in the first inning there was a runner on base for Jake cronenworth white AR come set two- pitch swung on driven to right field in deep looking up as Duca this one is gone home run for Jak cronenworth home run number 16 on the season and the Padre's have an early two nothing lead the Rays answered in the bottom half of the first inning against Randy Vasquez RBI single for Jose cabayo made it 2 to one an RBI single for Brandon Lao tied the game at two in the second there were still two on base for junior cero first pitch to him swinging driven towards left field and well hit going back is Merill he's at the wall he looks up it's gone three-run home run for junior commero and all of a sudden the Rays have a 52 lead as the damage continues here in the second inning it's sted five to2 until the bottom half of the fourth inning cabayo struck again with a two-run single that made it s to2 Ben rvet hit an RBI single that made it an 8-2 game the Rays got another run against Vasquez in the fifth Inning on Christopher Morel RBI single it was a 9-2 game final line yesterday for Randy Vasquez four innings in a third nine earned runs given up 11 hits BOS would go five innings and allow just the two early runs it stayed 9-2 until the top of the seventh inning Padre's made some noise against the rais bullpen Luis campusano hit a one- out single Mason McCoy was next O2 to McCoy ground ball left side cero on the back and it's going to go off his glove into left field down into the Padres bullpit cisano is heading towards third Tim leaper is going to send him campy is going to score to send McCoy here comes the throw he is going to be safe at home plate and Padre's have a rally going on the RBI single by Lis arise Padre's now Trail 9 to4 that would be as close as the Padre's would get yesterday the final score yesterday Rays 11 and the Padre's four now the Padre's playing the rubbert game of this three- game series first pitch coming up towards the top of the hour Padre's in search of their first series win at tropican field since 2010 let's go to St Petersburg Florida and check in with Tony Gwyn Jr let's go inside the pad R's broadcast booth for a deep dive on today's matchup from Tony Gwyn Jr in our pod R's game preview on the Pod R Radio Network we go to the trout we're joined by Tony Gwyn Jr as we get ready for today's game coming up here on the Padre's radio network and Tony let's start with uh I guess you could say the biggest move out of the flurry of moves the Padre's made earlier today and I'll get into all them a little bit later but that is veteran catcher Alias Diaz joining the major league roster Tony what do you anticipate the role of leas Diaz will be here on uh this Padre's team in the month of September and hopefully well beyond um I I think it'll it'll largely depend on what the other two catchers are doing um I think he'll get his opportunities to go out and uh spell higashioka or or campasano um assuming he's swinging the bat and and doing some of the things offensively we seen him do in the past uh I think right now it's a fluid situation certainly KY is probably the lead dog when he's healthy um and then after that I think it's kind of a who's hot who's not at that point yeah well leas Diaz certainly somebody that we've seen a ton of in Colorado certainly brings a lot defensively has some power as well so we'll see when Alias Diaz makes his Padre's debut focusing on today's game Tony rubber game of this three-game series let's start with this obviously the Padre's are towards the very end of this 18 game in 18-day stretch it's a sort sort of a tough final 24 hours here because you have the game today then a long flight then a game that starts at 3:40 local time here in San Diego tomorrow so it's not an easy ending to this stretch Tony when you're a player going through this type of stretch you got the long flight coming up how do you get through the the final couple of days of a stretch like this when you're playing every day you know I I think when you get to this point you know the mid strrretch of this is probably the most difficult but at this point you see the light at the end of the tunnel yeah and for the most part players can wrap their minds around getting through this one yes it's going to suck to have to get on a flight go home uh especially a 5 hour plus flight uh and then turn around and get up and play uh pretty early the next day I think it's going to be difficult but guys see the light at the end of the tunnel they they can lock in for these next as you you said 24 hours uh and and and try to put their best foot forward and then get that off day to kind of uh relax a little bit till in ceas on the man for the Padres here today last start in St Louis a really hot humid day didn't go great four innings in a third four earned runs given up seven hits that broke up what had really been an outstanding run for CA 1880 already in a span of nine starts going back to early July before that outing in St Louis Tony what did you see from ceas in that outing against the Cardinals and how does he sort