good evening today is Thursday July 25th 2024 we're reconvening we got a lot of stuff to talk about tonight breaking down the Bama roster and catching up a little bit so uh let's break some stuff now [Music] hello hello hello everyone welcome to the couch casters podcast we're back and been uh been been seen everyone in a minute um sorry to the Twitter crowd that Tunes in but we are no longer allowed to broadcast live on Twitter until we pay for a premium membership so we cannot broadcast on Twitter anymore so anyway we're coming to you live from the YouTube so hopefully right now so yes apologize about that so we cannot stream to either Twitter platform have to have a premium membership now so that's wonderful thank you Elon for that yeah so anyway take and they take and they take goodness gra good day everyone not sure where Murphy is but uh maybe he'll pop in maybe he won't last time we reconvened um last time we convened the Panthers have just won the Stanley Cup so maybe he's still sleeping that off jeez it's been that long yeah it's a minute full month lot of recruiting stuff happening we got practice starting in a couple weeks finally get some some answers to some questions and seeing some pads and cleats and hearing the crack of helmets and pads and coaches hollering and all that stuff so I mean it's this could be it's good to be this time of year means football's right around the corner it's coming up I'm excited I was just about to say that F very very excited um was actually sitting down at work today and uh sitting around with a group of people and I'm like I'm I'm excited you know because there's just so much new stuff going on I mean there's so much to you know look at this year I mean even as a Bama fan but as a college football fan too so many changes and who knows what's on the horizon you know all the new stuff is just new rules new conferences you know some new coaches um I mean this I thought the Intrigue going into last year was off the charts but I mean this year it's just it blows last year away there is no chart for the the just unknown I mean just all around for me at Bama it was like you know this the the so so many unknowns going into our season last year with quarterback and you know Tommy Reese and you know all this stuff and you just you know having Kevin steel back for there's just so much unknown going into last year but it's even more this year so that's um I thought media day I normally don't Tune In Media days because it's just kind of boring heing coach speak you know and they're just like oh my God what else I mean what's he supposed to get up there and say you know well we look like [ __ ] you know pardon my French I mean they're not going to say that still anything is better Thea coach did anything is better than what that guy did did anybody see that no oh my gosh that is one of the worst first interviews I think I've ever seen if not the worst if you haven't watched out there go and look it up it's cringeworthy you get it's not even secondhand embarrassment it's like thirdhand embarrassment that's how bad it is he I mean he's just trying what are you supposed to say and then he's just uh he went completely in the spotlight and uh headlights just Deering the headlights completely silent up there nobody was asking him anything and he was the whole room was just silent I'm like oh that is that that is not good I mean I remember that hire came out of nowhere that Deshawn Watson or not deshun Watson but deshun Foster H right he was the start running back try to find a coach there I mean seriously I went to Fran Chon's first game and he was the starting running back for UCLA that day ran for like aund um 100 and something yards and the year before he out at UCLA he went bananas in I guess that was 2000 when we opened the season at UCLA ranked number three Freddy millons ran a punt back early in that game and we were up like seven zip and feeling our eles and then we got slaughtered and desan Foster had like 170 yards rushing and and we got we just got killed and then we wound up three and eight and dubos got fired and it was just crazy it's a start of season number three and to get three and eight that's uh that's tough to do off an SEC Championship and having a dynamic playmaker like Mills on the team and just goly just whatever man anyway but I um I I liked you know the boy I thought dbor did a great job in this First Media day you know I mean it's a tough those are bright lights to stand up under and I thought with especially with Sabin sitting at the media desk you know 100 yards in I thought he was me his media appearances have been awesome I mean he knows he can really articulate it to us casual fan so I love not casual but you know what I mean he had his laptop out and he was like had his notes there and I mean he was he was doing a I thought a very good job of being a unbiased media member you know and you know you're almost worri could he be you know so far trying to not favor Bama that he's overly critical you know trying to not not show favoritism but I didn't think he did that I thought he was very I'm glad you mentioned that because he's not doing and a lot of people criticize Greg marroy of doing that being so trying to not be so biased uh for Bama that it's almost to the other side of it to be like no okay I I don't think we'll see that I think he's just G it the clearcut I mean obviously he has his ties to where he was I heck he's got ties to LSU too so but Bama was home um it'll be interesting I I I don't think we'll see it as much just because of how he how he is uh he just loves the game and he can really really just dive into the Into the Depths that me you know analysis is yeah it's I think that was a great hire for them I mean just the knowledge but also the Persona and the impact he brings like you're just going to get more people tuned in just because he's there too yeah you know and he he is very objective you know and it keeps him around the game it keeps him involved in the game and and you know he doesn't just get thrown out to pasture to you know Willow and die somewhere you know he's still actively involved in it and I'm sure they I'm sure they seek as um you know his counsil on stuff his opinion on things you know I know a lot of those you see that clip of Brian dable in I guess in the draft room or something or oh yeah and he was like sa said three skill players this draft caus him problems and so I mean I mean he's he's still act you know going to be all over the place and and but it's it really was sinking in seeing sain at the counter and then dor you know up there talking and you know but I thought he did fantastic I loved what I heard from him the Oneness of the team the unity of the team you know the the desire to get better and to accept new coaching and and uh I'm I'm just beyond excited about this season this is Dreadful is it we were looking know knew the day was coming where sain was going to step down you know is you're 15 16 17 you just knew that okay one of these years he's just going to walk away and it finally happened to from all from milro especially um it's been incredible I think he's really stepped up you know after last year probably likely rumors probably not a lot of Truth to the fracture in the locker room at