recapping week one in the Big 10 college football is back and we're back on the big mountain well we finally got here Steve week one what an awesome week end it was uh still ongoing we've got while we're recording this one more game to go and that's the FSU game uh but if you're new to the channel I am JY and this is my good friend Steve Steve wants to do a summary of all the Big 10 games maybe some things that he learned some things that he a lot of things that he got right for those that saw our pick episode you know Steve crushed week one here and he has I have given him as much gloating as he wants he is allowed to do so let's get into the Big 10 here Steve um lots of great games lots of things going the way you said they would go so where do we want to start I well first of all I watched so much football this weekend it was fantastic uh absolutely love it I love the fact that college football is back uh it was Full Steam I we had 18 games in the Big 10 this week uh plus I picked one extra bonus game uh the Florida State game that you mentioned it's going to happen tonight as we record um so I will so you gave me the opportunity to gloat so I'm going to gloat a little bit absolutely I picked 18 Big 10 games I went 15 and three on my big 10 picks just overall in the Big 10 and including three and0 on the locks so we always tell our viewers that's really what you want to focus on if you're looking at those making bets f focus on those locks so I hope you made some money I hope you you you you uh went heavy on those locks CU we went three and0 it was awesome and those were Penn State Iowa and Indiana uh all of those locks hitting which was awesome but just a great week overall excuse me in the Big 10 lots of awesome games so I'm ready to get right into it oh yeah okay so the first game uh Thursday night uh Howard at Ruckers you know I've been high on Ruckers this year I think the the their over under win total was six and a half and and I locked to the over I still feel great about that they were a big favorite in this game yeah and they did I saw everything from Ruckers that I wanted to see uh manungi went went crazy rushing the ball and you You' think he' be able to do that against Howard so uh their defense I thought looked good cak Manis the Greek rifle uh he was he he did exactly what they need him to do and here's here's the thing a lot of people you know they think oh you know in Minnesota he was supposed to be that guy that could you know when when they're at and 20 he could pick up 20 yards with his arm and that's why they call him the Greek rifle well in this offense in this Rucker offense he's asked to do something completely different he's they're mixing the run the Run game and the pass game and he was very efficient just getting uh you know six yards here seven yards there just just Distributing the ball not really asking to push the ball down the field that much uh he ended up with three uh passing touchdowns just a good solid day for him and I saw everything that I want to see he he's he's facilitating this offense so still feel great about Ruckers um this year I think they're going to be one of the surprised teams in the Big 10 because I think they've improved yeah and I think they have an easy schedule which we've talked about quite a bit and they covered at the very very end I remember I think you switched to another game yeah and then I texted you and covered and you went what are you talking about and it was like 10 seconds left and they they stopped them on fourth down then they ended up running it in and scoring scoring a touchdown there at the very end so they got the cover by the Skin of Their Teeth but they got it yeah they were they were 20 it was a big line 26 and a half points uh you know they controlled the game at all the time all the time I think I think maybe Howard maybe got some points like they were covered but then not covered right but what I'll say is Ruckers man Greg shano he kept his foot on the pedal the whole time uh like they were excited to score that last touchdown they want to there was no letup in that game they I really think they came out to to show to to basically give a message to everybody put everybody on notice they're coming out to win games and to Stomp The the football down your throat basically and they did yeah so moving on uh UNC and Minnesota I picked UNC uh plus some points in this game I said I I'm down on Mini this year I think if I remember correctly I had them winning four games this year uh and everything I saw uh Thursday I think it was Thursday night uh is still I'm down on Mini okay I I don't know where they're going to get their offense their defense was okay in the first half um uncc's quarterback Johnson was a little bit rough at different times and then he end up getting knocked out of the game and brought someone else in uh but many I I honestly watching that game I can't find any positives about that team about that game uh they lost the UNCC straight up they had a chance at the very end to kick a game-winning field goal missed the field goal um and but they set off the celebratory fireworks