finish how they wanted still made their first Bowl appearance since 2008 though they're excited about football here in Lawrence yeah definitely excited but like I said like you mentioned that defense didn't show up towards the end of like five or six games that got them to the bow they were in but they want to improve that defense get you know get the stops they need right now starting in this game and then get ready for the rest of the regular season yeah big reason for that success though Big 12 preseason offensive player of the year Jaylen Daniels his status still up in the air right now he's been dealing with back tightness throughout Camp we'll see if we see him regardless of who's the quarterback they have great weapons around them look at these three returning wide receivers yeah we talking about 6ot to 65 so you talking about tall fast and know how to High Point High Point the ball so I'm not wor really worried about them I know Jason bean is not either oh you talked about the defense they have to get better their defensive coordinator Brian Borland will not shy away from that Jeremy Robinson back they've added new guys on the defensive line they have to be better yeah they definitely have to be better Somebody I Used to text a lot was my good friend and teammate Gilbert Brown who once was a Jayhawks all always was giv him a little time towards the latter part of the season but hopefully for him and his defense right now tonight they'll be out here and show a good job for the first dat game of the season Lance Li said they are have been able to accelerate this process because of some great athletes who understand that this coaching staff cares about what they do they've held them accountable every step of the way on off the field and that's why they were able to win the amount of games they did last season Kansas trying to build on that this year picked eighth in the Big 12 Conference preseason poll yeah talking to last Coast Le this week was just a reminder of you know being at the places he had stopped Nebraska being at White Waller knowing the transition and learning from coaches like that coach me coach albor and Coach Frank Sol to know how to bring in talent and know how to develop that Talent into a winning culture no chance for Devonte key on the return and so Missouri state will send out a new quarterback for the first time in two seasons it will be Jacob Clark we expect to see two quarterbacks tonight for the Bears for Clark though his second College stop started at Minnesota this is his first Collegian start he's only appeared in two games in his career yeah so it's something when you got a new quarterback you just got to make sure they know how to drop back and don't get I say afraid of where to throw the ball and knowwhere to go with the ball when they see the coverage match up Clark ready to go in the shotgun 6'5 226 and a flag on the first play not the start they wanted but this Kansas crowd causing issues off number 58 5yd penalty still first down so you got a young you got a firsttime starter you know you got to find where the play clock is at and just the like you mentioned the loudness of the crowd right now the sun just set in the student section still kind of warm over there but they're getting loud for this team that is on the road from Missouri State right now Clark out of rock wall Texas this is his second year at Missouri State but appeared in just one game last year backing up Jason shell who was tremendous in two seasons Clark throwing that ball bobbled and then finally pulled in for a short gain tackle made by Marvin Grant all right got to catch that ball the first time wide receiver so uh good Paces in the par there's the young man Ryan beard 34 years old the youngest head coach in program history yes yes I mean a lot of I say a lot of heart you know in talking to him this week in terms of what they've done in training camp making sure they got these kids on the right page coming into a big Stadium like this to play against these J Hawks replacing the legendary Bobby patrino who spent three years at Missouri State and took this program to Heights they hadn't seen in multiple decades stuffed up at the line of scrimmage right there nothing doing on the run which Kansas defensively love to see that yeah yeah Hardy right trying to get some some yardage but usually first part of the game is tough up in the middle trying to run the ball I remember that them days as a running back that first series was always the toughest cuz everybody's amped up everybody's excited to play ball right now as Rich Miller the middle linebacker making the stop the second leading tackler last year on a former Kansas State Wildcat jardier Wright who will be a focal point for their offense all season long third and long for Clark looking wrapped up and brought down down a swarm of Jayhawks all house Blitz right there on Clark unfortun running back got the good Blitz pick up but didn't finish the job it was one too many guys for the running back and the lineman to protect Clark from getting his first sack of the Season Jeremy Robinson the first one to get there had three sacks last year so no surprise at the start for this uh Kansas defense they had a lot of proof like we mentioned in an opener and right now they're off to a good start making sure that Minnesota State's offense did not move the ball from the time of the kickoff burette gets a friendly roll on the punt and for the first time we will see this Kansas offense and it will not be Jaylen Daniels it will be Jason Bean leading the charge a red shirt senior from Mansfield Texas transferred from North Texas a few years ago but he's no stranger to starting started nine games in 2021 filled in last year starting four when Daniels got hurt in a lot of ways they're similar yeah definitely similar um I say Bean is more seems like he more comfortable passing the ball right last year they had between them both 32 passing touchdowns uh 18 for JD and 14 for bean bean sends his tight end Jared Casey in motion first play going to be a pass out wide Luke Grim on the catch trying to get to the sideline and drag down after a pick up of about seven Jamal mcmurran on the tackle I like that play selection by leopole just getting his quarterback warmed up even though he is a veteran at the position and I say being on the squad for a few years now but you always want to start a little bit slow to then open up the big plays later in the [Applause] game see Jaylen Daniels was on the field warming up pregame but we were unsure if we would see him right now he just has the headset on again out wide looking for Grim a nice t tack in open space very nice tackle we had a nice little Bunch formation right there set up for the wide receiver screen but Minnesota's defense I say stifles them don't let them they did not let them gain a yard on that maybe a yard maybe two but good job by the defense and I say good execution by Kansas offense right now two plays out of the drop um out of the bump two catches crisp catches but little short plays just to kind of get the offense rolling first and 10 on the short gain Devon Neil in the backfield Superstar running back local kid out at Lawrence Kansas these fans love him Bean throwing again a strike to Lawrence Arnold and another first down across Midfield to the 48 and good job like I mentioned good to by liop po and and coton Nikki calling play calling right now three passes in a row all completions everybody's on the same page and everybody is in I say starting to get in a rhythm them offensively right now for the J Hawks there's Jaylen Daniels on the sideline wearing the headset there we'll see we get a look at him today or not they've got a big game coming up next week against Illinois so potentially saving him Neil with a nice Cut here goes Deon Neil for the first time stays on his feet and he is gone to open the 2023 season for Kansas so de nil is a guy as we say in our locker room he's a problem if you don't get him down he's going to run hard he may outrun you like he did on that touchdown run right there 48 yds good cut nice power formation he was able to read and then make people miss a stiff form right there at the end and just really walked it into the end zone with his teammate Lawrence so that's just shows you the preparation the the I said the players mindset ready and then the coaches making sure these players are ready to go and right now all those plays Chris plays no not a drop pass and then perfect blocking and the running back did the rest to get the down and so good job for Leopold and his JW's first drive they led the they were seventh in the nation with 41 plays of 30 plus yards last year Lance liol has to love this 48 yards from Devin Neil and Kansas is on the board four plays 70 yards a minute 49 off the clock and a 48 yd shot for Devin Neil to open his account for the season with his first touchdown on a huge play for Kansas yeah but the defense sets that offense up coming out playing stiff not giving Missouri State no yardage and this I say it's it's early in this game but this is a nice warm up to get him ready for next week fighting the L line bimma and his uh poton offense in the Big 10 tab Allen sends it away and it'll be another Touchback for him well you talk about that Kansas defense needing to be better they don't have to worry about these two this year Jason Shelly who was the 2021 offensive player of the year in the Missouri Valley Football Conference you see his numbers dual threat guy and then Ty Scott who was in Camp with the Chiefs recently those are two huge guys to lose yeah watching them guys on film last year you saw Jason ASI a shell who was a guy that he either throw the ball over the top and hit you with the pass game or he could hurt you with his legs as well so having him gone and having a receiver gone as well is a right now something that they're missing new head coach Bobby patrino gone but his son Nick remains as the offensive coordinator so you feel that you will see a lot of similar things Ryan beard was here for three years as a defensive coordinator great ball there to Devonte key in a pickup of eight yards on the play for Clark Yeah you mentioned Nick patrino being an offensive coordinat so just knowing you know he has the he has some weapons out there he has some wide receivers he and he does have some running backs back there in the Run game too so he wants to try of get in Rhythm that first series was tough so hopefully this series first completion there could get him in the Rhythm Clark gets the first two series the other quarterback we expect to see is Jordan Paso a junior out of Highland California as a man in motion hand off and swarmed in the back field Kobe Bryant from his Corner Spot was the first one to get there and we not not we not talking about Kobe from three right [Applause] now defensive back came up par off the cage and and is physical you don't see a lot of DBS do that these days in in football but when you have physical Corners you got a physical defense that's what happens I'm liking what I see so far from jhawk defense 6' 175 on the outside he was one of the most electric defensive players have that pick six to seal the win at West Virginia the first in Kansas program history last season third and seven for Clark drops it and now Under Pressure Clark taking off and wrapped up by Rich Miller yeah that's fumble snap doesn't help him but uh did the best he could do get some getting get getting the defense could give him on that play picking up a few yards before now they got a punt couldn't get a hold of it right there like Austin Booker the transfer from Minnesota putting some pressure a will tough for uh coach beard and his team right now but they knew what they're walking into and they've been preparing all preseason for this so they're ready to go Fair cut by Trevor Wilson the nation by storm their best start since 2009 things got a little bit Rocky after that but game day came to town Rob wle on set for the first time in program history they welcomed TCU that day almost knocked off The Horn frogs would have completely derailed their season but they finished the year 1 and seven the Liberty Bowl lost to Arkansas in three overtimes an absolute Thriller to cap off that season for Lance lipold he said he feels a responsibility now he said he could feel a fan base Starving in Year One when they beat Texas and he wants to keep building this program nice screen play here on the first play of the drive out to the big man Trevor Cardell at his tight end spot Yeah you mentioned how he wants to build this program so he's doing it from the inside out you know from the weight room to the mindset of how he coaches up the players along with an assistant and assistants and him been long been together a long time for years 10 plus years so when you have that camaraderie among the coaches it it filters down to the players to where winning mentality becomes a lot easier to build out second and three being hands off this time to Daniel haaw Junior who is back after an injury stole the back part of last year from him gets a yard on the play you mentioned the coaching relationships he's had Andy codal Nikki has been with him since 2013 on the other side Brian Borland has been with him even longer than that since 2007 both of them getting with him at Wisconsin in Whitewater going to Buffalo with him and then here to Kansas there's others on Lance lipold staff who been long tenur members of his staff people he's familiar with another hand off to heaw fumbles it Missouri state has it a big hit the ball popped out and the Bears have forced a turnover Todrick McGee big play there for missoui Z they needed that haaw tried to go into contact a little too aggressive with the ball placement and he looked like he almost hit the guy with the ball you know he almost threw it at him but that's something sometimes when you're a physical Runner that happens that happened to me from time to time as a runner where you're trying to hit through the tackler to gain more yardage and sometimes that ball comes out Jared Lloyd forced the fumble todri McGee picked it up and now Missouri State in business in jhawk territory looked like really more he was just getting it into his uh the Bread Basket there getting in his grip as the contact happen so it was more one of those things and that happens sometimes when you have a you know first part of the game everybody's excited and the speed is fast Clark still in at quarterback and the pistol set flag thrown is a can't hear thing or oh false start yeah remember those days and and you it's not quite a dome but going back to the Minnesota days or Detroit Lion days that crowd gets cranked up and this is kind of how this j-hawk crowd is right now they're loud and so for the