ball to left field slicing tough play for bregman can he get there yes he does he is doing everything tonight at Tropic of field Alex bregman a great defensive play he also had a home run for a fourth straight game he had a double in a three for four game and he has been on a tear started off the year his first 37 games hitting 2011 the 78 game since hitting 292 with 17 homers and on this road trip where the Astros are seven and one and they wrap it up today in St Pete against the Rays 16 for 37 nine extra base hits after last night's game Alex gregman had this to say about his recent play feel uh feel really good yeah just trying to keep rolling stick to the same things we've been doing pre and post game I feel like um swinging it as good as I ever have in my career so feel good swinging as good as I ever have in my career even better than 2018 when he want was what top five in MVP probably not runner up runner up I don't think he'll ever top 2019 but the way he's playing of late does make you think think to yourself do I want to give him this extension I mean I I mean I know we went like we said it yesterday I said lifetime contract did and then be alive till he's 34 yes I because I when I say that I always think players don't really don't play that long I think that these players who are playing to their 40s are more of I think they're more Rarities You' prefer you'd prefer to send them in a nursing home or put them in a in a meat grinder preferably not but I I would like Alex bregman to be back because I just don't believe that you can continually strike gold forever with prospects like like is Bryce Matthews your opening day third baseman in 2025 how do you say it I I don't hate the idea maybe like maybe he is or maybe he's your shortstop and you know thing Peña moves to third or who knows you could be creative with it but it does feel like they are setting it up for that or Zach zenzo I mean there are some I think try outs that are taking place right now as far as who's going to be a contributor next year and maybe that's why Dana Brown has been sending as many people up from the lower levels to the major league roster yeah it's definitely like you know like like l perfo i mean like Leon wouldn't be a third baseman he's more of a second baseman um you can you can you can find guys if you need to can they be as effective absolutely not does Alex Bergman look like he's slowing down physically uh that's one thing where I think works in his favor where I think that's clearly no I mean he doesn't look any different at third base the arm is still there he's obviously never been the quickest guy in the world but he he's he's healthy he is very productive for a majority of the seasons he just starts very very slow I I get why people would be scared off or why even Jim Crane would be scared off because of what just happened with these two contracts theyve a DFA like like that is well I I don't know what his like financial responsibility reaction to Jose Bru and Rafael Montero and lansom colors is to his own wallet like is he scared to give out contracts after losing so much money on those three guys I'm assuming the answer is no probably different for bregman versus them though yeah right like like Kikuchi probably falls into that category more than bregman yeah kikuchi's closer to the monteros and the Abus cuz you're just getting to know them M and it's buying the engagement ring after a couple of months as opposed to after living with the person since bregman came up to the majors in 16 what what I think is interesting about bregman is like if you look at the way his contract that he first signed was broken down is that this year his payroll salary is $30 million so his aav ends up being 20 million but if you look at at the highest paid third baseman in baseball there's only two guys who make over $30 million aav and that's Manny Machado and Rafel Des aav means ever on an annual basis yes um I guess Nolan arado does too it looks like noan avocado wow um oh and still playing baseball and Anthony rendone the worst contract ever um no I I I like Anthony randone I like his blade and disrespect for baseball he's just like I don't want to be here he said playing baseball so rendone doesn't count doesn't count so there's only a handful of gu there's only six third basement today that on technically the way the contract is broken down that make more money than Alex bregman okay so it's not like you have to even give him this massive pay bump to put him into a different category like you would with Kyle Tucker Kyle Tucker is going to get an extreme pay bump from one year to the next because it's bregman's second contract like you're you can pretty much operate on the same playing field as you've been like it's not going to change you're where you're at with the luxury tax that dramatically so I would prefer Alex bregman to be here I just I think the team's better off with we all would we all would I don't think that's even a debate especially the way he's playing he's going to start off so the season slow he is going to come alive towards the end of the year and you hope that he has a good postseason which some years he has and some years he hasn't but you could also say the same thing for Jose Altuve and you could say probably for the most part with Kyle Tucker it it hasn't been up to Snuff real question is are you willing to make a long-term investment that's actually going to be something bregman's going to sign and I I think bregman's of the opinion they're not even going to bother with it just based off of how they operated with kareah and with Springer and okay who's next up at the ranks that's why we're all a little bit skeptical right now as opposed to saying like hey let him walk I think you're right the odds are against the Astros finding somebody else that's going to step in there immediately but I mean they if they want to keep this going they're going to have to continue to bet on themselves because I I I feel like from a financial perspective just given the way that guys are basically breaking down on a regular basis across baseball not just with the Astros you kind of want to invest all your money in pitching these days yeah because you're just going to need to get a surplus of it you should expect to be losing two to three guys at Tommy John surgery a year it feels like that might be an overstatement but it's not just an Astros problem no it's pretty close I think they just had the 44th guy this season go out for the year with Tommy John so so right now yeah I was like just doing a little math here one and a half Tommy John surgeries per team and and we're not even all the way through the year yeah exactly there's still plenty of time that doesn't count minor leag or think those are just guys who are in The Bigs okay there's plenty of guys who are in the minors who you might have projected to be in The Bigs this year have gone out with Tommy John with with bregman 2 is it's what happens when he hits the market like like does he get the Cody Bellinger reaction where if Alex is looking for a you know $30 million you know aav contract that locks him in for five or six years does anyone actually Pony up or what happened to Cody Bellinger and Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery this last off season where they all got told no by the entire league not a single team offered those guys those contracts so if that happens that actually I would assume works in the favor of the Astros because maybe he doesn't want to I guess he already moved but like maybe he wants to stay in Houston and and could re-evaluate a year after but if I was Jim Crane to me Alex bregman Kyle Tucker one of those guys you have to pay
