Introduction Heavy rain continues to fall across
south east Australia. This is producing widespread moderate
to major flooding across multiple states. Rainfall totals Observed rainfall totals in the 24 hours
9 a.m. Thursday show widespread moderate
to heavy falls across the region. But the highest falls have been through northern Victoria
with falls in excess of 120 millimetres. And northern Tasmania with falls
in excess of 180 millimetres. And there is more heavy rain on the way. So a number of severe weather
warnings are still current. Severe weather warnings For southern New South Wales and Victoria, that's for heavy rainfall
leading to flash flooding as well as damaging winds
for elevated areas. And for Tasmania, heavy to intense rainfall which could lead
to life threatening flash flooding, along with damaging winds
and damaging surf conditions for the eastern parts of the state. Rivers have responded very quickly
and a number of flood Flood warnings warnings are current,
particularly across Victoria and Tasmania. Many of these are new and flood
watches continue to be active as rivers start to rise even further
with this rainfall coming through. If we have a closer
look at Victoria and Tasmania. We see that multiple minor to major flood
warnings have been issued. Current conditions In Victoria, these include for the Campaspe, Goulburn and King Rivers
and around the Melbourne area, warnings are current for the Werribee
and Maribyrnong Rivers. And in northern Tasmania, warnings are current for multiple catchments
including the Mersey, the Meander and the North Esk and South Esk rivers. And because this is a dynamic situation, what you see here will change frequently. So it is important that you
have the latest information. For the rest of Thursday, we can expect heavy rainfall through the south east,
particularly through the warning area. Rainfall does ease to showers
for western New South Wales and western Victoria late in the evening, with the rainfall
pushing into eastern parts of Victoria and further through eastern New South
Wales. Rain gradually starts to ease across Tasmania
into Friday morning and we see the showers pushed up into eastern New South Wales and into the coast. But rainfall totals won't be as high. The cold front gets a move on
during Friday and by late Friday and Saturday,
we'll see a return to clear skies but flooding impacts are likely to last
well into next week. Outro So with plenty of heavy rainfall
on the way for New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania,
and the expectation of widespread flooding, it is important
to have the latest information from the Bureau's website
or the Bureau’s weather app. As always, follow
all advice from local emergency services, and please stay safe.
