flooring the vinyl plank is usually the one but it could be anything so it could be engineered hardwood but nine times out of 10 is going to be lvp or luxury vinyl plank or maybe even laminate okay gr flooring had a moment it was 2017 we remember it well it kept on 2019 2020 and then it started to change around 2021 I don't know if it was the little maybe the pandemic got everybody thinking God my home is depressing maybe we need to change it out and maybe we need to choose color that is not gray and lifeless and that is really the problem with gray flooring it has been out I would argue if you've been involved in design or listening to me or watching YouTube or whatever it's kind of been out for a few years it's been out since about 2022 but that hasn't stopped people from still putting it in their home today and I still see it all the time people putting in Gray flooring right now here's the problem with it okay number one it's lifeless it's boring it's not interesting it's blah right and so often the gray flooring kind of works with the rest of the gray Trend because there's a lot of gray that was around in the late 2019 sort of area right there was a lot of gray everywhere and people were looking looking for something a little bit more interesting with a little bit more life and the problem with gray is that it doesn't have any it's just really boring and kind of drab now you know black and white are similar in some ways cuz they're just like drained of all like life but the thing is is you don't usually put black and white flooring down necessarily but gray you absolutely do and you saw it everywhere and it's just really lifeless and boring but in addition to that it's also unnatural right unless you've got some grayed out wood that's like you know some reclaimed wood like you brought in some log from a beach somewhere and you brought it in and you're using that as Decor or whatever most of the time for most wood it doesn't naturally lean gray right it naturally leans warm that's the thing with wood it usually has orange undertones yellow undertones red undertones and that's great it is typically leans on the warmer side now some of it can be cooler like I said but that's less often what you see as opposed to the warmer toned Woods which are more common oak Walnut uh mahogany Cherry right Cedar all these Woods typically lean a little bit more on the warmer side so gray reads really unnatural and therefore also isn't really great and it just kind of locks your space into a very particular look it locks it into sort of that kind of gray depressing thing that I talked about before it's really difficult often times when you pick that gray flooring to sort of warm it up and give life to it often times it sort of it has a it really is difficult to sort of work in some of those warmer tones I mentioned like oak and walnut and Cherry and all those different things when you've got this sort of pale gray flooring sitting on the floor so so if you chose it don't listen to me your place is gorgeous I will if I walked into your home because I'm very good at walking into people's homes and saying I love everything that's what I do and I save as you all know my criticism anonymously here on the internet that's what I do this is you get the real me but when it comes to your home I tell you everything's gorgeous but if you did do a renovation and you had the great flooring good for you I hope you love it and if you don't love it then I I don't I'm sorry I don't want to tell you rugs rugs is your answer that's that's that's going to have to be what you're working with there but if you are choosing a renov if you are going through renovation and you're out there and you have an opportunity to change out that flooring choose something warmer choose something like a nice Oak choose something that is fairly light that's fairly neutral and ideally dare I say call me crazy actually the color of real wood what a concept okay next up on my list is going Open Shelving to be open shelving instead of kitchen cabinet specifically the kitchen uppers so this feels like I mean I've been spearheading the case against too much open shelving for a number of years now I think I am quite on record I will say this I don't hate open shelving okay and I just think open shelving is for displaying items you really enjoy not for storage that's my personal opinion no one needs to see your sippy cups up there no one needs to see your ugly you know neon pink plastic dishes that your three-year-old uses no one needs to see that on your open shelding that is for behind closed doors where you can put your Minnie Mouse mug that you bought unfortunately at Disneyland do you know what I mean like throw that stuff in the cupboard throw that stuff in the cupboard you don't know one need to see it it's not there for display unless it brings you Joy in which case good for you but you don't really need to put it on your open shelving open shelving is meant for displaying that's what it's there for it's a shelf there to do display your item so if you got gorgeous stuff from Fable like I do then go ahead and display it but even then I store my fable do you know what I mean like there is something to be said for function and functionally having space to put away some of those items that are maybe not so super attractive and cover them with the magical thing called a door that therefore prevents people from seeing them so you can just open the door when you need it and close the door when you don't what a concept the open shelving everywhere was such a massive Trend and so all