now with Tay Diggs we've loved him on TV and movies and on Broadway now he's getting animated taking us under the sea in Disney Jr's Ariel with a new take on the characters we know and love from The Little Mermaid welcome Mr so you were saying that your your son is 14 so he's kind of already Beyond this phase what made you want to take on this role oh it was uh there was no question it's it's obviously a classic and uh you know uh Walker's mother has some experience with Dina Menzel with uh with Disney so I wanted to follow suit uh and it's uh somewhat historical um I feel really honored to be you know uh one of the first African-American uh uh uh actress to play this character so I'm very excited about it and you certainly have the voice for it how did you find well I just love listening how did you find the voice of Triton uh it's um trial and error you know what I mean um they they luckily they they picked me and and uh I kind of imagined in my in my head with what this character would sound like a combination of me and and other kings that that have existed and luckily they were uh they were uh they were pleased if you care to share any vocal exercises we're here for it let's let's hear it firstand take a look everybody as king of Atlantica I officially declare that today will be happy Krabby day which means all crabs must take the day off just love these characters I mean you were saying Walker Walker is a teenager what does he think of his dad as a merman he when I actually told him that I got the gig he was like oh nice nice uhhuh right I know feel your pain when you first saw Triton on screen I'm embarrassed to say you know I'm in my 50s but I got goosebumps it's really uh no matter how long you do this it's always great to see like a finished product and this is so different from doing a live action because you can't I have no idea what these uh what these drawings are going to look like and uh it was it was cool I mean it's it's a it's a trip how far we've come where now you know these Disney Disney characters that I have tattoos and they gave me big arms it's cool I mean he goes to the zoom a bit this cat so uh you know I'm it's it's an honor and uh and I'm surprised at how kind of giddy I am do you see any signs that Walker will uh follow into the singing or performing footsteps absolutely not really you say with a smile he's a little Hooper he's a he's a jock he's a hilariously funny terribly goodlooking um uh you know he's he's he's a teenager through and through but he doesn't want to follow an our foot footall foot foot tracks uh Footprints footsteps footstep yeah footsteps he doesn't want to walk behind us we're just blocks away from where you did rent on Broadway what kind of memories does that trigger for you being on Broadway man it was so long ago uh it it feels like a different lifetime but but Walker is living proof that that it happened cuz that's where I met his mom and uh it was a great time it was a great time we're all just starting out and all of us are doing so well so uh yeah it's it's uh it's always I just get chills listening to that song yeah yeah I don't I'm kidding I'm kidding I do you speaking of a different time uh I'm going to take you even farther back 1990s Tokyo Disneyland is that shirt from back then no it wasn't I did a I did a stint like a 10mon uh a 10-month run of uh a show called Sebastian's Caribbean Carnival in Tokyo Disneyland and uh and the the theme was like Little Mermaid and it was me and Sebastian and a whole bunch of beautiful Japanese people and it was a it was a show that that made me a good amount of money and was was a lot of fun to do so it's like full circle it is and what would that guy think about all of this here he'd be hyped I was hyped back then I was young and dumb and I had a lot of energy and a really big smile still got all that tay digs we thank you so much for coming by really appreciate it Disney Jor is our Oriel premieres on Disney Jr tomorrow and will be available to stream the following day on Disney Plus
