Clemson versus Georgia: This is Make or Break for Garrett Riley

the last time Garrett Riley coached against Georgia it was not good at all so the good question is in this Clemson vs Georgia game coming up in five days in Atlanta 12 o'clock ABC is this maker break not just for Clemson but for Garrett Riley I'm going to talk about that in more just second welcome to the champ Channel happy Monday to you August the 26 I'm glad you're here unless you're a into that and more got still St boy Indian Land South Carolina good to see you in here so let's Dive Right In the last time that Garrett Riley coached against Georgia was in the national championship and when you think about a national championship game you think maybe a close game you think a fight you think even if it's more of a dominant game on one side than the other maybe two touchdowns maybe three but Garrett Riley only mustered up seven points against Georgia on January the 9th 2023 when they played the Georgia Bulldogs unfortunately for Garrett ntcu Georgia did just a little better they scored 65 that's right just in case you forgot Garrett Riley's offense scored seven points and the Georgia Bulldogs scored 65 TCU only had nine first downs on the other hand Georgia had 32 first downs TCU only had 188 yards total 36 on the ground by the way Georgia had 589 Georgia didn't turn over the ball at all while TCU managed to Fumble once and throw two interceptions it was a terrible evening for the TCU Horned Frogs but right after that kind of a magical thing happened dbos Sweeny goes after Garrett Riley now Garrett Riley obviously is the brother of Lincoln Riley the head coach at Southern Cal former head coach at uh Oklahoma they're both known for being offensive Minds but before Garrett Riley pauled there before he was at TCU he was with I believe it's sunny dock if if my memory Serv M correct the head coach over at SMU and then before that he was at uh uh appalachin state in a few different roles then he was at uh East Carolina or Kansas there were that might have got my timeline jumbled up there but he was at both of those schools so Garrett Riley has been on a trajectory to become what I mean and you can't blame him a a a major D1 head coach and that trajectory has been almost straight up I mean it's it's it's taken very little time and when you consider all those roles that I just named out are different teams in various roles uh he's done that in about I don't know 12 or 13 years not too shabby and he's he's a younger guy he's what 34 or 35 somewhere in there but that night in Georgia it didn't go so well but and this is where I pick up where I stopped just a second ago dbos Sweeny hits hits him up and says hey I would love for you to come run the offense for Clemson I just let go of Brandon streer it was tough it was a tough break he he had worked for me for a long time but it was just time to move on he goes and he hires uh Garrett Riley and we remember all of the articles that came out all of the talking points that came out on major media Media Local Clemson media that Garrett Riley would have better athletes at Clemson you remember it I remember it All God's Children if they want to remember it remembers it in fact I found an old an old um article and I say old it was right around the time that Clemson hired Garrett righ and it's talking about it this is from taking the Southland and it's talking about Garrett Riley's offenses and then it was talking about the talent that he actually accomplished those offensive numbers with and it was alluding to that Clemson had a lot more Talent as they should you know at that time Clemson was only five years removed from their last National Championship right so TCU who had some good moments with Gary Patterson but things you know started taking a down downward turn they brought in Sunny docks and Sony do gets him to the National Championship nobody wants to go to the National Championship if in that game you have to lose 65 to7 I think I'll pass but that article showed the athletes you know roundabout the athletes that he was working working with versus the athletes that he would inherit at Clemson and then there was last year last year and your product on here but anyway getting back to what I was talking about there was questions about last year there was no creativity last year and here's where we really get into the meat of this video there were there was absolutely no creativity last year and then afterwards you start hearing things like well you know he's got to learn his Personnel well you didn't have to learn his Personnel at TCU you the team that didn't have nearly the talent that Clemson had so that excuse you can shoot holes in it and it doesn't float it's not logical you could know very little about football or Sports in general take a five minute cliffnotes version of what is college football and what makes a good team and you would come to that conclusion as well that's that that's nonsensical then we get to uh we we get to the whole thing of was Dabo uh uh um calling some of the plays and there's articles you can go back in the archive remember it's not even a year ago you can go back and read the comments that were made so I mean last year the offense did not look creative whatsoever no matter whose name was on it they should be embarrassed you know if you go back in time especially when Oregon and Chip Kelly started doing their thing and that's a while ago for some of you you're like oh that was just a few years ago try like 15 uh Tred you know 13 years ago that's how fast this thing is flying by it's like a lot of Clemson fans is like we were just in a national championship um what year is this year TW 2024 yeah when did we play that National Championship at the very beginning of 2019 so it's over 5 years ago DeShaun Watson's Championship was eight over eight years ago so you know get a calendar mark it and you'll understand why some people are a little more unhappy than others the point the