offensive lineman they either got to get a little system down either tap each other on the on the hit the wrist or anything to make sure they're not jumping off sides let a look at the student section right now they have showed up in huge numbers they were sitting in the sun for a long time pressure for Clark takes off it's almost all of those yards back back but a four yd gain to set up second and 11 yeah even though Clark's a veteran right now um right he's just taking his time he's not seeing the routes he's not he's not reading the coverage as fast why that's why you see him drop back and then he scoots out of there real quick cuz by the time he gets to his drop the receivers probably were open aren't open no anymore and so now he's you know trying to pick up yardage as best he can second and 11 right in the back field with Clark hand off to right cuts it back he is wrapped up in the back field look at the blue jerseys and Tommy Dunn Jr grabbed him first that jhawk defense look like a from the booth here they look like a lot of blue piranhas coming to the Run game right now that is vicious defense early in the game and I like what I [Applause] see and to make sure they bottle up jardi R is right because he's the first running back since 2014 to have 700 yards in the Missouri State backfield so don't let him keep glowing right now 71 and nine touchdowns for him last year the Missouri Valley Conference football football conference all newcomer team member third and long yet again Clark rolling out looking down field it's a couple yards but pushed out of bounds yeah I had a few people open but that was a good decision get what he could take from the defense defense is being tight it was looks like it was man but maybe a Zone didn't quite get a good look at what the coverage was but something where Clark you know made the right decision get as much as he can get the ball out of bounds and not a turnover Dylan Brooks that's one to keep an eye on if you're a jhawk fan an Auburn transfer former number 18 on the ESPN 300 fourth and eight for Missouri State railan sharp in motion on the near side the pick up close Mark throwing down field and caught think that's a catch for a first down Devonte key yeah so you have the turnover and so going forth for fourth and eight that's definitely something I would do as a coach because look defense is playing aggressive we're on their side of the field let's go for it if we punt it we could put them either deeper so good good selection by coach beer to go for it and [Applause] convert look if he tight to the to the ground just see if he just got his hands under it or his fingers under the ball make sure it didn't hit that Turf look like from the last angle we saw it was a catch but we'll take a look at [Applause] this big call right here though from Missouri State who if this is converted will be at the Kansas 29 [Applause] at that moment he has it off the ground in his Bread Basket but on the initial throw here we go we can see the hands get underneath [Music] potentially there you go y That's a completion yeah he got it in their hands good job B receiver there to get his hands under the ball and the turf cuz he has white gloves referees can see that as we can see here on the replay so gets it cradles it up and then rolls with the ball so good job with the wide receiver getting the ball off the ground and showing his body to see to let the referees know this is a completion if it's not I'm surprised Junior from Raytown Missouri his fourth season in Springfield primarily used as a kickoff return man last year he had five career receptions entering this game y the ruling stand first and 10 fans don't like it but it's a catch good catch by the young man there from Missouri State first first down for the Bears right here maybe some confidence for Jacob Clark and Company good catch there by Devonte ke they talked to us about getting the Run game established to get these quarterbacks comfortable but they have not been able to do that so far does J defense made sure of that sharp in motion here's another hand off and right again by three or four Jayhawks they must they must have been watching film that we've watched since last season to make sure he doesn't get warmed up so right now the defense is being Stout to ja cardier trying to get him in the Run game going and right now it's not happening for Missouri State Patrick Joiner Jr with the fourth tackle for loss for the J Hawks it's a grad transfer from Utah State spent three years at Miami a former fourstar recruit another one of those new faces on the defensive line Second and 11 Here Comes The Blitz off the corner picked up by Wright Clark has space to step up nice job there by the linebacker Taiwan Barry Hill J in open space try to give him the pump fake right there and see if he will go for it bar hill did not so was able still picked up a couple yards but the pump fake quarterback's uh I say good old good old tool there but didn't didn't quite work on Barry Hill Little P coming up right here to try to get bar hill to take it he didn't bar hill still closed in on him so Clark only picks up a few yards there land slide Taiwan bar hill ready to take the next step they love his size and speed at that linebacker position third and 11 Clark throwing low throw incomplete and a late flag comes in on the ground might have been at the knees fre throw rule that's come into effect in the last couple years you can't roll into a quarterback a throwing quarterback's legs and I think that's what happened [Music] here let's here the call personal foul ring the passer low hit on the quarterback number nine the defense passes into the goal automatic first down it's the Minnesota transfer Austin Booker y so here on the P penetration by Kansas defense they're there but you got to let up as he's throwing the ball he is a defensive player right there and that's something that's been going on for the last few years in the NFL and college ranks that moves the chains down to the 15 yd line of The Jayhawks with under four to play here in the first quarter that was Deon pH phips getting in there on that contact got to let [Applause] up right in the backfield for Clark got an audible going on hand off to right trying to bounce it outside secondary can tackle though nice play by Quinton Lasser good job there by the defense stringing right out right there not giving him the time to get his footing I mean soon as he gets the ball it's almost like they have a spy on him soon as he gets the ball there is a jhawk v lining to him making sure he does not pass the line of scrimmage and he has not yet maybe one play maybe two I missed but has not been a lot past the line of scrimmage a whole lot in this first quarter negative three rushing yards for the Bears so far second and 12 been faced with a lot of long second and third Downs pick up farar has time as an open receiver across the middle and fball at the 2 yd line Kansas says they have it no the receiver tried to spin try to make the cut up the field but it looked like he ran into his own teammate that Jarred the ball loose I've been down this road before where you're trying to make a move trying to extend the ball maybe but then run run into your own teammate and cause the the ball to come out looked like Hunter wood might have came up with it in the pile it was him that fumbled it so very lucky by Uh Wood there to cover recover his own fumble on the about the two yd line so that's good news for the Bears right here being down 7even nothing on the goal line first and goal at the two sharp in motion throwing he was covered well just a little while of RA sharp I like the play moving on that you had the short motion coming in fast but then breaking it out almost like a a China route as it was called when I played below the line of scrimmage and then breaking back out of the line of scrimmage to have that almost leverage advantage over the defensive back there Taiwan Barry Hill kind of limped off for Kansas just now and he's going with the trainers on the sideline we'll keep an eye on that second and goal stay looking good making some plays that fourth and eight has put some momentum in their in their in their advantage 10th play of the drive pressure on Clark throwing off his back foot caught and touchdown Jamaria Robinson the red shirt freshman from Coco Florida hey coach beard talked about the enthusiasm talked about the way training camp is done has went for this Bears team and it's showing right now they've had a tough first part of this first quarter we're not even to the second quarter yet but the first quarter was rough but we had a mistake we had a fumble by J Hawks and then a short drive here conversion on Fourth and eight and now they're re rewarding themselves by getting a touchdown here and a hard earn touchdown here earn for these Bears Missouri State the last two years they're 0 and2 against FBS opponents but they took Arkansas down to the wire they LED 2417 go into the fourth quarter would go on to lose that game two years ago lost 2316 at Oklahoma State they have had some close games with FBS opponents finding their way on the scoreboard Jacob Clark connecting with his man Jamaria Robinson and we're tied for griter Farms all tied up between Missouri State and Kansas 224 to play in the first quarter have to love the response if you're a Bears fan 100% man first quarter starts off defense from J Hawks are that back field they barely mov the ball in the first drive three and out then they punt it and a few punts later or the first score for the j-hawks but then JW get to get it back create a turnover from Deon Neil and take that turnover right down to Phil in score Trevor Trevor Wilson on the return has space and knocked down finally by the kicker near the 35 yd line tomorrow another exciting lineup of games on the Big 12 now on ESPN plus first up 2 p.m Eastern Northern Iowa taking on I IA State then 3:30 Eastern Eastern Kentucky taking on Cincinnati 6:00 a triple header sou Eastern Missouri State vers Kansas State Central Arkansas against Oklahoma State and Texas State verse Baylor all on Big 12 now on ESPN plus tomorrow yes indeed all those teams got to be ready to play because of a small school don't mean they might not wake you up ready for a football back we've had some great games this week already it's only Friday yes indeed there Bean on the run right here a nice pick up by Jason Bean near Midfield showing the athleticism maybe it lay flag here it is hey you know when the running back gets running that's where the you know the linebackers the DBS they start their miles start watering like oh man we really get a shot on this guy as a runner right now and so sometimes they get a little too exciting and then a few yards out of bounds [Applause] waiting for the call here F defense 15 yd penalty automatic first same result 15 yd penalty and they get grabby to at the same time if you joined us late that was Jason Bean on the carry we have not seen Jaylen Daniels as the Big 12 preseason offensive player of the year he's dealt with back tightness throughout camp and that has kept him out of this game so far he is dressed he is holding his helmet on the sideline with a headset on but has not been on the field so far Bean has all kinds of time right now looking downfield dangerous throw is incomplete try to get that to his tight end there but yeah triple coverage thought he could sneak it in there not too many white jerseys there for that pass Avery pal coming over late one of the corners for Missouri State to bat that away that's the first incompletion for bean who started four for four for 29 yds I think that ball was intended for Fairchild couldn't tell the number there second and 10 at the 36 yd line of the Bears Bean on the option flips it out wide to Neil cuts it back up field to the 30 where he spun down pick up of about six yards on the play a good leverage and good option position by Neil there that was a position that I was a very got very used to as a freshman with Tommy and so knowing that distance between the quarterback and even having been where he had to actually fake out a Defender before he pitched it and he kept that distance between the quarterback uh on point so it was a good job by Neil to catch that ball and get a few yards out of that jhawk fans hoping it works out as well as it did for you guys oh Nebraska back in the day that's definitely what they want here in Lawrence third and four for bean Neil in the back field handoff on third down cuts it up wrapped up but driving the legs close to the marker about a yard short Taj Chambers on the tackle got into going got into the contact and start driving his legs a little bit hopefully this is a couple yards short maybe a yard short here for the young running [Music] back the offense stays on the field [Applause] empty back field for bean extra linan on the extra tight end on formation there Casey in motion and whistle after they put Casey under Center time out time out Missouri State and it probably saved him a first down here a chance to regroup definitely look like some out of Kansas City's Playbook there he got the tight end in motion then the tight end comes in under Center something that Kelsey could do right down the street here Jared Casey wouldn't be surprised you see Mahomes and Andy Reid doing this in a couple weeks and winning Chiefs kickoff Andy Reid recently said that he took a play from a janitor one time so I'm certain he's watching Kansas play he would be happy to take one from The Jayhawks as well 100% and Casey man he's uh definitely built different he's 6' 255 if I'm correct that's right a little bowling ball man that's a a fullback back in my day but I guess he's a tight end now ormer walkon who scored the game-winning two-point conversion against Texas in Austin back in 2021 can you call that one twice in a row uh I say you'd be very brave to do that they're doing something else here close to it quick run to the line Neil up the middle swallowed up right there I don't think he got it backwards look at the white jersey de Neil is short we got Wallace pointing that they didn't get and I'm pretty sure they didn't get it offensive Squad defensive squad for uh Jayhawks is coming on the field and offense is coming off for Missouri State there good so they try to bring another trickeration play formation built different but didn't work for that Bears defense they snuffed it out and was able to push go back and not get the conversion Jared Lloyd the middle linebacker came in low and then Arman Wallace and Company cleaned it up so first and 10 now for Jacob Clark hey we got 23 seconds left in this first quarter we got a game we do have a game so far first and 10 hand off to right not much but positive yardage which they haven't seen much of on