of get things back on track today I mean it's really been the case o over the last I don't know what four four starts I think for for Dylan since the no hitter uh he had the 5-2 third start right after that that was pretty good but he kind of lost command he only had the one inning of the the game that got rained out but then from there I think you've seen a a pretty consistent theme in terms of uh Dylan CE and why he hasn't thrown the ball as well and I think it starts with his command he just hasn't been able to command the fast ball the way he was when he was at the beginning of that stretch you were talking about and I think it's really a matter of him trying to trying to get that field back um I'm not sure if it's mechanical or how it may go but uh I I know certainly that is where it starts for for Dylan C's if he can get his command back uh you can look forward to seeing the dominant Dylan C's we've seen on the other side of this pitching match up for Tampa Bay right-hander Ryan pepio on the mound he's a good young right-hander part of the Tyler glass now trade part of the package that went from LA to Tampa Bay Tony what do you feel like are the keys today offensively against a good young right-hander in pepio yeah the good thing is the Padre's have some experience against pepio I think they've seen a lot of him especially last year when he was really forced into that rotation and uh what you has is a very talented High Velocity type arm um but you know sometimes the command can be an issue and not necessarily from a walk standpoint but you know being able to locate the pitches where he needs to in order to have success but you know for the Padres as I say often it doesn't really matter to them their their offense approach is going to stay the same I think you saw some bits of that La these last two games uh have kind of come into play in in different ways for him and I expect to see the same thing here today all right Tony very good stuff hope you enjoyed this final game of the road trip in Tampa Bay hopefully a Padres wi and a long flight back to San Diego we'll see at Petco Park tomorrow to wrap up this 18 game game in 18 days stretch as always thanks so much we'll talk to you and scan uh coming up around 10:50 as always thank you Tony no problem Zam all right that's Tony Gwyn Jr joining us on our eat SoCal Padre's pregame show here on the Padre's radio network as we get ready for the final and rubber game of this three- game series between the Padre's and the Tampa Bay Rays good news the last couple of days for the Padres is the well I guess you could say good news depending on how you look at at things but the Diamondbacks losing the last two days to the LA Dodgers Dodgers do have now a six-game lead on the Padre's in the division but the Padre's remain tied with the Diamondbacks for that top wild card spot and the spot that would host a wild card series when we get to the end of the year with the Diamondbacks losing yesterday so good opportunity like we've said throughout the last few days for the Padre's if they take care of business against the Rays and then the Tigers tomorrow good opportunity for the Padre's to pick up ground on somebody all you got to do is uh win today win tomorrow you're guaranteed to pick up at least some ground on the Diamondbacks or even jump ahead of the Diamond Backs and obviously on the Dodgers in the division as well depending on what happens in Arizona the next couple of days when we come back we'll hear from Padre's manager Mike schil we'll also go over the flurry of roster moves the Padre's made today they made a number of different moves things affecting the triaa team things affecting the major league team guys coming off the ilil ton of moves with rosters expanding today as we begin the month of September so we'll get to all that we'll hear from Alias Diaz coming up a little bit later as well we'll hear from Padre's reliever Alec Jacob who did a great job yesterday all that and more comeing your way as we walk you up towards first pitch for the finale of this three-game series on the Padre's Radio Network e e e e e ero water So Cal Padre's pregame show continues here on the Padre's radio network Sam levit with you Insider San Diego Studios as the Padre's get ready to take on the Tampa Bay Rays in the finale of this three game series finale of this seven game Road Trip Padre's come home beginning tomorrow for the start of a home stand against the Tigers and the Giants they play on Labor Day at 3:40 p.m. at Petco Park tomorrow sort of a weird scheduling thing where they have an off day in the middle of a series on Tuesday then finish up that series against the Tigers on Wednesday Thursday Giants in town Friday Saturday and Sunday so we will talk to you from Petco Park tomorrow but first things first we have the finale of this series coming up here in St Petersburg Florida as the Padre's take on the Tampa Bay Rays we here for Mike Schult coming up in just a moment first let's recap all the different roster moves the Padre's had today remember it is September 1st