the Wolverines returned to college football's Pinnacle last January capturing the program's 12th national championship JJ takes the snap fires he's got roban Wilson who will walk into the end zone hands it off to corm outside to the 15 hesitates to the 10 like corm touchdown Wolverine quarterback run up the middle going to make it he's not going to make it well it all comes down to this tonight here in Houston hands it off to Edwards who will bounce it outside got him at 40 got him at 30 got him at Edwards is in the clear pennx fires over the middle and it is intercepted Mikey s are going the other way 202 team 144 you have just won a National [Music] Championship now first year head coach chirome Moore gets to reconstruct the team that lost 13 players to the NFL draft if we didn't have a Target on our back ever before we do now you were hunting to know you being hunting block out the noise keep pushing forward control weak can control and just play football you just can't get comfortable with anything can't get comfortable in meetings you can't get comfortable by at practice if you don't keep the same energy in place that same hungriness that same grittiness to grind and really be the best you can kind of Get Lost in Translation you know we got to come in and work we got to keep our feet where where we're at right under us and uh you know just day by day we're just trying to be ready right now so we won't have to be ready when the gamees come we'll preview the 2024 season next on inside Michigan football inside Michigan football is presented by Meers hi again friends and welcome to the first edition of inside Michigan football Doug carsh alongside the two I call you a two-time national champion once as a player once is a broadcaster John Jansen is here and John obviously last season was great but it's on to the next season and you had to do this 97 you won the ring you came back in 98 and it wasn't easy you were now clearly the hunted you are and it's going to be the news story you know whether it's Fresno State it's Texas it's Arkansas state every time that Michigan is tied at the end of the first quarter at the halftime it's always going to be at the bottom ticker because people always want to know it was with Georgia we did it when we're watching Georgia they won back-to-back titles and it was when are they going to lose and then they finally did it was big news so these kids know that they're going to try and play it off like it's not a big deal but it is a big deal we came out hopefully their start of their season is a little better than ours we started off 0 and2 and the amount of pressure at that point was was real high we were able to salvage it to for a share of the Big 10 title but these kids have even though there's a lot that is not coming back a lot of the players that are stepping up are veteran players they're juniors they're seniors so they are ready to go well there's a lot of uncertainty regarding the Michigan offense and joining us from the practice field is our Ed kerski Ed Doug that's a great word with so much attrition that's exactly what needs to take place development and there are plenty of pieces in place to be optimistic about the future the Wolverines open fall camp with tremendous Focus knowing there was much work to be done before the opener against Fresno State we got to come in and work we got to keep our feet where where we're at right under us and uh you know just day by day um can't get ahead of ourselves can't look for another championship you know what I'm saying we got to fall in love with the process I think we've been doing a really good job of doing that so far quarterback that's the query garnering the most speculation Jack Tuttle Alex orgy and Davis Warren are the prime candidates to be under Center August 31st I see just hunger determination from all the guys um all the guys that that are compet for the job like they they want it you know and that's a good thing and all the guys are also really good leaders so like they are are working in every every facet to uh become a quarterback in the back field Donovan Edwards provides the zest 233 lb Bruiser Cal mullings hopes to bring up thunder and lightning Dynamic that's how I see it uh you know Don obviously we all know what Dono brings uh and you know I feel like I can definitely bring that uh that Thunder that boom that size uh and that strength with it as well on the old line five starters and the top six overall have moved on but progress from Spring ball has been tangible I'm new we got a lot of guys who are trying to figure out how to play together and I think just as a unit we've been um jelling so much better together our communication's been on point um and really we're just um playing Five is one we are the leaders of the team we have to lead the team the whole line goes the whole team goes so every play if they show up so everybody else is comfortable the pass catchers start with allamerican Colston lovelin whatever role I need to be in be in that role and dominate it and uh you know be the best leader and version of myself I can be to help this team withn the junior will be complimented by a young but talented group of white outs I like that we all young and hungry and we all want to prove ourselves like everybody come in everybody works hard and you know we all do the extra things such as you know watch film you know go over drum do extra walkthroughs I feel like we all hungry and we all want to get better each and every single day you heard it right there from Morgan every single day that's the commitment and the consistency needed for Success the encouraging news The Wolverine certainly have the blueprint of what it takes Doug all right Ed thank you and John let's talk about the Michigan offense just like in 1998 you guys had to break in a new quarterback this team has to break in a new quarterback we don't know who it's going to be just yet but there are some candidates all showing some some positive traits they are and whether it's leadership um and it's really come down to a two-man race right now between Davis Warren and Alex ory and both of them have great leadership traits both of them have a little bit of a different skill set at the quarterback position obviously we all know Alex ory what we saw him on the ground last year but what people don't know is he's got a really strong arm and the thing about Davis Warren is his determination from from what he has come back from to get to this point right now is is almost unheard of and so it's it's really exciting to watch these two guys battle it out for the starting quarterback position and I'll tell you this no matter who Chiron Moore picks it's going to be a great selection for this team okay your favorite topic offensive line there are guys that have started games and played but the starters from the bowl game and the college football playoff they're all gone and so uh there