the beginning of last season being the center of that but um he's just especially this offseason's really stepped up and he's an ambassador for the program he's going on all these shows he's great with the media um he just met with Aaron judge yesterday with the we got Jeff here wearing the Yankees and he's over there giving him a Alabama 99 Aaron judge Jersey and you just there let me let just stop right there and say it puts in perspective how huge Aaron judge is I was just about to say I mean yes milro and milro is no slouch he's 6'2 about 230 240 I mean he's huge that Aaron judge is I he's not from this planet I don't know where he's from because I mean especially when they met him you know he picked him up like a little kid and he was like Hey right it was just insane no they were giving each other D and judge had to like lean over to give him D you know and I was like this man is a ginormous oh my gosh I'm just trying I'm still wrapping my head around that VI that video and I'm like I mean you know watching the Yankee game you can just tell he's big but you don't really can't tell until you see him in the Dugout or giving high fives to his teammates got at least 28er than everybody right I mean 285 290 yeah he's got to be that b 275 I think and he is a big big guy goodness gracious but but yeah I mean to your point um great Ambassador going to all these different places and at really representing the brand and the school he did the uh ESP in tour today or whatever he was on all the shows MH Smith Good Morning America and then First Take and was he on one after that Stephen A Smith's show yeah I don't know what else he did good for in media days he was great yes he's all over the place so polished he doesn't BS up there he doesn't give you cliche answers um no he just gives it to raw just think he's very mature and understands where this team is at where this program's at I have full confidence in him I mean I did last year even when everyone was ripping him apart and he got ripped I'm really excited for this season for Jaylen in particular but I mean you know I I ripped him a good bit last year um but I think that was the biggest sell I think Debo had to make when he met the team that night was he had to sell milro from I mean not just because he was qb1 but from the leadership and the and how many guys look up to him and you know I wonder how many guys you know if you if they sat down and we're 100% honest with you stayed because Jaylen stayed and huge factoring like okay everything's gonna be okay you know jaylen's not going anywhere we're going to be okay and I I I just wonder how many guys that settled like okay we're I mean some guys were going to stay regardless they're loyal to the to the tide you know but there's probably a handful that had milro left probably would not have stuck around I don't know names I'm not taking any guesses but I'm just saying there there may have been a handful that mhm you know that moved on yeah 100% he stuck around and he's owning it and I mean he's that's one that's one heck of a young man there so and the adversity he went through last year right out of the gate really you know Texas throwing two critical picks really cost us the game honestly you know and that and DT's down the field blunder but you know without those two picks Texas doesn't I who knows where that game ends up if it's a three-point game instead of a 10-point game you know and then being benched for South Florida for whatever reason that was we have our theories but and then he really just took the season over man saved the season and and really was our lynchpin coming back this year he's going to be a nightmare especially um you know divor talked about getting him better in the intermediate game a lot jaylen's addressed it correctly if he improves just a little bit there he's Unstoppable really I mean makes that much more dangerous yeah to 100% because I mean if he's a guy who is only a deep threat and can run around the field and just out aete you the whole day I mean putting the team on his back but thankfully there's a lot of tools this year that I think we are even better than we were last year structure-wise now we lost a lot of good talent lot to the NFL but yeah to your point and I I I really that's going to be the major thing to see is if those read the the reads he was making and those short intermediate throws the five 10 15 short yard throws um quick quick Slants too you can't bullet passes into a 5 yard slant or an eight yard slant um so touch is a big thing too Jeff you and I briefly talked about that that it was just it was like a rocket coming off on some of those short passes and I mean as a receiver that's it's hard to catch that so yeah hit or drug or whatever whatever it's makes it Tad difficult I'd say but you just needs to stay another thing and I think he'll get better at it he got better at it over the course of the season last year is just stepping up in the pocket and staying there I mean we all know how the offensive line was early last year and how many sacks he was taking and some of them were his fault most of them weren't whatever but whenever he does that he takes away all his options he can't make reads he has to turn around he's probably missing reads that he could he's probably missing open receivers he could throw the ball to when he's moving around so much um and the Bor offense is really relying on you know deep step backs throwing the ball over the top or getting the ball over the middle on intermediate routes and I think Jaylen can Feast if he just stays confident in the pocket stops moving his feet you know the runs there take it but don't do it prematurely don't always try to make a play you know a lot of these stuff just it comes to you the good quarterbacks make those throws me Joe burrow not to make comparisons Joe burough is probably the best single season college quarterback ever but oh my God that was ridiculous everything just came to him he just let his players work and if Jaylen can just do that a little better this offense would be just fine it'll be one of the best in the country so see to your point uh Fon it says the great quarterbacks know how to do it um you look at Bryce Bryce knew how to do it although he took too many R he was very risky towards the end on some of those decisions we saw that against Arkansas I think it was his junior year and then Jaylen ended up playing the next game um but to your point like M Jones he was another one who step up in the pocket now he's obviously not as athletic as Joe burrow but it's the same same kind of idea the best quarterbacks uh they know how to you know overcome the adversities that they're facing and especially reading reading these defenses because I think that's going to be how complex the offenses are nowadays the defense and the defensive schemes are as complex as well it's it's really quite difficult um but that's a big thing I'm very excited about is the 425 defense uh defense mindset I'm I'm very very very interested in to see how we play with this because uh I think it gives us more range to play across the field um so if we get beat on an outside I mean we can mitigate and L uh minimize the damage as far as the big Gams um I love the 3 four I do um we ran that for many many years