yes if you're waking up on this Sunday morning welcome to the month of September trust me I hard to believe but here we are in the month of September best time for baseball pennant raise time and also with September one comes expanded rosters 26-man rosters go to 28 man rosters here in the month of September so the moves for the Padre's today they had a lot of them let's go through each and every one throughout the organization Padre's optioning rightand to Randy Vasquez back to triaa El Paso Padre's recalled left-hander Tom Cosgrove from triaa El Paso so he's on the major league roster as of today the Padres selected the contract of Catcher Alias Diaz added him to the major league roster they also designated right-hander Lake Bacher for assignment so Lake Bacher dfade they also reinstated left-hander wandy Peralta from the 15-day iel so he is back on the 26-man roster as well the Padres also select the contract of Brandon Lockridge to the 40-man roster they optioned him to El Paso so he's still at AAA they transferred Steven Kik to the 60-day iel and they also signed infielder veteran infielder Nick Ahmed to a minor league contract so those were all the moves the Padre's made today again as far as guys that are now on the big league roster Tom Cosgrove Alias Diaz and wandy Peralta so you subtract Vasquez and then you add three to get to 28 Cosgrove Peralta and Diaz are now on the active 28 man roster as of today let's hear from Padre's manager Mike schil let's pull up a seat in the manager's office and here from pad R's manager Mike Schultz presented by sinley food spice up your culinary Life we'll do a little breakdown of Alias Diaz a little bit later before we hear from him he talked inside the Padre's Clubhouse earlier today but first here was Mike Schultz earlier today as the Padre's get ready to take on Tampa Bay on what the veteran catcher Alias Diaz brings to at the 2024 Padres experience for one you know he's an All-Star MVP so um you know guy's been in the league for a while and you I saw him when he came up with Pittsburgh and you know clearly a really plus Defender and you know shut down kind of arm and has been really productive with the bat and grown as a so he brings experience in depth you have three catchers that's sometimes a challenge to will he get some starts he'll get his opportunities we we'll uh take it day by day but he will get his opportunity you got some reinforcements in the bullpen couple lefties today does that do for you um well I mean you know yesterday again let's go back to our man um Alec Jacob did a great job to clean our Bullpen up and good to have Wy back you know we've missed him um you know better presence knows what this time of year looks like um so we're excited to have him back and healthy um you know with Tommy coming up again another reinforcement that we take advantage of the roster until we um we go about our rotation moving forward with that spot but uh yeah it allows us to have a deeper Bullpen hiy feeling any better all today he is he's feeling better uh texted with him this morning um and he's on the he's on the men it sounds like in terms of just Elias's ability to receive and frame he's gotten better that this year how is that going to help your staff um you know like he's a veteran guy that um receives the ball well and throws well so he's a veteran guy that knows how to call a game and and navigate a game so it can only help when he's when he's back there that was Padre's manager Mike schilz earlier today a lot of questions there on Elias Diaz and again we'll hear from Diaz coming up a little bit later along with padr reliever Alec Jacob you heard Mike schel talk about Jacob there what he did yesterday was very very important three and 2/3 Innings out of the bullpen meaning the Padre's didn't have to use another arm out of their pen sets up the Padre's really nicely for the final two games of this 18 game in 18-day stretch so the Padre should have a very fresh Bullpen today tomorrow and again right-hander Dylan CE on the mound for San Diego today let's tell you who's hot who's not which player is locked in at the dish who needs to kick things up on another notch this is who's hot who's not on the padr radio network we begin with a look at the hot category Luis zise 10 for 22 on this road trip he's hitting 348 in his last 21 gam zise back in the leadoff spot dhing today Manny Machado had a base hit yesterday hitting 368 in his last nine games with three home runs and three doubles Manny playing Third Base is in the cleanup spot today jerks and pro far for four yesterday he's Banning just 180 in his last 11 games he's in the not category today in fact if you go back a little bit farther Pro for hitting just 176 in his last 20 games and pro playing Left Field batting second today for the Padre's and that's a quick look at who's hot who's not as we get ready for first pitch coming up towards the top of the hour when we come back we'll hear from Alias Diaz the newest Padre the former Rocky the former pirate will also here from Padre's reliever Alec Jacob