Ellen would begin working in film and TV in the late 1980s and '90s starting with a regular appearance on a short-lived Fox sitcom called openhouse which was a spin-off of the show duet on which she played the role of Margo Van Meter in 1992 producers Neil Marlins and Carol black would cast Ellen in their sitcom Lori Hill in the role of nurse Nancy McIntyre the series was cancelled after only four episodes but the same producers would then cast her in their next ABC pilot these friends of mine which they co-created with David S Rosenthal the show would be inspired by Ellen's comedy career and these friends of mine would be renamed Ellen after the first season the show was fairly popular in his first few seasons in part due to Ellen's style of observational humor and it was often referred to by some as the female version of Seinfield
