Right now. Thanks for joining us. I'm Gia Vang and I'm Terry McSweeney. Some very promising news for 49ers rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall. He was released from the hospital today after being shot during an attempted robbery yesterday. It happened near San Francisco's Union Square. Today, his mother says a 23 year old was shot in the chest and the bullet just missed his vital organs, adding he's in good spirits as he recovers. But this high profile shooting is bringing a lot of attention to the city's ongoing crime problems. It certainly is. NBC Bay Area's Christie Smith joins us live with how Mayor London Breed and other city leaders are responding to it all. Christie Well, Terry, the scene is clear right now. People are out and about here in San Francisco. But this is where the attempted robbery on 49ers player Ricky Pearsall occurred. Now, San Francisco police have had a very visible presence for quite some time in and around Union Square. But the city saying they're upping that and today we caught up with city leaders about the impact of what happened. It was it was unnerving, especially because, you know, you hear of riff raff and kind of things going on. But the fact that it was in broad daylight and kind of so close to Union Square. A day after an attempted robbery and shooting left 49ers rookie Ricky Pearsall injured, Alexandra Alessio walked by the scene today. She's visiting the city for the weekend and walked by yesterday shortly after the shooting. We were making our way up to Union Square when we saw a tall gentleman kind of come out and I thought he had been hurt, maybe in his arm, but it sounds like he was clutching his chest. And people around us said that someone was shot, and at that time we didn't know it was a 49ers player. The victim, Niners rookie wide receiver Pearsall, was shot when police say a 17 year ■old with a gun tried to rb Pearsall. There was a struggle and during that struggle, the gun went off. It hit Pearsall and the suspect, who was quickly arrested. Both were hospitalized. This is a tragedy of epic proportions and my thoughts and prayers are with Ricky and his family. The shooting happened just a block from Union Square, and Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin's district. We have to realize that gun violence is a national epidemic and it happens in every corner. We read about it every day. Multiple shootings. San Francisco has been very, very safe. This is an aberration. In a statement today, the team said Pearsall was released from the hospital. This afternoon, adding that the team and Pearsall family are thankful to SFPD and the first responders at SF general. I know everybody has been praying for his speedy recovery and we are wishing him and his family well and we appreciate the thoughts and prayers that have come in. Mayor London Breed says since 2021, the city has had an increased police presence in the Union Square area. Pointing to that for the quick response and arrest. Which is why when this event occurred, the police responded within a minute they were within the area. So we typically, especially on weekends, we have an increased police presence. But in light of the events yesterday, we've increased it even more so to address some of the concerns that people might have. Now, the police chief did mention yesterday that they're moving up their planned increased holiday police presence in the area. We did reach out to try to get more specifics about that, but haven't