point here and I'm just going to get to it is you go back to that some of these offenses that were different they created offenses to work with the Personnel that they had that's how you get different styles of offenses I'm not a big ex's and O guys I've told you this over and over and over but the point is you do have different offensive Styles different defensive Styles why personnel and I don't know what it is we saw it plague Florida State this past week they just kept taking DJ and dumping the past out here and dumping the pass out there I I'm to the point with quarterbacks yes you need to try to break them into the game but after a while your offense you're going to have to stretch the field and you're going to have to get creative because you start playing the game not to lose it and do you know what happens when you play a game not to lose it you lose it the irony so there was no creativity last year and that concerns me that concerns me because well let's just paint this picture there are some teams who their offensive line is so good and their running backs are so good they're stacked like they can just rotate guys in and out you remember when Clemson used to be like that you you remember you remember when etn was the featured back but right behind him lyj Dixon was right behind I mean he would come in and just absolutely drill it you remember those times I do it unbelievable but there's some teams their offensive line and their running back room is so flipping good that they can line up basically against anybody and you know it's coming and you can barely stop it Clemson's not at that place now maybe in a few years between Matt Luke's development and his his coaching and recruiting please recruit can set up Clemson to be in that place but right now as of right now's the 26th Clemson plays on the 31st so in five days that problem's not going to be solved folks Clemson cannot line up against Georgia's front seven snap the ball hand it off right up the gut over and over and over again because Clemson's line has so many questions and though mafa can create running Lanes he's going to get himself hurt and Georgia will eventually take take it away so what is your offensive coordinator supposed to do comes up with ways they're supposed to come up with a way to create space create plays create explosiveness keep the defense on their heels we haven't seen that we haven't seen that in a while folks what we have started playing and this really go goes back to the DJ days and it it I mean think about it Florida State just lost offensively because they played the same game that you and I had to sit there and endure in 2021 2022 and then again last year in 2023 it was just a different quarterback and a different a different coordinator but the plays looked eerily the same and I've had people come on here going hey I can see the difference there might have been a little difference here and there but didn't Clemson lose four ball games last year that is what concerns me no creativity I've given this example before and I'm going to give it again if there's 65 of viewing here I jent it's good to see y'all in here assassin Jeff sire Big John Jay but there there is a coach that is very well known I won't even call his name but I actually knew this coach I actually worked some of their some of their events with the with the team over a number of years and I actually knew this guy this is not a hearsay story I was there and this person had been successful had won had won conference championships had been in the top 25 had been even made probably top 15 within their sport but as the years went on what did time do time changed things people started people who who used to lose to this person consistently they changed with the times and eventually they started beating this team and so this person was not recruiting at the level that they used to but they were still getting good players those good players just could not they couldn't run the old system so one of the assistant coaches who I also knew who was brilliant by the way coached to NBA star I I mean if I name dropped here it everybody would know these individuals I'm not going to talk about it because I don't want to be on the bad side of either one of these guys because I think a lot of them I have a lot of respect for them but I was there and I saw it um I saw the changes over the years I saw the lack of wanting to adapt over the years so this uh this assistant coach went to the head coach behind closed doors and said listen we're we're not getting the results like we used to because these players they're good players but they can't run the old system they can't but if we make some changes and this person came there I don't know this for a fact but knowing this person they probably came there with the changes they had the relationship with this head coach that went back many years to actually say this to them so there was that said if we make these changes we can get back to winning we can get back we can get back to to doing what we used to do and that that's win conference championships and make a run and the coach looked at him and said I won championships I won conference championships with this system we will continue to run this system we will continue to do this and we're not changing a thing that person retired out of their organization with a severe losing record for multiple years so that went from winning conference championships to losing every year I've been talking about a lot of games barely barely winning barely I mean probably to a 40% winning percentage I think one year it even got down to 35% folks you're like why did you give me that long- winded story about someone you don't want to drop their names again out of respect to them because I think a lot of them it's because I always say coaching matters adjusting matters what won 5 years ago will not win right now what won games 20 years ago is not winning right now okay maybe you don't have some