anyways so it's just I I think it's going to be a lot of bumps and bruises mostly just for a talent reason like I think PJ Fleck is a decent coach I really haven't dropped my opinion of him there is a little bit of a smoke and mirrors thing with him and normally in the past it was okay you can he can get some guys in there and they can win some games whatever but man in this in this you know modern version of the Big 10 where we just brought in four teams from the West Coast that all you know have talent uh Minnie to me has dropping further back and I I didn't see anything about them that would make me think they're going to win more than about four games this year from a kicker that they had I he he missed multiple attempts he hit the upright uh from a Chip Shot earlier in the game then he missed that field goal at the end of the game and this was a kicker that had Stellar numbers coming into the game and uh just had an off night for him um and yeah I I watched some of that game I was kind of clicking back and forth between games but I did watch some of that game as well yeah many just they're they're riding a Struggle Bus yeah yeah okay so my next game Illinois or it was Eastern Illinois at Illinois it was a big spread I picked Illinois to cover the spread again they did everything that that I wanted to see from them they easily covered the spread I think they won you 45 to nothing against you know Eastern Illinois not a good team but you know we've seen other teams this weekend uh you know power four teams or whatever struggle and maybe not do as well while Illinois did very well run ran the ball played good defense and Alm we talked about altm he had a horrible game last year against Penn State but after that game he had a good string of games and then he got hurt late in the season I think is going to be a a positive for for them he had four touchdown passes nothing to sneeze at even though it's a lower opponent um so I was if I'm an Illinois fan again I I don't think I'm I'm I'm at that level where I think we're going to compete for a big 10 Championship yeah but I'm happy with what I saw uh and I'm happy for you know the the opportunity I I think they're set up nice to have a winning season get to a bowl game and everything I saw matched that confirms your thoughts exactly good so now we're kind of flip-flopping so Michigan State here okay you know I said I thought that Michigan state would have some difficulties early uh in the season you know and this coach I I think he'll he'll do fine there I think he was a good hire and they brought over and and now is the name is escaping me uh is it aen Charles he looked good at times and I think he'll be a good quarterback in the Big 10 but they're still trying to figure out everything they have this new roster they brought in transfer players and what was left over from just a bad team last year so I said Michigan state would struggle this year I picked uh Florida Atlantic um plus the points and what was the ending score here um it was fairly close yeah Michigan state did win the game 16 to10 uh so Florida Atlantic covered um but I mean honestly these teams looked pretty even you would think a big 10 team would be able to have their way with a school like Florida Atlantic so you know I won my pick on there but more of the focus is I think it's going to take some time for Michigan State again maybe we see next year a year from now at this time I do think aen Charles will be a good quarterback and I think the coaching staff will get it together yeah but for this year I think they're just going to kind of continue to struggle at least in this first half of the season for sure yep okay um so moving on Maryland and Yukon it was it was a pretty big point spread uh but maybe not as big as you and I thought it would be right uh Maryland was 20 point 20 point favorites and I picked them to easily cover and they did Yukon is just such a bad team um I don't know that we know a lot about Maryland at this point when they play these crappy teams they're probably they're just they're they're a probably maybe maybe at that maybe just above the bottom third of the Big 10 or right at that line so when they play these crappy teams they're they're going to win but we don't know a lot about Maryland yet but they did they did what they needed to do and and covered that game um and the only thing that we know coming out of here is what we already knew which was Yukon as a bad team right okay so the next game we have here is Penn State at West Virginia this was a game this was our first lock and everybody knows I'm a Penn State fan um so Penn State easily covered they were the better team um but I want to talk more about what we what we know coming out of this game or what were the questions before what kind of we did we get answered the new offensive coordinator for Penn State Andy koncki he came in he brought that system over from Kansas right um and the that whole system is predicated on let's put let's use a lot of shifts a lot of motion try and confuse the defense put them in a position where they have to choose to to go one way or the other