coming up a little bit later as well plus we update you on some of the injuries we give you the latest on you darish we'll have a full look at the out of town scoreboard our keys to the game and much much more to come final game of this three- game series between the Padres and the Tampa Bay Rays coming up in just a little bit on this Sunday in San Diego on the Padre's Radio Network e e e e e back here on the Padre's catcher alas Diaz in just a little bit we'll hear from Padre's reliever Alec Jacob our keys to the game and a full breakdown of a good pitching matchup today between right-hander Ryan pepio on the mound for the Rays and right-hander Dylan CE on the mound for the Padre's as always if you want to get involved on our pregame coverage you can do that in a variety of different ways you can tweet at me at Sammy Lev am mm y Lev Instagram DMS open as well Sammy live there too comment on our various video streams including on the 973 the fan YouTube channel let me know what is your key to today's series finale against Tampa Bay I may just read your key to the game coming up a little bit later on as well let's tell you about all the latest injury news who's in who's out this is the B Fulkerson injury report presented by sand Diego's Bulldog injury attorneys who hope you're never in an accident but if you are make B ferson the first call you make hit him up 247 at bon.com let's first get into who's in and who's out yandi Diaz of the Rays left Friday's game with a left knee injury he was out of the lineup yesterday he is back in the lineup today dhing and leading off for Tampa Bay so deaz is back for the ray wandy Peralta activated off the 15-day ilil today so Peralta back in the Padre's Bullpen other injury news for the Padre's today Steven cck transferred to the 60-day iel today and also the latest on U Darvish who we know pitched in a controlled minor league game in Peoria Arizona on Friday against Red's minor Leaguers through four Innings faced a total of 18 batters through 66 pitches he reported feeling well after the outing Padres still determining the next steps for darish but certainly what sounded like a very positive step in the right direction for you on Friday and that is the latest injury updates we have on darish uh we know tatis has been in Arizona at least as of a couple of days ago taking it bats and we know Hung Kim was taking swings and throwing as well so hopefully those three guys coming back pretty soon here it is worth noting as we read you off the flurry of roster moves the Padre's made earlier today Randy Vasquez among those moves being option down to AAA El Paso and what that would mean just in general is that somebody is going to have to take that rotation spot that Vasquez just pitched in yesterday so the question becomes will that be somebody else or will it be U darish returning I think that's a fair thing to wonder we'll see if you makes a rehab assignment an outing uh somewhere in the minor leagues he did throw 66 pitches on Friday in Arizona so he's at a spot where you could argue he would be in a pretty good place to come back to the major leagues again just speculating here but we'll see because somebody is going to have to make that start in the spot of Randy Vasquez and who knows maybe just maybe that'll be you darish again just speculation just talking things through but it is an interesting question as we move in to this coming week let's take a full look at the out of town scoreboard let's take a trip around the bigs and tell you about the scores you need to know in our outof town scoreboard presented by Jensen meet where great taste meets Integrity we have a couple of games going on right now in fact we have one game going on right now Brewers and the Reds in Cincinnati 3 to2 the Brewers leading in the fifth inning in that one everything else is coming up in a little while or a little bit later Mets say the white socks at 1110 in Chicago Cubs in the Nationals at 10:35 in DC Cardinals and the Yankees at 10:35 in New York Red Sox and the Tigers at 1040 in Detroit Pirates and the Guardians at 10:40 in Cleveland Royals and the Astros in Houston at 1110 Blue Jays and the twins in Minnesota at 1110 A's and the Rangers and Arlington at 1135 Orioles and the Rockies in Colorado at 1210 Marlins and the Giants at 105 in San Francisco Mariners and the angels at 107 in Anaheim the game you care most about Dodgers and the Diamondbacks at 110 in Arizona Braves and the Phillies in Philadelphia coming up later today at 400 p.m. and that's a full quick look at the out of town Scoreboard on this Sunday obviously the game that means the most right now to the Padres is that game between the Diamondbacks and the Dodgers coming up later in Arizona the Padre's entered today tied with the Diamondbacks for the national leagues top wild card spot I know by technicality they are in the number two spot but they're they're even so I say at this point they're even in the top wild card spot we'll see how it all shakes out at the end of the day but right now both those teams right with each other for