for is first pitch coming at you right after the break [Music] hello and welcome thanks for joining us the show brings you the national league Wild Card series it's the San Diego Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks John shamie and Chris Singleton on the call and we're just about set to get this wild card series underway singy game one has outsized importance in a three-game set yeah boo it's a huge game there's no doubt about it players are always talking about setting the tone in game one of a series well in a three- game series that might be the only tone that gets set so this is no ordinary series opener and we'll be back for the first pitch right after this just about set to go now our starting pitcher in this one Merill Kelly it's always interesting to see how he utilizes all of his pitches and how many of those he has a good feel for on that given day when he's right he's really able to keep hitters guessing and all of his stuff seems to be coming out of the same arm slot the same tunnel and that can make life very diff on his opponents and that's downstairs and [Applause] outside check swing and that's a Ball's a bad ball hitter so even if you get him to chase pitches outside the Zone he still might beat you not an easy out by any means fouls one off two and two and here it comes swings and misses struck him out now the number two hitter Jackson ground ball Walker and he handles it himself for the [Applause] out as we take a look at the Padre's lineup Chris this is a lineup offensively that could be really good for years to come they're deep first and foremost but the way that they can manipulate their personnel for matchups and everything else and there's the third out that'll do it for the inning back here in Chase Field and today's starting pitcher Chris Sail well sail's a strikeout pitcher and the thing about it is he'll throw strikes early but then start teasing the zones and that's what the Great do you got to make sure you elevate him get him out over the plate that's the only way you're going to have a chance and George makes the grab Bogart's retired and there's one down now the Diamondbacks lineup as put together by Tory lello the Sluggers in this lineup might not be too happy about the fact that the wind is blowing in today Chris yeah and you hear pitchers talk about how good it feels when the wind is at their back and for hitters you almost feel like Beyond just the pitcher cominging at you you got this other four coming against you so important to try to get on top of the ball in terms of hitting line drives you know maybe really hard ground balls with a good exit velocity that'll get you a base hit because it's very frustrating you just hit one on the screws think it's going to go out of the ballpark and a guy is camped underneath it in front of the warning track two out space is empty and a swing in a miss going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball light drive base hit and that keeps the inning alive hitting is really easy for some guys one thing that I can see already his Bat stays in the Zone on plane for an extended period of time and guys like that they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane and even when you you don't get it great it's Rudder takes off pitch in for a strike go to second that was close but stat cast shows us why he so often seems to be on the safe side of these steel attempts Chris yeah you see that plus speed and he needed cut on and Miss struck him out and that's the third out and welcome back to the ballpark new inning getting started stepping in the long ball threat Shawn Meyer and a foul ball let's talk about great individual postseasons one that really sticks out to me is Ricky Anderson in 1989 he hit 441 with three homers and 11 stolen bases leading Oakland to a World Series Championship the wi of the pitch that one missed man when I think about great postseason performances hard to top cardos Beltran in 200 four eight homers and six steals in 12 games with the Houston Astros he didn't even get to play in the World Series that year that's a [Applause] hit so up next Destiny Lockwood one of the best contact hitters in the sport as well outstanding on the defensive end fought off foul [Applause] ground ball could be two there's one out to Walker and that's two very composed play from the shortstop position right there and that was a perfect decision go ahead take it yourself get to second and then fire to First make sure you get those two outs Will Smith the batter now as he swings and misses for strike one two outs keeps the it back going with a foul [Applause] ball and that's off the Inside Edge and the count is one and [Applause] two to third Zips it across and they get the out on Smith bottom of the second here's the left fielder Lis Gorel Jr a big swing in a Miss sail multitime Allstar he features a four seam fast ball a slider a change up and he works in a sinker SS through the fast B up in the zone James Kingsley working the plate Kingsley is pretty well respected around the league yeah when you talk to players I think consistently he is one of the guys you hear compliments about players appreciate the job he does back there yeah that's kind of all you can ask for really just a fair chance to go out and have success here's Ryan Mount [Applause] Castle that one's in there o and one o and one right through there for a strike love how vocal the Umpire is today no doubt in the hitter's mind catcher mind and even the pitcher mind has to the conviction in the call fights that one away and the count remains 0 and [Applause] two sail delivers a swing and a miss one out oh I'm not sure what he was waiting on right there he got the change up and still late on it you rarely see that it almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up I mean if you can't catch up to the off speed stuff no way you're going to touch a fast ball Randle gritch now first pitch just misses guel at first one gone that one ripped but [Applause] foul the pitch swing and a miss and that strike two they can live up in the zone all game if hitters will chase it that's just too much velocity hitters got to look down in the [Applause] zone sail ready fights that one away still one and two [Applause] and the Pitch hit on the ground might be two out of second they get one and that's two one hit in the on to the third inning here's the center fielder Fernando tatis Jr Fernando tatis J Kelly back to work strike one this guy who grew up in Big League clubhouses got to be a nice feeling singy when your father played the big leagues and he passes down all that wisdom next offering is down low I can only imagine the Comfort level of being in the ballpark for those kids who are fortunate enough to have a dad that played in the big leagues then being on the baseball field for some it's pressure for them they feel that they are right at home Bo that's staying within his game right there I mean this Speedster gets the infield single and now he's on base to possibly do some damage I love seeing what guys like this can do to disrupt the game once they get in a position to do so and that one finds its way through the throw to third he's in there everything came together for him timing on the swing was good able to shoot the ball up the middle didn't square up as much as he probably would have liked but that's a good approach paying off runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game eggy Rosario at the plate now that's ball one swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the Zone the pitch now it's beled deep to left way out of here home run he powers that one out of here and that's how they take the lead it's three nothing the ab absolutely crushed that one no doubt about that one boo we knew it wasn't coming [Music] back that's exactly the pitch he was looking for crushes it and hits it out of the ballpark so the lineup flips over next for the Padres Christian Yelich and first off r is fouled off leftand hitter Waits Line Drive come on that swing right there tells me he's seeing the ball pretty well I know it didn't produce a hit but he made Solid contact and that's all you're looking to do anytime you're at the plate and a foul ball so we're getting a postseason matchup with team from the same division and I think these matchups are great because both teams know each other really really well no secrets no unknowns nothing like that just go out and play and let the best team win ball a strike the pitch and that one fouled off already three runs across in the frame here in game one up and in and that's ball two [Music] line drive and that'll get down for a base hit so they get a man aboard with a one out single so much a good hitting is finding holes in the defense that's why you're always thinking line drive into the Gap those kinds of swings really boost your confidence and now they've got some speed on first so one it second and it's a double play to in the inning so a three-run shot for the Padre's here it's now three nothing set for the bottom of the third now the third baseman Emmanuel Rivera there's the strike well after scor runs this is where you're looking for that shut down inning get that hot team back in there to swing the bats swing and a ground ball out to short throws across the diamond and a quick out number one Gabrielle Moreno getting ready to hit right through there for a strike Moreno a former Gold Glove winner hitting ninth in today's lineup and he was born in [Applause] Venezuela hit weakly on the ground the throw to first and a couple of quick outs number two sander Bogart now good slider inside right there batter fighting the there just rolled over it got the ground ball that's a strike oh one's the count the Padre's leading by three here in game one of the wildcard series and a popup right side foul territory Rosario makes the play and the inning is over game one of this wildcard series now the DH for the Padres Shawn Meyer and the first pitch misses for ball one [Applause] warning track wall and you can touch them all baseball man a gigantic blast and they add to their lead it's 4 nothing already playing with the lead and now they're celebrating a home run they're having a great time out there [Applause] just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone's attention got a pitch to drive short to the baseball squared it up and the backs spin carried it out of here and now it's going to be Destiny Lockwood going gone and they add a run it's five zip that's their third home run of the game they're having a lot of fun at the plate in this one they've got the long ball working for them on autopilot backto back Jacks and this club is fired up right now boo I mean this is the kind of thing where you really start to notice hitters in a lineup feeding off each other and the collective confidence just continues to grow Barts makes the catch one away so with one down it'll bring up Fernando tatis [Applause] Jr late on that fast ball well sigy this is a guy that grew up in big clubhouses and it's something that you see throughout the game this one swung on and hit well way back there and into the pool it's out of here their third home run of the inning it's 6 nothing that's their fourth home run of the game they can't stop and they won't stop hitting home run Luis fro on the pitch here he's into the game of the base is empty that one the other way pulls it down and they're two away it's never fun going back to the Dugout after hitting the line drive that finds a glove but you will get some high fives you know when you make great contact you feel like you've done everything right but in this game of baseball not everything is in your control foul ball look out that ball was smoked man I am so relieved that they have this netting down the lines just ensure safety for the fans last thing is a player you want to look up and see a fan get hit the other way no trouble here nice but it can be challenging for some pitchers I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse go after hitters and get quick outs fou back ourway and that's out of play the onew swings through that one it's a strike out really love the pitch sequence right there I'm telling you what pitcher and catcher are on the same page right now this is Corbin Carell and he's already singled in this game that one inside ball one I can't