and then the quarterback makes that read based on how the defenses choose and Bam his job is to get the ball out quick and quick and early to his Playmakers and Drew Aller did that yesterday he didn't have a perfect game but boy you know we want to see big plays you saw big plays where they're pushing the ball down the field totally different than last year Nick Singleton I think had two rushes for over 40 yards uh which he had none last year his freshman year he had seven rushes for over 40 yards so we saw big big gains in the running game big pass plays Drew Aller uh hitting some dimes pushing the ball down the field I loved how the the the offense looked and the defense what I said is I think the defense will be just as good as last year maybe a little better maybe not have as much as many turnovers Manny Diaz was really aggressive in in turnovers Tom Allen is more of a let's play it safe and let's just smother them uh and that's what they did to West Virginia West there was no point in that game where West Virginia really was competing or that you thought West Virginia could win that game and after there was a lot of talk from the West Virginia team from their fan base from their local media on the national media um there was a lot of talk and West Virginia did not back it up at all Penn State did everything that they wanted to do now last year Penn State kind of whooped up on West Virginia at home right this was a little different going on the road but so I don't want to I don't want to get too crazy and too excited but what the things that we wanted to see more d dnamic offense pushing the ball down the field more big plays all of that we saw from Penn State this weekend which I think was was a really good sign well two things I'll just add and then we'll move on first I was a little surprised because I was listening to that WVU hype so I was a little surprised you locked this game uh and I mentioned that on our pick episode but my goodness uh just crushing that I mean that wasn't wasn't I'll tell you when you watch the first quarter you're going unless something crazy happens here and somehow WVU can just turn a switch that we don't realize they have this is an easy win and it was uh I hate to say easy but an easy win in terms of a bet is what I meant to say um and I will also say the the um you know you mentioned uh using this offense and being different and to me it's more about getting the ball to your Playmakers it was almost like they didn't want to do that last year you know get the ball to Singleton so he can make the guy Miss get just get him out into some open space you don't need to get it 20 yards down the field get it eight yards down the field and he'll get you another 2 cuz he's so freaking good and he's not the only one but you know it's more about just getting the ball out quicker uh to The Playmakers so they can be Playmakers um and and just putting them into into uh you know really good situations and I will say the throw I was at the last touchdown or second to last touchdown beautiful throw by Aller kind of off to the side back end zone back shoulder throw tight coverage really good coverage from WVU the guy didn't get his head around but I mean that good coverage and put the right where he needed to and that's what you want to see from all so yeah if I'm a Penn State fan again you don't want to get too high but you saw to your point the things you you wanted to see out of this team so yeah I'll I'll tell you you and I talked off camera before we started there's a lot of things about this team and this offense that reminds me of that 2016 team with Joe Morehead as the offensive coordinator and again that was all about putting the confusing the defense putting them in positions where they have to pick uh basically pick their own poison and once you let them Pi your poison then you get the the hands of the playmaker let them let do what they do um and so we'll see we'll see if that continues so that was my first lock win so one and0 in the locks after that uh so moving forward the next game uh Illinois State at Iowa this was another lock of mine Iowa was 22 and a half Point favorites um some people question could everybody knew Iowa was going to win this game but K they actually score more than 22 points um so it the first half honestly it was looking a little rough yes it was I was like they're not going to cover this freaking spread yeah it took a little little while Kate mcam was out most of the year last year new offensive coordinator for them too um but they ended up just basically steamrolling um the the the final score was 40 to nothing second half they just they they took over they were the better team and honestly I saw especially in the second half I saw a lot of things I think I was watching the second half while uh Penn State West Virginia was in the three-hour rain delay lightning delay and really I saw everything that I wanted to see out of Iowa they're their their offense they're not going to be at that level of Penn State or like a USC or Ohio State or Oregon on offense but they don't need to be they play good solid defense good