Pat Toomey Sim at the U.S Capitol is coming to an end the junior Senator here in Pennsylvania talked with our Washington D.C Bureau reporter Rachel Knapp looking back on his two terms as a senator talking about his legacy in Washington and what's next for him after 18 years in Congress six spent in the house and 12 in the Senate senator Pat Toomey is wrapping up his time in the capital very comfortable with my decision a strong believer in term limits he decided to not rerun we spoke with him on his legacy in the capital he says one of his biggest accomplishments was the 2017 tax reform he says whether you're a supporter or detractor of it it was the most sweeping tax reform since the mid-80s it's also just an economic fact that in 2019 you know the First full year after full implementation we had the best economy of my lifetime record low unemployment record low African-American unemployment record low Hispanic unemployment the economy was growing he's also played a central role in Hot Topic issues like the recent gun legislation Congress passed after mass shootings in Buffalo New York and Uvalde Texas to me leaves Congress as the Senate banking committee's ranking member the committee focuses on issues related to banking Insurance financial markets housing Urban Development trade and economic policy but he also focused on issues important to Northwest PA making sure that the Army Corps of Engineers prioritizes Presque Isle Dune replacement sand replacement and made sure we're maintaining that um work to make sure that we're doing our best and and putting resources into keeping Asian carp out of Lake Erie the language in the tax reform that created opportunity zones the City of Erie has done arguably more than any other opportunity Zone maybe in America and that's really really promising as for what's next to me tells me that's still up in the air but he has a message for his fellow pennsylvanians how grateful I am to have been given the honor to represent this great state of ours in you know arguably the world's most important deliberative body it's been a tremendous honor and tremendous responsibility I've been very grateful for it at the Capitol Rachel Knapp reporting