the ground so far still in the negatives right now after that twoy run and this is something that coach beer will definitely har on he's not going to stop running the ball he knows what he has in jardier and keep running the ball yeah it's not a lot right now but I remember those days when you get not much in the first quarter not much in the first half at all but then you keep chipping away and then for second half you got the big runs and the big uh I say big yardage plays that will help your offense get the ball down the field into the first quarter all tied up Missouri State giving Kansas all they want right now ESPN Plus at the University of Kansas beautiful campus here in Lawrence Kansas 77 after one quarter between the j-hawks and the Missouri State Bears big crowd here in Lawrence hoping The Jayhawks start to impose their will second and eight to start the second quarter for Jacob Clark right in the back field fakes the handoff looking downfield Clark stepping up has room to run the first down and more tripped up at the 46 yd line good job good job by Clark getting the ball saw the defenses took everything away from him and smart quarterback you know what you're going to take my receivers away I'm going just use my legs get downfield and pick up what I can Melo doson making the stop but a big pickup there 46 yds or the 46 yd line after the 17 yd run by Clark yeah Clark doesn't have the side to side speed but he has straight ah head speed so you got to note that for the rest of this game here Pau the backup quarterback tonight is more of the athlete big run here for right he finally gets loose across the 30 uhoh down to the 28 yd line jardier right all right yeah jardier finally gets the block and tackles are upfield at the second level he's able to use his speed to get into the secondary almost if arms the DB off to get into the end zone but gets chipped up right around the 30 yard line Kenny Logan making the tackle trying to punch that out from behind Missouri State fans looking on loving what they're seeing right now first and 10 at the 28 designed quarterback run or a broken play or a broken play you might be right jardier kind of just did his fake and was still tired from the last run did not do a whole lot so it might have been a broken play there for him and Clark or a misread by jardier he felt that before oh yeah where you have that big run and you're like uh I can't come out but I need to catch my breath somehow second and eight trying to keep this drive rolling right now inside the Kansas 30 Clark throwing over the middle that ball is caught by Lance Mason who's cut down quickly by Rich Miller and we are getting down the this Missouri State offense just got down the field real fast you've been paying attention here big play run by Wright and Clark with his legs and a few passes here and there and now we're right right on the top of the red zone so jhawk defense might be a little bit tired right now and that's what's going on but right now Missouri State's offense is moving down the field and getting in rid them third and two at the 20 multiple backs in the back field a Man in Motion that's Jamaria Robinson they roll out looking for Robinson he couldn't haul it in he got a little bit but Clark not quite set his feet way he won it so the ball was behind his receiver if you would have hit him in stride you got that Speedy receiver hitting going to the edge and you saw you if you watch the NFL last year and even watch the Super Bowl you saw the edge routes that would get you know sky open the speed receivers open for Kansas City and that's what you saw right there with Missouri State's uh offense Owen rosance on the field whistles [Applause] first and they're looking for potential targeting on that last play is what it sounds like by Kobe Bryant this crowd does not like it so Kobe Bryant DB so must have been on the receiver trying to catch the [Applause] ball right at the end after that ball was not brought in the ball was behind him he turned his body to try to catch it and Kobe was right there so he probably being physical as he is as a DB probably to finish off the play oh no took an extra step before the contact so that might be it right there balls down one step boom so he had time to slow up and leading with the crown of the helmet exactly so that might get them that penalty and give him a first down in the Red Zone got to be smart right now this where you're a good player you got the enthusiasm going I mean you got the excitement going because you know we got to stop this offense but you got to be smart at the same time yes it was incomplete pass ball's dead that's where he should slow down let that player go but he decided to hit him I know his first game of the season you want to get a lot of physical in but right there that might cost your team a chance to keep the ball out of the end zone against Missouri State what he talks about you get tired of hitting each other in Fall Camp yeah ready to hit somebody else that was something always come midweek in Lincoln Tuesday and Wednesday was the hardest practice pH most physical practices so yeah we couldn't wait for Colorado K State to come through um but right now this play might cost uh a few yards to get him in a better position this is what DV sport the angle that they're looking at right [Music] now you think back to Missouri State's first touchdown drive it was dead in the water but the roughing the passer no foul for targeting no foul for targeting on the play as we talk pre pregame you know that targeting Zone has kind of been I say tone down now it's not the whole Halo of the helmet so it's a little bit more in the center of the head top of your head right there so a 66 Circle up there exactly so good I say good luck there for not getting the targeting call a 37y field goal for Owen rosance a transfer from Bowling Green who didn't play there last year he's replacing an All-American kicker and Jose Pano a chance to take the lead on Kansas here in the second quarter the hold is there kick is up and it is good and Missouri State thanks to Owen rosance has the lead here in Lawrence the 34-year-old Ryan beard in his debut as head coach loving it so far Batman in the building in that Missouri State crowd it looks like they lead Kansas here 1214 to play in the first half that's my nickname there's no other Batman but me so I was right then yeah Batman in the building oh yeah I'm the original though I'm OG up here Spencer gross sends it away and into the end zone for a Touchback Ryan beard and Company very high praised for Kansas and what they've done here in such a short time he called Lance lipold a winner but he also said this isn't a staff that's going to Flinch they've been there they've been in these games they've coached at places who have played in these games and Ryan beard told us his first start as a safety at Western Kentucky back in 2008 was against Alabama in Tuscaloosa he's been there he's seen it oh yeah that's uh not an easy place to go play being a small school really be any school at this moment the way Nick has his team playing but to go down there and then regardless win or lose how you come out of there with your head rised or raised you know you don't have your head down coming out of game win or lose that's a good deal time out Kansas something wasn't right land slide pull not happy on that sideline right now they're trying to get things going offensive coordinator in his first season as the defensive coordinator from Missouri state is fourth overall he's been the defensive line coach there but Ryan beard moved from DC to head coach so LD Scott who is his brother-in-law actually married to one of the patrino daughters Kelsey yeah it's it's a whole family on the coaching staff definitely met at one of the big uh I think coaching events was mentioned in our talk this week first and 10 they've done a nice job so far holding this Kansas offense in check but this time out to Luke Grim he was a big factor on that first drive when they went four yards seven or four plays 70 yards for the touchdown yes they did that was the first play they did too was wide receiver screen similar to the one they just thrown here so be going back getting in Rhythm and sometimes you have to do that when the first drive happens boom score but then right now a little stagnant with the Kansas offense so no let's run those plays that got us a few yards and maybe get the Run game going in we'll see so let's see what happened here 10 returning starters on this Kansas offense Jason being at quarterback tonight Jaylen Daniels on the sideline dressed but we have not seen him the back stiffness that he's dealt with in Camp being all kinds of time aired it out open man caught it's Lawrence Arnold stiff arm down to the 15 and there's the big play J Hawks again you got the the set up with the screen we got run with the nil that's potentially there but then you get the play action DBS get either Hungry Eyes misplaced lose to Lawrence you can't lose number two you shouldn't lose number two and you get banged right there on a big play being throwing End Zone caught Luke Grim his first touchdown of the season I like the tempo you see the tempo there quick fast caught the ball got down o linan being everybody's running down to get the ball set gets Missouri State's defense off kilter there and able to run the play execute it and get a touchdown there within two plays that's a strike too to Luke Grim in the end zone to the three-headed mle wide receivers that we talked about but good job by Lio changing the temple up along with uh his uh Cola Nikki there changing the temple weapon against Missouri State's defense Seth Keller on for the extra [Applause] point kick is up and good Kansas responds in lightning quick fashion three plays 75 yds a minute and 11 seconds off the clock Bean To Grim the strike in the end zone Kansas leads highest scoring season in program history last year and you saw what they can do right there Jason Bean leading them down the field and finding luk Grim on the three playay 75 yd Drive Grim right now in the medical tent receiving some attention so we'll keep an eye on him he's their leading receiver from a year ago tab Allen to boot it away Moses and key deep to return retrieved in the end zone and key is going to bring it out to the 15 yd line and he's up ended there near the 17 big hit on special teams let's go back and look at the big play Jason being connected with Lawrence Arnold so we got play action coming at us here once the pl gets going play action DB gets stuck looking at the middle of the field but didn't look didn't get the eyes behind him that he should have in his head and then Lawrence over top able to make the big catch and get the team the j-hawks into the Red Zone next play they scored a touchdown Lawrence Arnold 63 junr from doto Texas you see what Missouri State's done on these last couple drives they have been helped by penalties by the j-hawks at time mainly that roughing the passer call on Austin Booker on the first touchdown drive now whistles here in a timeout called by Missouri State patrino and Jacob Clark trying to iron things out right now we were told there expectation was to see two quarterbacks tonight Jacob Clark though the way he's played he's earned this right now hasn't he no he's definitely he definitely has he's been poised he's been already attacked you know first quarter the defense from Jayhawks was putting that heat on him and he survived it he's able to get now he's seeing it the game is slowing down to him he can see the coverage he can see the Defenders coming at and he's able to pick up basically pick and choose what he wants to do okay you know what I got to get the ball out or you know what let me use my LS get the ball up field pick up a couple yards slide get down or get out of bounds here is Jordan Pau who is potentially the other arm we could see in this game little bit more mobile out of Ventura College in California red shirted last year at Missouri State after he spent the One season in California P show probably has more college experience but Clark the Minnesota transfer was here last year to back up Jason Shelly first and 10 at the 18 hand off to right in trouble in the back field dancing and makes something out of nothing to get a couple yards oh yeah definitely something out of nothing a lot of penetration J Bounce jumps cuts to the right makes a Defender Miss and gets the ball back I say literally back to the last scrimmage or maybe pi up two yards on that first down there but a good running back trying to find Space sometimes got to take what the defense gives him and that's what he did there on that play JB Brown on the stop transfer out of Bowling Green where he spent three [Applause] years second down and eight Clark looking to throw quickly on the slant pattern caught by raand sharp near a first down and it looks like they'll move the chains so Minnesota State Bears office right now in Rhythm and in play calling offensive line is holding blocks everything is looking good right now for a team that as you look at the teams on paper compared you know Kansas has the stronger team but right now this team is in well good control of what they're doing and trying to stay on the rhythm of their scheme of offense right now up front for both of these teams a lot of new faces on the offensive line for Missouri State and the defensive line for Kansas and off to right on first down big hit coming up the middle Marvin Grant big baby maybe a Miss block there by the pulling guard coming through there but jardier maybe just needs to be a tad more patient to let the offensive line get to his run fit you see big 58 coming around and it was the guard just missed it was two guys he could have took he took one not the other and the other was the one that put the hit on jardier Sixth tackle for loss and again that's somebody coming out of this Kansas secondary right there Grant the redirt Jr from Detroit Michigan Second and 11 Blitz coming off the edge picked up by right Clark going to run it being converged on gets about 10 yds he's really close to the first down about a half yard short sacrificed the body there to get the first down I believe he might have got every day just a yard short but want to be smart get the ball down slide don't let that contact come to you I on Barry Hill on the stop it's good to see him out there right now we saw him come off little bit hobbled earlier in this game third and a half [Applause] Yard Man in Motion Clark hands off up the middle another big hit but spun down about three yds forward toward the 40 yd line Kansas defense was set up for the Run that's what they got but they had a little misdirection coming at him so to make try to get him off kilter try to follow that motion