E especially from behind the three-point line cougars are just 4 for 18 from behind the three-point line in that game 22% they were 27 of 64 in that game not bad but four of 18 from three Jawan Roberts had a big game that that night 20 points 13 rebounds five assists four blocks we'll see if the Cougars take advantage of his size yet again today they also had 17 points from Damen Dunn Off the Bench one of Damen Dunn's better games this season it was a second most points he scored in a game this season and I believe the most points he scored in a conference game Jamal shed had 11 points five assists but it was a an off night from LJ CER he was two for 14 from the floor a one of seven from three and the Cougars outside of Damen Dunn didn't get a whole lot from their pitch something that they want to change today cougars defensively in that game were fine though they only gave up 68 points to TCU TCU shot 43% they did shoot 53% from three 8 for 15 and they also got to the free throw line attempted 29 free throws in that game to the Cougars 13 rebounding was about even but a long time between uh that game in today's game nearly two months to the date between the last match up between the Houston Cougars and the TCU horn frogs all right let's take a look at today's starting lineups first for the the TCU horn frogs 21- 11 on the season 9-9 in Big 12 play their point guards the 6-2 senior from from Pennsylvania jir Nelson Jr a transfer from Delaware started his career George Washington was Nam a big 12 honorable mention uh he led the colonial conference last year with 20 a half points per game of course the son of jir Nelson Senior who we all know very very well he's joined in the back court by a 67 senior from Las Vegas Chuck oanon in a USC transfer averaging 5 1/2 points a game just under 2 and 1/2 rebounds per Contest out on the wing 68 senior from Texas is mAh py or Peavey rather peave is a Texas Tech transfer that is averaging 11 points 4 and a half rebounds a game down low their best player 67 senior from Ontario is Emanuel Miller Miller a transfer from Texas A&M averaging 16 half points a game fourth best in the Big 12 just under six rebounds a game 15th best in the Big 12 it was named a big 12 second team selection he had the game winner against the Houston Cougars the first time this these two teams played and the Big Man Down Low the 611 sophomore from Orlando Florida is Ernest UD UD at Kansas transfer averaging 4 and a half points 5 and a half rebounds a contest the head coach for TCU is Jamie Dixon he's in his 21st year overall 488 victories 231 losses he's in his eighth year at TCU 160 wins and 108 losses so again for TCU it's Nelson oand and PB Miller and UD now for the Houston Cougars same starting five we become accustomed to for Head Coach Kelvin Samson 28 and3 on the season 15 and3 in Big 12 play the point guards the Big 12 Player of the Year and going to be an All-American here in a couple of weeks 61 senior for mayor Jamal Jed just over 13 points a game just under four rebounds a game second in the Big 12 and assists with 6.2 and he's second in the Big 12 with Stills with just under 2 and A2 he's joined to the back court by LJ CER the 61 senior a all Big 12 second team selection prer six in the Big 12 in points just over 15 1 12 points a game he leads the Big 12 in three-point percentage at 39% and he's first and three-pointers made with just over three a game the other guard for the Houston Cougars the 6-3 sophomore from Tampa is Emanuel sharp sharp averaging just under 12 and a half points a game he's eighth in the conference and stills with one and a half down low 67 senior from the Virgin Islands is Jawan Roberts Roberts a hair under 10 points a contest seven rebounds a game seven bests in the Big 12 Roberts was named All Conference 1 team selection and the Big Man Down Low 68 Jr from New Orleans it's jier Francis Francis six points five rebounds one and a half blocks a game six best in the Big 12 head coach for the Houston Cougars is Kelvin Samson the Big 12 Coach of the Year 700 60 lifetime victories in his 35th year overall he's in his 10th year at the University of Houston where he has 260 wins against 77 losses so again for the Cougars it's shed CER sharp Roberts and Francis the officials for this afternoon's game Doug been in this building before and it has not treated the Cougars too kindly we were here last year where the Cougars were eliminated by Miami in the sweet 16 and we were here several years ago when the Cougars were eliminated in The Sweet 16 by Kentucky the Cougars hoping to uh snap the skin inside of T-Mobile Center that's true let do it so cougars 0 and2 in this building but they are 5-0 against TCU in Conference tournament games you have to go back to the Southwest Conference the last time that these two teams played in a conference tournament game was 1995 the old Southwest Conference cougars beat TCU 80 to 77 in the first round of the Southwest Conference tournament to improve to 5-0 all time against TCU in Conference tournament play so the Cougars are on the floor tcu's on the floor and we're moments away from tip off inside of T-Mobile Center good crowd Iowa state will play the game after us they're notorious for drawing well here Kansas draws very well I'm curious how never be excuse you know to rebounding and um knowing me I'm a natural rebounder you know that's that's what gets me going you know not scoring or getting touches or whatever rebound is What fumes me to do everything else on the court so just you know just being a a lead and rebounder um just basically just go into the game with no