[Music] rolling garos was a dream that I always had because it was the only major that consistently was on clay and that was the surface I was brought up on and that was the surface that I had the most success in my career on in the spring of 1974 I was at the ripe old age of 19 I was a typical teenager in a lot of ways and I was not a typical teenager in a lot of ways emotionally I was a typical teenager in the sense of I really want to belong I did not want to be an outsider but where I wasn't typical was I think my mentality I was like very very intense and very focused I was chasing Grand Slam [Music] titles the French Open in 1974 I went into that term of thinking this is my my time I can beat these girls I've beaten all of these girls in this tournament on Clay this is my Surface I was ready to win my first grand slam the clay was so slow and we were using wood rackets nobody could hit me off the court I was just willing to stay out there as long as I could and you know wear them down and so that's what I did the night before the final I was very confident because I was playing my friend Olga Marosa we played doubles together I was maybe overconfident and thinking if I just play my game I'm going to win the match because she can't do anything to hurt me it was just a quiet confidence that I knew that I was going to win that match because I just was a better playcore player than ogga [Music] [Applause] when you win and you go up to the net and you you know ogga hugged me and you get the trophy from fet chatri and the crowds clapping and yeah I was young I was 19 it was my first major it was one of the happiest moments in my life for sure a win at Roland garos or any major Grand Slam Tournament puts you on the map you're in the history books now nobody can take it away from you the most special wins in my grand slam history were the first one which was Roland garos and also the last one and that was at Rolland GS also it's just ironic it's my first big win and my last big win