under saving but you know I think this is a good change especially with the times well I will say I think turnovers are going to be a big thing this defense is very very rant on man-to-man coverage I have no idea if we be able to cover manto man across the field I really don't we have like no experience we'll talk about it in a little bit oh yeah but um be great be not so good you know we'll see but I'm excited just for the the energy and the ball Hawking and yes I think the defensive line can really star again too especially late in we were very relying on the edge rushers for everything now that we're probably going to only be rushing four guys most of the time we're relying on really two defensive tackles not two true defensive tackles but two guys in the middle of that line I think they're going to rush a lot more and a lot harder in the middle so I think that'll open up some things too and definitely be a different look and you know we won't have to rely on Dallas Turner or will Anderson to basically be our pass rush so it all starts with the defensive line like the ripple effect out with the linebackers the DBS if the defensive line gets can't get pressure then it it you're dead game over because if you've got to start blitzing to get pressure you know with that zero Blitz crap Golding ran all the time with 2 two in there and would we would it would just leave the middle of the field so wide open because it's the only way we could get consistent pressure that's how you get diced up you know and so the defensive line has to create pressure not saying every play they have to sack the quarterback but they've got to create disrupt the pocket you can't always have to have to rely on these Blitz schemes to get pressure and that's been a a a huge hangup of mine the last several years is you know our only pressure was coming from the outside edge rushers you know brazwell or Turner Will Anderson you know those that group and we just could not seem to get any pressure up the middle or even from the the other any defensive lineman but I think Jem Otis is going to rec havic I mean he looks too like that he's gonna be a problem I'm gonna I'm going to go ahead and say that I know we don't get to the defensive line until later on I think couple weeks out but Mark that name down next week yeah I think it may be next week but yes with I think we were heavy on him two years ago when he was coming out of high school and he went to A&M part of that heralded class well we we know how that turned out whoops old uh oh A&M still paying old Jimbo they paid him out a good what what was that uh 40 million 50 million buyout go away must be nice you got to mention uh Tim Smith is back to yes I'm glad you brought up Kan another one yeah I mean there's probably seven or eight guys that could rotate with confidence it'll likely be five or six next week when we dive into the defensive line linebackers we we'll break this down but I'm really excited about key as well I think that guy's on the edge of something so I like that they put him on the line now too it's more as you know I think he was kind of trending towards being a outside linebacker pure Edge guy but putting him up at defensive end I think will benefit agreed whole defense yeah we'll break all that down next week we'll getting more of that but that was just a name that I was really excited about you know those defensive lineman so um but that's a good segue into our part one of our roster breakdown we did this last year um really helped me get to know the new numbers and the new players so a lot of new numbers man I had to do lot of updating on the charts for the guys that were here from last year um so is it officially official now like everybody is their number that is what they're going to be and they're not going to change it anymore coming up right I mean I can't say they'll never change a number but but as of today roster and the numbers are are out there in the world so gotcha anyway so yeah I'm going to uh we're going to pull up the chalkboard here here and as we dive into our defensive backs so this is the this is a pretty good list here um dman is gonna play corner right yes yeah danman's he's gonna start we're just gonna say it yeah and I think Keon Sab Sab is it Sab yeah he's I think he makes an impact too yeah he'll be our safety he's the one from Michigan Right correct and like go ahead I was going to say this King Mack is the one from Penn State um I think he's got a real shot to Make Some Noise he does I I like him a lot he's he's a Rover man like pure athlete um can cover the Run supposedly pretty well but he's just super athletic and just a ball Hawk so hasn't translated yet you know he didn't really play much at Penn State but I I'm excited for him and I think he could play a lot this year so I mean you this whole left side of this list is just some Playmakers is what I'm seeing Devonte Smith I mean he he's going to be able to make some I know uh Jaylen The Freshman down there number nine isak is gonna be a freak I'm I don't know a better offensive player that's what's scary which I see I mean honestly I don't know I mean we we have no idea how the season's going to transpire how everything's gonna he could be playing by the end of the season could be starting who knows don't be surprised if at some point in his career he you see him on the offensive side of the ball not fulltime but in some kind of package with his speed and athletic ability I mean the guys a him and him and Hollywood were basically trading Haymakers in that playoff game in high school like it's just like Ryan would score and then mock would be playing I I think he was playing quarterback for the other team and he would they would go down and score man it's just like trade and blows yes that says drer Patrick Jr oh yes I mean Dre only 35 right so yeah yeah he know he it yeah there you go he went to that Trent Richardson School of uh early Parenthood well I mean they were they I think they graduated together so it all works out makes sense um no yeah I mean that is that's crazy to see because I can remember watching his dad play at Alabama not uh not 10 or it was probably 12 years ago first time I saw him was in 2010 and he helped seal will win against Arkansas with an interception against Ryan and mallet and that was uh that was impressive now 2010 I know it was a rough year we had three losses big big rough year I know but it'll be interesting to see what uh his son can do I'm really really interested on that yeah he wasn't rated very high so you know I don't expect I don't expect a ton from him early you know he might be a red shirt candidate you know until he kind of develops more or maybe who knows maybe he'll maybe he'll make a think a giant you know push for some playing time or something but I like him a lot there there's some good players here he's he's long I just don't think he'll play this year or even next year but um Deshawn Jones from Wake Forest he's a two-year starter I think he'll step in right away and at least play a majority of the snaps and season goes on who knows but I think I couldn't remember which is the one from Wake Forest yeah Sean like him I think he'll I think he'll play a lot early is another one that that name's trendon yes I I'm I know I was big