Was Ron Rivera’s Biggest Draft Regret Taking Chase Young over Justin Herbert? | All Facts No Brakes

just speaking of the draft coach you once held the the the number two pick like the Washington commanders have now you took Chase young with that pick in 2020 why things didn't what is it that made the things not work out the way you probably envisioned for chaseing Washington I think the most unfortunate thing was the knee injury you know here's a young man that's had so much success throughout his entire career and I think the knee injury was something that really set him back it was a little more severe Than People realize you know we we didn't want to put it all out there yeah um he did everything he could to try and get himself back to where he needs to be you started to see flashes of it glimpses of of it and it was really one of those things that it it was a it was a pretty serious injury and it takes a little bit longer some not everybody can be an AP and come back in eight months they just can't it's just it takes time and that that's one of the things I think for Chase it took a little bit more time than people expected but he still has an opportunity he did some nice things San Francisco he had he had a pretty solid game in the Super Bowl you know had the first sack of the game so this is a guy that still has it and again I think again we'll find out if he if he's that guy that that we had hope he'd become with New Orleans now so at that time though and and defensive minded coaches for whatever reason always like defensive players right they look at him and they go I like him on the defensive Side Y but that same year there was quarterbacks that in Tu yep as well as Justin Herbert Justin Herbert exactly do you look back at that now and say well we needed a quarterback but I'm a defensive minded coach and I have a certain style that I wanted to play I wanted to run the ball I want to play defense and I needed a guy that quarterback wise could just move the thing along opposed to this franchise quarterback when you look at that draft coming out he was rated in some situations as the best player sometimes yeah and so you know looking at it says this is a guy that can impact you on the defense side and he had that rookie year where he was rookie Defensive Rookie MVP so a lot of those things pointed towards him being the next pick if not the first pick and for us you know our decision once we got near the close to the draft was how were we going to be able to do that um if if if if he's sitting there at number two we got to take him and not just because you know he's the best player on the board but because at that time he was a guy that could impact your team through his defensive play that was the mentality going into the traft and so we did it that way um the thing you would have liked it seen is also we didn't have an opportunity to go through OTAs and mini camp pic exactly so that really kind of impacted some of our decision- making on some of the other picks we made during the draft as well because we weren't quite sure what we had on our football team well n every NFL team as players that they wish they could go back and draft given the opportunity uh is there a player in mind that you think think that you like maybe should have drafted or someone you know Kiki I think when you go back and you look at you know what happened in that draft you know in the 2020 draft and how they are now I mean because hindsight is 2020 but Justin Herbert is a name that that pops up you know that you think about here's a prolific style Pastor who's really shown everybody what he's capable of more so anything else and so you know being hindsight yeah you could do you could that's a guy you could go back and say hey I'd love to have that guy but again we drafted uh we we drafted Chase because we believe that this was a guy that could help impact the team um from his defensive position and again as I said he did do that his rookie year so everything we thought we saw initially you know I'm I I guess I'm it's a weird it's weird and I grew up under the tutelage of Bill parcel and Bill bich so my thought process it's like a a pyramid I'm I'm I'm part of the limb and the tree with those guys mine I think like them like you might think like coach dick certain sense and when I look at it and I look I just look at my career and I look at the quarterbacks I played 11 years and I played with 17 18 different quarterbacks and we won a lot of games I never played with a Hall of Fame quarterback but we won and so when I look at I say a guy who sets The Edge a guy who protects a guy who shuts a guy down a guy who can go catch it those are my staple players and then at the quarterback I don't need Justin Herbert I could just have a guy that's not gonna get a ball to the other team and in the end I'm G be in the tournament right and so when everybody says well Justin Herbert Justin I'm like do you really wna Justin her it would be nice to have him but you could do just as well with a brock py but I think at the same time though is if if you if you get to the point where you don't have to rely on just Justin and I think that's what's happened is what you need is and I and and I know Brock prie doesn't like the word but you need a game man manager well I didn't want to use manager I just said a guy that won't get a B the other team but but but but the truth is if you look at a really really good quarterback and I'm gonna use Tom Brady as an example if you watch the way Tom plays he can take over a game at any time okay but he manages those games yes he manages those games and when he has to he takes it over and it's the same thing with with Patrick Mahomes he has that ability to manage a game manage and then he takes it over Okay so to me when you use the word oh he's a game manager that can take a game over that's what you need in my opinion and so I try to you know look at and say how many game managers are there how many guys that can take a game and manage it manage it and then all of a sudden hey it's time to score let's go take it over not very many no but those are Patrick Mahomes yeah okay Brock pie for the most part I think is a game manager with that same ability he can take a game over and he showed his abilities and he and again he'll continue to grow he's still young yes you know and again let's remember this is only going he'll be going into his third season this is a guy I think that eventually has a bright future and and and to me hey embrace the fact that you have that game manager ability but you also have the ability to take it over we