over the place and what bothered me is people would have these gigantic kitchens but then not have the actual need to be able to function the actual things that they needed to to use them for they didn't have the space to do storage and that drove me crazy cuz you're like you have this giant kitchen and yet it's not functional that's not great or you have to get an even bigger kitchen to have enough space to put all your lower cabinets to fit all your crap which is like you know what if you had just a reasonably sized with uppers and lowers that have enough space for your actual functional needs in your home and then if you want to put a little bit open shelving in great but it was such a trend in you know a few years back and it's still arguably here where people insist on taking out their uppers and putting open shelving everywhere and I think that's a massive mistake I've gone on record before I think it will look very very dated I think arguably it does right now just like gray flooring but I think in a few years people will come to their sense eventually these Trends will work through because again they always start in the luxury category where people you know have giant homes and therefore they have tons of lower Cabinetry and therefore also have gorgeous things to display cuz they don't actually use their kitchen cuz they don't cook in them cuz they all have personal chefs and then slowly it moves into the middle class and it sort of kind of like moves in through the it moves moves through society and I think now it's sort of on its way out and I think if you put in your home now I think it will look dated in the future if you just did it great honestly it's easier to put upper cabinets in now than it is to maybe change out your flooring but this is the thing this is this video this isn't about swapping out you know a table lamp this is about this is finishes Okay so so you know choose them carefully I think is is the end lesson of this video okay next up on my list is Fake Brass going to be fake brass I'm guilty of this one I'm guilty of this one listen Okay I love brass I love it as a material I find it really warm I find it it suits my style okay I just really like brass it's just a material I really enjoy I don't always really like Chrome very much I really don't like brush nickel as much but I just like brass okay fine but here's the thing brass lovers if you're like me it doesn't have to be the fake stuff you know like if it peels if it's like incredibly yellow if it's very very gold and it's obviously fake that stuff if you're using that in your home especially in some fixed elements it will look incredibly fake so yes if you're going to go for unlacquered brass something that's going to Patina in time something that's actually real like a real brass that in my opinion is timeless just like a lot of the metals are Timeless I mean except for rose gold Mayes she rest in peace but the other ones I think you know what like those ones are pretty Timeless Chrome fine you know there you know yes orb might o oil oil rubbed bronze sorry might look a little bit dated depending on who you go but if it's in your style it's great if you have an industrial style or a farmhous style you know it can work there too right like all these finishes I think can make sense even if they go in and out of trend but the fake stuff the fake brass the stuff that's just that incredibly yellow and gold in my opinion will look dated arguably still does right so if you got into like the 2019 West Elm everything fake brassy I hear you I get it or even Ikeas Ikeas isn't even pretending to try to be brass at this point it's just completely looks like it's been spray painted on with a can of PT you know what I think it's going to look dated now and I think it's going to look dated in the future the lesson here which is kind of the lesson of the Grave flooring as well is choose real stuff choose real stuff right stuff that actually is authentically and honest for what it is as opposed to fake it yes it's cheaper yes it looks good in the short run but it will eventually wear through and it'll eventually chip and it'll just look crappy in the future so real brass only the really really yellowy stuff the fake stuff and this is true for Decor as well as your fixed elements no go okay next up is to be all All White With Black Finishes white everything with black Hardware in contrast okay so this is a bit more of a personal preference I don't know and I feel like this was very very popular but the problem is with this one because you see this all the time right you see the white Subway child with the black grow you see the all white bathroom but then all the matte black fixtures right or you see the all white kitchen with the black fixtures the black Hardware the black uh faucet you maybe got the black appliances or whatever you've got going on there right but everything in all white with the black as an accent this was very popular I think especially with The Farmhouse era we're going to call it the The Farmhouse era where you know people were obsessed with turning their homes into Farms because of Joanna Gaines that's essentially what it was that era is definitely over so if you are doing the all-white everything with black Hardware it's starting to look really dated by starting to I mean it did in 2022 now it's officially definitely gone but here's the thing if you're people are still doing it now and I'm just saying my preference because this is such a high contrast look it reads as really really busy contrast needs to be treated with care a