special teams they just needed marginal improvement over last year's offense and I think we've seen everything that we need to see to show they they can at least improve a little bit yes you know are they going to score 30 points a game no it's not going to happen in the Big 10 um but I think we see some improvement there do they have a bet this year like they had last year no no 35 was it 35 points or 30 point average or something I think they only had to average like 24 last year 25 and they weren't even close to that not even close all right well they started off pretty good with 40 points on this one this week yeah yeah so which I think last year they started like well below they did they they started they started they dug themselves a hole and they only made it bigger as a season went on so yeah all right okay so moving on to the next game Indiana State at Purdue now I picked Indiana State I picked Purdue to cover 33 and a half mostly because Indiana State's just a bad team now I have been low on Purdue this year yeah we've had some Purdue fans in the comments that said hey I think you're a little too low on Purdue and I do think they will I I still think they will struggle I did see some things Hudson card yesterday really really efficient really really good he had a i at one point I think he was 21 out of 22 passing or something now again against a bad Indiana State team but I saw some things out of Purdue that may lead me to believe maybe they're a little better than I thought they were okay so I want to continue to see that um before I change my take on them but they easily covered 33 and a half points uh and their offense to me uh looked a little better than I expected and again Hudson card very good good okay yeah okay Akon at Ohio State I end up taking plus the points plus 48 and a half actually I just I I skipped one here um okay let's go back there's one I really want to talk about Florida International at Indiana Indi that was my third lock here um so we talked a lot about Kurt cetti coming in uh well first of all I took IND as my third lock I took Indiana to cover 21 and a half points um we talked about Kurt cetti coming in him bringing in roor uh from Ohio from the Bobcats and he brought in some players from James Madison hon honestly the the way it's I think it's fair to describe this as almost bringing in a G5 Allstar team dropping them in the Big 10 and see how they can compete I love it yeah I love it too and and Kurt cetti I think he's a little bit of a Mad genius honestly um and the media already loves him he had some he had some weird quotes non quotes or whatever when they were asking him things making weird faces on the sideline he's already going to setting himself up to be on a bunch of memes and the media is going to love him like the grumpy old Professor nutty old Professor or something I don't know um but I really liked what I saw from this offense that everything I wanted to see I saw RoR was efficient they just did things well and just a well coached team there was a couple little things at the end where they're trying to run out the clock and cetti was getting a little frustrated but uh I I heard on I think it was the cover three podcast I think Bud Elliot mentioned that at one point in the offseason the over under wi total was two and a half for this team man I I can't remember exactly where I took them uh for the season I I think maybe over four and a half I think that sounds right four and a half but I I I like them to win you know probably eight games this year I saw everything that I needed to see they easily they well they covered the lock they they uh covered the 21 and a half points so we won that lock y um and I I just I loved everything that I saw from them they have an easy schedule and I I'm I'm thinking big things you know I could see them winning eight games this year I I think I think they're an exciting team to watch so with that Steve let me jump in real quick you just hit the last three of the four games that you talked about were all locks three and0 uh just to remind people if if you know you're hearing us for the first time we do live pick episodes Wednesday evenings 8:30 Eastern that's when you can get Steve's locks on the Big 10 um and as he said he killed week one he's looking to to kill week two we'll see what happens but Wednesday evenings at 8:30 Eastern is when we have our live pick episode so make sure you stick that on your calendar so are we going to Ohio State next where we going next yeah so I I did want to go back and I want I want to go back and touch one game that we kind of glossed over okay it was a loss um I want to talk about Wisconsin a little bit so Michigan State or no Western Michigan at Wisconsin I thought Wisconsin would cover that 23 and a half they didn't they struggled uh I'm not going to talk a lot about this team other than saying I said that I thought they'd be an improved team but maybe not have a better record but the caveat on that that I placed was Tyler van djk the transfer incoming from Miami I said he needed to be an improvement over what they had last year so far in the one