on oh gosh and he transferred to Florida State last year or this past season Earl Earl little that was one who I was talking big on last year and I really do think had he stayed in this geme he would be I mean I really thought he was going to play some last year um obviously didn't pan out but red Morgan go ahead Alabama fans keep your antennas up for that name he will be making an impact Here app he can fly yeah run like a deer I mean he the guy can move so oh we gotta yes and then you know Bray hub's another one that's a good question uh fast he's athletic I don't know if 98 speed I don't know how to compare that to real life but thanks Antoine for the comment um he's a freak yeah I don't know if he's I noticed that I don't have the game but I played it with a friend but I noticed that his he speed was up there because when I was looking at kick returners you know the I sorted by speed and he was up there he was might have been the fastest or near the top if I can't remember but first move I did was put Ryan Williams in the rotation I think ran track yes inside slot he's oh that's good yeah which speed kills man speed makes up for a lot of deficiencies a lot of things you might be lacking speed makes up for a lot of that stuff but the other one I was looking at is Hurley too 25 that's another big name I'm like looking at this and as I said the whole left side of this list and because I really didn't know about King Mack and Deshawn Jones I know that you said that they transfers one from Wake Forest and one from Penn State Right facts uh yes that would be insane uh Antoine that that would be something everybody would need to buckle up the chin straps belt buckles what you not because I don't think you'd either catch one either one of them as long as the blocking was fun I mean that would just be insane I like I'm excited about zavan Brown too I've heard uh I've heard some good stuff about him coming out of you know just people I know that talk to me or whatever that are up around there that see things and and that's a name that I think keep an eye on is zavan zavan brown um a lot of good young Talent here Xavier Vincy brown red Morgan Hurley and bway those are all freshman tons tons of potential here you know like I said even King Mack he has one year of really practice at Penn State sophomore yeah lot a lot of Youth Talent here and you know who knows it may take a couple weeks I'd like to see some of these younger guys get a lot of snaps if they're ready early on same developing them so by week six you know you find a I don't want to say a diamond in the rough because they're all high four or five stars but you know maybe we find a guy that can be a lock down corner across from demman Jackson so mhm we can do that I feel much better about this scheme in particular and I think W's a great coordinator so I think they'll figure it out but um I just I don't know could be the best secondary we've seen in a while Oran could be I think they'll be to your point Jeff yeah I think there'll be some Growing Pains but I don't know I'm I'm pretty confident about when it comes to it I mean so much unknown because we don't know how exactly what they responsibility will be in this new scheme running 425 you know a lot of these offenses now keep four and five receivers on the field at all times so we're going to have to we're going to have to run cornerback you know pretty deep we can't just run five out there you know for every play every game so there's going to be a lot of opportunity I think for or some of these younger kids to to have an opportunity to to make some noise and make their presence felt even in special teams or just as you know as depth pieces so I ended up doing just a little buy of myself I wanted to go ahead and try and figure out and learn that about the 425 defense because we've been so fixated on the for the 43 the past couple years or a multiple uh defensive scheme yeah ended up getting this book right here oh it's it's not going to show it that's unfortunate it's called I don't know D com it hold on one second hold on one second so I know Sabin was like a base three four but you the last probably five years I mean we never ran that because you couldn't I mean there was always four five receivers in the field y'all see that this the 425 defense it's a uh decent read uh gives you a base concept of what everything's going on with it but I really started to dive into that reading too and it's uh it's pretty complex kind of like what you said it's different it's not like the th uh the 3 four but uh definitely something different I actually heard that this defense is much easier for the players yes I did too because their responsibilities like Sabin and we talked about it at l multiple times just how everyone looks so confused and the coverages are so complex that particularly DeMarco Helms a couple years ago could not figure it out um no he could not he wasn't the only one anyway it's just I think kind of having the ability to roam I know wac likes a single high safety a lot um having someone back there with athleticism that just kind of is always watching the quarterback that's a big thing in Kane wi system too is everyone has their eyes on the quarterback um it's much more relying on instincts and just being natural out there playing football not saying that we weren't doing that last year but I think the emphasis is so much more on just watching the ball and watching the quarterback and feeling the game that it will really benefit the secondary in particular um we just discussed how young they are I'm not saying that they're going to light it up right away and be unstoppable or anything but I just think the sky is so high in this new system the secondary especially ifive line can finish up front you know rushing the passer yeah some really good things could happen so I mean you think about the defense this year I mean next year or I'm are the DBS in in in total but next year this group if they stay a good bit of them stay now obviously we'd lose Malachi we lose a couple probably to the transfer portal I mean that's just the way it is nowadays but um if we can keep the majority of these these these kids back I mean they'll be legit it'll be probably the best secondary group or room in the country possibly um that's take on it so I know that's a pretty hot take but I'll I'll take that one where do you guys see Malachi balling this year like is he gonna be like a Rover almost I'm gonna say he's gonna be a Rover to like almost like I wouldn't say a free safety to but I mean he's going to be as like a star position he's going to be what Minka could have been or was all over the field line up on the best players and trying you know just because he is he's the leader of that defensive room or defensive back room but also the defensive room too um what's the lexon now is it like husky is that like the new Star yes that's right it's husky okay husky okay yeah I think he'll probably just stay kind of in that role but there's so much flexibility like Parker said too with you know 425 base that he could move around everywhere and I mean he's a stud it's incredible he came back I really didn't think he would the fact that he's that he's here in year five as a graduate okay blows me free safety you want