receiver out to the edge but that wasn't the case but you have the tackles pull for the Trap play to jardier I think it was able to pick up the first down good job thereby Missouri State's offense it has basically been only jardier right in that back field well hey he's uh was it all mvfc I think I would do the same thing it's their first conversion on third down handoff nowhere to go right there four blue jerseys in the way Gage Keys was one of them in on the stop so I can see K 's defense right now getting their second win still give him a little yardage but they're going back and forth with Missouri State's offensive line able to stop jardi on that play and hopefully he can keep doing it to make sure that ball doesn't advance in the Run game for Missouri State second and [Applause] 10 pressure coming the screen play set up what a grab right there near the jhawk at Midfield What A Catch by railen sharp that looked like that was completely blown up it did not look good until the ball got into the receiver's hand he was able to make one guy Miss and pick up some yardage there there's the one guy Miss and get what he can gets tackled just short of a first down good execution by Missouri State's offense on that wide receiver screen Chara Jun from Allen Texas one of the offensive captains along with jardier right on this team third and two for the Bears and this Kansas defense get themselves off the field time for Clark dropped and almost picked up there by Kobe Bryant but incomplete on Third and two Clark right there like he had alligator arms he saw the DB sitting there waiting for him it might have been a cover two or maybe a man switch cuz the DB that was cover him stopped and stayed on Missouri State side of the field so he end up bringing his route all the way over but did not finish the route and then again like I said alligator arms on that reception Grant burette into punted away two-time All-American punter from Missouri State this is much better than the first one boots it away fielded and fair caught at the 13 yd line by Trevor Wilson a ball game so far but kanes and the offense coming back [Applause] out Toyota's national sales event is on make the most of Summer with a new Toyota we want the great Tacoma great Tacoma coming in hot on it Highlander Hybrid your University of Kansas experience with jhawk checking from Central Bank Central Bank and KU elevating together people all over the world are desperate for energy in fact the International Energy agency predicts that by the year 2050 it will take 28% more energy than we currently have to be able to supply our needs energy demand is going to increase increased by 28% what we should be talking about is how in the world are we going to be able to produce 28% more energy by the year 2050 than we currently produce today we started at 12 wining 11d and dropping di is 96 what happened when the big a met the Southwest seven H count with six at the five on the floor and four School stronger we put up threes throw up Deuces and make one thing clear we've always been greater than 12 back in Lawrence Kansas beautiful night to kick off the season for The Jayhawks and bears 1410 Kansas leading Missouri State and the Jayhawk offense coming back out Jaylen Daniels on the sideline we have not seen him tonight they return 91% of their production from last season on the offensive side of the ball that is tops among FBS teams this is going to be a very dangerous team it is once he get back on that field hopefully next week you know and they got a big game against the line night from the Big 10 so to have him back that'll be big for Jay Hawk's offense their offensive coordinator Andy codel Nick he said he wants to be the most stressful offense to prepare for in the country one of the reasons Devin Neil on a big pickup there on first down to the 30 yd line he gains 16 so they they definitely can do that this week you know by having Jason being in there at quarterback get him some reps and then able to basically do other packages that were basically reserved for jayen Daniels hold them off for another week so aine now don't get to see that now they got to prepare for only Jason Bean knowing that jayen DS may be back on the field next week first and 10 at the 30 now for being in company Man in Motion hand off to Neil looking for space gobbled up quickly after about two three yards Jaylen Williams in on the stop for Missouri State yeah Nils doing a good job of pressing the hole you know protecting the ball at the same time and getting little bit of yardage as he can just chipping away three two yard Gaines right here and eventually come third fourth quarter those two yard those three yard Gaines will turn into five and then eight and then 10 yard games for this Run game for J Hawks Deon Neil Leeds just a stacked backfield Daniel haaw Jr back from injury this season Savon Morrison and Dylan McDuffy transfer from Buffalo Bean looking long down the sideline and it is dropped incomplete I'm not sure Quinton Skinner ever had a great beat on great hands on it good defense by Jamal mcmurren yeah big uh big number zero Quinton Skinner 65 using that body the ball's up the air he tries to High Point it right there does a good job the DB does even better job to fight him McKinnon right there fighting Skinner for possession and completion right there so good job by both players the receiver trying to High Point it and then the DB being beat on height still working through the play and not giving up Skinner rocking a new number this year zero instead of 83 jok fans are used to seeing him in there he is and get used to seeing number zero yeah remember see hearing that later early in the offseason that even at the pro level I believe there's going to be zero maybe double zero popping up I remember watching old film of Auto gram we're in dou zero for it I believe was that the Cleveland Browns or not sure if it was that team or not but just seeing double zero is definitely something different than seeing fun I say fun to see if anything Jason Bean loves seeing Quinton Skinner open downfield across the 50 First and 10 for The Jayhawks they're longest drive today is five plays and that wasn't even a touchdown Drive Lawrence Arnold trying to get the edge he is pushed out after a gain of one PJ Hall to Safety in on the stop yeah one thing and we mentioned this early in the game I mentioned it you mentioned it Chucky is that that Leo Lio said with the scheme in offense or I say more was it Cola Nikki has mentioned look we're going to have different looks that we're going to give a defense and that's what we're doing they're running that screen play they' run it several times so a team has to have this in their mind defensively to know that okay they going to run screen plays they're going to run a lot of cross action to make our Defenders use their awareness watch their eyes and make sure they keep their discipline in their Leverage second and nine the option Bean going to keep this one down the sideline Jason Bean finally out of bounds you're right that is a horse caller if I seen one didn't have that around when I was playing but you know what I like that I like the call now cuz it protects the players and I think he also he probably was a few steps out of bounds it still got yanked down by the defender Todrick McGee making the stop on the sideline you see the speed of Jason Bean on the outside right there foul tackle number four the defense 15 y on the end of the run first down and that helps this uh jhawk offense right here you got a nice run option going good reads by Bean there's no pitch action so he's going to take it himself gets down the field use the speed and just as he gets up field he's out of bounds a couple steps but regardless that is not a tackle that is not allowed at the NCAA [Applause] level direct snap to Neil not much doing near the 15 yd line yeah they're definitely looking into the chief's Playbook here you got three guys with the hands up you don't know who's getting a snap they're definitely talking to Reed and maybe Mahomes is stopping by every now and then give them a little a note here and there what they're doing in Chiefs practice [Music] Lance lold has very high praise for Andy codel necki his offensive coordinator he's been with since 2013 he said he will be a head coach sooner rather than later which is probably not news j-hawks fans want to hear but he has been exceptional in two seasons for Kansas now I can see that the conversation we had with col Nikki this week was he was enthusiastic he was very confident in the way this team is prepared during training and going into this game so what you see today is basically a product of him knowing his players knowing what type of plays they like to run what they've been getting ready for to execute and then just having that uh I say this that aggressiveness to pull off some of these plays to make sure because they know they got the players to do [Applause] it third and eight now for Kansas inside the 15 of Missouri State Big Man in Motion out wide Mason Fairchild Bean looking the other direction gets outside throwing on the run to Neil who tries to scoot through three Defenders but is dropped at the 11 yd line and that's going to bring up fourth down Jared Lloyd on the stop yeah good job Neil tried to help his quarterback out being in being available uh on Scramble Play good thing was and then after that he caught the ball and then tried to get a couple yards out of that it was three Defenders there then wasn't not giving him no extra yardage offense staying on the field right now for Kansas actually looks like Lance Li going to call a timeout so you got 14- 10 right now and I bet you a lot of people in the stand did not think this game would go this route right now Missouri state is playing solid football not a whole lot of mistakes created a mistake where J Hawks creating a turnover um before first quarter was over so you got a tight game here um coach beard you know living on what he said this week about having his team ready to play and just putting that bit little bit of doubt in them that like we mentioned earlier that doubt is there if you could do that for a team that doubt can't create mistakes create errors on the other side of the ball so hopefully something can happen later in this game and right now it's a great game so far longest drive for Kansas right now this would be the 10th play play coming up their first four drives combined 15 plays so we got Andy codal Nikki in the red there up in the booth so we got fourth and five so this is real easy should just kick for three there's no reason to try to go for it here unless they feel froggy um but I think coach lipo is going to just call for the special team to stay out there kick the field goal get three points bring this thing 17 to 10 Seth Keller on the field Chip Shot here from 28 yds Keller a transfer from Texas State 37 of 43 field goals in the last three years at Texas State timeout Missouri State and Ryan beard not happy he is not happy either something play calling wise I think he's talking to a coach you can tell he's talking to the mic right there so he's talking to somebody yeah he's not in our headset thank the Lord but he's up there talking to one of his coaches that made the wrong call because obviously you don't want to use a timeout when you don't have to uh in a game especially in a game like this second quarter it's a minute n left they could have used that when they got the ball back now they don't have no timeouts so that means when they get the ball back every pass and every run most likely you got to get to the get out of bounds stop the clock or hopefully it's an incomplete pass cuz that'll save time for you to get the ball down the field to try to at least get in field goal Rays once they get the ball back he is still hot on the sideline right now and the timeouts man that's like go don't want to lose it out of him now here in this first half so Seth Keller back ready to go from the left hash 28 yers up line drive kick is good and Kanas makes it a touchdown game with a minute five to play in the first half hey when you have a minute five left on the clock those timeouts are like you got an older brother or older siblings that eat your favorite snack and you hide that favorite snack up in the cupboard somewhere up in the cabinet and you find it and still there that's what those timeouts are like right there they don't find it you keep them well Missouri state has a little bit of a chance here 105 left ran beard hoping Nick patrino and Company can dial something up quickly and on the flip side don't want to take any big chances here and let Kansas get any more right now The Jayhawks will get the ball to start the second half yeah they want to try to get this ball downfield it's going to be hard without no timeouts but it can be done the way Clark has thrown the ball and use his legs and jardier if he could run off rip off a big run here they did it earlier in the first half already got down the field and maybe won two plays not a not a lot of time off the clock so if they could do that here with no timeouts get at least field goal range here get that three points back that'll be a win last kick Devonte key brought it out of the end zone did not get back to the 20 he's back deep with Jakari Moses Allen sends it away into the end zone for a Touchback coming up at the half I want to miss it KU blueprint that is a fantastic series that they put together here on this Kansas football program and everything that's going on inside and outside the program also first half highlights and stats from Lawrence yeah watch a few of those clips episode one and two and you you just see kind of behind the scenes you know the microphone the players that are miked up what they say and you just get to know them a little bit better and the coaching staff as well get you fired up for football that's for sure 100% first and 10 from the 25 Missouri State a minute and 5 Seconds to work with Jacob Clark at quarterback the whistle Lance lold was on the sideline helping out the officials as well yep play clock down to zero first down hasn't had a problem with this at all much in the first half so kind of a little bit this a little bit of surprise that happening now for Clark almost looked like Lio gave a little wink there hey I'm doing my part over here oh yeah coaches got to get animated on the sidelines when they see something happen third time the first play of a drive has been a penalty on Missouri State Clark looking downfield low throw and dropped and that was missed see right now I've been noticing first half so far when clock throws the ball when he has to either step up or AB pressure in his face little low on the ball not putting a full uh throw I mean I was a running back