play around with him here see six-run lead at this point got to attack hitters even if you give up a solo Shot line they're all getting into the action it's starting to feel like a home run derby up [Applause] here let's break out the stat cast numbers and singy it tells us this home run was projected at more than 450 ft yeah and not many players can hit home runs as far as this one that's a special feeling and I'm sure he was giggling a little bit as he was J around the bases that was one heck of a swing he put on the basball BR puts it away for the out and there's two down Shawn Meyer the next to hit he's already Homer here in this one and first off ring is fouled off the Padres up big in this one and we're in the top of the fifth and ball one swings through that clearly was sitting on a fast right there just ended up out the front of the slider hey you can't fault him for his commitment now he's just going to have to battle two strikes swing and a miss struck him out the Padres get one in the inning with a solo blast it's now 7 nothing this is the national league Wild Card series on the show e back here at Chase Field now the left fielder lordis Gorel Jr lined and that's a base hit and the lead off man aboard just so sound in his mechanics hits again a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field Mount Castle stands in here leaves that one off the [Applause] inside in the air left field yich should have it squeezes [Applause] it man at first Randall G CH will hit next 0 for one so far that's in for a strike if I'm at the dish right now I am aggressive over the heart of the plate this guy's been filling up the strike zone so you know you're going to get a good pitch to hit and as nasty as his stuff is you might as well take all three swings and that one hammered Yelich ranging back and he brings it in the warning track man boo I love watching it Outfield Felder take on the wall to make that play and it's a lot easier to watch from up here because that can be painful in the end you know the walls coming up on you quickly so you have to maintain concentration in able to make that catch and hold on to it after contact two outs that one fouled [Applause] off and a swing in a miss and that's that so they've been held all right we go to the top half of inning number six and now destiny Lockwood and the first pitch misses for ball one activity in the Arizona Bullpen Ryan Thompson up and loosening in the pen and it's fouled [Applause] away and the pitch out to Center drivs towards it he's there he's got it one up one down and up to the plate is Will Smith freas a 63 righty 245 lb and he was born in the Dominican Republic righty to the pl swing and a popup foul territory for the catcher Mareno drifts towards it and that's a foul ball the 1-1 and it goes just [Music] foul one down base is empty down looking frustrating end to the atat for the hitter and I'm sure that's going to sit on him for a little while you want to be ready to hit the fast sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there tatis stands in here tried to hold back his swing there but went around two down nobody on and we're in the top half of the [Applause] six outside going to count one and two [Applause] up the middle into the Outfield base hit so he gets on base and keeps it going and his hot hitting continues they kept him in the yard that time but all he's doing now is passing the Baton and everything seems to get started around this guy to the air right field tracks it down for the out and that is and welcome back to the ballpark bottom of the sixth inning now Gabrielle Moreno and that's in for a strike it really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today good fast ball excellent slider but they've not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there no balls two strikes and he'll Che ball one there and down on strikes one away oh just a beautiful fast ball on the inside corner for that backwards k right there I think the hitter saw it all the way coming from that opposite arm angle so I got to think he was looking away and just got locked up by the hard stuff boring in on his hands Barts in the box now no balls in a [Applause] strike swing and a miss as he was late that time well he just threw that fast ball by elevated and if you're not looking up in that location very difficult to catch up to especially with that velocity and the pitch and a foul ball he stays alive foul ball still ow and two B is empty one away here in game one of this three game set battling here as he fouls it [Applause] away the wi in the pitch knocks that one away and we'll do it [Applause] again on the ground to third tosses to first so they get the out after a long battle at the PL two out Bas is empty Faldo Pomo stands in now for the Diamondbacks lifted in the air right center field flashes the leather on the run a catch and that top of inning number seven and here's the first baseman eggy Rosario and that one is inside ball one Bo he never moved cuz he never had time to but that kind of velocity you'd prefer that pitcher work away up the middle and that one finds its way through and that turns the lineup [Applause] over so the batting order turns over Christian Yelich digs in [Applause] now and first offering is fouled off [Applause] the pitch now Fly ball to Right Center sizes this one up calls it in for the out and there's one away that it first so digging in now for San Diego Jackson he's already homered in this game and first offering is fouled off [Applause] righty delivers just missed the Padres up big in this one here in the late stages of game one and strike two one ball two strikes and he deals and there's [Applause] ball flyball down the line Carrol pulls that one down that's out number [Applause] two and it'll be George Springer to step to the plate 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out swing and that ball smashed on the line Carell brings it in with a nice running grab Padre's leave one and they hold a seven nothing [Applause] [Music] lead and we're backing Corin Carol the right fielder notice how they're swinging too early or too late that's a timing problem they need to guess right on a