your must extr Gap oh okay good call because I mean because being free safety they're the generals of the defensive backs yeah the strong safety is more of like an extra linebacker yeah they come box a lot m so yeah Antoine great Point um but yeah he is going to be the Gen the general of the uh the D yeah D late oh yeah wow okay not we're get we're getting taught stuff right here today I like that say I so confident and this guy's probably calling me an idiot but well I mean things have got to be I mean just if anything to mitigate the big chunk plays uh cuz that was just our Kryptonite for it seemed like for the last 5 years we would just get absolutely decimated and leave people just wide open and all the fans the people watching were like oh how did it happen well it could have been kind of like to what Scott said uh we're focusing too much on the coverage itself other than playing football reading the quarterback's ey seeing exactly what he's doing now I know growing up they didn't really want us they didn't teach us just to you know want to watch the quarterback's eyes as a defense on the defensive backside you want to stay with your receiver and follow the you know the coverage pattern but to your point I think it gives you a little bit more freedom um you'll be able to really really play football and play you know use your athleticism to the ability of the players so yeah I agree with that I'm curious if they'll still be taught to you know stay in Phase which you know as we know has been our a screaming point for us the last couple years is they never turn around and find the ball even when the balls just floating in the air for 10 minutes and I think that's a saing technique I really over before we turn the ball over turn around and pick the ball off because that's an old that's an old school style of as the DB is infuriating it it it really was to not even be able to contest for the ball as a cornerback especially on those you know those Corner routes or those literally those sideline routes where that's probably the toughest play as a cornerback getting those those Corner routes oh yeah oh yeah and it's just I mean if it's put on a dime by the quarterback the the quarterback's not catching it it's not catching it it's not happening um no but there were a lot of throws I felt had we had we turned and found the ball either swatted away or even or pick it off thought there were SE I mean I yeah swear I saw a ton of those the last several years is us just running with the back you know not even turning to find the ball even when the receiver's eyes get big and they can see him load up to jump for it and we just run either straight through them or or stay in phase and then pass interference or catch man so I don't know it'd be interesting to see how they're how they're Co how these especially these freshman all these freshmen here that hadn't been coached like that the last couple years you know of staying in Phase maybe they've been taught differently or you they come into this scheme and be taught fresh from the ground up in this scheme which is also what I'm really excited about this I mean one two three four five six freshman DBS that I think and I think three of them have a shot to really play oh yeah probably four four yeah I mean I know Curly's a red shirt but if you want to throw him in there five or freshman and him like yeah there's just there's so much potential here I like this group a lot and I think they'll be good but yeah but see like don't like being so uncertain about what we got that's true because that's what I mean that's all that we have because we don't we just don't know we've we've King Max been playing but we we've never watched Penn State paid attention to their DBS Deshawn Jones at wake we don't care about wake nobody was studying wake's defensive backs and at least nobody on this show anyway um it's same with Cam Howard you know it's like there's all these young guys but then you look and there's just a the right amount of experience Sab red shirt sophomore so this is his third year that's a big deal Smitty junr dman Jr Malachi graduate student you know um Deshawn Jones red shirt Jr so this is his fourth year so I mean that's that's a lot of experience with a lot of Youth which I think is a good combo because it gives these guys a year to really learn behind a lot of this experience L the foundation down before it's on to other things and then year two for these freshmen yeah I think they're set up in a really good spot to learn the defense from the ground up and uh and and learn to be an Alabama football player or a college football player from these older guys because some of them you know were transfers in haven't played atama yet but but they've played a big game pack Stadium you know on TV you know they they know what it is and and D playing DB and man coverage man takes balls when when you said about the statement about playing in front of that many people you know uh I think deanii said it the best you know he played at USC transferred in and he like I don't think uh yes you're yes very frustrating very very I I would pull my hair out watching football games for them not looking back at the ball but but no to your point like that's a whole he's like it was a whole different game when I came down here to to tuscala from USC people didn't care about football as much over there compared to down here it what it is it's it's one of the things that we love down here we love college football and especially us B fans we love the University of Alabama so like the fifth thing on the docket down there to do two pro teams Lakers Clippers Rams Chargers and they really don't care about the Rams the beach Hollywood I mean you know USC is almost an afterthought unless they're competing but you know if they're just Rolling Along at three four losses you know nobody cares about USD yeah they're not it's not the days of the Matt liner Reggie Bush and um who whoever the other running back was I couldn't remember his name um Lindell white Lindell white that's right thunder and lightning um but yeah those days I mean I I just and that that whole situation over there and they've been talking about it recently too Lincoln Riley made a statement I think it was yesterday about how Alabama did so well and they they they uh were gifted so many wins because of having week out of conference schedules and I it kind of rubbed me the wrong way yes we did schedule some bad ones literally probably before the Iron Bowl a couple times I know we played Mercer The Citadel a couple times but opening up the seasons We we played against Clemson in '08 we played against Virginia Tech in ' 09 we played I know we played against Penn State on a home and Home in a 10 and 11 we played Michigan around the same time I mean we are out of conference starting 12 I think or maybe 14 yeah that was I mean we played we played Louisville it wasn't bunch a no we had a couple of cream puff openers but we basically we basically made it cool to play the the the neutral site opening big game 2016 we played youc and beat the dog you know what out of USC they were coming out saying oh they're they're gonna whip Alabama's butt we beat him 52-3 made him go crying back home all right that was the that was Blake Barnett's start