a heartbreaking loss for a family a New Jersey community and the Sports World Johnny goodro an NHL Allstar was killed along with his younger brother Matthew late Thursday night the two men were biking when they were struck by a car in Southern New Jersey Michael George joins us now with more and Michael this story is just awful awful to hear about and what makes this tragedy even more heartbreaking Jeff Johnny and Matthew gdo were set to be groomsmen in their sister's wedding the very next day now police have arrested a suspected drunk driver outside the Scotia Bank Saddle Dome in Calgary fans are leaving flowers after learning of the death of NHL star Johnny gdo and his brother Matthew just absolutely devastating for everyone uh involved the the family obviously going through what they went through New Jersey State Police say the two brothers were biking on this road in oldsman Township New Jersey around 8:00 p.m. Thursday night when an SUV trying to pass two other vehicles crashed into them officers say the driver 43-year-old sha Higgins admitted he had five or six beers before getting behind the wheel I we were just hoping that none of it was true and unfortunately when we heard the news this morning it just made me sick to my stomach to hear about it the tragedy took place on the eve of their sister's wedding the gdo family said in a statement quote we lost two husbands two fathers two sons two brothers but truly two amazing humans 31-year-old Johnny earned the nickname Johnny hockey during 10 seasons in the NHL becoming one of the League's top players first with the Calgary Flames and currently with the Columbus Blue Jackets 29-year-old Matthew played alongside him at Boston College their former coach spoke about the loss their feeling they were all back to celebrate and now you lose two sons so it's it's almost unimaginable and uh you know we know life is difficult and this certainly one of those times fan tributes are growing in Calgary Columbus and Su New Jersey where the brothers played hockey together growing up he was like our number one player we like loved him so much but their impact outside the rink is being felt too both were married and Johnny was a father to two children under the age of two I mean shows life short and yeah it's big loss to the community the hockey world so tough day now the blue jacket said in a statement Johnny brought a genuine love for hockey with him everywhere he played now as for the driver he's now facing charges of death by Auto reckless driving and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle and guys we've been hearing so much about how close the goodro family is their father was a hockey coach trained them Matthew followed in his footsteps just heartbreaking for this entire family I I mean there were I I know that CBS has not confirmed this but a lot of reports also that Matthew's wife was pregnant it it every level of this seems like it got worse and worse with each with each thing I don't I don't know how this family deals with such tragedy like the Damage Done by an alleged drunk driver but it's just terrible to hear about and I Johnny my son had his had his jersey he Johnny GD wasn't a big guy so I think he was an inspiration to a lot of kids um just his life and his athleticism and everything about it so Michael thank you thank you Michael