but I also played baseball and to get that ball to home plate you got to put that whole body in it sometimes you got to fall down not saying that Clark has to fall down that on them passes like that but you got to make sure you get the full body into the throw play action pass almost batted down great job closing on the outside flag down on the near side of the field didn't see what happened there maybe a pass interference on the defense but again Blitz Again by Kansas defense getting in the face of Clark disrupting his rhythm to try to throw the ball in complete a pass down number 72 the offense 5 yeny still second down Mark Hutchinson Wonder Man Down wasn't a wide receiver screen or anything like that it was a straight pass I wonder what happened why'd he get up the field too far six penalties against Missouri State to just one against Kansas it was the big one though on the roughing the passer call but now second and 20 for the Bears handoff big contact between Wright and Rich m Miller the motion of that play almost looked like a pass but it was a handoff looked like a Statue of Liberty handoff he kind of pump fake real hard and gave it to uh Manny underneath hand off good play design there by Missouri State third and 17 throwing out into the flats across the 25 and Out of Bounds at the 27 yd line about eight yds short of a first down you got Sheldon Manny right there in the series right now maybe the two the two-minute back for Missouri State giving jardi right a rest here but now it's Fourth and long 20 seconds to go Minnesota state putting the Rock right now Grant burette out there from Missouri State Trevor Wilson deep to return waves to the fair catch again at the 30 yd line with 13 seconds on the clock Kansas with one timeout do you take a shot here or do you go to the break oh i' I'd take one shot here one shot 13 seconds and it's other side of the field if it gets intercepted you know then you got field position on your side so one shot here maybe one run just to see what the defense is thinking to see what the coordinator thinking one run here and then next play to go into half throw it deep to see what happened there's beans numbers tonight pretty good so far throw it to the edge too don't let them catch it in Middle Field where they got where they got a chance to run the ball make sure it goes out of bounds goes deep Kansas had that one drive stopped by a turnover the fumble by Daniel highshaw Bean will throw it looking downfield across the middle dangerous spot there and Jared Casey took a little bit of a shot right look like maybe an elbow got hit there he looks okay though but yeah you want to be careful putting your tight end or your receiver in that situation you had a linebacker underneath coverage and safety coming down on the lay to hit too even though he's a big guy don't want to put don't want to put that hurt on the big guy with that pass like that now Kanas will go to the half leading Missouri State 17-10 and a ball game here in La it is um to be honest you know didn't really Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium yeah okay there's Jaylen Daniels we've seen him we saw this in pregame he was out there warming up running around throwing a little bit we're seeing it again here at halftime not certain that we're going to see him but he's obviously close enough that he's dressed tonight right it must not be that bad but KN one coach liod and the way he prepares players he's not going to push the issue at this point in the game beaten is doing a really good job managing offense along with the receivers making big plays yes done a nice job but you're missing the Big 12 offensive preseason player of the year he's on every award watch list that you can find right now he missed four games last year due to injury and it's back tightness that has been the issue through throughout fall Camp he's kind of been in and out but from everything we heard we thought we would see him tonight yeah we did you know we watching film seeing the stats seeing the records being broken in the bowl game you know and this time of the year having the training camp everybody is adjusting physically your body's getting a little beat up it's sore and tired and I remember one year my junior year going into the 97 season I halfway through Camp I spazzed out in my back and and had to go to chiropractor get stretch my legs a little bit more so it might be something where wasn't that bad you know not it hope doesn't look that bad for Jaylen but something to where you know what we can hold him for a shelf but it's going to be still like I mentioned a very tough game next week going against biman and A9 that's not going to be an easy game going into the Big 10 they still have plenty of weapons Jason Bean has been tremendous Dev Neil their star running back pre-season all Big 12 Kansas you know the preseason offensive player of the year you got three members of your back field basically in offensive line on that list with Jaylen Daniels Devon Neil and their Center Mike nitzki all on the preseason all Big 12 list they've got some serious star power in those 10 returners on the offensive side of the ball and that's what probably keeps coach liopo from getting sleep at night where he knows he has a backup quarterback and he has guys that can make up the difference as we've seen today in this game they're holding water against Missouri State even though the two pushes to from the errors we talked about in the first half and the turnover too still able to weather this storm against Missouri State Bears to get them have the lead here going into the second half gross sends it away be fielded at the 5 yd line by Trevor Wilson coming back across the field out of the 25 breaks through across the 30 dropped at around the 31 yd line talked about these Trio receivers here's a couple of them Luke grim and Lawrence Arnold they've made their mark on this game a little bit yeah they're having their day they're out there they're using their size they're getting open you know the tempo play that these two receivers help get that ball down the field Lawrence with his big catch and then Grim to cap it off with the the corner route in the in the right of the end zone something that is you may want to go back to if you got that high Tempo offense where Missouri could not get ready that helped him get the ball in the end zone still Jason Bean at quarterback looking downfield on the first play caught near the 45 and dropped at the 46 yd line one of those big tight ends Trevor Cardell you got big 65 255 Junior right there getting his big mints on the ball DB is not really able to I'll say knock the ball out because those Ms grab it and gets it tucked in do a good job getting a first down on the first play out of Lee Summit West High School and Lee Summit Missouri they've had some good ones come out of that program see Bean numbers one touchdown almost 16 yards great day so far for bean first and 10 at the 46 Bean wants to keep this and get outside gets a great block across the 50 knocked out near the 45 yd line Jared Casey on the Block outside yeah Bean has some speed you're seeing it as he gets around that edge here you see the offensive line they get that edge for him and he has a bleed blocker I believe tight end in front of him and he's able to get to the pace so those that defense does not react the way Missouri's defense is acting right now can see Bean getting down the sidelines real fast got love those tight ends mandale Kansas planville Kansas and Lee some at Missouri some blue collar guys out there for the j-hawks oh yeah that's how that's the big guys like to move the ball Bean on a wheel route trying to touch passing in there looking for Doug aelon on the sideline to a million there could not quite get a good coverage by Missouri State there but nice play design they could not not get a million there with the ball can make the connection Dylan Simmons on the coverage from Missouri State third and one at the 45 let's get the first down here Casey in motion Neil up the middle and they do have the first down pushes his way near the 40 might have been dropped just shy of the 40 yd line but they move the chains yeah mindset there is you have a third and short third and medium and the Run game is kind of is there like it has been today for Kansas there's no it's not hard think about you know go to the run you know keep it simple keep it easy but then later in the drive you're getting close to the Red Zone that's when you start bringing in the the plays the misdirections we've been seeing from KU all all first half so far first and 10 Casey's getting his steps in in motion again Bean flips it out to the big man lowers the shoulder but a nice tackle in open field Mason Fairchild on the reception big tight end there Fairchild upper classman knows what to do with the ball after he catches it drops his shoulder here on the DB and I'm definitely impressed by the DB also coming in and making that uh making that hit bringing the big guy to the ground yeah that's Avery pal 510 175 taken down 64 260 yeah no thank you yeah if I'm coaching this team you better know how to tackle people I don't care how big you are so good job there on the defensive back second and three bean turns and hands to Neil cuts it up field and Neil has another first down for the j-hawks and Neil is getting Pati it now letting his Old Line work for him letting them get to their run fits and then the go the holes open up not a whole lot of yardage that was about four yards though and that's what you want he has that average right now right before half it was 10.2 it's going to go down a little bit but he consistently going to pick up the little yardage when he's patient letting his guy big guys get in front of him almost n yard yards per carry for Deon Neil had the big 48 yd touchdown run to kick things off first and 10 at the 29 Bean quick throw outside manto man coverage inside the 20 that's Quinton Skinner on the grab tackled by mcmurren so mcmurren got to be careful cuz Kenner got that ball crisp and almost came out of that the s for him so good job securing that tackle because if he did that would have been touchdown right there and right now CA Kansas is getting in the rhythm of offense run here pass here you know misdirection play doing the things that makes them feel comfortable running this offense and you see that right now so this play this drive may come in a big win Bean throwing again they get the first down kind of an awkward catch out there for Skinner again mcmurren on him another first down yeah Arnold wasn't ready for the block the play was developed and a little bit too fast for Arnold that's why he's kind of looking that body mechanics or his body mannerism he's not happy right now cuz he didn't didn't did not get in the right position to make the block for his teammate there that could have been a touchdown right there if he was ready that a short gain but another first down this is that Kansas offense we're used to it wears on you it's the screen plays is the outside zone is making you you know stay in your Gap or get out there to the edge fast cuz if not you're going to get beat hand off the other direction some space here into the 5 yd line and into the end zone touchdown Dylan McD his first in a jhawk jersey the transfer from Buffalo hey this looked like one of them old Nebraska drives where you start wearing on the defense laying heavy on the defensive line and that's what you saw with jhawk offensive line just little here little yards here little hards there you see the ball cut up field outside Zone play but it then Cuts up straight up field and then keeps everybody outside the Gap so then the the running back can get right into the end zone untouched McDuffy a 1,000 yd rusher a couple years ago at Buffalo had 11 touchdowns spent four years there three of them with Lance lied that kick is good 24- 10 getting a little separation defense is getting worn out a little bit now for Missouri State so Kansas offense is starting to get in Rhythm looking good down as a Kansas jhawk to cap a nine playay 69 yd drive over four minutes and 22 seconds coming off the clock there 2410 Jayhawks lead Missouri State I don't know what that guy's got going on right there he's getting ready for Halloween all right okay a little bit early but I like it half away so he's he's testing things out crowd loving it here in lawence kicking off year three of the L slide poed era hoping to make it 3 and0 in season openers under the head coach boed away and into the zone for a Touchback you notice that drive no clock stoppages after first down that is a rule change this year in college football the clock does not stop on an offensive first down except with less than two minutes in the second and fourth quarter couple others there you can't call consecutive timeouts in a single dead ball period and then the first and third quarter they're not going to extend for an untimed down they will just enforce that on the first play of the following quarter gotta I see a lot of coaches messing up on that number two one right there doing consecutive timeout calls I see coaches get the Itchy treeing figure to pull it but sometimes they can't and in motion Clark flips It Forward here trying to get to the edge it's sharp and he stumbles forward for a few yards good job by the defense pushing him stringing him out but sharp was still able to get a few yards off the edge there good job by the receiver to watch his blocks be patient and then find the crease to get him up field just for a few yard game right there said Rich Miller's name quite a few times from that middle linebacker spot for Kansas defensive coordinator Brian Borland speaks very highly of him said he's their coach on the field handoff here for wri trying to get near the 30 but bottled up at the 29 yd line good outside Zone play right there was able to get something out of it you right one back that he's going to do what he can he beat y right there brought his own ER picked up one yard maybe two but you still got to keep your defense on this I think both offenses have done this to both defenses you know run pass back and forth to keep the I say selection going and keep that defenses keep both defenses honest Missouri State just one for seven on third down so far tonight crowd into it here on Third and five Clark barking signals changing play here saw something in the coverage sharp shifts over pressure coming off the Ed both sides they wrap up Clark throws and completes it somehow to Sharp who is swallowed up by Marvin Grant lost yard is there it looked like he made the adjustment Clark I'm talking about in his Auto ball so he makes the adjustment not quite the right adjustment you got Robinson coming at your face gets the ball out is completed but