that top spot Padre's now six games behind the LA Dodgers for first place in the National League West the Padre's again eight and eight in their last 16 games so they've cooled down a little bit after that uh really really hot start out of the All-Star break Padres you zoom out they are uh still 27 and 12 since the allstar break well one of the moves we talked about Randy Vasquez getting option to tripa El Paso earlier today but one of the more significant moves and and really most significant move today was the addition of Alias Diaz to the major league roster Diaz is a former All-Star game MVP won that award in the 2023 allstar game and a catcher who number one is known for being a good defensive catcher and number two also has quite a bit of Pop we've seen him with the Rockies the last handful of years had 14 home runs 72 RB hit 267 with the Rockies in 2023 2021 he hit 18 home runs 44 RB 18 doubl so he has pop he does hit home runs he is a very good defensive catcher and we'll see how Alias deaz uh gets into the mix at catcher here remember the Padre's have Kyle higashioka who's played a lot they have Luis campusano who's played a lot so it will be pretty interesting to see how the Padres work Alias Diaz in to this now thre man catching rotation Alias Diaz was in the Padre's Clubhouse earlier today he spoke with the media here was Diaz alongside interpreter Pedro Gutierrez what what does it feel like to to be here two weeks ago let go now you're here contending team well just I'm happy for this new opportunity to get back in the major leagues and you know just say thank God for this chance I get to join this ball club and let's go obviously you know a lot of guys in here who have you known best over the years in the major leagues so for well there's several players that that they've known from this B Club literally those from Venezuela I even played with Joe mro in Pittsburgh so that that's something good uh I I don't feel completely lost in this new Clubhouse so that's something good so I just I just feel like this is a good opportunity to to get into this F this you play a difficult position what do you think you can bring to this club can you catch right away get familiar with the pitchers like how much of a challenge will that be for [Music] [Music] well yeah I mean obviously I I have a lot of experience and just being able to get to this ball Club I know that it can catch I know what it can do I know I've been able to do it for several years and I know I have to just get adjusted to the system here with Sano pades but I know it can definitely help out if it need to be without behind the plate I I I'm ready for that how energizing is it to know that you are now part of a playoff race here in the final month of the season yeah it's very important they've never been to the playoffs they have zero postseason experience so just the fact that I've been able to get to this ball Club right now help this team win hopefully yeah we we want to reach playoff that's a goal that was new Padre's catcher Alias Diaz earlier today inside the Padre's Clubhouse Diaz not in the starting lineup for the Padre's today but we'll see when he makes his Padre's debut could be a very uh nice piece to uh this Padre's team again the Padre's now carrying three catchers in higashioka campusano and now Diaz and again a reminder The rosters expand to 28 players as of today on September 1st we'll he from Padre's reliever Alec Jacob up coming up a little bit later as well first pitch coming up towards the top of the hour in St Petersburg Florida series finale between the Padre's and the Tampa Bay Rays let's give you our keys to today's game how will the Padres unlock a victory in today's game these are the keys to the game presented by Honor Buick GMC Hummer in National City key number one a deep outing from Dylan CE the Padre's could re really use a great lengthy start from Dylan C today now their Bullpen is fresh no reliever aside from Alec Jacob pitched yesterday but still the Padres starting pitching has had some hiccups lately Randy Vasquez gave up nine runs yesterday Michael King and Dylan CE both didn't get out of the fifth inning in their last starts in St Louis Padre's it feels like could sure use that dominant version of cease today to secure a winning road trip let's be honest about it this is a road trip four games against the team in St Louis hovering around 500 three games against the team hovering around 500 in Tampa Bay you want to go on a winning road trip here when you're in the midst of a pretty tight playoff race Dylan ceas having a good deep dominant outing today that's key number one key number two low La doesn't matter slow him down I'm talking about Brandon Lao and Josh low both spelled l we why I bring them up well they've both been really good so far in this series and both are hitting in the top four of Tampa Bay's lineup today Brandon La has four hits in this series a double and an RBI Josh low has four hits in this series including a double a triple and an RBI low is nine for his last 19 with a double triple