contrast is a wonderful thing right it's really great at showing you know drawing your attention in it makes things really interesting you know when you put one material next to another it's really really interesting one color next to another it's really interesting but when it's white Subway tub with black grout it's not really interesting that's kind of the problem with this one you know cuz if you do too much contrast everything is too too busy it immediately just draws your eye and your eye doesn't really know where to rest because there's just too much contrast happening all over the space so pick your moments with your contrast you know if you still want matte black go for it it I would just maybe consider not doing an all-white everything look if you love an all-white everything look maybe choose something a little bit more subtle like brush nickel or maybe even Chrome might that might be a little bit more subtle against white as opposed to something so Stark as using matte black matte black was very very trendy is it still you tell me I mean well I guess I tell you cuz it's my YouTube channel listen it's not as trendy maybe as it once was I don't think black again you know me in the middle Trends I'm like kind of a little bit over them all but black was very very trendy and it was especially in this contrasting black and white look that was particularly popular and I think its moment has passed it definitely has okay and then finally my Fake Marble fifth finish is going to have to be fake marble everything listen marble is beautiful and I will go on record even though I know some people will say that Granite is like incredibly dated but there's some beautiful granates out there you guys I've seen some gorgeous kitchens that are using Granite again because it's natural because it always looks good because as I said and I I believe I did a video years ago about Timeless design where I talked about how have you ever walked into a forest and looked around and God God this place is looking really dated like no you haven't because a forest is timeless a forest nature is timeless it never looks bad you know what I mean no one's ever walked into Lake Louise and been like it's looking a little 2017 no one's thought that because Lake Louise is gorgeous it just is one of those things Nature's always beautiful so carrying through with that onto natural materials yes how we use them in their application sometimes can look really dated I.E granite in a Tuscan Kitchen but if you use granite in interesting ways it can be super gorgeous again same goes for marble marble has been incredibly trendy for a while those big bold graphic Marbles and I love them all I know some people hate them maybe not all of them sometimes panda marbl is a little overwhelming but like for the most part they're great they're beautiful you know you don't have to necessarily like them all to appreciate their beauty even if you don't want to put them in your home all these different natural materials are gorgeous let's get to the fake ones sometimes I think that the incredibly fake materials that are there to try to emulate the look of natural materials kind of like the gray flooring is sometimes really where we go wrong it's always where we go wrong and I think this is what's happening with the fake marble so countertops you know what if you're doing some fake marble countertops or whatever then you know I would just sort of hesitate a little bit now some of the quartz countertops cuz quartz is a madade material I will admit do a good job of emulating marble some of the higher quality ones can work you have to use your own judgment there in order for it to make sense for you some of them you might be better off if you're going to go to gu quartz embrace quarts just go with quarts it doesn't necessarily have to completely emulate some sort of Kolkata Viola or something like that right there are some really good fakes that are out there but there's a lot that are bad and I think here the quality of the fake does make a big difference in my opinion so this is the one area I will personally say like some might make sense you just have to use your own judgment on if you think that it's real if something is incredibly fake looking and just you know we're talking the fake contact paper stuff then I would personally avoid it and if you're in doubt or you can't afford to get the real thing like a slab of marble and you're not get book match marble on your 10ft Island cuz that's expensive or you can't even do the the quartz on a thing cuz that's also incredibly expensive if your budget is laminate embrace the laminate do you know what I mean like go get some beautiful like white or black or whatever countertops you're choosing that you're loving whatever get that that's in your budget if you can afford butcher block and you want to use Butcher Block then use Butcher Block right but the stuff I think where you're you have a uh what is it like champagne taste and a beer budget like if you can afford the beer get a beer do you know what I mean you don't necessarily have to fake the champagne you can just get the thing that you can afford and embrace it and be proud of it because you worked hard for your money you worked hard for that renovation you know what you're doing and I would just really cling to those authentic materials no matter what your sort of your budget is so that's it for me for today guys I hope really enjoyed this video if you liked that video maybe you'll like this one too so go check that one out and I will see you all in the next video thanks bye