the receiver gets kned backwards by the defender from ku's defense still making big plays of behind the line of scrimmage still having that aggressiveness and now we got a penalty here on the punt well it is fourth and six false start offense or off sides for the defense one of the two wouldn't be quite enough for a first down yeah offside defense defense still fourth down so fourth and one maybe yeah fourth and one but it's still going to punt punt team does not leave the field leopo lipo still does not like that don't want penalties that can cost you burette sends it away spiraling punt Fair caught again by Trevor Wilson at about the 28 yd line we'll take a break Kansas's offense in a groove right now up two scores here in the third eful loving this offense that they've seen go on a 170 run after falling behind 10-7 Jason Bean back out there at quarterback we talked to their offensive coordinator Andy codel Nikki about being sticking around even though knowing Jaylen Daniels is the guy ahead of him and he said look you have to credit him for making a tough choice with what he's put on film the last couple years dual threat quarterback but said Jason's just a guy who likes what they're doing here at Kansas wants to be a part of this rebuild and cck he prays the mature decision by Jason Bean to stay here and look at the impact he's already having as he gets set to lead this drive and Devin Neil is upended in the back field that's the senior DB young the fourth right there with the big hit so but back to being yeah I mean to make that decision to stay knowing that Jaylen Daniels is here a guy that you we know as the quarterback here but to be basically know your role as a teammate and come here and still be productive and be positive and I say at the college level when you learn that then you you're growing a lot and so you're getting ready for the next level of ball we've seen the transfer portal lately for a guy at the quarterback position with the skill set Jason Bean has cotal Nikki said look he'd have been a hot commodity I'm sure throwing it out wide here on second long and the jump there from Tory Lain The Versatile red shirt junr from Rockdale Texas is yeah I like oon I've seen haven't seen him enough in this game you know big jump right here but he is very athletic he's a running back he's a wide receiver he's basically that Swiss army knife player that that could do a lot of big things I'm I'm pretty sure he could kickoff return and punt return as well but somebody that I know later in this season he's going to probably make some a lot of big plays for this KU offense they like their ability to use him in different Personnel groups kind of confuse the defense Bean looking downfield right into a tight window there Mason Fairchild the big tight end on the reception and a first down on Third and long yeah so like I said right now KU is in that Rhythm they're running play set plays pass to run making the defense adjust their coverage from Zone to man to blitz so making that defensive quarter and defensive players from Missouri State work tonight not just sit back and where they know what's coming at them they mix it up good job Andy Ki with the play caller Jason Bean got all day back there too hats off to this offensive line has a lot of experience on it now first and 10 from the 39 yd line Skinner in motion hand off up the middle Neil bounces it outside tackled near the 48 yd line good job by now yeah good job by Neil using his eyes gets the ball approaches the line of scrimmage there's no movement there the hole he was supposed to go to he bounces his outside picks up eight yds second second and short so it gives you know Annie col ly a lot of plays to call in their playbook right now to make this defense work to stop them second and a yard Neil still in the back field Bean running left side trying to get the edge Dr down nice tackle in the back field great fake with the cameraman Jared Lloyd yeah that fake was so good cameraman was watching Neil that didn't have the ball but it was an option play with being trying to get to the edge could not get to the edge that time soaked up by Lloyd from Missouri State there for the tackle little bit of loss of yardage Lloyd played in seven games last year as a true freshman made just seven tackles they call him bird Ryan beard said on his recruiting visit when he called him Jerry said no coach my name's bird and that's what they call him they people don't know the rest of his name wide open exner coverage to the 20 15 tackled near the 10 yd line Quinton Skinner was all by himself so we got the tall receiver just need a little bit more jets in the in the booster there he could have got to the end zone but he gets it down to about the eight maybe the fivey between the eight and five yard line there in the Red Zone KU is now but busted coverage right there with Missouri State somebody definitely in the wrong position of their coverage if it's zoner man they definitely made the wrong read there and got Skinner wide open for a big game for ku's offense now Skinner needs a breather leading the away four catches 77 yards being hand off high Shaw hit hard down low two hands on the ball cuz we know we had that fumble in the first quarter but now two hands on the ball still in in the play so he's probably coming back in here definitely to prove himself from earlier in the game but right now ku's offense is in Rhythm koni Bean Neil Aisha the offensive line the receivers all on getting their getting to their marks catching the ball no drops blocks are there and then being effective and wearing this Missouri State Defense out right now 352 points per game last season was good for second best in the Big 12 Conference second and goal for bean under four to play in the third quarter throwing over the top and twoo high looking for Jared Casey he he's only 6 feet now he's not 6'5 so yeah try to get him in there but he he was a little bit of space just had to put a little less touch on the ball a little too much touch the ball sells a little bit High over the big tight end over the big tight end's hands brings up third and goal ninth play of the drive coming up here for Kansas and this Bears defense come up with a crucial stand here here late in the third quarter this will be a good time to do it get some momentum back in their way air Child In Motion Bean on the keeper to the 5 yd line dancing and he's dropped just inside the three oh uh oh might have a flag coming there a late maybe a late flag a push oh L protecting Bean protecting their quarterback which is an innate thing you got to protect your guy down there especially if he's on the ground you just got little physical getting tackled pushing DBS off that are doing things that they look at and say don't touch my quarterback like that so you know I'm not as a coach I'm not mad at that protecting players but you got to be mindful too where you're at on the field but the the good thing is at the worst case they'll still get three points out of this over sports like Hond number 54 the offense 15 yd peny fourth down that's his first on Sports for the game Michael th Jr [Applause] the DB did get in Bean's face and so the offensive line just doing his job hey still protecting his quarterback you know there's nothing wrong there on his end but it is a call a flag in the referee's eye but DB was in his face and Lio probably can't really tell if he's upset at his player or the referee for the call Taj Chambers was the one in on the Stop and now Seth Keller from 35 yards split the uprights to make it a three-score game 2710 Kansas j-hawks have made it a three score game look at that yes indeed so they finally got control I say of the pace of the game Missouri State came out first half they weathered the storm of K ku's defense being aggressive being fast to the ball got a touchdown M touch the touchdown now the second half now you see what Lio or learned from being at Nebraska being at UNO being at Whitewater where you start to wear on the defense with your run and pass game play selections to make sure the defense stays honest and that's what's going on right now you see a team it's a good team in Missouri State they held up for a point and now at that time it's a little the dam is broken a little bit so another Touchback for Allen well don't forget tomorrow another exciting lineup of games on Big 12 now on ESPN plus first up at 1:00 Northern Iowa and Iowa State lot of question for the Cyclones entering this season then at 2:30 Eastern Kentucky taking on Cincinnati at six Central a triple header Southeast Missouri State Kansas State Central Arkansas Oklahoma State and Texas State Baylor all that coming your way tomorrow on Big 12 now on ESPN plus Labor Day weekend got to love it I love it man hey man you get football and good eating too so enjoy it Clark a little bit of misdirection here down the field open man across the 45 it's brought in by Seldon [Music] Manning and bar here was on the coverage here you got of see that injury he had from the first quarter still Elling him just a tad bit looks like an ankle so right there could not cover man Manny and so beill comes out because he just not up the par right now with that ankle AR throwing again caught this time great move there by right to break free he leaps over a Defender jardier right down to the 26 hey jardier say hey you know what you're not letting me run the ball let me run right I could I could I can run routes I can cat the ball you know what I'm going just jump over this guy get out my way since I can't really run over anybody I'm going make something happen that's what good players do you know what you're not letting me get running yards up between my tackles you know what get me on the edge get me in the wide receiver position I could do that too and make some plays for my team what a play 27 yds from Clark to right from 22 yds to 27 now they do try to run it spinning away but hit hard another tackle for loss for Kansas jardier right is going to F this game them two hits right there he just took by the big uh def defensive ends and D tackles for ku's front I could feel that up here in the booth so but he's trying to make something happen he knows he wants to get the ball down field help his team get in this end zone and get the ball down the field going take a quick breather he's hit by Hayden Hatcher 63 245 at his defensive end spot second and [Applause] 11 Man in Motion Clark has some time now flush forward in the pocket throwing downfield open man inside the 10 they connect again Jamaria Robinson who had the touchdown catch earlier in this game he Clark Is Standing Tall in that pocket he's getting pressure but he steps up he buys himself a little time as he's the crossing receiver over the middle right there good catch and able to secure it all the way to the ground good job there by the receiver for Missouri State K gerin on the stop don't forget that clock keeps on running under a minute to play here in the third quarter first and goal just inside the 10 yd line Jacob Clark a buck 43 and a touchdown in the air hands off this time right trying to bounce it outside dropped at the six Clark kind of got hit award he he got to be careful he looked like he was going to help jardier get a block there but then the defender kind of flew off of jaar's hip as he slung him trying to pick up more yards and fell into Clark so Clark got to be careful there watch himself there uh even though he's trying to help out his teammate there Melo doson was the one it was inadvertent by doson but like you said just kind of spun around into him we got 14 carries 27 1.9 for jardier so yeah he's going to try to push hard do something for his offense knowing that he is a problem when he gets going they don't have to snap it if they don't want to and they will elect not to to the fourth quarter we go it will be second and goal from the 6yd line for Missouri State the Kansas J Hawks 15 minutes going up the fifth fourth quarter from their third straight one and no start under Lance lold now on ESPN Plus at the University of Kansas David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium with a j-hawks lead Missouri State 27-10 but the Bears knocking on the door wonder what has been a great crowd tonight a great atmosphere who is excited about this 2023 season under Lance SL in this new look J Hawks team yeah definitely looking good offensively and defensively see if they this HST outout now to keep the Bears out of the end zone Jacob Clark has orchestrated a great job little end round here they into the end zone easily touchdown Missouri State it's Jamaria Robinson again this time on the ground yeah Robinson with his speed and then with the play call is perfect because you have the formation set to where we're running downhill for you but you know what we're going to just fake you and then do a a Jet Sweep here and hand it to the one of the fastest guys on the field on our offense to get a easy touchdown right there for the Bears six plays 76 yds just under three and a half minutes you had passes of 18 22 and 27 all to different targets on that drive and it finishes with Robinson on the ground the extra point good and we have a 10-point ball game with 1457 to play yeah with the two differences of uh I say scoring timing right now it's just been just one or two plays that makes the difference in this game for both teams point lead here in Lawrence Jamaria Robins in his second touchdown of the night their head coach Ryan beard talked about some of these young receivers going to need to step up this year after what they lost which was four their top five C pass catchers last season Robinson been one today who has really done that short kick Fair caught at the 23 yd line a 10-point game we have to to take a chance to talk about art Haynes who will be in his 44th season on the mic for Missouri State Games he's been a voice of the Bears for over four decades a Missouri Sports Hall of Famer he's had a life-threatening battle with West Nile virus that actually began last football season in September he will return to the booth for home games though this fall he's also a longtime host of the Kansas City Chiefs pre and postgame shows so somebody who I can remember since I was a very young kid listening to him on those broadcasts but great to see he's going to be back on the games this season nice 1977 was a good year year I was born in St Wars came out and art started connota there you go Bears fans have been listening to his voice for a long time as we see McDuffy on the carry here to start the drive for Kansas looking to eat up some clock they put together some long drives here this offense wasn't able to punch it in the last time but overall they've moved the ball really smoothly yeah they have his big means big trouble