UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster talks Hawai’i win, issues to clean up, game ball

[Music] it start um didn't really start the first half the way that we wanted to but I was just glad that the way they came out the second half came out execut it was about us more than exactly what they were doing to us so I just like that my guys came out and fought hard and continued to play and we were able to get Victory what's time of your emotions after this one um I was just happy to get the victory you know that was really it it was it was really emotional in there so it was just big that I was able to get a victory on my first game but I'm just glad that a lot of the players were you know putting on themselves to help me get that Victory did somebody give you a game ball yeah Martin did was he said that he got CH up that you got checked up was that like you know it was just the whole emotion of the game you know I kind of kept a lot of stuff bottled in into this so you know I didn't want to just be out there all emotional but you I was really excited that we got first Victory and just the way the guys played you know didn't really go exactly the way we wanted the first half but the second half they kept fighting kept playing you know we execute job with with Ethan in the first half um was that nerves what do you think was going on and then the second half it seemed like he settled down just you know first game Jitters you know just how it goes but I was just glad like like you said second half he came out there you saw Ethan Carver so you know he played a good good game he kept everybody uh on offense up being ready to go and you know they continue to fight and Mak Place how you kind of reconcile pulling it out versus you know obviously some things that didn't go the way you wanted especially in the first half I mean this is the only thing that really matters that you want or do you have some concerns about some of the things that Happ no there's most definitely concerns but I'm glad we have a bu so go into the week and try to address some of those issues that we had but you know I think we we addressed some of it in the second half that's what we were able to execute but a lot of stuff we were just you know guys emotions just getting caught up in the situation just weren't able to execute the way they wanted second second half they kind of settle down went your way the defense really stiffened I think you only gave up 100 yards in the second half and then Rico Flores one good play after another yeah Rico came out and played a great great game especially in the second half but our defense you know they were reserved you know they played hard the whole time they kept coming off the sideline and telling the offense we got your back we're fighting for you there was no biger between the two so I just love the way that they F the way they they approach the game and the way they be executed does the team ATM have what was said that you know game guys were listening cuz you know we were shooting ourselves in the foot it was kind of us what we were doing you know Hawaii has a great team they played hard and did a great job at this game you know but we still wanted to go out there and play our brand of football and I don't think we really showed that in the first half and the second half we came out and you know we able to score some points get some stops and pulled up about the def like specifically about the last why def KJ Wallace flying around the whole day he did a great job um I think we had what five sacks five sacks a lot of tack for loss I would say it was double digit so you know defense did a great job they were balling and um I'm just glad that you know we had a lot of guys that contined to fight fight you I can't keep saying it enough but this team was zilant and you can really see first time handling like the game management stuff want to ask you about a couple of those the fourth downall in the first Drive uh what was the decision making there and then the field goal where you came out you looked like you were maybe going to go for it and then KCK the field goal just I just wanted to try you know keep the momentum and keep going that was basically it really but um other than that I felt that we could have hit that field goal so that's why we for and the early fourth down on the first drive just wanted to go for it how about the uh play where they lined up for the font and then they had nothing but open field and got the first down was that just a blown sment no we had n so it was nine out on the field we had double numbers two players were trying to get their jerseys on could get the Jersey on in time and didn't get out there so it was unfortunate that they but it was double Jersey how do you feel they did kind of hit in the pillars in this game uh the first pillar we probably going to have to work on that a lot just a discipline but I think the second half was a little bit better there wasn't any un Sportsman like abilities I mean we had one hands to the face but you know that's just kind of punching Maybe duck or something like that but I need to watch that but there was no um just bonehead plays you know not penalties that you're just seeing guys out there playing with no discipline so I'm okay with that but we we got to get it you know I'm glad we have a bike so we have a lot of stuff to address and these guys are going to be hungry to address that what you do uh you going to stay till tomorrow to uh kind of enjoy Hawaii a little bit where you um probably just eat together we have dinner tonight so we'll just eat eat dinner tonight and know just get some rest these guys are still in kind of cat so it's not really much we're not out here just to V I just I just kind of just kept it it was the wi's trip so I st two more questions can you describe what a trip like this could do for a young team long trip Hawaii come back withn like this this is exactly what we needed going into what we're about to go to you know we got a lot of road games coming up got going be hostile environments hot you know it's going to be uncomfortable so I'm just glad that these guys you know they they fought through and weathered the storm you know it was it was a lot you know Hawaii has a good team that's not a bad team and they so they played hard they kept fighting they never gave up so I'm just glad that my guys were able to continue to fight and execute the way that we did in the second half they got any early injury updates on any of the guys who went down Reuben especially Reuben went down he seemed fine I just talked to him so I think he'll be okay um but other guys were cramping so little B and see D to be okay it was just a how did the practice the mechanics of your first game as said coach communicating with the other coaches you know knowing where to stand and stuff like that how did that go for everything was good with the communication thank you thanks appreciate it