game I've seen he's not okay uh so I'm I'm thinking Wisconsin is going to continue to struggle that was one of my three losses of the of the week um and so for Wisconsin fans and again honestly I don't really understand it because I I you know uh Luke fickle I think is a good coach I love what he did at Cincinnati he just he hasn't found maybe that magic touch in the portal area era at Wisconsin uh so I I think they're gonna be riding The Struggle Bus this year but I don't have much to say on Wisconsin okay uh so moving forward yes the next game I do want to talk about akan at Ohio State um Ohio state was the big favorite 48 and a half point line and what I said was I said Ohio State if they wanted to could win this game by a 100 sure um but I didn't take the line I didn't take the I end up taking the points aan plus all the points didn't trust Ohio State just because I thought they just wouldn't be fully engaged week one they may let their foot off the gas and and honestly that's that's basically what I saw but but it was kind of the opposite they were actually kind of slow out of the gates um they ended up pushing the score um you know pretty good but not covering the points so that was that was a win for us taking akaran plus the points but Ohio state will Howard was okay but not maybe the if I'm an Ohio State fan I'm saying okay we did what we had to do right however there's a little little inkling of doubt maybe in the in the back of my mind like hey is Will Howard actually the guy we thought was going to come in here and maybe the team just kind of took took akan lightly so I'm not ready to downgrade my expectations I've said I think Ohio state is the best team on paper in the big big 10 they have a pretty easy schedule uh and I expect them to be the Big 10 Champions so I'm not ready to downgrade those expectations but maybe there's a little trickle of Doubt after that first game okay but I was happy to hit the The Pick of akan plus absolutely yeah for sure okay all right next game UTEP at Nebraska uh Nebraska was 27 and 1 Half Point favorites I thought about locking this game I think this might have been one that we talked about it was down around 23 and a half I would have locked it um but Nebraska is just the better team you know the big thing with them they were a good team last year they just had bad quarterback play they bring in Dylan riola and I've said from the beginning I don't care this kid is a rookie freshman this this kid is something special and he is honestly I think by the end of the season he will be probably the top five quarterback in the Big 10 uh he has confidence he did everything that he needed to do yesterday he's not perfect yet he still has room for growth but he did everything that he needed to do UTEP gave a little bit of a fight um but Nebraska uh easily covered that 27 and a half points they're just the better team uh there's a lot of I think maybe National media doubting Nebraska this year I picked them to go over their win total uh and possibly compete for that fourth playoff spot and everything I saw they're on track uh I I like everything that I saw about Nebraska this week that's the game that I watched um and I think Fox kind of crossed over to that uh when the Penn State game was on the the rain delay the storm delay uh so I was watching some of that game and I agree riola looked really good um rule is in command of this team yes um and we've said multiple times we'll say It on the Mountain West uh review as well when you have a quarterback and a coach that are that are they're on the same page and and Link together and again small sample size right now but it certainly looks like that's going to be the case great things can happen on that team so I'm anxious to watch uh Nebraska moving forward yeah in the final score they won 40 to7 so very comfortably covering that line um the next game okay this I got this game wrong okay okay I I picked uh Miami of Ohio visiting Northwestern right I picked Miami plus two and a half and I said they might win all outright uh well they didn't Northwestern won so as you see I'm wearing my Northwestern hat today and you know great win for them this to me was a big you know one of the the top Mac teams versus a team that I picked towards the end of the the bottom half of the Big 10 uh and Northwestern did what they had to do they got a win uh they played in that that new stadium temporary Stadium right on the lake I mean you look at the it looks like it's 10 feet from the edge of the lake oh it is it's right there yeah it's right there and there were reports I think the the the game the temperature was in the like high 60s and there were reports of people were saying like we need a jacket for this game Labor Day weekend because there was just a Cool Wind coming off the lake so I know they're not playing any games there late in this season but even a month from now like we get into you know beginning of October we'll see how you know how that plays out um so they Northwestern they've already uh you know they're already beating my expectations so good for them they got that win uh so I'm representing