have been some good reports cuz they're playing against the best D line in the country and I've heard they've pushed them around at times they have definitely held their own and it's been really to watch because obviously early on Mason Graham Kenneth Grant those guys are their studs and it's been a progress a work in progress for this Michigan offensive line and whether it's Greg krippin uh Raheem Anderson uh Dom gise um has really played well at that at that Center position and then you start thinking about you've got your two guards and you've got a left tackle in Miles Hinton now it's really just trying to hone in on who's going to be the starting center and who's going to fill the shoes at right tackle now let's move Mo on to the guys on the outside wide receivers two great players have moved on Tyler Morris made a huge play in the Rose Bowl and people say yeah he did that in practice all season long he finally got a chance in the game there's Sage Morgan coming back he was explosive a year ago Fred Moore a young up incoming player yeah and Kendrick Bell a guy that brings a little bit more height to that position Maran Walker is back in an arbor so there are plenty of options and whether you want speed like Tyler Morris who's got the red button on the controller or you want a little bit more size guys that really understand uh that what do you got to do to get a first down what is the distance that you need we have guys that can do that we have guys that can go deep all right there are known Commodities on offense running backs Donovan Edwards kle mullings tight end coulston levelin and others behind him that position looks like it's loaded it is it's I mean when you talk about from top to bottom you've got guys like Marlon Klein who we've heard is maybe one of the fastest guys on the team um and don't forget about bredeson I mean he is a guy that he is the doit all piece on this offense but in terms of the running backs Donovan Edwards we've seen him as big play Donovan now he's going to have to carry a much you know heavier load in regards to being the every down back khil Mullins is a nice change up we've SE we've seen him throw the ball we've seen him do a lot of different things and it's a nice one-two punch in the back field all right we have plenty more to come here on inside Michigan football later John talks with head coach Chiron Moore and we'll show you the new $14 million locker room in Shen Beckler Hall but next we'll talk Michigan defense inside Michigan football is brought to you by Meyer presenting sponsor the 2024 Michigan football season a proud sponsor of thousands of local sports teams across the Midwest inside Michigan football is brought to you by University of Michigan Health there's a difference between an answer and a Michigan answer visit Michigan anwers.com prettyy much same defense as last year we stand on all the four pillars effort and angles block distu communication and ball struction whatever we did last year we have to um tighten up our details even more you know we got to pra te harder you know all these different things that we can find a way to improve on um and make even better is what we're going to have to do to make sure we win a another National Championship there's no doubt where the bar is set and there's no doubt where I'll set the bar and that's for us to be the best in the country and I'm not going to hide from that I'm not going to run from that and neither are we as a defense all right let's talk Michigan defense here on inside Michigan football and at every level that our Playmakers will start up front in the middle Grant and Graham a formidable Duo yeah I don't know that you're going to find a better Duo inside in college football than those guys and when you see all the Publications that's pretty much confirming that those two guys are the best and then when you think about everything that surrounds them Josiah Stewart I mean the line that was the defensive line on the fourth down against Alabama is the is the defensive line that is back Derrick Moore is going going to be on the field and I think derck Moore is going to have a breakout season all right linebacker J sha baram comes in from Maryland and he looks he he's built like an NFL guy Ernest Housman is back uh there's some Talent there yeah and I ask um Chiron how excited were you for two reasons one not to have to play against Jaan Barham when he entered the portal but then when he did enter the portal how were excited were you when he expressed interest to come to Michigan and his his response was great you know I don't want a game plan against him anymore now I have to see him every day so it's kind of a a hit and miss but on Saturdays he is going to be a playmaker and I think he's going to be a guy that is up for a lot of awards at the end of the season all right the secondary will Johnson is on the Marquee as the best player back there maybe the best at his position in the country yeah and obviously the question is not what will Johnson's going to do we know what you have there you've got a shut down Corner a guy that can be on an island but is it going to be Jer Hill is it going to be air hall there's a lot of good options opposite him as well and that's the thing about this secondary is you've got with Welker you've got some great depth at the defensive back position and S you got mcari pagee back at safety he finished the season strong so a lot of Talent on the Michigan defense and they could carry the load early as the offense gets up and going we hear from the head coach Chiron M next here on inside Michigan football our conversation with the coach is brought to you by May coach you are a week away from the very first game when you are sitting in your office no one's around what are your thoughts as you approach your first season as full-time head coach of this program uh enjoy it enjoy every moment enjoy the time with the players with the staff um just anytime I get in the building I'm just feel like I'm blessed to be here I still pinch myself uh realizing how close it is and I'm super excited about it there's a lot of competitions going on obviously one of them is a quarterback how's that competition what have you seen from all the parties involved I mean it's been Fierce uh it's been competitive but not combative they' they've really taken care of each other and really pushed each other and and guys have made plays in different ways throughout camp and you know we're we're at the week Mark and about to kick it off here soon so we'll have a we'll have a good decision on who we think it'll be uh who will take that first naap on Saturday position that you and I have a special place in our our heart for the offensive line and it's been dominant two years Joe Moore awardwinning offensive line as you were the head coach last year wasn't the same recognition but the same production now you've got six guys that were on