when you see Duffy he's the third back in there now and so Neil um haaw been in there as well so when you got to you third back this is my position my freshman year my was the third fourth back coming off the bench even though it's a tight score this is part of the offense where they getting in Rhythm and making sure everybody's fresh that's going to have the ball in their hands and trying to get that offense going down into a score touchdown McDuffy again worked out pretty good for you yeah it did you I'm not complaining big guys up front they going to put the the offensive line telling me they going to put the ball in the end zone I'm like all right let's go yes sir Mr uh Graham and Mr uh Taylor no problem I had to give you a little grease though because we were looking at your numbers against Kansas you only had 45 yards in one of the three meetings with them well LP had a good reason LR a guy by the name of Lawrence fielders came back to the field so we had to split carries great throw into a tight window there for the first down up to the 41 yd line yeah nice I mean just squeeze it in there I got teammate too by the number four he W he wore green and gold and the g on his helmet and he would throw it into covers like that cuz he knew he could he said I got on AG I got the arm strength I can get in there I'm like you make me nervous when you have three Defenders and just one green and gold jersey sitting over there but right there Bean was able to get it in that window little Brett F love there oh yeah all right that's a career highight 20 completions today for Jason Bean had 19 at Duke back in 2021 hand off on first down some space for McDuffy up the middle nice gain there on first down for about six yards yeah so this is the part of the the game I remember Edgar Bennett my old running back coach used to tell me this is uh is either ground and pound or you say you know you're not going to come out to the game until your tongue is dragging on the ground so for McDuffy High Shaw if he goes back in and even nail gets back in this is all Run game right now for KU let's drain this clock and with the new rule that clock goes a little bit faster for both teams or any team that's running the ball like they are right now second and four another hand off here McDuffy breaks through across the 45 a first down near the 42 yd line I remember what e used to say to me coach edar Bennett he said is uh tote City time okay tote City so that's what's going on for McDuffy right now it's tot City you going to run that ball don't even tap your head you know sometimes you tap your helmet when you're tired no I had to that was that was gone you just keep running the ball so that clock says dou zero AG you're staying out there yeah don't even look to the sideline 156 on the ground to just 17 Duffy near the 40 fighting and then brought down after a twoy gain you got the O lineman Jersey are that blue is a little darker on some of the jerseys cuz they're sweating now they're working they're working at defensive front for Missouri State wearing on them a little bit I've been you know I've been in this neighborhood and that's good when you see the D lineman they pop the kickstand they have that hand on the hip and then that other leg is kind of like on their calf that's the kickstand the rest position that means they tired so so good thing seeing that for Missouri I say for ku's offense seeing that from Missouri defense in line Bean pump fakes looking down the sideline great catch adjusting there Trevor Wilson catch Wilson and it was almost a route of the same pattern he was trailing I can't remember didn't all right we'll see he was triling his teammate with the same route both rail routes back to back rail routes and was able to be was smart enough catch he under further review was smart enough to see the coverage that the main coverage was on the wide receiver so he could throw it to the running back that was in the second rail route behind the receiver running the first part of that rail so here we go got play action pump fake for the receiver but then comes back to the running back that's or I say slot receiver that's right behind Skinner there and good great catch by by Wilson to help his quarterback out Ball's behind him but he but he turns locates the ball ball all hands that's how you supposed to do it wide receiver style right [Music] there look like certainly the feet were in I didn't see the feet I wasn't even looking at the feet I was looking at that ball not from the other angle the feet were in but that angle I'm not sure they might be looking at the ball like you said did it jar a little bit when he came down yeah it did move a little bit and you got to you know the rule is you got to make sure you secure it that means no movement into either tucking it or coming to the ground and even and then the ground may move it as well so you got to be smart about that as as the receiver of the ball we've seen this for probably about 15 years now in a play calling completing the catch has changed outcomes of games and not let's see feed are down the referee's blocking right there you can't really see the ball you can see his feet they're of and on the ground all at the same time but we can't see the ball movement at them moment that's secure it there right at the [Music] end really tough to [Music] tell let's see here Ball's coming in stops plants turns around gets his hands on the ball slows it down one foot two feet ball never touches the ground does move but it never touches the ground so I believe I'm putting I don't bet a lot in Vegas but I'm betting right here maybe a little ground touch right there oh yeah there's the ground touch so this might be incomplete they might bring this back but yeah great try for Wilson helping out his quarterback being there that's to be conclusive evidence true to be able to overturn this the ruing on the field is a completed pass obviously going to make this even tougher I think one way or another it might have it would have been incomplete on the field and you review it you might think the same thing but with it completed I just don't know if you have the look yeah not enough evidence not enough movement feet were there back and forth up and down left right left right but then the ball still couldn't really get definite I say ruling on the ball completed pass first down for J Hawks in right at the top of the Red Zone here 16 yard on the play from Bean to Wilson a guy who transferred with Lance SLO from Buffalo where he spent two seasons we've seen Wilson on kickoff return and punt return tonight and there is a receiver still in the game as a receiver in the slot toward the top of your screen em Millian joins him over there hand off going the other direction haaw has space he's got a blocker downfield haaw to the five on his fet touchdown Daniel haaw Jr welcome back they got a problem KU is going to give people headaches this season you got a three-headed monster in terms of Run game wide receivers and you got a defense that's right now only giving up 17 points something they know they got to get better at but now with this run game this is what's going to drive defenses nuts knowing that okay we have Neil he goes down or he sits on the B High Shaw and then you got McDuffy too you got this three-headed monster when you have three running backs that can to the Rock like they are tonight you give a lot of defensive coordinators a lot of linebackers and the lineman uh restless nights here in the here in the Big 12 and here in college football Daniel high shaww back after the injury last season and this is what he does capping an eight Place 75 yard drive with a 24 yd touchdown run the big men some love up front the tight ends and his offensive line who've done a great job tonight oh yeah definitely theyve done an outstanding job and something I learned as a 5-year-old my brothers teaching me how to play running back and they told me you are a running back you are nothing without your off in the line and Haan definitely knows that Duffy understands that and Neil understands that those guys will not pick up yardage without the big uglies as they used to be called back in the day moving people on down the field and out their way all another boot out of the end zone for a Touchback as Kansas has made this a 17-point game with under 11 minutes to play in the fourth quarter Jacob Clark still with some time talking to his offensive coordinator Nick patrino what have you seen from Clark tonight um patience um adjustability where he's got the pressure coming at him he steps up in the pocket pick some yardage up with his leg reads the coverage you know after that first series where you know everything was 100 miles per per hour he settled down he started to read coverage if it was man if it was Zone hitting his open receiver and being smart with the ball hasn't made no I say no big errors out here so doing a good job yeah taking care of the football looking downfield here right as we say that it's picked off Kobe Bryant for the first time this year off the 10 pass the announcers curse I I was hoping I never did this to any athlete out here because I was that athlete one day and I'm pretty sure somebody says something and then I fum with the ball later and this happened to Mr Clark we're praising him and then the announcer curse happens right there with Kobe Bryan getting the interception JB Brown got a couple hands on it there Kobe Bryant was there on the back end all Big 12 preseason team member three picks last year led the team and there is number one this year already game one pick team leader full of enthusiasm we saw him earlier with the I think late hit but something where you knew this just part of his game he's 100 miles per hour all the time and that big play shows it right there hand off Neil back out there at running back look at him keep the legs turning down to the 11 what I say problem when you got guys you got Neil who is the ring leader and then you have McDuffy you got haaw coming in it's a it's like a relay race you know you ran track I ran I was a I was an anchor on the relay and when you say and you want that baton and that's when you get the ball so that's what's going on between haaw McDuffy and Neil straight up running back relay right now A Buck 99 is a team on the ground so far today seven and2 yards per carry all right BC some changes up the play Casey in motion Neil still the back hand off Neil bouncing around hit hard though it's the middle linebacker Jared Lloyd again Lloyd comes in layser Hit and almost came and nil still almost came out of that hit right there if it wasn't for Lloyd's D lineman right behind him he might have came up out of that but good job by Floyd and the defense to keep him in the back field but right now you know the dam is cracking and it's almost pretty much broken right here for this uh Missouri State Defense Bears defense which they've done a really good job but then attrition just sets in you got fresh guys on KU side running the ball and blocking and doing a good job getting down field the first four drives Kans has averaged under four plays per drive but the last four they've been over nine plays per Drive nice good patience again I'm liking Neil running the ball here he's patient letting this big guys get in front get their run fits his wi receivers two on replays I've seen and I've seen on that play too wide receivers are blocking down field and I say that is a credit to the coaching that's a credit to whoever the wide receiver coaches can think of his name right now but good job having those guys skanner and Arnold and and Grim going downfield and blocking for the Run game of Compadres yeah milon had the big block on the high Shaw touchdown run on the last drive now third and five at about the 6yd [Applause] line being throwing with time outside just beyond the reach of his intended target Skinner yeah good play call good route Skinner just I think he was a little too high if he was flatter he could have caught that ball and then turn it up right and basically fall into the end zone or just stretch into the end zone cuz he is a long receiver standing at 65 they will keep the offense on the field here fourth and five they converted at about a 47.2% rate last season on fourth down tough one here though deep in the red zone time out timeout Missouri State first charge time in the half Missouri State hey bipo is putting pedal to the metal along with Andy koni fourth and five and there in offensive formation didn't even think it wasn't even a thought of bringing the field goal formation out or the field goal Personnel out they was like no we want to put it in get six get seven with the pat so with that they're sending a message not just to Missouri state they're sending the message to all the Big 12 and any teams that's on this schedule they got a line night next week so that's big 10 B Lima they like to run the ball and to let them know and to send messages like this right now this is something that were it's going to be on bma's radar you know that defense that offense that they have for their line ey was top in the Big 10 and rushing so and then defensively too they they they got a little bit tighter at the end of their season to get them into a balll game too so this is message sending time you know just where you give something and put it on film for that opposing team that's next week to look at and make sure they got to get ready for this come fourth quarter a great early season test next week here in Lawrence between The Jayhawks in Illinois then Kansas at Nevada and then they host BYU for the Big 12 opener on September 23rd fourth and five being plenty of time flushed a little bit toward the sideline it's close touchdown Devin Neil you go air and by land here so we got the running back catching the PA getting into the end zone for his QB has rushan touchdown has a receiving touchdown Deon Nill starting off having a great start to his 2023 season right now along with being in the rest of this KU offense so nice play action no fake there but really out leveraged the linebacker there DB safety for Missouri State being hyped right there doing his job excited and that's what you want you want to see your players accelbit knowing what they've done they worked hard all training camp during all month of August and is paying dividends right now everybody on his offense is uh hitting on all centers and basically all on the same page five plays 28 yards and a big conversion there from Bean to Neil on Fourth and five in the Red Zone Kansas has flexed their muscles here in this second half 40- 17 yeah another another I say another page out of Tom murn book that I see here in Li pool's offense and team defense is just the endurance so I would love to not only what we seen