that was when Barnett quit the team like in the third quarter yeah yes he was literally walking to the locker room saying I'm done I'm going to South Florida or Arizona State or whereever I'm not saying I agree with Lincoln Riley like I think our schedule was probably on the ho harder than people thought it was I think we were so dominant that it just appeared that we were playing nobody but some of the neutral sight opening games against like Miami for example and Louisville like there aren't really tests for a school like Alabama no but at the same time Ohio State's not going to come play us you know a lot of these schools in the top 10 top 15 aren't going to want to come to play us on a home at home um over the next decade we have a ton of Home in homes which is great we got Wisconsin this year so it's pretty cool I love the home I'm not a neutral sight game guy yeah me neither and that's what I'm trying to say is and I think it diminishes the magnitude of the game um you still have to go and play and beat the team but playing on the road is more difficult a um and B like I get Lincoln Riley's point but at the same time you're going to have a really difficult time trying to pull teams to play the number one the number two the number three team in the nation year in and year out LSU gets those games all the time but he tried to back out of the LSU game this year program you know so it's a little different that not been for yes yes he he's tried to pull out a numerous why do you think he left Oklahoma because he knew that Oklahoma was about to join the SEC so he goes and joins USC knew that he is a I didn't know that he was trying to get out of the one sec game he had to play uhhuh he tried I think it was sometime about eight months ago and it came out about it like and you know had it not been for him having Caleb Williams how would have the last two seasons gone for USC would he still be the head coach that's a good question because he bail as much as I dislike Caleb Williams he bailed them out time and time again uh they could have been six and six seven and five while there while they were there and I know if just the stuff I've been reading and heard that if they don't produce something this year there might be talks next year about saying if he doesn't win you know get to the playoff next year they might can him so I mean that'll be like four or five years at USC if I'm not mistaken I think four but I mean he was but um I mean his defense has been atrocious and it's on him but at the same time it's really not I think he made a bad higher I think it was a mistake he brought the dude from Oklahoma with him to USC yeah I mean get confident defensive staff in there I think the offense will be good enough to get them places but that's what scares me the most about LSU this year is that they may actually have a defense and as long as Brian Kelly's there their offense is going to score they're going to have an elite offense as long as he's there and they got the number one quarterback committed for next year in Underwood So and they just got Derrick Meadows n Meers no slouch being their starting quarterback this year n Meers no slouch he's been there years like he's ready to he's ready to take the take the shot take the job but they they scare me if they ever get a competent defense the LSU does does scare me here's my thing though like I think they're a super competitive team I think they'll remain that but like where do you rank nus Meer out of SEC quarterbacks right now you can't I can't rank him he's never played it's true but I think just on pure talent like middle of the pack middle of the pack thank you yeah he's middle of the pack until I see something it's Conor wman is a very good quarterback but for the SEC he's overshadowed by six or seven guys yeah you know I think he's one of those they may have two or three receivers that end up breaking out and be great not trying to diminish them before the season starts but I just I still see them as nine and three you know yeah now Kelly's gonna lose one or games a year he shouldn't you know and the problem is you add those to the one or two games that he should and you get four losses and you're out of the playoffs um that's been the Brian Kelly's MO is he loses a couple games he shouldn't a game or two he shouldn't so um but you know he's nuts Meer is kind of what milro was to us last year you know we saw it's true little flashes he played some played played some D mop-up Duty played an an injury game and just really had no clue what to expect and and even out of the first month of the Season you know we were still like uh there's been a flash here and there but oh I don't know about this and then he got it so or he started to get it and which I think it's going to pois him to just unleash this year so I think nus Meer could he's going to put up numbers just in the offense just based on the offense itself and whether he can make big time throws you know Jane Daniels was all everything last year and and but he couldn't move the ball in the second half against us and then he got blown up and that was the end of him somehow won the Heisman with four losses I don't understand that but well he was I mean let's be real for just one second if they had middle of the pack SEC defense keep saying middle of the pack but middle of the pack defense I mean that's being generous too they would be they would have been very very difficult to beat last year they were horrible Harold Perkins I know a lot of it was the role they tried to kind of move I had no idea what they were doing with him yeah I mean they just took him away from everything he was doing well as freshman year but he's terrified has the talent to be a game wer so if they just find a way to get him involved in that way a little more how does Kelly let that go for 13 games them trying to play him out of position it's like why would you take your best pass rusher and move him to a linebacker coverage Zone guy the guy was wrecking games as a true freshman he was I mean he was a freak is I hear you talking about Perkins yeah his versatility is great but so I think this year he's gonna be back doing what he does which is kind of like a micel Parsons where he's going to rush the passer mostly um but they'll drop him in zone some just to confuse but I think his his main deal is he's going to be coming after the quarterback yeah should be I mean he's he was as you as y'all probably already said he was legit his freshman year um yeah that's all I got to say out of place Yeah just they put him in the bad positions it's just not I mean that's just bad coaching he's playing for draft stock this year so I'm expecting a big year out of Perkins so he's one that kind of scares me you know when we play in death in um Death Valley this year we do play them in Baton Rouge this year right correct that's always a tough place to play even though Bama has had a lot of success there over its history it doesn't change the fact that that's a I guarantee you I don't know that dor ever played in a game a night game like he's gonna encounter that night I don't know that he's ever played or coached in one that he's going to see and experience that night because that'll be a prime time unless LSU is 0 and four or 0 and six and we're