that offensive line that are playing on Sundays how do you replace and how do you put together an offensive line that can have the same production yeah I feel good about those guys it's been a competitive camp and when you got to go against Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant decides to do it and Derek Moore every single day either ship up or you ship out and those guys have really shipped up those guys have really taking the Reign on the group and super stoked to see what they're going to do this week as they prepare uh mentally for for the game ahead and you know I think from a standpoint of physicality they've they've calloused up a lot in this camp now you already mentioned some of the headliners on defense Derek Moore Mason Graham Kenneth Grant will will Johnson we know all of those guys and we know the linebackers and how have you guys one been able to add talent to this team through the trans for portal Jan bar Barham is one of those guys how have what have they brought those guys that are new to the roster what have they brought to this defense I mean start with Jan he's just he's a tone Setter in everything he does the way he operates how he walks around the building and he doesn't say much but when he plays you feel him and you hear it um he's been outstanding he's going to be incredible um Amir Hall's another guy that's coming that's added depth to that corner room it's done a really good job West Walker from Tennessee another guy that's really done really good job Ricky Johnson at UNLV uh Jaden Mangum the DB room uh those guys have really added some much needed value depth to that backend position and added the competition because it pushed the guys that were here not only the Jer Heroes of the world but it made will better and and continue to push him so um super stoked for for that you know that group and see what they look like and last year one of the biggest assets of the defense was you rotating nine 10 guys up front everybody was averaging 35 or less snaps now for the highend guys you're kind of looking at that going well could we get them on the field more but fresh is always obviously the key you want to keep them fresh you want to keep them healthy how have you guys been able to build that depth throughout training camp you know with the numbers we have and the talent we have on offense and defense it's awesome that you can separate and have two sides of practice to have different guys going but it's allowed guys like Ike uh Trey Pierce enoa cam Brandt to really step up on the backup of the defensive line L and and watch them progress uh guy like TJ guy is taking his strides from Spring to now and he's really you know he just jumped in that same group with Josiah and Derek consider him a starter like those guys and having rayan Benny back has been huge for us too because he's it's like he's never left so those guys have all had a really really good camp and physical and gotten better and probibly to the point now where we feel comfortable playing them in the game coach thanks a lot and best of luck and have fun this entire week thank you appreciate it all right back here on inside Michigan football and let's talk special teams they get a transfer kicker Dominic zavada who looks like he's got a booming leg and Tommy doen is back at punter yeah and I mean the special teams from Michigan has been a weapon it's not just been that extra phase that everybody talks about in the three phases of football they've been able to pin teams inside the five they've been able to use their their kicker to you know hey obviously you've got to be able to score points whether it's from a 45 yard kick or all the way in you've got to have that consistent leg and it appears from what we've seen during training camp that they have that consistency there and with their punter and then the return game breaking a new guys It's always important secure the football first and foremost yes it is and I think shage Morgan learned a very tough lesson but a lot of those lessons are very valuable and that's why you're looking at juniors seniors to be your leaders because they've been through those moments in the biggest games SAR Morgan we saw in the Big 10 championship game he goes 93 yards we keep expecting that and young players is going to do young things at times but he's not a young player anymore so we expect more 93 yarders all right we go inside the new beautiful Michigan locker room here at the AL Glick Fieldhouse next here on inside Michigan football oh my God inside Michigan football is brought to you by University of Michigan Health there's a difference between an answer and a Michigan answer visit Michigan answers.com after 6 months of construction and anti ipation the Wolverine's new Robert J Brown and Robert M Brown senior $14 million locker room was in bailed in AUST oh my God we're blessed we're humbly blessed uh really like to thank the Brown family for the huge donation and the support and everybody in Michigan football dation that supports our players but this is incredible it's everything our players need and they deserve we're going to be comfortable and we're going to be cozy and we're going to be able to uh regenerate energy for the next you know meetings or the next day in practice allamerican will Johnson highlights some of the cool features got the pool table Barber Shop golf simulator movie theater bowling alley lockers I mean everything everything's fire in here the functional side is also something to behold spacious practical and comfy for men this size our doners our fans are invested in our student athletes and and their success uh and this is a great indicator of the support that we have for our student athletes and for our programs uh and it's just phenomenal to see uh how it all pulls together my favorite spot I love golf but golf's too frustrating bowling a little on the noisy side so if I want to chill out I'm just going to shoot some stick with my buddies and relax what you don't know is that was like take seven for that ball to go in but in that new locker room I got to tell you I think my favorite thing is a barber shop barber of course it is barber shop right next to the salad bar one of those I will use the other one I will not but come on you need a clean shave once a while in a while don't have to pay for it the golf simulator is a thing that's something that I can use I know the golf simulator the bowling alley like I mean you walk in and you instantly see it and you're like wow it it it really is breathtaking and just the comfort in the locker would have loved to have had a pillow versus my PS all right we'll be back next week to recap the Fresno game to open up the Michigan season here on inside Michigan football so inside Michigan football is brought to you by Meyer presenting sponsor of the 2024 Michigan football season and impr sponsor of thousands of local sports teams across the
