Why the Cats shouldn't chase rival stars like Bailey Smith & Clayton Oliver - Footy Classified

footy on Thursday night of the cats was alarming uh Chris Scott was asked a little bit about the resting players policy after the game there's always a little bit more to it than just um you know voluntarily leaving guys out that are in tiptop shape maybe there is an element of not quite having the cohesion that we'd like at the moment but um again not something we're going to make snap decisions on or Give opinions on right now I I led him for the way he manages his list I'm not going to hammer him when he leaves players out he's smart you don't take guys live with that's right so he's fantastic with the way they do it he wins premierships because of it but I'm looking ahead to the end of the year uh do they go a Bailey Smith or trying to get a Clayton ol or do you think I wouldn't I know I know the Chris Scott will probably go that way CU he's a type of Coach who's always done it that way but I look at the future of this Midfield at jalong and saw it up against the Gold Coast Suns and I I don't think they're the answer those guys I think they need to try and get a if they see it's a strong draft this year I think they need to look to the Future and say Dangerfield's going Mitch Duncan's going uh and we don't need to bring players in with baggage who were going to give up so first their first round pick for bayy Smith you'd rather them take that to the draft and to even see if they can try and do more and just get they haven't had good picks since Joel sward or n cocka too it's been okay for them but I think the future looks they done an amazing job with the picks they have had they have had and they spor in generational players in Jeremy Cameron and Dangerfield but I think the draft's important for him car an NT 20th team still a long way away You' ever the Suns have got to seize the moment and own that market and find a way to put more content there it won't be easy because it'll come at the expense of Heartland in the go Coast they've won the last six in Darwin it is an unbelievable onfield competitive Advent so 12,000 there they got a government to fish into with funding to get more independent of the AFL and playing volume of games here is going to be tricky I can't imagine anyone wants to sell them a a glorified away game anymore those days feel like they're over but they got to find a way to get minimum two and up to four into that market because they are powerful there and there is a market to develop for them no that's a good point and also of course they've got so many Northern Territory players because of that those draft advantages they received a few years ago they did make the most of that could be the difference between the making the files a lot this year getting the content they have into D this year you asked a great question on the weekend of Scott Pendery in an interview on 3w that magp were magnificent and Pen's first quarter was one of the Catalyst but before that as he contemplates retirement and the coaching career he's working closely with Matthew lloy as an assistant at Hal liury he was asked about the chasm between or the gap between media money and assistant coaching more broadly had a fascinating Insight financially for an assistant coach it's nowhere near where it should be in my eyes for for the amount of work that they do I know senior coaches get paid really well but to me I'm not sure why we want to cap having great people in our game and put a limit on how good our teams can get and our players can get and yeah and I probably found myself asking the same question that youve asked their car is why is there so many great players sitting up doing the commentary work instead of being at cluband where I know that' be a valuable asset I mean the two most obvious ones at the moment are Luke Hodge and Joel cwood and um Matthew you love coaching but you're not a CO you're only a part-time coach with respect because you've got a very very big job in the media and there were so many other names I mean Jonathan Brown there's such a long list of them you know lion years before that and I'm shocked to think that none of those BLS who I think are the most competitive people I've ever seen want to coach anymore I just wonder what a club will do because this is different this is a guy who has said his whole career I want to be an AFL senior coach nobody else I think Sam Mitchell Adam Simpson probably the previous two that I've ever heard and they've gone on and done it just wonder what a club will be doing or I wonder if there's a club Behind the Scenes right now saying we can make him an offer he can't refuse I'm talking to guarantee him a your job that's what I'd nearly do well in the days of before the soft cap I mean someone like Sam Mitchell went over to West Coast on a lot of money because they could afford it and Michael Vos before him never ended up going but was offered a lot of money do you think he's good enough now and he's tactical now some what you s him at school for a club to guarantee him the next coaching job uh yeah I think he sees the game like talking to the AFL players they still say we're a worst side when he leaves the field so against Hawthorne when he HT his ribs in gather round they said we fell apart with him came off the field that's how good he is