two home runs and three RB in that span so slowing down the mix of LA and low might get him confused used both spelled lwe a big key in today's game they have a combined eight hits in the first two games of this series and key number three get to pepio at home it's a tough task race starter Ryan pepio has an 081 in his last four starts at home at the trop so a big key today the Padre's getting to pepio early and it kind of goes along with my key with still in CE can the Padre's grab an early lead CE be the dominant Dylan CE and I don't want to say Cruz but have a lead don't play from behind make it a a sort of easy win if you will in Tampa Bay that's what to uh keep your eye on in today's game our keys to the game when we return we tell you what to watch for in today's game we hear from Alec Jacob who did a really nice job in yesterday's game out of the Padre's Bullpen and a full breakdown of the starting pitching match up between Dylan CE and Ryan pepio we go out to Bob scanlin and Tony Gwyn Jr in just a little bit more than 10 minutes on the Padre's Radio Network e e e e e AR R water SoCal Padre's pregame show continues here on the Padre's radio network Sam love it with you inside our San Diego Studios as we get ready for this series finale between the padr r and the Tampa Bay Rays we go out to Bob scanlin and Tony Gwyn Jr at the trop in St Petersburg Florida in just about 8 minutes San Diego County Toyota dealers are proud partners of the Padre's and supporters of the San San Diego community and we would like to especially recognize and honor the men and women who serve our country on this military Sunday thank you and go Padres let's tell you what to watch for in this series finale what's the one thing Sam levit will be keeping his eye on in today's game this is what to watch for presented by Genesis Home Improvements San Diego's trusted painting Roofing and window company save 15% today on a new beginning for your home visit Genesis Home Improvements sd.com what to watch for in today's game Junior Camero of the Tampa Bay Rays baseball's number one overall Prospect right now hit his first home run at Tropicana Field yesterday he has six extra base hits including three home runs six RB in his last eight games during that eight game stretch cero has put 25 balls in play 13 of them had an ex at velocity of 100 mph or greater that is tied for the fifth most balls put in play of 100 mph or greater in that span so keep an eye on Camero today he's a really good young player you may not know a whole lot about him yet he is batting third playing Third Base today for the Rays can the Padre's limit Camero he's hitting the ball well right now very very good young player that's what to watch for in today's game that matchup between CE and Camero we'll preview Today's starting pitching matchup including Dylan CE in just a moment first I wanted to revisit some of what Alec Jacob Padre's relever had to say after yesterday's game he did a really nice job three and two thirds Innings out of the bullpen he made sure the Padre's didn't have to use any other reliever in yesterday's game he threw 48 pitches the second most he's thrown in any game this season including his time at Triple A here was Alec Jak up inside the clubhouse after yesterday's outing yeah I mean I I was obviously just prepared for you know whatever they were going to give me but uh yeah you know that's Longs side of my career sure that's a you know and not what I anticipated but at the same time like I was you know was efficient in the first three and gave myself a chance to go out there for that last one and help this team any way I can so I was really thankful for that what have you liked when you've come up here these two times this year the about what you've been able to execute yeah um I feel like I'm you know I'm just I'm getting I'm getting bad swings getting whff and uh you know I'm feel like I'm still getting those same swings that I was doing at the lower level and I feel so you know it really helps my confidence I like you know doesn't really matter who I'm facing I can still get the chase get the whiff and uh get get anybody out that it's up there considering you got here so quickly so soon before the game and then you get in the coll when the game starts and then you're in the game almost immediately is there an adrenal adrenaline rush to come with that absolutely so much adrenaline yeah um not you know not a ton of sleep but I I got some caffeine and you know the adrenaline kicks in and yeah we're from there on honestly you don't even really notice it and you're just you're dialed in you're ready to go and how proud of you the way your change up has acted when you've been up here very very happy with my change up um yeah especially when I when I keep it down to the Zone it's really played well for me and uh it's proven that it's a weapon so that was Alec Jacob yesterday inside the Padre's Clubhouse very nice job from Jacob in yesterday's game Let's preview Today's starting pitching match up between Dylan C San oryan pepio let's take a look at