the wild cats today great job and I'm just I'm going to go back to our pick episode and Steve's a man of his word I said if Northwestern wins this game I need you to wear your Northwestern hat and so you are so thank you for wearing the Northwestern and I'm hopeful Northwestern can continue to uh do well and we yet again Northwestern you and I will convince Steve to maybe start picking Northwestern but I and that's not a knock on you again yeah I'm not one to uh talk bad about somebody that just went 15 and three for crying out loud however I am a Northwestern uh fan and well not fan but I I'm I'm kind of got a hold of them last year when we were doing the pck episode so I just watched them because mainly because uh I want you to wear that hat that's perfect okay I'm all purpled out today Northwestern won 13 to6 so it wasn't necessarily like a convincing stomping win but they got the win which is but it's a good team the redw te is good team solid G5 team yep okay so moving forward to the next game this is one that I think you and I disagreed on UCLA at Hawaii y uh I picked Hawaii plus 14 and half um and and the two reasons why one when you travel to Hawaii just weird stuff happens sometimes and two I you know I said I think it going to take UCLA some time they have a brand new head coach they were they they had a rough time last year the strength of their of their team the last two years was their defense well Danton Lynn left there and went to USC we're going to talk about that game later y uh so to me they lost their best coach uh they lost some of their best defensive players and it's just going to take a while um so the final score ended up being UCLA won 16 to3 but Hawaii gave them everything that they could handle um it was back and forth at the very end I mean Hawaii had a chance to win this game on the final drive um so UCLA squeaks out of there but Hawaii was the winner plus 14 and a half um very very close game and honestly almost exactly what I expected I was surprised because I didn't think uh Hawaii would be able to keep it lows scoring uh I was really down on Hawaii uh from their first game against Delaware State and I I just I just went off of that yeah I think pre without having that game I probably would have been with you and taken the two touchdowns with Hawaii but man I hated what I saw in that first game from Hawaii this is a win for Hawaii I mean a three-point loss to UCLA absolutely nothing to sneeze at there and the chance to win the game I'm very happy you know you always want to win the game don't get me wrong you know rainbows I know you wanted to win the Warriors you wanted to win that win that game but a three-point loss to a very solid Big 10 team uh I'm I'll take that as a a Big W for the the mountain Western we'll talk about that game on the Mountain West preview or I'm sorry summary video uh as well so so the next game is another Mountain West yes uh and Big 10 Clash so we had two of them this one we agreed on yes uh this game both of us we thought Fresno would give Michigan everything they could handle and then most likely Michigan just they got they have more Talent more the guys up front on both sides of the line line uh you know the defense all that kind of stuff they probably would just you know use that and win out towards the end right that's what we predicted we got a lot of hate in the comments on two different videos from all these Michigan fans who the Michigan fans all they had to say was no that's stupid go Blue okay well great analysis but we were spoton on our analysis of this game um Fresno State stayed in it gave Michigan all they could handle I thought Mikey Keane did a good job did uh most of game he throws that pick six late uh to an allamerican will Johnson the the the cornerback he the guy jumped the route he was expecting it they were down Fresno was down 13 was driving I mean they were Michigan was starting to lose their composure they're driving looks like maybe they could go down and score a touchdown get it back to six points and they you know they throw the pick six you that that's and and that's the thing you have a a talented player the caliber of will Johnson one mistake that dude boom six points the other way um it is what it is they're just a little bit better team but if if I'm so I'm I have a few takeaways so I'll just touch on Fresno real quick because you're going to touch on them in the Mountain West episode more but Fresno they have nothing to be ashamed of they came in they looked good they handled their business right nothing to be ashamed of whatsoever if I'm Michigan I still don't know who my quarterback is okay right um the starter did okay they brought in orgy they were just okay they were good enough to to beat a Mountain West team at home uh at their own place um but you know if I'm Michigan I'm thinking who is my starting quarterback do I have a starting quarterback that's going to be playoff caliber yeah uh and and I'm worried you know about this season and playing in the Big 10 um they did not dominate at all there's no way you could watch this game and say they dominated uh I think