ego and just try to fly around you know just do my best to impact attention that he deserved for the way he was playing between some of the conference Awards and the way the season has gone do you feel like that shifted a little bit uh I I don't know if I meant he want get the credit deserve I just uh it was after the Iowa State game and uh I had seen some people that have since uh started watching this play I guess cuz I saw somebody put out their best six point guards and he wasn't even on it so um I didn't get upset about it I just want remind him you may you may want to watch the point guard for Houston he's pretty good you know not that those other kids aren't they are but he's he's he's pretty good but you know um know you know we're not exactly a media darling sometimes when you're not one of those guys you don't really get looked at a whole lot and that's fine they said you know if you've got kids like uh Jamal or jwan and if they're deserving if they're not then they're not but if they're deserving you you you certainly want to fight forgive me I hope you I just wanted your perspective um you veteran coach obviously have a successful program I was wondering can kind of just speak to what you've seen from like the job Jamie has done at TCU building that program well to where they could actually guys beat you and you know um compete with you guys today what was the last part just I wish shouldn't say compete with you guys today but I meant just how he's built his program up to where well it's nothing about us you know um uh we won a bunch of games this year that we could have easily lost so we're not running around here thinking we're God's gift to Big 12 basketball cuz we're not we could could have easily lost at BYU at Texas um um there's other upper time here uh Baylor you know sometimes you you you got to put yourself in those positions to win and we have but um I've always always admired and respected Jamie Dixon he I I really have he's uh somebody that I've known for a long time in this business you know um Jam's um been a been an outstanding college coach for a long time um I remember when um he was at Pittsburgh um and the job he did there and now coming home to his Alma modern job he's doing now uh I think the sign of a an outstanding coaches uh like especially like Jamie is doing it every year you know he's got his team hunt every single year if you were a player you'd have to run a shuttle for having your phone on but I'm going to let you go but if you had your phone on and we were in a meeting like this it was one of my players that' be in trouble somebody's trying to tell me something about our next uh press conference yeah just make sure it's off but uh uh I I think Jamie is one of those guys that um when you think about a really good coach you think jamy duxon let's go back over here to the left and then we'll come back to the right Jamal you've been part of deep NCA tournament runs obviously you guys had a lot of success in the regular season being in the Big 12 tournament for the first time any different approach from from you or the team uh in general from what you maybe done in the past in the AAC um I think for the past four years that I've been here we approached every game the same um you know like we said at the beginning of the year Big 12 it's just a lot harder competition at a consistent level um but no nothing different preparation wise you know we try to look at our matchups um identify something that we can do to help us win and then try to go out there and execute so um our preparation is usually the same um just about going out there executing what we work on uh Joan you know after losing TCU back in in January now with this game here and this being the only you know loss that you guys have in avenge of course there's enough motivation being in the in the tournament but was there a little extra juice for you guys going into this game at all uh not not really um we just kind of treat every game the same you know it's not this game is more important than this other game you know every game is important the same way um and we played them probably early you know January and um we just saw them again and you know I feel like when we played at TCU we just probably didn't execute how we were supposed to we end up losing so just playing them the second time it's just adjusting and um uh like coach always says you know it's not we're playing against TSU you know it's TSU not playing against TCU it's just looking at your matchups and trying to win your matchup and that's basically what we hang our hats on you know if Jamal's guarding some and so you know dominate your matchup and dominate whatever it is and it's just how we approach again coach Pete Christie from KCBD can we just get your thoughts on on facing Texas Tech now in the semi-finals tomorrow yes another team has been so long since we played them um um I have to go back and look at the film and u i remember Jamal played really good um I don't remember a whole lot about that game um I think Texas Tech was our third second game or third game so that was what 15 games ago and then our next one was uh Tech um but Tech Texas Tech is uh a lot like TCU outstanding coach but that's this league isn't it everybody's got a good coach in this league they're all really really good coaches great homecourt advantages was what makes our league uh unique but um you know like them I I they probably won't remember a lot about us us until they go back and watch film we'll go back watch film figure out U come up with something that we need to do and go play them tomorrow
