Kathryn Hahn Talks Working with Patti LuPone and Aubrey Plaza in Agatha All Along

-Welcome back! We're here with Kathryn Hahn. I know your kids are teenagers, so it's probably very hard to impress them and make you think you're cool. But you were in the "Spider-Verse" movies when -- I guess the first one came out when they were a little bit younger. -Yeah. -Did they care about this? -This was pretty cool. Yeah, they -- Especially 'cause I was, like, a woman Doc Ock which also was really cool. Yeah, the whole -- This got a lot of points in my house. Also, that movie is so rad. -It's so rad. -Yeah. -They're all so rad. -Yeah. They're amazing. -Although the last one I went to, which is, you know, it's like a two-parter... and I think there's some people in the audience didn't know, and when the, uh, when the movie ended -- and I was there with my kids, you know, but, like, they were like five and seven at the time, and it said like, well, you know, "Part two coming." And the woman sitting behind us goes, "[Bleep] kidding me?!" [ Laughter ] And I was like, "That's not okay." It's not okay. Um, so, uh, this is so -- So Agatha Harkness, I mean, this was a Marvel character, but we meet you as Agatha in "WandaVision," and it's so thrilling that it's its own show now. And what a cast! -Oh! -What a cast! -It is a murderer's row. It really is. Each one is like more -- And they're all just so distinct and incredible, personality-wise and character-wise. -And Aubrey Plaza, who you've worked with before... [ Cheers and applause ] But, you know, I'm a -- I'm a friend of Aubrey's. I love Aubrey. But Patti LuPone... legend. [ Cheers and applause ] -I mean, that is what one would call a real broad. -She's a real broad. -Yeah. -She does not hide her broadness. -No, she just -- She says what she -- Like, there is no, like, hesitation. She'll just say the truth. -Yeah. -I mean, she's the best and also so fun. To sing next to her, though, was... -Yeah. You were like a backup singer for her. -Yes. So she was a backup singer to us certain times. -Oh, boy. -I mean, I just got really loud. I didn't know what else to do. I was like, "Hit the back wall of the theatre!" But, like, we were in a TV show. I just didn't know how to even begin. That voice as soon as she, like, oh, my God. It's just crazy. -I also feel that she is a very warm, very loving person who is also very honest, right, as you established. So I bet if you sing bad in front of her, she's not like, "Great work." -No. -Yeah. -She'll just like be excited that we're all there together. -You'd be like, "How did I sound?" She's like, "It's nice that we're here together." -Yes, yes. -Like, friendship is more -- -What a great coven. -[ Laughs ] We're a great coven of friends. -She also would just drink a full-on, just black coffee and then just be like... Like, with no in between. -Oh, right. You're like, "What's your secret?" -Yes, and she was like, "I don't know the difference between a chorus or a lyric or whatever." Like, she is so still, like, just has a natural... I mean, that is someone touched by something else, like, her voice is bananas. -And some of us, you know, obviously have to work on the craft. -Yes, the craft. Macaroni and cheese. -[ Laughs ] Were you a theatre major at Northwestern? -Yeah. -And then you went to drama school at Yale? -Yes. -So did either of those have -- what were the weirder acting exercises that you're embarrassed about now? -Okay. At Northwestern, we had to pick an animal and then embody that animal. -Yeah, I definitely knew people who were doing their animal work at Northwestern. -Very intense. We spent a lot of time at the zoo, and I was a gibbon. -Yeah. -You know, like... So, uh... -By the way, can you -- I mean, this just speaks to the fact that we were in college before YouTube 'cause, like, no kids are going to the zoo now. -Oh, I know! -If they're doing a gibbon, they're like, "Gibbon." -Yes! 100%. I would take the train into the zoo on like a Saturday and, like, study it. -Do you think the zookeepers, like, noticed kids coming back and being like, "There's a lady who's super into the gibbon"? -Yes! Yes. -Like unhealthy connection. -Like, "Is she gonna buy a baby gibbon on the black market for $60,000?" And, yes, I did. -You did? -Yes. -And it showed on stage. -It really showed. -Yes. So you did gibbon at Northwestern. -Yes, and then when -- At Yale, I remember there was something we all had to lay down on the floor and like shake or something until we all -- until you started crying, and I remember seeing all my classmates sobbing uncontrollable, and I was like... ♪ I feel nothing ♪ [ Laughter ] Like, I was the only one that couldn't cry. I was just like, "Aw, something's wrong with me. I'm not an actor. I shouldn't do this!" Yeah. And then I kind of fake cried... -Yeah. -...just to blend in with the other people 'cause I didn't want to be like... -Yeah. You were like, "How did that gibbon cry?" -Yeah. "Ah!" Exactly. -[ Laughs ] You started crying like a gibbon! [ Laughs ] -Like a gibbon. -Um, what a delight. What a delight to have you here. Congrats on the show.