all the things that we brought up losing their entire offensive line losing their most of their offensive coaching staff they look sluggish they started slow and yes they defense is still good they have a great dline they you know they have Johnson on there on the corner whenever he was they were rotating a lot and whenever he was in the game you could it was dramatic he was all over the field in pass coverage and and and coming down into the box where wherever he wanted to go he was making plays yeah but they have some things to be worried about they're going to be hosting Texas soon they're going to be playing um uh Oregon and then at the end of the season they have that match up with Ohio State and they better get their act together between now and then if they want want to beat them again yeah I mean 16 to 10 in the fourth quarter this game was so you know if you're Fresno we'll talk about them again on that that episode but um they kind of put the put it on Mikey King shoulders and he did just fine uh you know beating the spread staying in the game until the until the very end you know that pick six was unfortunate but um yeah I was was a good game for Fresno and um you know as you said Michigan we're not sure who the starting quarterback is that's not a place you want to be so all right where are we going so the next game is Idaho at Oregon I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this this was my third loss of the season the line was 44 and a half and both of us expected Oregon just to come out against NCS team and put the pedal to the medal score 70 80 points whatever they wanted to score sure um they were missing a ton of players on the offensive line some other players um uh Dylan Gabriel he he had a good game but it was all Dink and dunk like they didn't take they didn't go for any shots they didn't they weren't going for any big plays they didn't really need to um but I think he was sacked a few times they just their offense looked out of sync um I mean when you have a bunch of o line starters out you know you would expect something like this but again Idaho not you know known to be really a threatening team yeah Middle Middle Road FCS they're not a top FCS team not a bad FCS team but middle of the road FCS team so if I'm Oregon my biggest concern if I'm an Oregon fan right now and just if you're a big 10 fan is how quickly can Oregon get these guys back are they you know if they were playing let's say they played Michigan week one would these guys have played or is this going to be a thing where they're out a while and honestly I had no idea these guys were going to be out and I think they're trying to keep things hush and hush so we don't know you know how long these players will be out if if they miss significant time you know Oregon could have a bumpy road to start the season which is a really big season lots of high expectations so uh a little bit just little bit of uh doubts creeping in there um but that could all be turned around they get these guys back healthy and and you know put the pedal to the metal they might be back at the the top of the Big 10 expectations yeah for now I'm chalking that one up as a me you got the dub yeah move on exactly so Washington they were 25 and a half or 26 and a half Point favorites they covered over Weber State there's not really much to say from this we don't know anything from this other than Washington is a FBS Big 10 team and Weber State definitely is not that's all we really need to know they covered great okay um so we to be continued on Washington for this year and then the game I want to get to to me the game of the week last night LSU at USC well technically at USC but it was in Vegas right fantastic game kind of started out as a um maybe you could call it a defensive struggle because it was lowc scoring but it was more of like a Bend don't break at the beginning where both teams were driving but then they were having trouble in the Red Zone defenses were coming up with big stops we talked about I said the key this year I I expected USC to do well this year and one of the biggest reasons is bringing over Danton Lynn uh defensive coordinator UCLA's defense was really good the last couple years he was a big reason why they bring him over and I'm not ready to say USC has a top 10 defense because it's not right but it's probably not bottom 10 in all power conference like it was the last couple years so definitely improved more they're just a more physical defense they look like they knew what they were doing last year like they did sometimes the players didn't even know like where they were supposed to be lined up they weren't making any plays whatsoever this year uh now um nus me for the LSU quarterback he was having his way with them he was picking them apart pass but whenever they would get down the field they get in that red zone they would buckle up and Buckle in strap in whatever and and most of the time they were stopping LSU so I if you're a USC fan you love what you saw from the the defense and then on the off offensive side Miller Moss was I thought was fantastic he might be making a case