in a completely relaxed unscripted format and I get my thoughts on everything taking place around the National Football League today and now on with our Feature Presentation September 6 2024 it's week one of a brand new NFL season and we find ourselves down at Brazil for the first ever match played not just in Brazil but in South America as the Green Packers are taking on the Philadelphia Eagles in a battle between two quarterbacks from the 2020 NFL draft class and in a battle between two playoff teams who had did last season in a completely different directions for the Packers getting a win here against the conference opponent wouldn't be nice not just because the NFC North looks as though it's going to be a blood bath and every win is going to count but because with how tough green Bas schedule is to start the season off or should I say not tough at all on paper you probably need to start 4- two in order to win the NFC North it's a very backloaded schedule win this game and you're picking up right where you left off from last year's divisional round season and you put yourselves in a pretty good spot going forward and speaking of putting yourselves in a good spot if you love the weird and wacky history of the NFL and you want to see me break down weird Decisions by coaches then this is the perfect spot for you because we talk every single day about the history of the NFL how this gamee went well it was a weird one we had a feeli where practically everyone was slipping and sliding a over the place despite the fact that it was a perfectly clear night with no inclement weather we saw some really bad plays at times it felt very much like Super Bowl 38 where you had LS where both offenses struggled and couldn't get anything going and then you had these offensive explosions where each team scored at will on D plays you can make the argument that this was the greatest and craziest International game in NFL history and I honestly wouldn't fight you too much on that because this gamee truly had everything however by this point of the contest the Eagles L it 3129 with the Packers having one time out and with the Eagles having the ball at the 17 yd line looking to deliver the dagger if you're Green Bay obviously you need to get a stop and ideally you can stop the Eagles here and then stop them on third down so that you can get the ball back right after the 2-minute warning with just under 2 minutes left to drive the length of the field and get a touchdown after the inevitable field goal unfortunately that does not happen as on second and eight Jaylen Herz hit Devante Smith for a gain of 11 and a first down at the 6 Y Line all right this stinks but now you've got to stop the clock and call timeout and give yourself as much time as possible to get the ball back however little time you may have to do so and to give your what why is the clock running why are you not calling time out why is the clock running why is the clock running poor over is poor over is the Eagles churning the clock down looking to finish this one off in Brazil welcome to dumb decisions before I break down what happened here this whole series is about taking an indepth look at decisions made during games that were clearly awful from the start this isn't something to look bad in hindsight rather this is something to look awful almost immediately these are moves where God instin tells you right away that that there is no way this can possibly work and sure enough your gut ins synct was smarter than that of an NFL head coach and for this one we're taking a look at the mind of green B Packers set coach Matt laflor laflor has guided the Packers to a lot of wins as a team set coach since taking over from Mike McCarthy he also seems to have inherited a part of McCarthy's in-game management skills or lack thereof because laflor has made his fair sh of bhead of mistakes including most notably the decision to kick the the field goal deep in the Red Zone down by eight points with 2 minutes left against the T Buccaneers in the 2020 NFC championship for some reason which worked out about as well as you'd expect you could learn more about that by clicking the card in the upper right corner you have a game against the Atlanta Falcons last year where he bypassed a relatively makeable field goal to take a delay of game penalty and then punt the ball away because that made no sense whatsoever you learn more about Bazar Moment by clicking the card in the upper right corner and we had another one of his ingame management brain farts here because last time I checked the clocks in Brazil are the same as the clocks in the United States so there was no excuse whatsoever for laflor to mismanage the clock this badly laflor coached an interesting game I'll put it that way at least some of the other things he did like kicking the field goal in the Red Zone in the first quarter instead of try to make it a two-score game and kicking the field goal in the fourth quarter on the previous possession you can defend it and it could have gone either way heck even the awful timeout Management in the first half where his Packers had no timeouts for the final 5 minutes of the half at least that was somewhat defendable because of when the timeouts were being called but this this is just inexcusable so with all that being said let's take a look at why not calling a timeout with 205 left in the fourth quarter when it's your last timeout remaining is a really bad idea after for this we need to break down the situation at hand obviously if the Eagles score a touchdown the game is basically over unless the Eagles get the touchdown and miss the extra point for some crazy reason it is going to be a two-possession game so you can't go into this with a mindset of what if the Eagles score a touchdown because the only chance you have at winning in the first place is by getting a stop and by forcing the Eagles to kick the field goal to make it a 5point game and it's not as though you could save the time out for when you get on offense again because if you never take that time out and it goes down to the two-minute warning the Eagles can just run three times and that ends the game so this isn't even a matter of well I'd rather have the timeout versus the extra seconds because it gives us some leeway if there's a sack or if we want to use the middle of the field no the only chance you have at winning this game is stopping the Eagles forcing them to kick the chip Shaw field goal and then driving the L through the field to get a touchdown which means it makes sense to want the maximum number of plays possible if you have an impossible task you want as many tries as you can to be able to accomplish said task if you have to write a 50-page paper you want two weeks to do it not one if you have to go into Shell City and retrieve King Neptune's Crown you want 10 days to do it not six your odds increase significantly with more opportunities and with more time at your disposal so you need to manage this one timeout that you've got in a way that maximizes the number of PLS they have available at your disposal and maximizes the amount of time that you have to drive down the field and do something and let's