the scare on the tarmac at one of the nation's busiest airports two planes colliding knocking a TA off of one jet Sor National correspondent Steve osami joins us from Atlanta with the latest good morning Steve good morning to you Michael investigators are trying to figure out whether or not this was caused by for example a pilot error or by something as simple as the way the traffic lines are drawn on the taxiways federal authorities are investigating this morning after an alarming incident on the taxi way of the world's busiest airport seen here on Airport runway security camera video we just hit something on the taxi wave uh could you tell us what what it was a large Delta plane coming towards the camera with more than 200 people was heading to the runway about to fly to Japan when the tip of its wing seen here crashes into the back of a smaller Regional Jet with more than 50 people on their way to Louisiana we were settling in getting ready for a long 15-hour fight and all there was a bump and it was a it was a hard bump journalists from our local stations in Cincinnati and Tampa were on the smaller plane this video from WCPO in Cincinnati shows part of the tail sitting on the taxi way people on the smaller planes say no one was hurt but it was still frightening it felt and sounded like a car crash there was you know kind of that crunch there was there was that that push that you get often times when these kinds of on the ground collisions occur weather's involved it's rain it's nighttime and so it's lower visibility this was a bright sunny day the numbers show that there was a significant increase in close calls at American airports in 2023 those numbers went down slightly in 2024 experts say the reasons for all of this are complicated but that one of them is a shortage of air traffic controllers passengers on both of these flights were put on other planes guys they're all safe though all right Steve thanks so much