right now as the best quarterback in the Big 10 we saw last year in the bll game he was the MVP of the bll game he was fantastic I think he threw six touchdown passes and our big question was can he carry that over into the regular season into Big 10 play so Lincoln Riley he's been known as the quarterback Whisperer for so long I think that's going to continue with Miller Moss the big question is was this a fluke against the the defense was it a fluke against the LSU uh offense uh or can they continue just even that level of improvement into Big 10 play um but I I picked USC plus four and a half I said it was a a coin flip game and really that's what it ended up being you know it could have gone to overtime y um USC I I was impressed with them they they could have just marched down the field ran out the clock and kicked a field goal they wanted to leave no doubt punched it into the end zone with eight seconds I think eight seconds to go uh they didn't want to leave it in the hands of kicker missing a kick or anything like that and they were physical they they just went right down the field methodically and punched it in the end zone uh and won the game straight up so that was my 15th win of the weekend which I was really happy about and again if I'm a USC fan I'm really happy about everything I saw well I'll eat some Crow because you know I have uh I didn't pick the game but I I've given some hate to USC I'm not a big USC guy they've deserved it but I will tell you and I texted you towards the end of the game does USC actually have a defense like they were an impressive they were impressive for a USC defense a much improved USC defense um and everything that you just said there is correct and I will I mean LSU was able to move the ball but it was you know kind of a Bend don't break I mean when USC had to buckle down like you said and get that big play get that big stop the defense was able to do it now we'll see if they can continue to do that over the next 11 games but they did it in this game and I I mean they they they opened my eyes they will say that um defensively especially and it was a great game it was a really really fun game to watch you made some good points before we went on camera I want to give you a chance to maybe make those points again about coaching Danton Lynn do do you remember do you want to do you well I just you know we were talking about there's there's everybody gets focused on these transfers and these players and things and we've talked about coaching you know before and and you really follow coaching um and that is the I mean if you want to know where a team's going to be at moving into the year if they had a coaching change uh you know coordinator change or something like that and that coach has a pedigree of creating a good defense or a good offense you know and I'll look at USC and PSU again it's just single uh games that we're talking about here so we'll see how that plays out but my goodness the change with uh Penn State and the change with USC and yes some players changed but to get that type of change that comes from coaching coordinating that does come from one or two players that you picked up in the transfer portal because they're so dag on Amazing yes that can help but that is not how you're going to get that massive switch so I give a lot of shout outs to these coaches uh and these coordinators uh when you see that type of a turnaround potentially that's where it's coming from in my opinion so and a lot of people yeah people will say it but they love to talk about The Playmakers it's easy to talk about that I get it but you get the the scheming and all of that from the coaching totally agree with you and and so I'll say and just kind of close this segment up look what we've seen in the Big 10 the last couple years uh shano has come into Ruckers turn that program around and I've had no love for Ruckers over the past you know that but he's turned that program around you can't argue it Matt rule in Nebraska uh it certainly looks like he's on track to do and he's done this before he has the track record it looks like he's doing that yep um this year Signet in Indiana we'll see it's going to be a long season but I think we already are seeing the the the kind of the Hallmarks of what he's done other places and if he can I mean imagine if he gets Indiana to like an eight- win season this year which is definitely doable I think and they were at one point in the off season like we mentioned pick to win they're over under with two and a half games uh and then coordinators Penn State what we've seen with Andy codal Nikki with one game small sample size and USC Danton Lynn again one game small sample size but I I agree with you we're in the portal area era everybody focuses on that but if you can nail it I mean look at Penn State back in 2016 they brought Joe a Morhead in and had maybe the best 2-year run in 2016 and 17 of any Penn State team in the Franklin era yeah um so coaching is so important that's big that that's my thoughts on the Big 10 uh after week one so I'll glow one more time 15 and three on my picks this year three and0 on our