make it very clear either way you're in trouble either way you're going to have your work cut out for you and you're going to need some luck to go your way and a busted coverage or two in order to win this one but if the name of the game is about winning and you want to maximize your chances of winning however minuscule they may be then you need to manage this timeout that you have effectively so let's start with the first option which is to do what any smart coach would have done in this spot and what I would have done in this spot and that is to call the timeout right away at the 205 Mark after Devante Smith got his first down after this we're going to the chalkboard if you call the timeout right here you have no timeouts left but you do have the two warning available at your disposal we're going to assume each running play takes 5 Seconds off the clock just for Simplicity sake and just because that's what can usually be expected and we're also going to assume that the Eagles don't score on any of their runs because again if you allow a score the game is over baring a drive down the field and onsite kick recovery and another drive down the field first down and the Eagles run the ball and take it down to the two-minute warning second down and the Eagles call another running play that takes 5 Seconds off the clock to 155 add on the 40 seconds for the play clock afterwards and that gets us to 115 third down and the Eagles call another running play that takes 5 Seconds off the clock to 110 add on the 40 seconds for the play clock afterwards and that gets us to 30 seconds from there the Eagles kick a field goal which will take 5 more seconds off the clock and you're getting it back with 25 seconds left is this ideal situation absolutely not but that's the best case scenario Bing anything absurd like forcing a turnover or a misfield goal you have 25 seconds to drive 70 yards assuming a Touchback on the kickoff now let's go to the second option which is what Matt laflor decided to do for some crazy reason if you don't call the timeout right away at 205 then the clock will automatically run down to the 2-minute warning first down and the Eagles a run taking 5 Seconds off the clock you call your timeout right then and there with 155 second down and the Eagles call a run taking 5 Seconds off the clock to 150 plus the 40c run off from the play clock so we go to 110 third down and the Eagles call a run taking 5 Seconds off the clock to 105 plus the 4 second run off from the pl clock getting us to 25 seconds from there the Eagles kick a field goal which will take 5 more seconds off the clock and you're getting it back with 20 seconds left so let's break this down if you knew when to call a timeout and you were smart about it you'd have 25 seconds to work with if you didn't know went to go the timeout and let it run down to the two-minute warning like an idiot then you'd have 20 seconds to work with which gives you the better chance which gives you the better opportunity to drive down the field and drive all the way and get the touchdown that you need it's the bigger number it's the bigger freaking number I know five seconds might not seem like a lot and might not seem like a huge difference but that's the difference between you need to go 70 yards and roughly four plays and 70 yards in roughly five plays that's the difference between needing to average 17.5 yards per play and need to average 14 yards per play and that is a fairly big difference heck at 25 seconds you can go over the middle of the field if it's deep enough to get into hell Mar range at 20 seconds anything over the middle of the field is going to end the game at 25 seconds if you take a sack on the first play you will still probably have time to spike the ball and then try some crazy pitchy pitchy woo woo play at 20 seconds left if you take a sack on the first play that's the ball game no questions asked that's a huge difference you have some margin for error at 25 with the ball you have no margin at 20 and you're going to buy P pass that extra play and those 5 seconds for what honestly for what reason would you do that you can't save the timeout for when you're onun offense you've got to call it at some point or else the game is over so you might as well call in the most opportune spot so that you have more time to work with in order to drive down the field why put yourself behind the eightball even more than you were already going to be why handicap yourself even more it just doesn't make sense we never got an explanation from Matt laflor afterwards about the poor timeout Management in the spot and why he called the game like that but I'm giving the reporters a pass here because uh yeah there were more pressing matters at hand like Jordan Love's injury the Jordan love injury of the story behind that is way more important than the extra for 5 seconds and I'm not dense enough to pretend otherwise so we'll probably never know what Le was thinking here but it doesn't change the fact that it was ridiculous you had a chance to have more time to do something tough and you didn't take advantage of it poor ingame management has been an unfortunate staple of the mat laf floor experience and it seems as though we're picking up right where we left off here what's crazy in the game between these two teams behind me right here is the fact that this played out eerily similar to what we saw last week in college football if you're a college football fan between Colorado and North Dakota State you might remember that game where North Dakota state had a chance to call a timeout before the two-minute warning knowing that they needed a touchdown and a stop to get the ball back and for some reason they didn't call the timeout and it ended up costing them in the end because they had fewer seconds to work with you can learn more about that by clicking the card in the upper corner as I talked about that on my college football channel jge you would think that these coaches would learn one of these days to call timeouts before the 2-minute warning you would think that they would get the memo but today is not that day so what are we learn from all of this two many coaches think that the two-minute warning absolves them from needing to call time out before then when that couldn't be further from the truth because we see it time and time again if you need to call time out then you need to call it right away and you cannot take a million years to do so if you want to do something impossible then you need to have as much time as possible to do it and if you're going to limit the number of chances you have to do it through poor time management and through your own fault then you deserve everything that's coming to you and if you want to score a touchdown then you need to get the ball back as quickly as possible and if you don't take advantage of that then you should really learn a thing or two about managing a claw because it's the same no matter what country in the world you're in because when all these elements are in play you can't exactly be surprised when this playback fires talk about a dumb decision get your official Jabar GE I merchandise by going to jj9 shop.com and be
