Big Bear Zoo animals find refuge in the desert as smoke from the Line Fire threatens air quality

dozens of zoo animals from the Big Bear Alpine Zoo are finding temporary Comfort now out of Harm's Way at the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens here in the Coachella Valley News Channel 3 is Jennifer Franco continues team coverage with more on the threat the line fires bringing to some of those Mountain communities and their attractions that's hoodie settling into new surroundings is getting easier that goes for Jessica whiten and the Animals she cares for it's been a long couple days um uh but it's it's been amazing I mean as far as having to move half a zoo in uh a matter of 24 hours it went really smoothly Whit's team is grateful for the help they're getting the guys from The Living Desert have been absolutely incredible after a call early Wednesday animals started arriving in the desert Thursday morning they arrived in um three climate controll Vans um and vehicles um in collaboration with uh local animal control crate after crate working together to bring Comfort to each creature The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens has taken in roughly 50 animals from the zoo up in Big Bear that's about half of the animal population there and that includes small mammals and birds like Dobby this rehabilitated barn owl behind me he bu Big Bear remains under an evacuation warning but the zoo there is taking proactive steps to keep their most vulnerable animals safe birds have a very high respiration rate so they can be affective Ed by air quality more so than some of the mammals or the big bigger animals whiten says the bigger mammals staying behind have indoor facilities with HVAC systems so air quality is controllable the ones here in the desert have support and they're caretakers they were able to bring a lot of the animal diet down um a lot of familiar um equipment that the animals need there's still room for more animals if needed and help is on hand for as long as the Big Bear team needs fingers crossed um it'll only be a week or so and we'll be able to go home in Palm Desert Jennifer Franco News Channel 3
