Joshua Palmer On Brenden Rice’s Physicality | LA Chargers

Intro was a slow walk in here um alhamdulillah there's a lot of guys that are now that are injured in across the NFL so I'm just very blessed and I'm thankful to be able to walk in here um and not have to worry about any surgeries or anything so I'm extremely thankful for that where do you feel like Where is the offense at the uh the offense is at right now obviously you guys have been without Justin now for two weeks but you know Jim and Greg have talked about you know Full Speed Ahead just where do you feel like you guys are at as a group in a unit I think that we're still growing as Growing as an offense an offense um even with Justin even when he was here I feel like we were still growing as an offense is because it was still the new offense so now it's we're in preseason mode so we're just trying to get all the all the nuts and bolts together and to figure out exactly how we're going to go about our business less concerning for you that Justin Davis Justin's missed this time just because you you're one of the few guys in skill position that actually has you know time task with Justin you have that sort of built-in Rapport feel like when he comes back he won't really really skip a beat does that sort of lessen the concern for you individually with him missing a couple weeks here I'm more concerned about his health yeah so he'll come back Justin Davis health when he's ready I know Justin is putting in the work to get back and once he's once he's ready to come back I think it will be it'll be like like he wasn't here yesterday you know what I'm saying so I think it'll be easy with the lack of hitting compared Physical play to the old days in practice uh a lot of the oldtimers say excuse me that they wanted more physical play because you had to get used to it when the season starts where do you stand on that because you're in a different era and yet you're getting you guys getting banged up anyway I think you only need Getting hit to get hit one time to know what it feels like and to to be ready for it for the rest of the season I know we got 17 weeks to get hit and uh if we couldn't take a hit then we're playing the wrong sport so I feel like I don't I don't know I don't really reading too much about the old days where guys tackling in practice and stuff like that um it's a long season and like I said if you can't take a hit then you're play basketball what is uh jumped out to you Brenden Rice about Brandon rice through the the spring and now through training camp uh he's a competitor he's he's strong he's big he's physical he's a big physical receiver um I think he Embraces contact so you know whenever I watch him I expect him to be that physical guy that you know he's going to move you off the line he's going to jump try to jump over you he's going to block with tremendous effort and that's a big emphasis in our room is just blocking um but B rice is just a guy that you know wants wants to be better every day you mentioned the young guys going Young Players Asking Questions to you you know if if they have any questions stuff like that has that kind of gone up a little bit now with training camp continuing to progress or is everything kind of stay uh yeah I'm getting ask a lot of questions and I I do my best to answer them um try not to lead them the wrong way I just try to T teach them what I've been taught or especially what coach sanj is teaching um and yeah pretty much that like they'll ask me Nuance things on Nuance routes and stuff like that or how do I do this or how do I do that and I try to give them the honest answer um but within the scheme of the offense I don't want to get too too Off Script with with routes and stuff but no they're they're asking they're asking a lot more questions your room is very young Evolution of Chargers Defense uh so how are you seeing the evolution of these guys getting to feel like okay this is what it's like to be a pro now uh I think they're just I think it's a lot of I think it's a it's it's faster for them uh like the coaches always say you know the DBS you still might beat the DB but the difference between um a bad DB and a good DB is a DB is the makeup speed so don't relax because guys are going to be on you you know when you're coming across the middle the safety is going to be there it's not like Tennessee versus UTP and the safety is nowhere to be found you know so um guys are coming and guys are are are ball Hawks and they're they're coming to tear somebody's head off so it's just getting them used to the speed of the game and more mental speed um of course physical speed but mental speed too because you have to make the reads a lot faster and quicker so I think that's just what they're getting used to you uh mentioned Blocking the blocking being an emphasis in the room obviously everyone on offense coaching staff wise talked about what the mentality of the team is is going to be how different is the approach with blocking with this staff compared to like what you've been in previous offenses in the league in the receiver Approach to blocking room at least there always been an emphasis um to block hard you know everyone knows that clip of Keenan blocking the DN against the Raiders um so we're like my block for JK on the touchdown so we we we proud ourselves in in blocking especially we don't like when the our guy makes a tackle so we're just going to take it up a notch you know and just do a little bit more um and be that bully that coach Jim wants us to be