on the blueprint but seeing practices and how you know there were drills and the endurance was built because that's what you're seeing fourth quarter we were already built for it you know fourth quarter we were fresh you know from the rotation of the running backs to the offensive line and D line on defense and line backers and safety so you're seeing that right now with ku's offensive defense fo here in this second half 4117 they lead Missouri State all smiles there all the person and white teeth smiling put J Hawks I know my man uh shout out to gilber Brown I know he's happy watching this got to love what you've seen from Jason Bean tonight filling in for Jaylen d Dan who is dressed but out with bat tightness and Jason Bean there are not a lot of programs in the country that have somebody like him that can step in true true and so for T and the coaching staff to have this this quarterback Jewel that event that when uh Jaylen D gets healthy going to get interesting look at this a little map here Big 12 expanding Houston Cincinnati UCF and BYU this year and then next year four more coming in Colorado Utah Arizona State and Arizona you look at Colorado tomorrow taking on TCU oh Colorado coming back into the Big 12 what a great job Mr Prime is it Prime coach or prime coach Prime coach Prime that's what it is okay all right first and 10 hand off to right and Kansas all over it in the back [Applause] field tackled by JB Brown Kansas will get one of those new Big 12 teams on September 23rd their big 12 opener against BYU this a tough early season start for Kansas Missouri State's been a great challenge tonight but Illinois next week here in Lawrence and they go to Nevada before they get BYU at home at Texas yes and then UCF none of those are easy games they'll be battle tested very quickly that is intercepted there it is Quinton Lasser his brother quami played here from 2016 to 2021 yeah Quinton making his Mark I knew I wasn't sure I'm pretty sure that was last of his brother or son one of the two but yeah comes away with the pick there 511 junior or senior excuse me and uh now it's it's just one of them things now it's a got to hold on for Missouri State and what's going on right now defense still playing smart it's a zone defense but he plays the guy in his area so good job there by Lasser just giving him a little space but enough time for him to pick the pass off great aware great awareness by that player right there in other DBS and it's still playing hard here in the fourth quarter I love Kobe Bryant celebrating with him on the sideline hard running right here for Savon Morrison new quarterback in the game it's the true freshman Cole Ballard out of Westfield Indiana the son of the Colts GM Chris Ballard 6'2 225lb freshman wow that's a big kid right there and you see I still see the running backs running hard I see wide receivers blocking down field so KU is like I said sending a message but also sticking to what who they are playing four quarters all the way out no matter who's on the field nine yards on the first Carry for the Nebraska transfer Savon Morrison in his second season from the Oscars great experience though for this freshman quarterback working with an experienced back like Savon Morrison in the back field as well yeah being at another school being at my school and coming here to uh produce and help this team out is something great and for that freshman you know true freshman getting real time you know I don't care what the scoreboard says this time is still important I remember my freshman year Oki stayed on a Thursday night ESPN years ago and I didn't get into the fourth quarter but it felt like it was first quarter and the anxiety and nervousness was there but I knew I had to go out there and do my job and that's what you see this quarterback doing right now hand off Morrison hard running near the five and then knocked backwards maybe could have bounced it out just one more jump cut to the outside he walks into the end zone but but I'm okay with that he got a positive gain but if you use your eyes a little bit more there you can get you can walk yourself into the end zone good run run selection right there under 530 to to play Missouri State not going to have the night they wanted on the scoreboard completely are you happy with what you've seen from them if you're Missouri State fan they only returned eight starters this year do you like what you've seen from them 100% I mean I knew going into this game fan commentator what KU was all about what they did last year what they had to get better at and we saw that with their defense stepping up right now turnovers keeping um Missouri State out of the end zone and so right now we try to get into the end zone and he does takes some people with him on a rock [Applause] and sometimes you got to do that as a running back you got to carry people not just your team but the other team as well so good job by the young running back saon Morrison transfer for the Nebraska get his first touchdown first series of the game for him here against Missouri State Bears another chance for the jhawk fans to wave the wheight good job of got he got a little contact with the ball was able to keep the ball in security right there two hands on the ball d and then dragging guys forklift and doing what he has to do to get in the end zone but he does that along with his old lineman they cleared out a couple people you know clean off the pile a little bit and then he does the rest of the job gets the ball into the end zone under five to play in Lawrence all Kansas 4817 over Missouri State this is coach Lance lipold we're used to talking about all things football but right now I want you to hear these four important words about the growing crisis of drug overdoses one pill can kill canons are dying every week from drugs laced today we started at 12 wining 11 D and dropping di since 96 what happened when the big a at the Southwest seven HS count them with six at the net five on the floor and four School stronger we put up threes throw up Deuces and make one thing clear we've always been greater than 12 Kans is up 4817 over Missouri State Travis G the athletic director here at Kansas it's been a great partnership between him and Lance Lio Lance will talk very highly of him and what he's done here at KU bringing stability along with Lance Li himself to this program and a lot of exciting things on the horizon here at the University of Kansas with regards to this football program we'll show you that in just one moment after this kickoff with Kansas up 48- 17 and just under 5 minutes to play through the back of the end zone well the University of Kansas Gateway District construction beginning in December Lance SL PO said these are gamechanging announcements renovations to the stadium it's going to be unbelievable yeah I've been seeing this around college football around the professional Level Sports as well making the stadium more than just the fans come and sit in the stadium and watch football being played there's activities there's things there's restaurants there's a park for family to get together and do things and the kids can play before and after the game so they're making it more and more of a family affair not just a fan Affair when they come to games now these days I've already unveiled upgrades to the Anderson family football complex new weight room new locker room and we got the chance to see videos of the players seeing that for the first time and it's it is unbelievable yeah it's is awesome to see you know these athletes they they work hard they they're in the weight room pushing themselves to to Brink you know running laps running stairs but then when they get when they see the equipment and they see the facilities that these schools are you know building for them to get better at what they're doing if it's football baseball basketball track hockey any sport and even Esports as well um it's it's it's great to see and then for a player it's like you know what I I I got to bust my butt they're spending this money I better get in here and do some work work second and six Rush close to the first down about a couple yards short actually knock down around the 32 their director of sports performance Matt Gilder sleeve was talking about their weight room and said that the company who did it said it was the most customizable weight room equipment that they had done and he said it's all about catering to what Kansas specifically does in their program which I thought was unbelievable I like the sound of that that means I got offens line that likes to push Things downfield Push other players down the field all the time so we going to have weight room built to cater to that so I love it that sounds good to me third and three here Clark that pass is dropped incomplete pass there on third down and you see this defense still bringing the pain you know Crossing route here by the receiver should have count it the first time but he doesn't and gets and pays for it here um so you see ku's defense still bringing it so like I said sending a message they're you know intentionally not sending the message but when you watch film you know bimma his coaching staff watching this film any other team during this season as KU season goes on they'll see a team that's playing four quarters of football all three faets offense defense and special teams almost get there for the [Applause] block lands near the 33 and down there quickly by Missouri state with 321 to play here in the fourth quarter there is mat Gilder sleeve the director of sports performance and here's a look at some of the new toys he has at his disposal and this thing it looks really impressive no I I I still love weights you don't if you can't tell and I can't tell man and I I love I love seeing stuff like this you know so these kids got different machines you can you know move bars up and down you got to pull you know the pull up bar right there hand cleans dead lift squats and so that is the football makeup of lifts that you should be doing and have the new machines the racks that you see right there in their right room will continue to help them to be the players that they are 321 to play lot of new faces out there for the j-hawks little bit of confusion back there but still a gain of about four yards on that first down run by Morrison yeah you know just a little mix up I think it was a more the catch from the center being a shotgun snap wasn't quite handled the right way Morrison was ready for the handoff and so quarterback running back kind of mesh a little funny there but the ball gets handed off he's able to pick up Morrison still able to even with the bad handoff still able to pick up two or three yards here maybe more four you got a second and six right [Applause] now K is happy to let the clock tick right now another handoff Morrison few few more yards there on second down yeah I'll be honest I never didn't think I would say this is I'll be seeing garbage time out here but there's kind of garbage time but it's also still a good time you got young people on the field you got Hiller oh did I say that correctly who you talking about quarterback did I say his name right oh sorry Ballard Ballard sorry I said helard yeah Ballard freshman Savon transfer those these reps are really solid reps like I mentioned earlier third and three looking to the sideline for the calls freshman get a chance here hand off left side that's upfield that's a first down it is so right now Balor and Savon o line tight ends wide receivers that are in right now are getting those reps where it's just builds confidence and it gets them to understand you know this is this is what it feels like when you're in D1 game you know D1 football's going on Missouri state is a good team just right now worn out a little bit more than um one I say a little bit more than expected going into this game so but it's going to have a good season I believe I believe Ryan Barrett and their coaching staff is definitely you know singing their praises and coaching them right so after this game I believe they're going to have a really good season season but this KU team is just a little bit built different by coach liveo and his coaching staff and whether it's new faces for Missouri State or just players in new roles this year for Ryan beer they have certainly learned a lot tonight this is what's coming up for them at UT Martin next week their first home game coming against Utah Tech or excuse me yeah Utah Tech on the 23rd they've got Southern Illinois and then North Dakota State that's going to be a tough one coming in up in October so a tough start to the season for them just like the j-hawks but Ryan beard if you're a Missouri State fan you like what you saw from the 34 year old's team tonight 100% there nothing to hang their heads about they play good football solid football and then you know Avalanche of Jayhawks just happened so you know great start to the both team Seasons not a lot of injuries not people a lot of not a lot of players beaten up you know Barry Hill he has the ankle but you saw some good football here today both teams good well coached uh well played you know only the one personal foul was actually just a more of excitement thing from Barry Hill or from excuse me wasn't Barry Hill somebody else can't think of it uh uh Austin Austin Booker um sorry about that but good game and something I know like I mentioned already I know my man Big G big Gilbert Brown he's smiling right now up I think he's back home in Detroit right now um about his Jayhawks he always told me about the rock talk song and everything so I got to experience that but to see them play what they're playing in they're playing at a high level already you know so now to get match up with a big 10 school next week you'll definitely we'll see how far they are into midseason or into football form in terms of getting into their routine and being the team that they were mid-season last year before some of the big hits came in terms of the big games that they had to face team D1 caliber team same as them so um excited for both teams that have a great season but really you know with the I say home homegrown guys coming from Wisconsin and Lio uh staff to see how they go I'm going to keep an eye on them for this whole season well and it was really the Jason Bean show tonight stepping in for Jaylen Daniels out with back tightness and they didn't lose a step offensively no they didn't you know Bean came in you know before the game we don't know nothing about Jaylen we know he's not playing at the back but throw there you know nice high tempo a drive right there but then the big play right there to uh Skinner pum fake and then just finding receivers being smart about the ball no interceptions no bad decisions even with the speed too