one and six or something like that that that game's going to be ABC Prime Time 6 o'clock bat Rouge is going to have been drinking for two days straight before that game even kicks off getting ready for that game and that place is going to be lit so that especially when that game gets towards you know fourth quarter and it's 9 o'clock 9:30 at night and that I mean that place is just it's going to unleash so you know dor has never never gone through anything like that I don't think or you experience anything like that and he he he couldn't have he's never been in a at a level where he could coaching a game like that I don't think if he it like let's say theoretical let's say he does really well for the next two years and makes the jump to NFL and not and and the Sabin route that's what I call it NFL route doesn't go too well he tries to come back I don't think even if he were to go to another bigname school let's say Ohio State opens up down the road uh there's no environment like the SEC nothing Michigan and Penn St Michigan Mich I mean that's that's but you got AR the best or the most difficult plac you think so okay I have never been so I don't know I'm a little biased I'll say it on that but I've heard that the game against anything I mean on average I think the average SEC away game is more difficult than any other conference in the country by far excluding Michigan and Penn State Michigan and Penn State are they're right up there there in the top 10 it's fair and that's what I'm saying it's like AR let's say this when Arkansas's competitive fville fville is tough uh when oh miss is competitive Oxford's tough Missy State them them them damn C cowbells man they annoy the crap out of me and whenever de uh Debo's got to go there that'll be another thing he's got to experience he's be like I've never heard anybody just yell bells for four quarters so these are you're right these are all first he's going to go it's just you think about a game at South Carolina versus a game at it's hard to find a comparable Big 10 program Washington State or like Minnesota or Purdue when they're yeah six and three yeah going in it's just different you know it's like it's definitely environment yeah yes I'm I've got SEC bias written all over me I'm not going to deny we're all not going to sit up here and act like we're not biased towards the SEC um I hate Michigan and Penn State I'm just trying to give them some credit well and and that's one of the things too and I I I want to make it it's on my bucket list to go to a go to a a big pen State game because I want to see a white out game because it it but apparently it's like a hop skip and a jump to get to Happy Valley uh it's in the middle of nowhere so that's interesting I am interested nowhere Penn State campus nothing well that's one and then I would like to see the game I want to see Ohio State and Michigan I know how hard it is to get that but I'd also just like to go to either one of those Stadium go to the shoe or go to the big house uh at least once um but yeah yeah I don't doubt it's hard Michigan I mean I know that's they've got one of the if not the top three biggest stadiums in the country so I'd like to see that I think it's biggest the biggest yeah 110 112 something like that the way Tiger Stadium is built the noise level I'll put that up against any any Stadium anywhere the way that tiger LSU yeah they're they're 101 now I think they're 100K or 99 or 100K but the way it's constructed and how steep the the bleachers are that sound just has nowhere to go s yeah yeah it just the noise hits itself and goes down like this I mean that place like Ohio state is massive I think I think it's Michigan Penn State Ohio state are the three largest stadiums in the country Ohio State's just not that loud yeah one Z how Brian Denny is the way that Brian denil the sound shoots out of the top it doesn't keep the sound in that's why Brian Denny's notoriously quiet for aund 2,000 seat stadium and see they they dropped numbers with the renovation that happened uh we're back under 100,000 now we're like at 99 um 700 and whatever it's I was like well well I mean I still got a ticket stub of when the upper deck was finished on the the southern end zone for the student section and ticket says 101 328,000 and I was like that is insane that was so many Brian Denny when there was only one Upper Deck Upper Deck yep CU I I went to a Vanderbilt game and I was literally sitting on the last aisle of the side without the upper deck you could just look over the that that railing back there that fence back there and see straight down to the ground cuz there was no there was no second deck it was that one deck it was just so goofy looking that that was 1995 I think I think LSU is probably the hardest I will say sorry I was just stewing over it I think LSU is probably the hardest place to play in the country I would say that at night especially you're 11 A.M game not not so much but those night games Tiger Stadium are a whole different animal I think Clemson's tough um I think Wisconsin thinking about our schedule I think Wisconsin's a tough place to play too Camp Randall yep so but you know one these newbies have never dealt with the Jordan ha voodoo man I was about I'm so glad you said that explain it to them until they've seen it up close it's goord hair on a night game on a crisp November night you'll see you'll see you didn't even think you could see pardon my French I'm sorry sorry for saying that but you'll see stuff that you're just like what what how how is that possible what defis possibility I mean it's just I am interested to see how theor does on the road because kind of struggled on the road last year I know he did a lot with a little and the talent level is immeasurably different but um it's one thing that scares me I'm not particularly high on Oklahoma but I think that's a tough game you know that's when I've got marked big time that's just a tough place to play anyway y Norman yeah I mean all these SEC games are going to be I mean except for Vanderbilt but I mean even that that little box Missouri plays in I mean that's a tough they're any road game is gonna be a tough game I mean you're it's going to be a tough scores don't always indicate the difficulty it is to play on the road I mean Alabama kicked a lot of people's ass on the road but that wasn't because it was easy place to play that's right you know it's just that we executed and had better players and you we better prepared won the game but I mean some of those those Road stadiums are hard to play in SEC that doesn't get enough credit even though everybody's like Renly says oh the SEC is the best conference blah blah blah but it doesn't get enough credit for even the the Lesser sized SEC stadiums that aren't 90 80 90 100K but all those SEC stadiums are tough places to play Road game in South Carolina is the first that comes to mind crowd you know you know especially if you're a team like Alabama where every road game you're getting the other seems Best Shot you know it's tough I mean just look at Mississippi State I don't have statistics in front of me or anything but they play everyone close at home at seems they rarely get blown out um yeah Georgia a couple years ago and Alabama three years ago I remember those being