of the offensive players that you used to recruit maybe you're not getting the Trevor lawrences or the desan Watson's anymore but last I checked Boise State used to terrorize people with two and three star players it's called scheming and what bothers me about this is that Garrett Riley's scheme last year with players who were better no matter your opinion about Clemson and their playability and their recruiting over the past five years no matter your opinion it is a statistical fact that Clemson has better football players than TCU on the offensive side of the football and what did we see we there are local high schools here in the upstate of South Carolina that could call just as good if not better plays than what we were seeing on Saturdays this past year and my point in this if this is not Garrett Riley Garrett I'm not calling you out first of all you don't care what what I think and I'm not by the way I'm not dogging Garrett Riley here folks I'm just saying this guy has been in almost a straight up trajectory in his career and the only game that's made him look terrible was the team was against a team that we play in five days he can only muster up seven yards I mean seven yards seven points it was almost that bad seven points he can only muster up 188 total yards on them and seven points and then we saw saw last year this is a maker break for not just Clemson and for us fans who has been pulling for Clemson like me I was talking about the other day I remember the Ford years Hatfield years West Bowen now obviously now Sweeny I remember it I'm going to pull for the Tigers either way if they lose Saturday and unfortunately I think they are I hope they don't hope I at Crow I hope I get to celebrate that they win the game but if they win the game it'll be because the offense actually shows up and that they're creative and that they're not playing to lose because my fear is that Clemson's going to show up with that same offense we've been seeing for the past three years and that Georgia team whether you love them or hate them or whatever they're not going to give a rats rear in about anything any of the talking points in cson South Carolina they're not going to care about 16 or 18 or six playoff appearances or how many consecutive 10 win Seasons they are going to line up this coming Saturday at 12:00 in Atlanta and they are going to play whoever is in front of them and their number one goal will be to demolish them and if Clemson comes in with anything that remotely looks like their game plan not just last year but over the last three or four years losing by 14 points would be a glorious event compared to what would be coming to us this coming Saturday and it's because Clemson's offense is scheming scheming apparently not to lose and that's what it looks like this game is a make or break for Garrett Riley and I give you I'll give you a little uh a little prediction if Garrett Riley's offense throughout this season obviously he goes out and he plays weight Forest Clemson will beat them which I take that back Clemson could only score 17 points against them this past season but if Garrett Riley's offense does not look that great at Clemson there's a lot more going on behind closed doors than just Dabo talking to him about the offense no I'll guarantee you he and his wife and his inner circle are going to be talking about Ways to Leave Clemson South Carolina because this would be the first time in his career that's relatively short that he's not looked good that he's not been seen as an as an upand cominging coach following in the steps of his brother and he will leave Clemson he won't have to be fired he will find a he'll find a job in the Big 12 he'll find a job he'll find a job on a coaching staff in the SEC somewhere that's how that's how much I think this goes beyond just Clemson in their offense I think that professionally if Garrett Riley looks bad this year because someone else is helping call the plays or telling him not to call this or call that we don't know what's going on there Garrett Riley to preserve his career will leave Clemson South Carolina and this Georgia game is the make or break point for not only the Clemson Tigers but for Garrett Riley and down anyway but Jay you make a great point when you get into games uh whether it be against Georgia Ohio State in years past it was Florida state in years past it was against Oklahoma for Clemson it was against LSU it was against Alabama when Nick Sabin was just absolutely destroying everyone at that moment you had to have really good coaches with really good players with a really good game plan and a willingness to adjust your scheme in game adjustments too and that only comes from really really good coaching because Clemson can line up against Wake Forest and win this year they can do it to to a number of teams that they'll play Stanford most likely appalachin State Citadel pit I've talked about this but when you get into a game against someone like the team we're playing let's take georg's name out of it when you play against a team who's lost one game in like 30 two consecutive national championships and they recruit outrageous and their head coach seems to be just as hungry as he was two years ago when when he won a national championship folks uh that's a dangerous team you have to bring your best you can't go out there figuring stuff out this is the difference between truly the best coach coaches in in football and then guys who were just good so I'm hoping for Garrett Riley that he is going to have a game plan like we've never seen and because if he doesn't Georgia beats Clemson by two touchdowns plus I've already told you this folks got to have a little hope again hope is not a strategy this is a game of strategy and if it's if it's a game that's completely off of luck and strategy and development means nothing stop paying these coaches so much money hand them a crisp $20 bill a coupon to the local Golden Corral and say have at it but you and