few of those pitches and I mean make an educated guess here comes a pitch that one finds the zone and it's O and one this pitcher has done a good job of disrupting the hitters timing with the mix of pitches and changing speeds you want to keep that front foot inconsistent for the batter their swings are hesitant and that's exactly what you want on the mount on the ground to third throws to First in time and one away in the bottom of the seven well he's doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball good execution Walker in now takes ball one off the plate one out base is [Applause] empty right through there for a strike he's gotten into a really good Rhythm set down seven in a row he just wants to get the baseball and delivered as quickly as possible keep the momentum going on the ground right side throws to first two up two down the batter here's lordis guel Jr lordis gel that one's in there and another Homer her second home run of the game it's 9 nothing a good hitter gets pitch recognition early she saw exactly where that was going to be the challenge not get over anxious and come out of [Applause] homer this to third tosses across the first first and they take care of tatis for the out deceptive slider right there stayed in the tunnel a long time got that hitter out front rolled over late on that pitch so what I'm going to do is I'm going to speed him up not give him something off speed that he can handle B2 on the ground and that's just [Applause] foul field two and that one missing low one ball two strikes [Applause] count swing and a drive deep right field that's back and out of here that was blasted to the moon it's their second home run of the inning and they tack on to their lead it's 10 nothing a slider right down the middle of the plate it's like slow motion for a hitter so out of the pen for the Diamond Backs number 30 and with the big deficit on the scoreboard he almost has to just put that out of his mind every outing matters for relievers in their numbers but I think it's tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game two down dolman on strike two well he's been aggressive right out of the box and a smart pitcher is going to play off of that especially when you get to two strikes ground ball left side gathers and throws to First that ends the frame but two round Trippers in this inning the long ball was working it's now 10 zip back here in the desert and now the DH Ryan Mount Castle designated Ryan mastle sail back to work late on that fast ball usually when a pitcher had a dominant outing he has filled up the strike zone and he's gotten ahead in the count with first first pitch strikes well that's exactly what this guy has done in this one over 70% first pitch [Applause] strikes and sail deals and a base hit up the middle so a runner aboard to start the inning he was all over that one just kept it simple played Peppa with the middle of the in field and took it back where it came from and there's just no one there to knock it down ground ball left side could be two it's 11 nothing wasn't pulled on the first pitch at all he squared it up right away stepping in for San Diego Jackson [Applause] right side Carol under it makes the catch for the out it's a good recovery though after giving up the Home Run not allowing it to stay in the head but going to work at the next hitter and a tough one at [Applause] that Springer stands in here tried to hold back his swing there but went around part of the order coming through now and with one home run already in this inning they're definitely looking to do some more damage [Applause] [Applause] that one out to right Carol moves towards it no trouble here puts it away for the out two down Shawn Meyer the next up for the Padre's and it may be a long shot but a triple here will give him the cycle swing and a pop off in foul gra drifts towards it it makes the grab and that's the [Applause] inning bottom of the nine now here is Gabrielle Moreno first offering and it just misses unless things start to change the pressure tomorrow is really going to be on this home side you can afford to lose game one but you can't go down 02 at home so they'll need to forget about this one [Applause] quickly swing and a ball hammered left field that one back there G he flexes his power with that swing and they've got their first run it's 111 [Music] now here's Xander Bogarts now this Chapman comes in to take over and he's got a nice lead to work with so he should come in throwing strikes attacking these hitters fast ball for a strike Chapman a former Allstar he features a four seam fast ball a slider a two seamer and occasionally Works in a splitter breaking ball through there for a strike with the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered he's really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters that one the other way RAR steps on the bag one out bottom of the nineth next to hit for Arizona Heraldo Pomo over for three a fly out of ground out and a strike out that one a triple digits one power relievers one after another coming out of the bullpen these days got to be ready for that first pitch heater Lop behind second makes the grab and there's two out the right fielder number seven so they're down to their final out Corbin Carroll stands in now for the Diamondbacks that catches the top part of the zone and that is strike one they're down to their final strike oh and two the Dbacks down to their final strike s hang in a miss and he got him ball game so the San Diego Padres take game one of this wild card series a huge win for them in hostile territory yeah boo they've still got their work cut out for him in this series having to play on the road but like you said it's a huge win to Jump Ahead 10 in a short three- game series just have to win one of the next two games to move on to the next round and on the home side of this one obviously a disappointing result both for the team and the fans but with home field advantage throughout this series still has a lot up of the air so singy as the numbers show a great performance on the mound in this one absolutely and that really set the tone from the beginning a fantastic effort an 111