plots but other than that it seems like every game there even when they are are just grossly grossly worse than the other team seems to be super competitive yeah the swamp agree with that just the humidity in that that hole in Gainesville that's a whole another thing I'm going to be interested to see and if I'm not if I mess this up I'm sorry I thinking that Miami comes to town this year and plac Florida in the swamp early in the season if I'm not mistaken September week one or two um that's going to be interesting they've got that Miami's got the uh transfer quarterback from Washington State cam H Howard cam cam Ward cam Ward sorry that's my bad but I mean they're gonna be they're gonna be better uh Billy Napier being a little bit on the hot seat too I mean I have no idea where this goes I was expecting much more from from from them with him there's there is a world I mean Florida's schedule's brutal I oh it's the hard I think it's the hardest in the country it's tough makes it there's a world where they go like one in 11 really is I mean I don't think he makes it to week six that's my prediction is that he's fired before I mean they have sford but you know it's Miami I think they play A&M LSU Tennessee I think they have UCF in there Georgia there's no slouch I mean UCF finished pretty strong last year and they got another one of those that's a group of five team or whatever you call quack yeah Texas and will miss too I mean they UCF has KJ Jefferson yeah but yes Florida basically plays five of the top six teams in the SEC Mississippi State on the road Miami team that's talented Samford which they should win we'll see A&M I mean Kentucky is going to be extremely physical it's gonna be let's not forget the last game of the regular season we got Florida State right at the end of the season to and they're pissed so I have no idea how that's going to go oh that's G that could be rough you might be right fony he might go one and 11 if he makes it it to Jeff's point if he makes it to week go 11 because if he'll get fired long before that oh that's brutal that's freaking brutal go one 11 Napier will be about one and six and fired if that happens they could end up being really good I I doubt it but honestly I don't see a way they win more than four games yeah me either and this is Florida we're talking about people this isn't like vanderville this is Florida they are prominent program or I mean they're not just a slouch program I mean everything Road game we were reeling off all these Road stadiums of Swamp man that's a tough place to win a game I'm like it's just how how far Florida has fallen I mean yes they did make it to the SEC Championship and they had a really good year in 2020 but since then they were had a couple good years under Jim mne and then Urban Meyer in the Tim TBO days but but prior to that was Steve Spurrier and that was in the 90s so it's just hard to see it especially growing up and watching players like TBO and you know do all that with their teams and Percy Harvin and just um Aaron Hernandez and all of those players too I know that just just crazy and then to see that kind of see the program for Florida be where it is today it's it's I just I never thought I'd see that that's just my point I don't think they ever I I Know Dan Mullen was a little bit of a dis appointment but I was kind of shocked they got rid of him I agree yeah me too stability there I mean he I mean he's a prick but I couldn't believe they fired him what was his stat that he hated to recruit guess was one of the statements he made I think that's he didn't like to recruit like there was issues there but I think they should have gave him one more year just to see I don't think I like Billy Napier but I don't think he was the guy to take over that program at that time I think he reminds me just like a will mus champ where you're like how wait they hired who placeholder did great things at Louisiana like he he if he was at another job after that like another stepping stone I think he wouldn't have been a questionable higher but I just think I don't know it's maybe a little premature for him going from Louisiana Lafayette to Florida is a jum big jump yeah well and it's shown in the results or lack thereof that's right so all right well that's uh that's our breakdown of the defensive back roster and a little bit of the some opinions on the season and outlook for some of the other teams this season we'll continue to do that over the next several weeks leading up to the kickoff um which is after tonight five Thursdays and then kickoff so um we'll be doing I think linebackers and defensive line next week and break those down and uh some good some good stuff there too some good players there and of course we'll we'll talk some recruiting and any other update stuff that comes over the next week as we get to where some actions coming now where we're going to start the pads and cleats are coming out going to start hearing some pads hitting some helmets hitting some whistles is blowing you know it's um it's fall is football time so I can't wait it's here baby it is here and I can't wait I I can't wait I mean two Steeler quarterbacks today completed deep balls in practice I mean that's just the future's bright half seen that in three years we love this preseason stuff guys we love it we love it h kidding seen the Steeler quarterback hit a deep ball in three years but hey I know it's only practice skeleton drills but the simple fact that he loaded up and chucked it and hit a receiver and stride 50 yards down the field it's just was it Russell Wilson something both he's got out today oh okay so it was Fields then Fields launching the 50- yard bomb okay because Russ has a undisclosed calf issue right now Jesus um so Fields took the first team reps today and then Kyle Allen and Allen that's Kyle Allen you're correct oh my God I haven't heard that name in year I had no idea he was in the league are you serious yeah he's number three QB he's very serviceable I mean I know better the threes we've had like I said our entire quarterback room in Pittsburgh is three times better than it has been y I mean John Reese plumbley from Miss way back and he's he's a practice squad guy but I like I like he can run so he can Sim in practice he can Sim some of these running quarterbacks uh obviously he can't run as fast as Lamar Jackson but he can he can Sim in practice you know some of these some of these running quarterbacks so anyway that's a whole another Lane we can dive into but anyway so uh yeah so we're going to wrap the show up this week it's good to be back good to see everyone hopefully murf's okay wherever he may be still sleeping off the Panthers win that's okay that's understandable I would be too if the Flyers could ever win a playoff series or even get in one for crying out loud and we're back so yeah so anyway I probably sleeping it off too um but anyway next week defensive line linebackers be here and then well next week we're also going to uh pop in hopefully one the way off sides guys towards the end just to get some updates from them about the new sports network and that kind of stuff so um couple under the weather tonight so that that got postponed for tonight so uh anyway but uh good to see you guys man Roll Tide let's get some
