[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] a new season means new podcast music here on Roll pod in Alabama sports podcast for Bama 247 hey what's up hello everybody I'm Cody Goodwin it's August 2nd as we record this show we are 29 days away from week one and we are two days into fall camp we got to talk to Alabama coach kayin dor on Wednesday we got to talk to Kane wck defensive coordinator and some of his assistant on Thursday we got to watch parts of practice both days out in the sweltering summer heat we saw Kan wck wear a full sweatsuit during both of those days drenched like he was cutting weight for a wrestling tournament today we're going to talk about what we saw heard observed All That Jazz through the first couple of days of fall Camp I'm joined Again by Alex Scarboro and Mike rodat guys we're two days into fall Camp are we staying hydrated out there no we're also not wearing sweatshirts out there not yet at least my own bottle of water it's not like uh you know I covered the NFL it's like endless supply of water at training camp you can just go in a cooler and pick out one I don't think that's the case here so I need to bring my own bottle and fill it up every day because I my uh my my chart color is a little bit off when I out there after practice and I need to get that back to you know the clear shall we say I think it was the first day when I realized like how hot it was and we were being escorted back into the indoor facility where they had like ice buckets and I was like man I just kind of want to like dip my hand in real quick and just like run it through my hair just to cool down just a little bit but I was like that' probably be poor look right now that we actually have access to practice again like let's not do anything to screw it up we are going to we're going to discuss what we've seen through the first couple of days of fall Camp that's more or less what Today Show is we're just going to kind of go around the horn and uh the assignment was for each of us to pick just a couple things that have maybe stood out things that we saw interesting things that we heard through the first handful of uh media availabilities with some of the coaching staff just what have we seen what have we learned have we learned anything at all what are are things becoming more clear we're only two days in so it's not like we know exactly what's gonna what everything is going to look like week one but maybe we've got a better idea of what certain positions maybe look like what certain you know that might honestly be it since we only get to watch certain parts of practice and we really don't get to watch any of like the you know seven on seven 11 on 11 things like that so in terms of scheme stuff we may have to wait actually until week one to really see what the whole operation looks like but two days into fall Camp Mike I'll start with you first what what what's been the big takeaway what have you learned so far what did you find interesting and yeah we truly might have to wait until week one because the scrimmages it seems like are going to be a little bit more locked down this year which is a little bit counter to what the general Vibe has been you know a little bit more openness uh with practice but uh it doesn't sound like the Red Elephant Club scrimmage is happening this year and if they can kind of keep that um under wraps you know because typically these scrimmages there's enough people there that things get out um then I think they'll be happy with that so uh we truly may not see but at the same time like there's no quarterback competition per se like there was last year so that would have dominated um our observations you know if if we were out there last year the position battles I feel like even the ones that we thought coming in like corner I think right now like Damani Jackson and Zan Brown like I don't think just listening to coaches the last couple of days like there's a ton of doubt about that right now um you know I think the offensive tackle position is is if you're asking my first observation that's kind of where I would start because um it truly was a little bit surprising to see Kaden Proctor with the second team it is something that was noted over the summer you know by Chris capil the offensive line coach that he was running with the second team I guess and you know the player run practices after he got back from Iowa but um to see him out there the offensive line is one of the few groups that when were out there actually you can pick up like a hierarchy of here's the first team here's the second team some of the other position groups are all just kind of mixed and matched um but that it's pretty obvious like you have pritchet Booker braford Roberts forby both days are out there that's what it was um and now kayn dor said during team drills they get Proctor in there with the first team a little bit but um it does open the door for the possibility of does Kaden Proctor start day one I think he does but there is some level of Doubt based on what we're seeing the first couple days and um I think they're high on Elijah Pritchard I think they like you know the possibility of him playing Left I think of those two guys him and forb I think pritchard's more capable of playing Left um you know would they try Proctor at right tackle I think that's an unanswered question at this point um he's a bigger dude he's smaller than he was last year but think like big powerful right tackle he does fit that mold um like a JC leam last year um so there's possibilities there um that I think are still playing out and will play out over the next four weeks but still somewhat surprising you know to see Proctor where he is with the second team I don't think it's necessarily a punishment I think it's just you had your tackles from the spring and pet and Formby and they didn't necessarily do anything wrong to lose their job so um you know the new guy I guess kind of gets slotted in behind them because he's in some ways a new guy so it it is what it is and um if you're asking me like top position battle remaining in Camp and I say remaining if you just started camp but I would almost put that above Corner because I think zavan Brown just continues to seem like the guy that seems most likely to start among those three freshmen um that we've been talking about at corner and I think the the interesting part about the the offensive line is one when we all first walked out there um you know you talk about like positional hierarchy none of the position seemed to have that going on at least through the drills that we were able to see but as we walked out there like offens sine is usually one of the first groups out there on the left and it's just like all right who's who's lined up next to Booker right like that's you know that might tell us a little bit of something at the same time I don't know that I'm super surprised that Proctor was running with the twos one kilic said so but two also I know that there's been a lot of like warm and fuzzy feelings about Proctor returning and and the position group and really the roster as a whole kind of embracing the fact that he came back and Formby obviously did a lot of work behind the scenes to make sure that he would come back and how it would help Alabama's offensive line room as a whole but also like you know one the whole spring practice thing like formb and pritet obviously got those crucial reps and they deserve to be rewarded for that and too on top of that like if you just bring this guy back in and Slot him right into the starting role or what we presume to be the starting role or at least the guy getting the reps with the ones right away maybe doesn't send the best message to everybody else and this is not exactly the time that you want to see position groups especially one is crucial of as offensive line fracture for whatever reason right like he may well earn that number one spot but like that's the thing he probably has to earn it and I think maybe that's again we're not watching the whole practices we're only getting about 15 minutes what we see in those 15 minutes might be part of that process and also don't forget that Proctor and pitet were competing last year at this time and really through the first half of the season I mean they were both were getting playing time I think at one point they were just kind of rotating Series so um was the separation ever that big that like Proctor had to be the starter you know day one of his second season like probably not yeah i' I'd argue that the separation was probably there because they stuck with Proctor despite struggles which told me that behind the scenes he was the better option in their eyes pretty clearly otherwise I think you would have seen more rotation during the season but I I think it's kind of I pumped the brakes a little bit on looking at where people are newcomers on in terms of when we try to look at a depth chart because every spring transfer portal window guy was not near the top of the depth chart King Mack cam Howard were way down if you're looking at the safeties past Bray hubard uh the other day when I was watching it so I think it's kind of a pecking order thing and you came in here at this time and a practical thing of hey watch what the first team does and do that because you weren't here to know what we were doing all spring long um that's not to say that there aren't there may be things going on with pritet in terms of cross training and being you know having an option at left tackle or right tackle I still think Kaden Proctor is the guy at left it's where he projects he's got the body type he's got all the things you look for and everybody knows the upside he has um but yeah I just think I think there's a very practical reason more than anything why he's where he's at right now and I think if he's there after you know a scrimmage or two um then I think it's time that we we kind of truly say wait is there something going on here yeah steal a line from Mike um that you wrote in the couple of days of observations that we posted on Bama 247 as well as um in the projected Jeet after the first two days that we dropped this morning on the website three guys for two spots how that ultimately sorts itself out is going to be one of the more intriguing things to follow over the next month or so Al
